Chapter One: On the lake

John and Pete were just getting ready to head for shore to start some lunch when they heard the whap-whap of an approaching helicopter. Squinting toward the horizon they saw the bright red helicopter swinging in over the trees and dropping low over the still waters of the lake. While they watched, the chopper flared as a figure dropped from the open door and splashed into the water. The chopper banked and started a lazy circle over the area.

Both John Cole and Pete Nueclo were about the same height, about five ten. However, Pete had dark brown almost black hair with green eyes, John was a red head with hazel eyes. Having been co-captains on the swim team, they both had about the same build, although John had a little more bulk to his muscles from working summers in his fathers masonry business.

What the hell is that all about? Asked Pete

Shrugging, John said, No idea. Maybe someone's in trouble.

Just then a siren caught their attention. Turning they saw a boat heading toward the figure in the water with a siren wailing and every imaginable strobe light flashing. The boat throttled back and glided to a stop close to the figure in the water. Two more figures on the deck of the boat helped the figure from the water, then the boat throttled up, came about, and headed back in the direction it came from, toward the boat launch.

Let's check it out Pete, said John.

Pete nodded and gunned the throttle pointing their boat to the boat launch.

Rounding the breakwater by the boat launch, the two 17 year olds were stunned by what they saw. The boat they had just seen was being loaded onto a trailer towed by a fire engine red pick-up with the letters A.R.R. in reflective on the doors and Aquatic Rescue Response on the rear fenders. Parked further inshore was the idling helicopter, also fire engine red with A.R.R. on the side and Aquatic Rescue Response down the tail boom. The crewmen who weren't loading the boat were stowing equipment in the chopper getting ready to head back to their station. As the boys approached shore, all but two of the men climbed into the chopper, which quickly throttled up, sprang from the ground, and with a massive out rush of air, lifted away into the sky to disappear over the horizon.

The boys ran their boat up onto the sand next to the ramp and, after shutting down the engine, jumped ashore.

Hi, said Pete, addressing the two men strapping down the rescue boat.

Hi, guys. Said the man closest to them as he turned to face the teens.

The man was wearing a dark blue flight suit that said Pastor on the right chest and A.R.R. on the left. He was a little less than six feet, close cropped brown hair, deep brown eyes, and the rolled up sleeves of his flight suit were straining against the bulk of his arms.

I'm Brad.

Pete reached out and took Brad's extended hand.

I'm Pete, and this is John.

It's nice to meet you, said Brad, taking John's hand.

Hey! Are you done with that so we can get out of here? Oh, hi.

Luke, this is John and this is Pete.

Hiya, I'm Luke.

Luke was wearing a flight suit like Brad's. He was a little over six-one, with a full head of dirty-blond hair, penetrating blue eyes, and like Brad, the rolled-up sleeves on the flight suit, showing his last name of Gage, strained against his arms.

It's nice to meet you guys but we really gotta get going, right Brad?

Yeah, it was very nice to meet you, see ya 'round.

Same to you. Pete and John said together.

With that Brad and Luke turned, climbed into the cab of the truck, Brad driving and Luke in the passenger seat, they pulled out of the parking lot.

Did you see them?! Exclaimed Pete.

How could I miss? Said John; they were both hot. How old do you think they were?

Probably early twenties, what do you think?

Yeah, I'd say about that. Wonder what they look like without the flight suits. Hehe.

Yeah, knock it off John, I'm starved. You better make lunch soon or I'll cut you off for the rest of the week.

WHAT!?! It's only Tuesday! You wouldn't do that to me would ya, Babe!?!

Come on, let's get going, Hon. Pete said as he climbed back into their boat and started the engine.

John, playfully splashing water at Pete, pushed the boat off and climbed in. The two boys then headed back to the camp Pete's parents had rented so they could finally have some lunch.

Thank you for reading at least this far. This has is my first story I have been confident enough of to post online. Feedback and comments are welcome, however if you feel the need to flame I will, as the firefighter I am, assume that you are on fire and take appropriate action comenserate with my training. Thank you again. Merman_Resq@yahoo.com
