Taking Over Me 29

With the mopping finished, Ben rolled the bucket into the back closet and informed Bernie we were ready to leave. Not even bothering to double check our work due to trust, she told us to have a good night. I had yet to tell him about what happened with Trevor last night. The shop was pretty busy today so there wasn't a lot of downtime. As the weather warms up the coffee sales decrease, but the smoothie sales jump and they're slightly more laborious than any coffee drink.

If Ben's reaction to the news of Trevor is anything similar to Lizzie's, which I'm sure it will be because he encouraged me to mend things with Trevor, then everything will be totally fine. Lizzie reacted much more maturely than Claire, surprising me to the moon and back. She gave me words of support and caution and actually said a few things to Trevor as he came up to me. I don't know what got into her, but the Lizzie I knew would have reacted in a much more obnoxious and embarrassing way. Perhaps the old saying that you never really know someone is true no matter how good of friends you may be.

"Man are my feet sore," Ben cried as he rubbed his left arm. "Hasn't been that busy in a while. I had no idea the smoothies would be more popular than the coffee."

"Yeah, it gets like that. It's pretty stiff competition between the people who prefer the coffee versus the people who prefer the smoothies." I replied absentmindedly. I was anxious to speak with Trevor.

"You've been weird all day. Everything good?"

"Everything's great."

We rounded the corner of the building. Leaning against his truck, Trevor smiled when he saw me. I did the same, but attempted to subdue my excitement. Unfortunately, Ben tensed next to me, probably preparing for another physical conflict. But tonight the air wasn't filled with tension. Trevor wasn't here for a fight that much was obvious.

"Hey," he said as he walked up to us. Then he looked solely at Ben. "I want to apologize for attacking you. I wasn't in a good place and was doing things that altered my mind. I'm not that person. So, sincerely, I'm very sorry." Trevor stuck out his hand.

Ben glanced downwards, then at me. Trevor's apology came as a surprise to both of us and I'm not sure which one of us was more uneasy. But Ben shook his hand regardless. Whether he actually accepted the apology or did it just for me I'll probably never know. I appreciated it either way and felt greatly relieved. My newest best friend has buried the hatchet with my ex-ex.

"So, um, are you two, like, back together or . . .?"

Neither of us said anything at first. I wasn't sure how to answer that. I mean, no we're not back together yet, but saying we're working on it just sounds weird to me. Probably doesn't make sense, but it's an odd feeling.

"I'm simply trying to right all my wrongs. There have been a lot of them." Trevor spoke up.

Ben gave us a faint smile. "Well, hopefully things work out." Another silence invaded us, this time quite awkward. "Well, I'm gonna go home. I'll see you tomorrow, Travers." He turned around and walked towards his mom's car.

"Hey!" Trevor called out. "I'm gonna take him to dinner. Want to join us?"

"No, thanks. You guys have fun."

As Ben climbed into his mom's car I glanced at Trevor. Seeing him in the parking lot brought on a tremendous amount of butterflies to my stomach. With my heart racing, desperately wanting him to invade my personal space, I all but expected him to disappear into thin air. But as the seconds ticked by and another silence paralyzed us I realized he was here to stay. This wasn't some sick game on his part nor a ploy to hurt me in any way. Trevor was just being Trevor; the sweet, caring, and selfless man that I've known since I was fifteen. Different in some ways, but still the same.

"Well, uh, that wasn't as awkward as I thought it was going to be. He seems like a nice guy after all," Trevor said in a light tone.

I nodded. "Ben's a great guy. One of my best friends now."

"So you want dinner? I'm pretty hungry myself."

"I thought you were going to spend time with your parents?"

"I did," he chuckled. "And I said I wasn't going to stay the night with you. I never said I wouldn't see you."

"True," I mumbled off. "Well yeah I'm hungry. What do you want?"

"I was thinking that little Italian place up the street. You know, the one with the really good bread and butter?"

"Yeah, that sounds great. I haven't been there since . . ." I trailed off. He took me there a few days before he broke up with me.

"I know," he sighed.

"Should I meet you or?"

"No, no, I'll drive. We'll come back for your car."

Entering his truck, smelling the familiar air freshener, brought back far too many memories. The nights we spent in his little truck exceed the times we've been in my car, mostly for the convenience of the bed. We found this little spot up in the old wash to pull off and star gaze. Those nights were among my favorite. Minimal talking, a lot of cuddling, and plenty of fun once we'd had enough of the universe.

After we ordered our food the conversation grew more valuable.

"So, how are things going at home?"

"Things are okay, I guess. Nothing out of the ordinary."

"What, uh," Trevor frowned, "what's with the sale sign in the yard? What's that about?"

I took a quick sip from my iced tea. "Yeah, there's that. Um, well Tyler and Jared can't afford the mortgage. They haven't been paying for quite a few months supposedly. It was a huge shock when they told me they had to sell, but I eventually accepted the inevitable."

Trevor shook his head sadly. "Just can't believe they have to sell. That's crazy. Sorry, man. A lot of memories are in that house."

"Tell me about it."

"Have they found a new house yet?"

"Tyler said a few have their interest, but they're not sure how good their chances are after the sale." I took another drink as my throat began to dry. Thinking about moving was bringing my energy down quickly. "Can we talk about something else? I don't really want to think about it anymore."

Smiling sympathetically, Trevor said, "Sorry. You know, I've been looking forward to this all day. I haven't been able to keep you off my mind."

"Really?" My heart fluttered upon hearing that.

"Yeah. I don't want to sound too corny, but you're the love of my life, Travers. And being this way with you again feels so right. All I want to do is be with you every minute of every day."

I'm not sure my cheeks could have burnt any more than they were. Trevor was being incredibly sweet and I was loving every corny word that left his mouth. There is now no doubt in my mind that we will salvage our relationship and once again find peace in each other's arms.

"You don't know how happy that makes me feel," I said softly. "I've missed this so much. Please, will you stay the night with me? I want to be with you."

Grinning, Trevor said, "Yeah. I was kind of planning on it anyway. There's no way I can be separate from you tonight."

"Is your heart pounding as hard as mine is?"

"Probably harder," he said. "I haven't felt this nervous or excited in a very long time. I want to ask you something, but don't take it the wrong way. Okay?"

"Okay."

"Do you think our relationship was turning stale? Like, before the break-up."

I sighed deeply, staring down at the extra glass of tea the waiter had brought me. I wondered that question myself quite a few times during our relationship. I knew I loved him deeply and always looked forward to seeing him and being with him, but things were beginning to cool off. It may have been because of how frequently we saw each other. As difficult as it is for me to admit the break-up may have actually been a good thing in retrospect. Now we're falling in love all over again. We probably just needed a short break from each other—minus all the drama, of course.

"Yeah," I meekly replied. "I think it was getting a little stale. But I don't think it was either of our faults. We just saw too much of each other. We were together pretty much every single day."

"Would you have agreed to a non-break-up break?"

I carefully considered his question. I'd like to say yes, but I know I wouldn't have been okay with it. "I don't know, Trevor. Taking a break is just a stepping stone towards doom, no matter what is agreed upon."

Trevor nodded slowly, knowingly. "Well, like you said it wasn't either of our fault. Things like that just happen. We'll have to be careful this time. If you're okay with that, I mean."

"Like not seeing each other so much?"

"Sort of. Like, if one of us is feeling that stale feeling we need to tell the other person right away. And then we can figure something out. I'm not saying we'd have to take a break and not talk to each other for a few days."

"No, I get it."

"Okay, good. I'm glad I brought it up, and that I wasn't the only one who felt that way. I would've felt like an even bigger jerk if I was."

"No, don't worry about it. I guess our relationship wasn't as perfect as I always thought it was."

Trevor smiled. "It was never perfect, Travers. Nothing is perfect. There are flaws in everything, all the systems in the world. What matters is how you combat the flaws and make them work to your advantage. Our relationship was stable and affectionate, what could have been better? I couldn't even promise that, if you agree to it, our new relationship would be anywhere close to perfect. And I wouldn't want it any other way." Our waiter came over to refill our drinks. "Hey, I have a crazy idea. How about we get our food to go and eat out in the wash where we used to go star gazing?"

Oh, God, this man is perfection.

"That sounds great. I'm down."

Trevor waved our waiter back over and asked for the food to go and the check. It was a short ten minute drive to the wash once the food was ready. The entire drive over I was practically vibrating with excitement, but had to remain calm and collected. I didn't want to physically appear too excited. But damn it if it wasn't one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

The wash was on the outskirts of the city, not too far from Ben's house. Actually, part of the wash runs parallel to his farm, but it's miles long. Plenty of parts to explore and hike. The spot where Trevor and I always visited required something more athletic than an average sedan to reach. We travel up far enough to provide us enough security should other people manage to show up. That has only happened twice and wasn't as awkward as it may sound. It actually made our night of passion that much more thrilling.

Our drive to the wash was relatively quick and quiet. I think we both just wanted to enjoy each other's company, not needing to fill the space with small talk. The night air had the slightest chill, but was particularly balmy for the time of year. Our food cooled off considerably and, at least on my part, wasn't that satisfying. It had more to do with wanting Trevor than wanting food, though.

"Well, that was great," Trevor said, patting his stomach and setting aside the empty Styrofoam packaging. "How was yours?'

I smiled faintly and lied through my teeth. "It was good. I don't know why I'm not that hungry tonight."

"You always were a slow eater. Probably just filled up on tea and bread."

"Yeah, probably."

"Nice night."

"Yeah."

"Want a drink?" he asked, holding up a bottle of water. I took a swallow after him and began to feel very anxious. "You've been awful quiet since we left the restaurant. Everything okay?"

"Yeah," I smiled again. I knew he knew I was lying. But fortunately he said nothing, which would have embarrassed the hell out me. Although I was enjoying my time with him I still felt so nervous around him, as though this was our very first date ever.

Suddenly, he groaned, then mauled me. Full on, animal style, no mercy mauled me. His tongue fought mine for control. His hands gripped my head tightly, and I wrapped my legs around his waist. I went from anxious to street slut in a flash. I needed him. I needed to feel his nude body against mine, sweating, thrusting. I needed it all.

"Travers," he breathed heavily between tongue probes, "I don't want . . . to sound bad . . . but I have to . . . have you." I reached between our bodies and felt his hardened piece, and damn near melted. He pulled back slightly. "I know this probably shouldn't happen, but just being around you keeps me turned on. But if you don't want—"

"I want you." I whimpered as he nipped at my neck and then my ear. "My house. Now!"

We begrudgingly separated from each other. Our breathing was heavy and lust-filled. Our pants bulged in the front and I almost tore his off. But he grabbed the trash from dinner and threw it in the cab. I closed the tailgate and we were soon driving back to the café for my car.

Within minutes we made it to the shop. As I climbed out of the truck he said that he would run home and grab a few things before heading over. I was more than okay with that because it gave me more time to prep myself. Everything was happening so quickly I almost felt guilty. But I fought against that feeling, not wanting to ruin the night. Trevor was being incredibly sweet and romantic. Sex with him was inevitable. I only hoped my family would be asleep, or at least in their own rooms. I'm not sure how quiet we can be. This will be the first time we've had sex in months.

Luck turned its back to me yet again, however.

Tyler, Jared, and Torry were in the kitchen talking when I walked into the house. And they did not sound like they were ready to go to bed any time soon.

"Hey, Travers!" Torry said, wiping his eyes. The three of them were obviously having a joyful time laughing about something.

"Hey," I smiled. "What's going on?"

"Oh, we were just reminiscing. How was work?" Tyler asked, setting a crockpot on the island counter.

"It was okay."

"You're home pretty late."

"Yeah, um," I realized I didn't tell anyone else about Trevor. Tyler likely relayed the information to Jared, but still. How do I bring him up? Just say he's spending the night? I mean, they wouldn't care. I just want the initial embarrassment to fade as fast as possible. "Yeah, I went to dinner."

"Oh, okay. Well I baked chicken. The leftovers are in the fridge if you get hungry."

Jared finished his beer, then sat the bottle near the sink.

"I for one could use a snack," he said passively.

"Oh, God," Tyler murmured.

"Hey! That's a compliment! You cook so well, babe, that I have to eat your food all the time. I can't think of a greater commitment of my love."

Tyler rolled his eyes and shook his head. "You are insatiable."

Grinning mischievously, Jared replied, "Can't help that, either."

"So," I started casually, "uh, Trevor is staying the night with me." All three heads turned and looked at me. Jared and Torry looked absolutely flabbergasted. The sudden silence filled me with unease. "I hope that's okay."

"Yeah!" Tyler turned away from me, but before he made a full 180 I saw the smile.

"Trevor? Since when are you and Trevor best buddies again?" Jared questioned skeptically.

"That's what I forgot to tell you!" Tyler smacked his forehead. "I knew there was something I forgot this morning."

"Gee, what else have you forgotten to tell me?"

"Oh shut up. This isn't about you."

"Anyways," Jared rolled his eyes, "what gives?"

I wanted to keep the details short. He'll be here relatively soon and I still want to ready myself. The finer details can be discussed later.

"We made up. He explained everything and we're starting over."

"Oh, okay," Jared said awkwardly, turning towards his husband. "Thank you for keeping me in the loop. I feel so loved by the way."

"Poor, baby," Tyler mocked, hugging him from behind. "I'm sorry. Forgive me, sir. I do not deserve to be in your presence."

"You can earn your forgiveness later."

Tyler smacked his butt, then laughed.

"Right. Well, I'm gonna shower. It was a long day." I went into my room, grabbed a change of clothes and began the pre-sex routine.

"So, uh, it's sounding like you didn't have sex then?" Ben asked while slyly trying to adjust himself.

"No. We didn't. I'm still glad I showered, but we didn't have sex. The moment was gone. I didn't really mind. Don't get me wrong, I really, really wanted to, but by the time he got to my house . . . Well, it was already getting late. And then my family practically dragged him into the kitchen to talk. That was pretty awkward at first."

"They bring up anything about the past?"

"No, not one word about it. They talked to him like the break-up never happened, which was a good thing. The awkwardness died down relatively fast, anyway. It was just that initial 'oh, my God, my ex-boyfriend-turned-new-boyfriend is talking to my family,' you know?"

"No, I don't know," Ben laughed. "But it sounds all right. I have to say I was shocked as hell when he apologized to me. Was not expecting that at all."

"You and me both."

"You two really do match. When you were standing together in the parking lot, you two looked like fitting puzzle pieces. I hadn't ever thought of you guys as matches before. I guess it was the lame introduction I had with him."

"Thanks, Ben, that makes me feel better."

"Really?"

I shrugged. "I felt kind of guilty about just, like, abandoning you. We had some great times together and I just felt bad. I know you told me to go for him, and that was reassuring to hear, but it didn't lessen the guilt any."

"Seriously, I'm good. Don't worry about old Ben. Just don't forget all about me, okay? I'd still really like to hang out with you. I still don't know anyone else here but you." He said it with a chuckle, but I could tell he felt uncomfortable. Not because of me, but because of his situation. I don't really know other gay guys so I couldn't set him up with anyone. I mean, if I really wanted to I could tell Jake about him. It wouldn't exactly be a friendship, though. Just an occasional fuck.

"Would you rather have a new friend or a new fuck buddy?"

"Why not both?" he asked.

"It can't be both. Maybe. I don't know."

"Why?"

"I, uh, know this guy. I went to high school with him. But he's straight."

"Straight? But he . . .?"

"He is curious, I guess. Or just likes to get off. Either way it benefited me and good God is he hot. I bottomed for him, but he isn't all that big." I pulled out my phone and showed a picture of Jake's face. "See, he's—"

"Hot! I'll take him!" Ben practically shouted at me.

I snickered. "All right. I'll give him your number. I don't know if he'll be interested, but it should keep you busy every now and then."

"See, this is what friends are supposed to do."

"What? Provide fuck buddies?"

"No! Well, kind of. They're supposed to hook each other up." Ben pulled me into a quick hug. "Now I feel like I owe you one."

"You don't," I laughed softly. "Just looking out for you. Don't get attached, though. I hear straight guys hate that."
