Last time on Psych....
Shawn, who hasn't lost all of his momentum feels his head smack into the pavement. His vision swims and he looks into the face of Carlton Lassiter, "You heard me Lassie?" His voice sounded strange, almost desperate as if his mind wasn't sure he was alive. Shawn's eyes close as pain radiates through his head. The pain is so intense he can't open his eyes, but he feels the cool trickle of blood running down the back of his head and slowly down his neck. Shawn tries to open his eyes, only to have the sunlight blind him and cause his head to explode in unfathomable torture. Shawn feels consciousness begin to slip away and he forces his eyes open. He looks into Lassiter's icy blue eyes which are wide with fear. Carlton sees the blood and that Shawn cannot seem to keep his eyes open, telltale signs of a major brain contusion. He feels his pulse race as he tries to think of some way to help Shawn. Nothing comes. Shawn pants a little as his breath slowly returns. Lassiter breathes in relief and Shawn's eyes stay locked on Lassiter, every so often they move to his mouth. Shawn's brain, addled as it was, was still sending one signal to all of Shawn's body, 'kiss Lassiter! Kiss him damn it!' But no muscles will respond. Lassiter sees Shawn's expression, it looks like desire. Lassiter falters, Shawn is looking directly into Lassie's eyes, unblinking. Lassiter feels something strange come over him as Shawn's eyes begin to lose focus and his eyelids droop shut. Shawn feels consciousness slip away just as Lassiter calls for an ambulance and he lifts Shawn into a cradle carry and begins to move quickly towards the main road.
Shawn was finally telling Lassiter about his feelings for the detective, how much he meant to him. Lassiter was shocked and appalled, "You WHAT? You love me? That's disgusting Spencer! I can't believe you turned out to be a homosexual... no wait, I can believe it. You always seemed off and now this just clinches things. I hate you and your kind, and all you stand for. Never come around the station ever again or I will file a restraining order against you." His voice was so acrid that Shawn flinched as though the words burned him physically. "You don't mean that Lassie..." His voice was weak and he felt helpless, like the fly that was about to be swatted with disdain. "You can't mean that..." "I mean it Spencer, so help me god if you ever, EVER try anything I will not hesitate to take out my gun and end you." Shawn sat down hard, he hadn't expected that, or maybe he had. Lassiter walked away and Shawn was left by himself in an empty room. Seconds later, Juliet popped into the room and said, "You told him?" Shawn nodded, he didn't trust his voice and he was sure his eyes were red from the tears that were threating to spill. "Shawn... remember what I told you." Her voice was firm and commanding, "Never give up?" Shawn said shakily. "No. Give up! Lassiter will never love you! Her voice turns cold and cruel No one will ever love a freak like you! You should have been stabbed and left to die on the side of the road." Her eyes were black with malice and she had an aura of complete evil. Shawn was frightened and completely defeated. "You're a monster, Shawn Spencer. No one can save you from me!" Juliet grew as Shawn backed away. Her hands became razor-sharp claws and her teeth became pointy and sinister. Shawn realized he was dreaming but could not seem to wake up. He tried to control his unconscious, which seemed to be running wild, to no avail. Finally he felt hands shaking his body and felt consciousness surfacing.
Shawn blinked his eyes open and saw nothing except impenitrable darkness. Oh no, thought Shawn. I lost my sight! Shawn felt panic creep up his throat and he hear his voice squeak. He put his hands to his face, wondering if his eyes had been damaged. He felt bandages and he said, "Uhh... hoarsely Hello?" He moved his hands around him, soft linens, I'm wearing a... dressing robe? No a hospital gown. Great! Shawn reached beside him where he suspected that a bedside table would be. He felt a cool glass and took it, drinking the water and sitting up fully. He reached around the edges of the bed until he felt the call button, he was about to press it when he heard voices in the hallway. He set the glass back and laid back down, resuming his position as someone who seemed unconscious. He heard the piercing voice of Carlton Lassiter first, followed by the higher register of Adam Levine. "You ran away and left him to die!?" He was yelling at Adam. "He told me to run for it. I couldn't bear to think of what was going to happen to him so I called an ambulance on my cell phone and then made a wide circle back. I turned the corner just as you chased off the gunman. I was about to try and help Shawn down when he..." His voice faltered. Shawn guessed that Lassiter was giving Adam a funny look or was sharing their unspoken conversation.
The unlikely duo walked into Shawn's room and took seats, neither speaking, at opposite sides of the bed. Shawn wasn't sure if he should let them know he was awake. They certainly weren't doing each other any favors by talking about him... in front of him. As they sat down Shawn moved his head slightly, this made them jump up and say in unison, "Shawn/Spencer? Are you awake?" Shawn groaned and said, "Where am I? Why can't I see anything? Lassie? Adam? What are you doing... wherever I am?" Lassiter said, "You fell from the third story of that building and I managed to catch you just before you hit the ground. The back of your head hit the pavement and you blacked out..." Shawn nodded, "I remember that! But why can't I see now? puts hands to face Can I take the bandage off?" "The doctors aren't sure how much damage the fall did to you. They want to leave the bandages on for a while still." "How long?" "A few more hours so that the results of the tests come back in and they can give you a clean bill of health." "okay." Adam said, "Shawn... I'm so sorry that I left you..." "-it's okay Adam. I was more worried that you might get hurt. I've been in worse situations. turns his head towards Lassiter right Lassie?" Shawn smiled and he thought both men were smiling too. "That was a dumb idea Spencer. You nearly got yourself and our lead suspect killed." Okay... so Lassie wasn't smiling. "Well Lassie... doesn't the fact that someone was trying to kill us kinda reduce the amount of suspicion that you have for Adam?" Lassie huffed and said nothing. Shawn felt Adam... or the person who he assumed was Adam, take his hand gently. Shawn was hesitant to maintain contact with Lassiter so close and Adam sensed the hesistation, he quickly removed his hand.
Lassiter cleared his throat and said, "I'm going to... uh... find the doctor, and... see what the diagnosis is." Lassiter beat a loud and hasty retreat from the room. Shawn suspected he saw the gesture. Adam leaned in close to Shawn and said, "Sorry about that Shawn. Is that the guy you are in love with?" Shawn gulped and said nothing. Adam read between the lines and said, "... like he's got a giant stick up his ass." Shawn chuckled and said in a suggestive tone, "Or something else slid up there." Adam's breath hitched and he said, "Shawn. Detective Lassiter is a lucky, lucky man. I only wish I could have you to myself. But under the circumstances, I understand exactly how you feel." Oh really, thought Shawn. "How's that?" Adam sighed. "You're doing the same thing to me that Lassiter does to you." Ouch! "Adam... I..." Shawn felt Adam put his hand up to stop him... "Shawn we already discussed this..." "Adam?" "Yeah?" "I can't see your hand when you try to interrupt me." Shawn was sure Adam was gaping at him. "How did you-?" "-Air movement..." "But-" in an exasperated voice "Fine! I'm psychic remember?" "Oh yeah... Anyway, I understand that you love Lassiter and don't want to hurt my feelings. I also understand that nothing I say or offer would make you want to leave your home. So after my concert and this investigation... we will almost definitely be parting ways." Shawn felt a lump form in his throat. Adam was so understanding and special, it hurt his heart to realize that Adam had probably left most of his potential significant others due to his touring and frequent movement throughout the United States, as well as other countries. "Adam... you were my first. And it meant a lot for me. I cannot thank you enough and no matter what happens, you will always be welcome to stay with me if you ever need to spend the night outside of the media's radar." Adam smiled and said, "Thank you shawn, you are a true friend. Something I do not get to form very frequently with my fast-paced lifestyle. My time with you has been... unforgettable. Thank you."
Down the hallway, Detective Carlton Lassiter was pacing quickly, he was waiting for the doctor to leave his office. Lassiter had prepared a list of questions to ask the doctor and was anxious to get some answers. Just as Lassiter thought he would lose his mind, O'Hara stepped around the corner and said, "Hey Carlton! How's life treating the rescuer?" Carlton snapped at her, "If I don't get some damnned answers soon, I am going to start bashing in heads!" "Woah! Lassiter! What's the matter? Just after you brought Shawn in you were smug about having rescued him. What changed?" Lassiter continued pacing, "Well apparently Mr. Levine had already called an ambulance to the scene so my role was effectively reduced as hero because of that twerp! His voice is annoying too!" O'Hara smothered a smile with her hand. Carlton turned from her, pacing quickly, "Why does Spencer want to help this guy? What makes him so special? It's not like Spencer will be basking in this guy's 'glory.'" O'Hara, who had made a lewd parallel with 'glory,' was desperately trying to stifle giggles and laughs. Failing to completely silence them, Carlton whirled around and said, "What's so funny O'Hara? Let all of us in on your little joke?" O'Hara's face smoothed over and she said, "It's nothing Carlton." "What do we know about this guy anyway...? I think he's trying to convince Spencer that he is innocent. He was practically manhandling Spencer as soon as he was awake." O'Hara muttered, "So I heard..." "What!?" Snapped Lassiter. "Nothing. I just figured that you wouldn't care if Shawn took a little abuse. an imperceptible giggle escaped her lips You seemed to think he was too arrogant anyway. What's with the sudden sympathy? Shawn will think you've gone 'soft' on him. And we all know what a tragedy that would be." At this point O'Hara couldn't stop herself and began to laugh hysterically. Lassiter, who was confused, and slightly annoyed turned back to Juliet and said, "I saw Adam put his hand on Spencer's. O'Hara, what does he think he's doing? Is he trying to... with some disgust seduce Spencer?" The thought left him nautious. O'Hara shrugged and said, "What does it matter? Shawn's always gotten the right person and hasn't let feelings get in the way."
Just as Carlton was about to respond, the doctor, who was carrying a pad, left his office. He was wearing a frown and continued to flip back and forth between two papers. Lassiter hurried over to him and said, "Doctor, what is the diagnosis for Shawn Spencer in room 115?" The doctor was somewhat taken aback, he also looked extremely tired. He turned a few pages and said, "He may be blind for the rest of his life... His occipital lobe received much damage from the trauma. If his vision does not return in the next few days, he may be blind forever. If his vision does return, he'll be highly sensitive to light. Luckily, your leap saved him from death, Detective. He should be thankful if vision is the only thing he lost. Most people aren't so lucky." Lassiter's legs felt weak and he saw down in a chair along the wall. Juliet looked at the doctor with wide eyes. "But... doctor. Is there any chance his vision will return?" "Possibly. But with out an MRI or CAT Scan, there is no way to be one-hundred percent sure." Lassiter stood and walked quickly to the room where Adam and Shawn were talking. Just as he began to open the door, Lassiter heard, "...my time with you has been... unforgettable. Thank you." Carlton made a great deal of noise with the door, trying to avoid an awkward situation. "Spencer... I just spoke with the doctor." "And...? When can I take off the bandages?" Shawn's voice was hopeful. Carlton said, "He doesn't know if your sight will return to you or not. You may be blind for the rest of your life..." His voice felt weak and Shawn suddenly felt as though everyone was talking to him from far away. The world seemed somewhat mute. Forever? thought Shawn.
Evening had approached quickly. As if I could tell the time anyway, thought Shawn. At around eleven pm he received a call from the front desk. "A man is here to see you. I am sending him up." "Okay." The nurse hung up the phone. Shit! Should have asked who it was. Minutes later he heard the door open. Suspecting it was his father he said, "I know, I should have called you. Though in my current situation the phone is a little more problematic." There was no response except a hand grabbing his own and handing him a cold cup. Shawn experimentally sipped the drink. A pineapple smoothie. "Gus? Is that you? It had better be... or else you are not getting a refund through the Psych office! Okay you'll still get one, but I'll whine about it for weeks and weeks." "Oh, you mean like last week?" The baritone voice was the sweetest sound Shawn had ever heard. "GUS! I have missed you buddy! How are you?" "Oh you know... staying out of trouble. Maintaining my body. Not smacking my head into the ground after nearly getting killed by a gunman and then possibly losing my sight because of extensive damage to my occiptal lobe. The usual." "I only got the accidental lobe once... and you never let me live it down." "Shawn... the occipital lobe is the part of the brain that controls vision and visual memories." "I've heard it both ways." Shawn could feel Gus smiling. "Even still Shawn. That was a stupid stunt! And if you ever pull one like that again, I hope you become permanently blind!" in mock fear "OOOOOOhhhhh! I'm so afraid of being blinded... again." Gus pulled Shawn in for a hug and Shawn hugged back, responding with, "Chocolate bears give the best hugs." "You know that's right."
Shawn turned to Gus, "Do we need to talk about...?" "Nope." "Well... cause I kinda wanted to..." in a warning tone "Shawn. Is this going to be weird?" "How long have you known me?" "Oh boy..." The two began to discuss everything. The case, Adam, Lassie, his feelings about them, and what Shawn was planning to do to solve the case. "If you can't see anything, we are at a serious disadvantage, Shawn!" Shawn nodded and said, "I think I have it figured out. I just need one or two more days to finalize things. weakly I want to see if my vision comes back..." Gus cleared his throat and said in a sad tone. "Yeah... of course..." "You think Lassie knows about Adam and me?" "Probably... if not, then at least subconsciously." Shawn sighed. Hopefully this won't open a whole new can of worms, he thought somewhat hopelessly.
Lassiter had returned to his own house for the night trying to put the days events out of his mind. His mind, however, seemed to have something different lined up to play over and over, in an endless loop, in his head. He kept seeing Spencer falling, and at the last moment he lept for him, just barely catching him. Then Shawn's head slammed into the pavement causing him to go blind. It was my fault, thought Carlton. If I had held him higher, he would be fine. His mind decided to the play the alternative, Shawn falling down and slamming into the earth, ribs broken, limbs torqued at all angles. Carlton rushed over and saw the light leaving Shawn's eyes slowly. "No Spencer! You've got to stay awake! You've been through worse... Wake up!" But to no avail. NO! Thought Lassiter. I saved his life and even though he might be blind... this is preferable to the other scenario. Then his mind seemed to obsess over the details at the hospital. Adam, the hand gesture, Spencer's reaction to the gesture, Spencer's overall demeanor... Was Spencer involved with Adam Levine?
Lassiter felt anger seethe beneath his skin. So the psychic was just playing the police department to give him free food and access to a celebrity so that he could get his fifteen minutes of fame? Lassiter threw his newspaper at the floor. He was mad. He should go to the hospital and tell Shawn that his little liaison was over and that the police would no longer be requiring his services. Probably Mr. Levine wouldn't need them either. The thought left a bitter taste in Carlton's mouth. Why did he care? His mother was gay... was that the issue? NO! Lassiter thought hastily, it's because Spencer isn't taking the case seriously. Another voice in his head said, When has he ever? SHUT UP! Thought Lassiter forcefully. He wasn't sure why he was mad. He thought about Adam's gentle gestures towards Shawn. It made Carlton's blood run hot. Was it envy? No... I don't give a rat's ass about Adam Levine. The other voice, which sounded suspisciously like his ex-wife said, 'Carlton... even you are not so oblivious!' Lassiter thought, Oh, I'm in love with Spencer... WHAT!? No! I despise him with every fiber of my being! He is what is wrong with the detective system! Carlton's mind waged war with itself for another hour. It finally came down to two major conflicting ideas in Lassiter's mind, I love Spencer but I cannot respect him. Where do I go from here? Lassiter sat down on his bed and thought about calling Juliet O'Hara. Maybe in the morning... yes. The morning would make things clearer for him. And as Carlton lied back in his bed he felt a sense of internal catharisis. Finally, he understood why he had always responded to Spencer's comments in such a wound up manner. I was afraid he didn't mean it. Thought Carlton.
