PORTERVILLE
CHAPTER ELEVEN
"Britt, do you have a moment?"
Britt looked up from the computer screen to discover Alice standing in the doorway. He gave her a smile and said, "Always for you."
Alice Cooper sat in the chair next to his desk. She had a puzzled look on her face, and for a moment she remained silent. She gave Britt the strangest look.
"What's wrong, Alice?" he asked. "Has something happened?"
"I went to the bank at lunch today. I...I'm not sure ...I don't know what to think."
"Okay. Take a deep breath, Alice, and talk to me." Britt rolled his chair over beside her. "What happened at the bank?"
"Ever since my father's death, we have been drawing a check. My mother told me it was a life insurance annuity, and that she would receive it for the rest of her life. I knew when her time came the check would stop. Today I went to the bank to find out who I should notify about her death. Britt, there is no life insurance company. One simply does not exist.
"All I could find out at the bank was that the "proper people" had been notified and that no more checks would be issued."
"Proper people? Who the hell are the `proper people'?" Britt wanted to know.
Alice shook her head and said, "I have no idea. Like I said, I knew the checks would stop, that's not the problem. What upsets me is the fact my mother thought it necessary not to tell me the truth."
"Your mother was an honorable woman, Alice. I'm sure she must have had her reasons."
"It just makes me feel really odd to discover after all these years she hasn't been telling me the truth."
Britt's heart was racing. Like Alice, he realized things weren't adding up here. Something was not right. Aloud he said, "Alice, I'm not sure if I can find anything out, but if it's okay with you, I'll give it a shot."
"I wish you would," she told him. "I know it won't change anything, won't bring my mother back. However, I would like to know why she thought it necessary to keep this a secret all these years."
Alice soon returned to her desk, and Britt went back to his research. As he dug into the files, his mind kept returning to what Alice had told him. What had Margaret Cooper been hiding all these years? He was as puzzled as the woman's daughter about the older woman's secret.
Britt researched many files that afternoon, and when he shut the computer down for the night, he had reached the year 1985. Since reading about Tom Cooper's accidental death in 1978, he hadn't uncovered another fact that would supply a storyline of any kind. Just the usual activities concerning a small town and its people.
He decided to spend a quiet evening at home with his mother. Devon was going to be at the McKenzie home with his own mother. He had called Britt earlier that afternoon and had asked if it would be all right if he dropped by Catherine Williams' later that evening, and Britt had told him, "Please do. I want to see you."
Britt came into the house. "Mom, I'm home," he called.
Catherine Williams was in the dining room. "Hello, Britt." Smiling, she walked over and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "You look bushed. As I use to say to your father, `Rough day at the office, Dear'?"
Britt grinned at her. "Mom, you're the cutest thing around these parts." He sniffed the air. "Something smells good," he said.
"I had a feeling you might be home for dinner this evening, so I put a little more effort into the meal."
"Mom, you don't need to spoil me," he teased. "I'm not use to all this, and besides, you work too hard at the Center. You don't need to come home and feed me."
"Nonsense," she said. She gave him a gentle push, and said, "Dinner will be ready in about half an hour. Go do whatever you need to take care of."
"All right, I'll get cleaned up."
Britt started down the hall and then turned back. "Mom, Devon might drop by later this evening, if that's okay with you."
"Britt Williams, did I not tell the both of you that he is welcomed here any time?"
"Yes, Mom," he grinned.
He went to his room, placed his laptop on the desk and got ready to take his shower. He stripped his clothes off, threw a robe on and headed down the hall to enjoy a hot shower. As he stepped under the penetrating spray, Britt's mind raced non stop. While the needles did their job, he thought of all he had learned in the past few days. He still found it hard to believe that a family like the Cooper's, could have so many secrets. The actual cause of Thomas Cooper Jr's death, Thomas Cooper Sr.'s own death, not to mention the questions behind Margaret's Cooper's accident, and now, questions concerning where their income had been coming from all these years since the death of Alice's father.
After a few minutes Britt forced his brain to slow down and relax. He shut the water off and reached for a towel. He slowly dried his body and reached for his robe. He returned to his bedroom and dressed for dinner.
Britt rejoined his mother in the kitchen. As he came into the room, she turned from the counter and handed him a glass of wine. "Here you go," she smiled. "This will help you to relax."
"Do I look that bad?" Britt grinned. He took the glass and sat down at the kitchen table.
"I wouldn't say you look bad," Catherine laughed. "You just looked as if you had a lot on your mind when you came home."
Britt took a sip of wine. "I am puzzled, Mom. I just find it hard to believe that the deeper I dig into things, more puzzling facts surface. All my life, what little I knew about them, they seemed to be just your average type citizen of Porterville. They weren't fancy, society wise; yet they just decent every day people."
Britt went on to explain to his mother what Alice had discovered that day at the bank. When he had finished, he said, "Needless to say, Alice was shocked beyond words. She's confused and hurt, and she doesn't understand why her mother lied to her all these years."
Catherine listened to her son, the look on her face blank and unreadable. Finally as if weighing her words carefully, she said, "What difference does it matter? Margaret took very good care of her daughter all this time. It had to be really difficult raising a child all alone. Margaret did a very good job, in my opinion."
Britt looked at his mother, his eyes showing confusion. "You can't understand why she would be hurt because her mother wasn't truthful with her? Mom, I don't understand you. That is not how you really are."
"Just how am I?" Catherine's eyes snapped as she spoke the words.
"Mom," was all Britt said. He spoke the word softly."
"I'm sorry, Britt." His mother sighed. "I didn't mean to snap at you. Forgive me?"
"Nothing to forgive, Mom," he assured her. "I'm just a little confused on your take on all this, that's all."
Catherine walked over and took her casserole from the oven. Silently she went and took a fresh salad from the refrigerator and placed it on the table.
Britt watched her go about her work. Finally he couldn't keep his thoughts to himself any longer. He said, "Mom, what is it you know you're not telling me? I know you, and I know when you have something on your mind. Why won't you tell me?"
"Britt, I've lived my entire life here in Porterville. I have never lived any place else. Sometimes you just know' things; things that perhaps you wish you didn't. Sometimes it's just best these things' are left alone. There are feelings, for one thing. Why drudge up old, hurtful, bitter feelings? It's simply not worth the trouble it can cause."
"Well, Mom, I'm sorry you don't trust me enough to tell me what's on your mind. You do realize, however, that if something is out there, I will find it. It's just a matter of time."
"That's your business, suit yourself. Dinner is ready."
The first part of the meal passed with a heavy silence surrounding them. Finally Britt could take it no longer. He said, "Mom, please don't be upset with me. I'm just doing my job. I really don't mean to cause anyone trouble, especially between the two of us."
She smile and said, "I realize that, and I'm sorry. You do whatever you need to do."
Those words said, the rest of the meal passed pleasantly. They joked and discussed a lot of memories over the past years as they enjoyed their food. When they had finished eating, Britt helped his mother clear the table, and the kitchen cleaned, they took seats in the living room.
Britt saw a copy of his latest book on the table beside his mother's chair. "How do you like it?" he asked.
"It's wonderful, Britt." His mother's face beamed as she spoke the words. "I just don't see where you hatch all these exciting plots the way you do, but I certainly enjoy reading about them."
It was on the tip of his tongue to remind his mother that she was seeing him first hand, working to "hatch" one of those plots she enjoyed so well. Instead, he said, "I guess I can thank you for giving me such an active imagination."
They visited for another hour until they were interrupted by the doorbell announcing Devon's arrival. Britt met the man at the door and took him in his arms. "How are you?" he asked, concern showing on his face.
"Fine now," Devon answered. He hugged Britt tightly for a moment, and then turned to Catherine. "Hello, Catherine. You are very generous allowing me to drop by this evening. I really appreciate it."
Catherine Williams walked over and gave him a warm hug. "Nonsense, Devon McKenzie," she said. "You never need to apologize for stopping by here, whether announced or unannounced. Do I make myself clear?"
"Clear as light," Devon grinned.
Britt urged Devon to take a seat. "How did it go this afternoon?"
"About the way I expected," Devon answered. "Everything is set up to go with `business as usual', as they say. Tomorrow I'm going to go through Dad's records, just to get a stand on things. My mother insists now that I take over where my father left off, so, if that's what I need to do, then I want to get a better handle on things."
"I certainly can understand that," Catherine smiled. She offered him a glass of wine.
"That would be nice, thank you," Devon assured her.
Britt asked her for a glass as well, and as she left the room, he turned to Devon and said, "Is this what you really want? Do you want to take your father's place in the company?"
"I'm not sure I want the job on a long term basis," Devon answered. "For now, I can deal with it. Who knows, I might discover that I enjoy it."
"When is your father's service?"
"Day after tomorrow," Devon answered. "I wish you would be there," he said wistfully.
"I will be," Britt told him.
"What I mean is, I wish you could be there with me."
"Devon, you know I would if I could. You also know how your mother would react if I were."
"Sometimes I..."
Whatever Devon's thoughts were, Britt never found out. Catherine chose that particular moment to return with their drinks.
As she handed Devon a glass, she asked, "How is your mother?"
"She's all right," Devon answered.
"It's hard losing a mate," Catherine said, taking her chair once more.
"I'm sure it is," Devon agreed. "However, for my mother, I think the main thing she will miss about my father is telling him when to jump."
"Your mother is a strong woman, I will admit," Catherine remarked thoughtfully. "I've known her all her life, and she has always had a strong will."
"What amazes me," Britt spoke up, "is that you, Devon, you seem like neither one of them. You aren't strong willed like your mother, and you certainly don't seem to have any of your father's ways."
"Devon has his own ways," Catherine interjected. "Personally, I enjoy his ways very much."
"As do I," Britt agreed
Catherine sat her glass down beside her chair. "Which reminds me," she said, "I am perfectly all right if you want to spend some time with Devon."
"I thought I was spending time with him," her son grinned. "With the two of you," he added.
"Britt Williams, do I have to spell it out to you?" As she said the words, Britt's mother blushed, and her face became very red.
"Mom, are you telling me it's all right if I want to spend the night with Devon?" Britt couldn't keep from giving her a grin.
"What do you think?"
"Well, I'm not sure he wants that. He has a lot going on in his life these days. I'm not sure he has time for the likes of me."
"Let's go," Devon said and stood to his feet. "Thank you very much, Catherine."
"There's no need to thank me," she laughed. "I know how you two feel about each other. And," she added, "I certainly do not need a baby sitter. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself, and in fact, have been doing so for a few years now."
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
When Britt opened his eyes the next morning, he couldn't remember where he was. Nothing seemed familiar to him. He definitely was not in his room at his mothers, nor was he in his bedroom in his apartment back in the city. Then he remembered. He had spent the night with Devon. He was in Devon's bed. He turned over and watched as Devon slept peacefully beside him. Quietly he moved over and put an arm across Devon's stomach. Both lay naked between the sheets, and Britt remembered the night before, and how tender, yet intense their love making had been. As Devon lay sleeping, Britt looked at him, unable to take his eyes away. After his thing with Bruce, and the way Bruce had treated him, Britt had thought he would never fall for anyone again. How wrong he had been, he thought. He had fallen hard, for Devon, and this time, in such a way he had never felt was possible. He thought he had loved Bruce, but that love was nothing compared to the feelings he felt for the man who was sleeping beside him; the man whose bed he was sharing.
"Hey, can't you sleep?" Devon reached up and placed Britt's hand in his own.
"Oh, I've been sleeping," Britt assured him. "I was looking at you, wondering just what the hell someone like you sees in someone like me."
"Well, you realize, don't you, that I think the same of you. You are well aware of all the mixed up emotional mess my family shares, yet you seem to like me. I don't see the hell why you do."
"What I see, Devon McKenzie is a beautiful man, one who loves me very much and wants to make me happy. A man who would put my happiness above his own, I might add.
"God, no wonder you are such a damned good writer," Devon grinned. "You have a hell of a way with words."
"That may be true," Britt agreed, "but the words I speak now, they are from my heart."
Devon sat up and pulled Britt into his arms, their naked flesh touching. "I realize that very much. Britt. I love you. Since you have come into my life, you have caused such a change in me. I hope you realize that."
"I love you, Devon McKenzie. I think we both are aware of that. We know how we feel."
"The question is, what do we do about it?" Devon asked thoughtfully.
"I think that will be taken care of in due time. I see only good things ahead for us. I just hope..."
When Britt didn't continue, Devon prodded, saying, "You just hope what?"
Britt shook his head and said, "I just hope things never change between us."
"Why should they?"
"I'm not sure, Dev; I'm just not sure. The more I dig into things here in Porterville, the more surprises I come up with. I hope and pray you're not in the middle of one of these surprises."
Devon's eyes sparkled. "Me?" he asked. "Why would I be in the middle of anything? My life has been an open book around here. Even as private as my parents have been about our lives, everyone knows everything about the Porters and the McKenzie's. It has been my parent's civic duty to keep the good citizens of their town well informed."
"Well, I am here to write a book possibly, and I have to do a lot of digging to find the facts for such said book," Britt informed him. "The Porters and the McKenzie's are the center of the town, so I'm bound to discover a thing or two in searching for facts. I just hope, as I said, that whatever I find will have no affect on us in any way."
"Hey, we love each other," Devon reminded. "Long as love prevails, what else matters?"
"Say, maybe you should change careers and become a writer as well," Britt laughed. "We could write our daily chapters, side by side, desk by desk."
"No thanks," Devon smiled. "One writer in the family is enough."
Devon leaned over and kissed him gently on the lips, and their emotions quickly took hold as they gave way to feelings and became lost in their passion of living and loving.
"What's this?" Britt asked reaching between Devon's legs.
He wrapped his fingers around his lover's hard cock. He could feel the man's thick curly bush against his skin, and the touch of those tight blond pubes added to the excitement that rushed through his body.
Britt, still gripping the thick rod between Devon's legs, leaned over and pressed his lips on his lover's. The two shared a deep kiss, one filled with passion, and the excitement between the two multiplied. Suddenly Britt pulled away.
"Are you okay with this?" he asked. Britt realized that Devon had a lot on his mind.
Britt felt fingers around his own dick and heard the words Devon spoke.
"Fuck, yeah, I'm okay with this. I need you, Britt," he added softly. "Besides, we had sex last night. If I remember correctly, we had it twice. Did I seem okay with it then?"
"Oh, yeah," Britt answered.
"Then fuck me, Britt Williams," he ordered. "Long and hard," he groaned.
"I can do that."
Devon tossed him a bottle of lube, and Britt quickly applied it to his dick. He covered himself heavily with the gel and then worked some inside Devon.
Devon spread his legs and begged Britt to enter him. "Fuck my ass," he pleaded.
Britt crawled between his legs and stopped when the tip of his cock touched Devon's hairy entrance.
"Fuck me!" he cried when Britt didn't work his way inside.
Britt looked into the man's face. "I love you so fucking much, Devon McKenzie."
Those words spoken, Britt slid all the way in until the dark hair around his cock pressed hard into Devon's hairy nut sac. Dark hair mixed in with blond, both men surrendered to their emotions, allowing the feelings to rule their bodies.
"God, yes," Devon groaned as he felt Britt bottom out, his cock in as far as it could go.
Britt began with slow easy movements, causing Devon to groan all the louder.
"Harder," Devon ordered.
Britt needed no more encouragement. He slammed harder, pounding Devon's hairy hole until he could take it no longer.
"I'm going to cum," he warned.
"Do it; Fill me with your load, Britt."
"Fuck!" Britt cried out.
He began filling Devon with his hot load.
With Britt still buried inside him, Devon reached down and began jacking his dick. Britt had fucked him hard, and it didn't take many strokes for him to shoot his wad. It flew out of his dick and landed in the middle of his thick blond chest hair.
"Shit!" he cried.
Britt leaned down and kissed the man. Devon's sticky chest hair attached itself to the brown tangles that covered Britt's stomach. He broke the kiss and gave the man a smile.
"Did I tell you that I love you, Devon McKenzie?"
"Oh, yeah, you did. And you can keep telling me that," Devon added.
"You can count on that happening many times a day," Britt assured him. "For now, you need to hit the shower. We both need to," he added with a grin.
