Note from the author

This is the continuing story of Robert and Johnny, who first appeared in my short series: My 11th Summer. Although intended to be a simple stand alone short series, My 11th Summer was so popular, not only with my readers, but myself, that I decided to continue the saga in Tween to Teen. And now, as the boys finish High School and move on to College and their adult life, the final part of the saga begins. So, for those who have been following the story from the beginning, here is part 3 of the trilogy, which I am calling: Robert and Johnny-The rest of the story. Enjoy.

Chapter 37

Birthday Boy

Zeke's birthday was in March, as was mine, and though I didn't want my own special day to overshadow his, I agreed that it just made sense to celebrate both at once. Mine was the 29th, his the 15th, so we picked a Saturday in between and the weather couldn't have been more perfect.

Johnny's folks had reserved the picnic shelter at the park, the one right across from their house, and our folks had everything arranged by the time we pulled up around noon.

I thought Zeke would cry when he saw the balloons and the big banner that said 'Happy Birthday Zeke'. I had a banner too, but our folks had strategically placed them at opposite ends of the shelter so as not to diminish either of us.

Zeke hugged mom and dad, and after hesitating only a moment, he gave Johnny's folks a hug as well. Of course Mikey had to have a hug too, and that led to more hugs as we all shared our love that day.

We'd brought Peter and Bill with us, but his mom begged off, saying she was looking forward to some alone time while the boys were gone. I don't think that was really the reason, but we didn't insist as the Bug Bus was already going to be full enough with the five of us.

Caleb, Tony, and Granny showed up around 12:30, with various containers of food, and there were more hugs all around, then Johnny and I took Caleb and Tony aside to get caught up on our lives. We'd invited Gerald and his clan, but they had other plans that weekend, though they did send Zeke a nice card and 20 dollars for his birthday. I will never forget the look on his face when he opened that card, and he immediately held the money out to me.

"What?"

"You should take it for all the stuff you do for me," he said seriously.

"Zeke, son...taking care of you isn't a burden on us. It's what family does. That money is a gift from one of my best friends in the world, given with love, and it's for you to do with whatever you want. So stuff that in your pocket and buy yourself something special, or save it for a rainy day. Either way, it's yours."

"Well, if you're sure," he said looking thoughtful, and later I found out he had used part of it to buy me a birthday gift.

"How's business?" I asked Caleb, changing the subject before Zeke could think of another objection.

"Great, things are really going good. People seem to have more money these days and are buying TV's like crazy. I added a new line this month and I've already sold four of them. We get a lot of business from younger shoppers too, in the stereo department, though a lot of them are just lookers," he chuckled.

"Hey, what happened to that guy you were seeing?" Johnny suddenly asked.

"Mark? Oh, we still see each other occasionally. I was right, he does still live with mommy and daddy, but they're nice folks. He invited me to dinner one evening, and even though I was quite nervous, everything turned out fine. His dad is in real estate and apparently does quite well. His mom looks like a fashion model, but she's not stuck up at all. He has a cute little sister named Lani, too. She's a real sweetheart."

"Nothing serious, though?" I asked cocking a brow.

"Nothing like what you guys have, but we do have sort of a 'thing' going on, I guess."

"Friends with benefits," Tony laughed, "It's a good thing Granny is a sound sleeper."

"What about you, Tony, any new lovers in your life?"

"Well, I date occasionally, but so far nothing serious. I've been seeing this girl name Kate lately. She's Cherokee and very pretty."

"Pretty doesn't do her justice," Caleb chuckled, "She's a doll, and very sweet too."

"Whoa, back off, I don't need no competition," Tony chuckled.

"Wrong equipment, but I bet she's a great kisser," Caleb said winking.

"She is," Tony said, "and her lips are good for other things, too."

We all laughed then, but we were interrupted by dad yelling for us to come fill our plates, and for the next hour or so we chatted with the others while we stuffed our faces.

"Okay, shall we open presents now, or play some games and work off some of this food?" I asked, and not surprisingly the boys opted for the games.

On the far side of the pond, there were horseshoe pitches, tennis courts and a croquet course. Dad had brought the croquet set and horseshoes, and Johnny and I had brought our badminton set, plus four tennis racquets.

The walk around the pond only took a few minutes and our dads headed straight to the horseshoe pitch while us boys headed to the tennis courts.

While the four boys played badminton on one court, Johnny and I engaged Caleb and Tony in doubles on the tennis court, and though none of us were really that good, we had a lot of fun.

We swapped around then, and eventually joined our dads for some horseshoes, then a game of croquette. Hot and tired, we finally headed back to the shelter for something to drink, then gifts and cake and ice cream.

Zeke received a lot of nice things and he became very emotional as he thanked sincerely.  Here was a kid who had never had a real birthday party before, let alone gifts, and though it was all sort of overwhelming at first, he was starting to accept that his new life would be filled with firsts and wonderful new things.

When I opened the gift Zeke had bought me, a Leon Russell album, my face lit up and I held it up for all to see.

"How did you know?" I wondered out loud.

"Johnny helped me pick it out," Zeke beamed.

"We can all enjoy this, thank you so much, Zeke, that was very nice of you."

"Aww, shucks, it's the least I could do after...after, well, you know?" he said blushing.

I gave my new son a one-armed hug and he melted into me, then with a huge smile he tore into his next gift, a cassette tape recorder from Caleb.

"Whoa, this is too much," Zeke said, but the look on his face said he wanted this gift more perhaps than any he'd gotten so far.

"Hey, I own a TV-Stereo store," Caleb chuckled, "I got a good deal on it."

"Open mine next," Tony said, "it goes with it."

Tony's gift was a twelve-pack of 60 minute blank cassette tapes and Zeke giggled with excitement as he pulled them out of the box, "Wow, I can make lots of recordings with these..."

Once the presents were all unwrapped, everyone properly thanked with hugs, and the mess cleared away, mom brought out the huge sheet cake that she'd had made at the Bakery there in Pryor. It said: 'Happy 14th Birthday Zeke', then in smaller letters, "Happy Birthday Robert'.

I was glad she hadn't included my age, though still young and vital, I didn't need to be reminded I was not a kid anymore.

Mikey started the chorus with the birthday song, and everyone joined in, the end winding up as 'Happy Birthday, dear Zeke and Robert, Happy Birthday to youuuuu...and many more'..." causing giggles from the boys.

There was only one big candle on the cake, and Zeke and I blew it out together, then we made our perspective wishes and I grabbed the knife and handed it to Zeke.

"You get to cut the cake, since it's your first birthday cake," I said and Zeke nodded, apparently too choked up to speak.

Everyone cheered as he cut the first piece with shaky hands, then his beaming smile filled his face as he offered it to me. I graciously accepted and dad slopped some ice cream on my plate to go along with it, and I moved away so the others could be served. All the while mom was snapping photos with her Instamatic camera.

Dad had kept the ice cream at their house in the freezer till the last minute but it was melting fast in the warm afternoon heat. I need not have worried though, between all the kids and adults the four half gallon containers were quickly emptied.

After the cake and ice cream, we were lethargic again, but this time we opted to sit in the shade and rest our weary bones. We visited with our folks but the boys seemed bored after a while and went off to find adventures on their own.

Bill and Peter treated Zeke like a brother, and of course Mikey was dear to all their hearts. How could anyone not love my baby brother? In my eyes, and those of most people who met him, he was the perfect example of what boyhood should be. He was cute, smart, funny, and inquisitive. Yet he seemed to be wise beyond his years and especially sensitive to others. Empathy was his middle name, and just knowing him was a blessing.

I napped after a bit, my head in Johnny's lap as he stroked my hair, and when I awoke, Caleb, Tony, and Granny announced they needed to go. I hopped up and Johnny and I walked them to Tony's car and we lingered a long time before they finally drove away. Granny had looked a bit tired and I wondered if it was just old age or if there was more to it. Still, for a woman her age, she seemed incredibly sharp and very active. She loved taking care of Tony and Caleb, and I think that's why neither had moved out even though they could certainly afford to.

The sun began to sink lower in the west as we tossed the paper plates and cups and loaded the rest of the stuff into the back of the Bug Bus. Mom was sending most of the cake home with us, saying she and dad didn't need all that sugar, and Johnny's folks had agreed.

We drove the Bug Bus to Johnny's house then, but the boys opted to stay behind for a while though our folks did ride with us. We unloaded the stuff in the garage, minus the cake, and then went inside to visit some more with the adults. Well, technically we were adults too, but even in our 20s we still thought of ourselves as kids.

I wondered what the boys were up to, and later I'd find out they'd visited the bathroom for some mutual jerking and touching, though nothing serious went on. It reminded me of the good old days when Johnny and I took advantage of every opportunity to have some sexy fun.

The boys finally wandered back just as it was getting dark, and after saying goodbye, my folks headed home. Originally, we'd intended to drive home after the party, but somewhere along the way we'd been talked into staying the night, then going out for breakfast the next morning with my folks.

Sleeping arrangements weren't a problem, Johnny and I would sleep at his house, Bill and Peter could have my room, and Zeke could bunk in with Mikey. Then, at the last moment a new plan was cooked up by the boys.

As I said earlier, the weather was perfect that day, in fact it  was the beginning of an early Spring. The temps that day had been near 80 and even after the sun went down it was still in the 70s, with lows predicted to be in the low 60s. Not bad for March.

So, with such great weather the boys decided camping out in the backyard was the ideal end to the day. I had to admit, it wasn't a bad idea, and I figured that would give me and Johnny some privacy in my room while the boys homesteaded in the backyard with Snoopy.

Wrong! The boys wanted, no...insisted, that Johnny and I campout too. Well, I have to admit we didn't put up much of a fight, but we did insist on our own tent, which turned out to be no problem since we borrowed Uncle Joe's tent.

We'd invited Uncle Joe and his family to the birthday bash, but two of the kids were sick including Little Joe, but a quick phone call to Uncle Joe led to his delivering the tent while we were busy setting up the one dad had bought for us while we were still teens.

Both tents were about the same size, 8x10, and both were tall enough to stand up in, if you were a kid, and waterproof to some degree, not that we anticipated that being a problem.

Joe hung around to help us set up our tent and we visited and caught up on our lives and we told him once again how sorry we were that they didn't get to come to the party. They had sent Zeke a card and ten dollars earlier in the week, and once again Zeke had been near tears when he discovered even more family members who cared about him.

Uncle Joe finally left once we had everything set up and insisted on giving all of us hugs, even Zeke. Joe was like that, one hell of a great guy and by far my favorite Uncle, though I would never had told the others that.

"Your Uncle Joe is nice,"Zeke said grinning.

"Your Uncle Joe too," Mikey reminded him, "he's the bestest uncle ever."

"He...he's cool," Bill observed, looking so excited he could barely stand himself.

"Yes, he is," I agreed, "Okay, tents are set up, now let's go get our goodies and use the bathroom one last time so we won't have to wake mom and dad in the middle of the night."

Our goodies were an ice chest of pop and water, some cookies, chips, and fruit, and for Snoopy, some doggy treats to keep him out of our food.

Speaking of Snoopy, as much as Mikey loved that pooch, I think Bill came in a close second, and the feeling was mutual. Those two bonded the first time they met, and I wondered if maybe we should talk to his mom about getting him a dog of his own. I'd heard that dogs are especially smart and emphatic and can actually help people who have learning challenges or emotional problems.

***************EDIT TO HERE*****************

It was still early, too early for sleep anyway, and the boys were playing freeze tag, hide and go seek and other games, Snoopy running around and nipping at their ankles, a bundle of energy that matched the boys perfectly.

Johnny and I sat and watched for a while and eventually Snoopy came over to lay by us, his tongue hanging out and his tail wagging as he became a spectator,  the equivalent of a smile on his doggy face.

I breathed in the fresh night air and sighed, "This reminds me of when we were kids. Playing outside under the street lights or slinking around in the dark."

"Slinking and playing grab-ass," Johnny chuckled.

"Yeah, there was something magical about those times. I wonder if our boys feel that way."

"I don't think we have a patent on those kids of emotions," Johnny said, "but each person's experiences and memories are different. I'm sure these boys will remember this day for a long time to come."

"And...it's not over yet," I chuckled, "Can you imagine what fun they'll have once they zip up the tent."

"Probably the kind of fun we'll have," Johnny said placing an arm around my shoulders.

"Does it make me a bad brother to get a little excited to think about what Mikey is up to with those three?"

"Heck no, it makes you human. I get excited too, but just because it's exciting doesn't mean we have to join in the fun."

"Yeah, that would be weird," I agreed, "the thing is though: I'd almost bet that not only Mikey, but all the boys would be all for it."

"Yeah, well remember we messed with older boys when we were about Mikey's age, and the other three are full blown teens now, always horny."

"I just hope they didn't lure us out here in the hopes that we'd do that."

"Nah, I don't think so," Johnny assured me, "I think they just wanted us near in case the boogie man came wandering up the alley," he added with a chuckle.

"Remember that time Roger cut through the alley and scared the pee out of us?" I laughed, but the laughter was soon replaced by a wave of sadness when Roger moved away, never to be heard from again.

"I wonder what old Roger is up to these days?" Johnny commiserated.

"I don't know, but I hope it's all good. He was one in a million. Come on, let's go join the boys in freeze tag. It's been ages since we played..."

***************************

By ten o'clock the boys were pretty much wore out, and my only regret was that now we had four stinky, sweaty boys to deal with. However, since we had our own tent at least we wouldn't have to put up with the odor. Johnny had a better idea though.

Enlisting my help we went inside and wet four wash clothes and took them out to the boys to wipe down their sweaty bodies with. All four were shirtless now and Mikey went a step further and dropped his short, leaving him in just his white cotton briefs. Of course Bill and Peter were eager to follow suit, but Zeke seemed a bit reluctant to do so.

"We'll leave you boys to wash up and when you're done you can grab a drink and some snacks and settle down in the tent. I suggest you leave your sweaty clothes outside the tent and just sleep in your undies," I said, knowing full well those would come off sooner or later as well.

"We'll sleep nekkid," Peter laughed, "bet you guys do, too."

"Just don't come out of the tent naked," I teased, Snoopy might bite something off."

The boys roared with laughter, then Johnny and I made our exit and left them to clean up as best they could. A few minutes later that four came over and plopped down on the blanket Johnny and I had spread out and even as close as they were I didn't detect any unpleasant odors.

Mikey fished out drinks for everyone, including Johnny and me, and we sat and talked and sipped our drinks for a few minutes.

"Boy, today sure was fun," Peter said, and the other boys echoed his sentiments.

"Best birthday of my life," Zeke said, a slight hitch in his voice, "thanks everyone."

"I snaked an arm around his shoulders and bumped heads with him, "You're welcome, buddy. You're family now, and we all love you."

"Y...yeah, us...ttt...too," Bill said grinning.

"Aww, thanks," Zeke said smiling at the boy. He and Bill had become especially close, even though Peter was closer to his age, and I wondered if they weren't crushing on each other a bit.

"We should sleep outside," Mikey suggested.

"It might get kind of cold later on," I warned, but I guess you could start out there, if you want."

"Nah, we'll just go inside," Mikey decided, pretty much taking charge, "let's grab our snacks, guys, and get in the tent."

It was no surprise to me that the other three followed Mikey's lead and did as he said, and soon it was just me and Johnny again.

"That was interesting," Johnny said softly, "Mikey seems to be calling the shots."

"Is that any surprise," I chuckled, "the boy is a natural born leader."

"Yeah," Johnny agreed before a yawn overtook him, "Mmmm...you ready to turn in?"

"Yeah, if you are. Let me finish my root beer."

"Sure," he said standing to stretch as I admired his lithe sexy body then finished the soda in two gulps, ready to get it on with my lover.

"Wow, that was quick," he chuckled.

"I saw something I wanted more," I growled, "get in that tent, mister, and get naked."

"I love it when you're aggressive. Now I know where Mikey gets it," he chuckled.

Lovemaking with Johnny is never boring and always satisfying and that night was no exception. As we lay there in the afterglow after an especially vigorous '69' I thought about our sexual history. How we'd started out as naive innocent boys but soon became full blown sex maniacs. Roger may have been the one to introduce us to sex, but it didn't take long till Johnny and I took charge of our sexual antics. Along the way we'd dragged our friends along on the journey, but they'd all come willing, no pun intended.

We'd come a long way, but we'd gone the distance together and we were both sure when we crossed the finish line we'd be holding hands. So far we've been right.

My thoughts were interrupted by voices then and what I thought of as low moans, then giggles, soft sighs and the unmistakable sound of a boy in the throes of orgasm.

I giggled.

"Sound like we're not the only ones having fun."

"That sounded like Zeke there at the end. I wonder if they tag teamed him," I chuckled.

"God, that's exciting to think about. Remember how we used to do that with Gerald and Donnie?"

"And later Caleb, then Tony," I clucked, "God, we're perverted."

"Not perverted, just horny, and so are our boys," Johnny said, Healthy, happy, and horny. Nothing wrong with that. At least they're not out getting little girls pregnant."

"There is that," I chuckled.

It was quite now and for a moment I dozed, then I heard voices again, more moan, more sighs and I knew the boys were at it again.

It was going to be a long night.
