Chapter 8
Today is the day. The day on which the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC meet up for their tour together. All the members of the Backstreet Boys, with the exception of Howie, are now at Kevin's house, which has been designated the meeting place by management. Kevin's house was chosen so that management didn't have to pay to park the performer's cars, or rent a car to pick them all up. And driving all over Orlando to pick them up in the tour bus is something that management decided that they didn't have enough time to do. So, this way everyone can just park their cars at Kevin's house, and they should all be safe with the front gates closed and locked.
Anyway, Nick drops his bags near the front door, and walks over to where Kevin stands talking with one of the PR reps that management has sent over.
"Um, Kev? When you have a free moment, I really need to talk to you."
"Okay Nick, I was just finishing up here anyway," replies Kevin, as the PR rep heads over to the dining room table and sits down at his laptop, "What do you want to talk about Nick."
"Perhaps we could go talk privately?"
"Yeah, sure," replies Kevin as he leads Nick into the kitchen, "Okay, Nick, what's on your mind?"
"I want to apologize to you for the way I acted yesterday, Kevin," replies Nick, "I really shouldn't have done that after the way Howie blew up like that."
"Nick, I really would rather not talk about this."
"Well, that's just too bad, because we're going to talk about it, Kev," replies Nick, "I'm sorry that I hurt you Kevin, that wasn't my intention. I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with you being gay, and I want to make sure that you know that."
"I was so sure that you hated me."
"Hate you? I could never hate you!" replies Nick, as he pulls Kevin into a hug, holding him tightly.
"Nick, please, don't," replies Kevin as he pulls out of the hug and turns his back to Nick.
"Kevin? What's wrong?" asks Nick, visibly hurt by Kevin's pulling away from him.
"Nothing."
"Kevin, come on, I know something is wrong," replies Nick, as he walks up behind Kevin, wraps his arms around Kevin's waist and rests his head on Kevin's shoulder, "Now what is it?"
"Nick, please, I'd really rather not talk about this," replies Kevin, as he tries to pull himself out of Nick's arms, but makes no progress whatsoever as Nick just keeps tightening his grip, "Could you please let go of me?"
"No Kevin," replies Nick, "I refuse to let go of you until you tell me what's wrong."
"Fine Nick, I'll tell you," replies Kevin, "The problem is that I've fallen in love with a guy and he doesn't return my feelings for him."
"Oh," replies Nick, slightly hurt, because he figures that there's no way Kevin could possibly be talking about him, "Well, Kev, that guy must be totally insane, because you're one of the best guys I know. Any guy would be the luckiest person on the planet to be with you."
Kevin grins a bit before replying, "Nick, you realize that you just called yourself totally insane?"
When Nick hears those words it takes a moment for the meaning to register, but when it does, he very quickly turns Kevin around in his arms so that they're facing each other and replies, "You mean to say that the guy you've fallen in love with is me?"
"Yes, Nick, it's you. I'm sorry if that sickens you..."
Kevin doesn't get to finish his sentence, because Nick suddenly pulls Kevin into a very passionate kiss, his tongue pushing against Kevin's lips, eager to gain entry.
Kevin is shocked by Nick's advances and manages to pull away. Nick gives Kevin a very hurt look, as Kevin manages to say, "What the hell?"
"You tell me that you love me, and then I kiss you and all you can do is pull away and say what the hell?"
"Nick, I don't understand why you kissed me."
"Isn't it obvious Kevin?" asks Nick, "You're wrong. I do return your feelings. I love you Kevin!"
"You love me?"
"Yes, Kevin, I love you with all my heart and soul," replies Nick, "I think I always have to an extent. The second I met you I developed a crush on you, and then about three or so years ago, I realized that I was completely and head over heels in love with you."
Kevin smiles like he's never smiled before and starts to lean in to kiss Nick, as Nick does the same. Just as their lips were about to touch, the image begins to fade away...
"Kevin? Kevin! Wake up! Breakfast is ready," comes the voice of Brian Littrell, before Kevin can feel someone shaking him.
It takes a moment, but soon Kevin comes too, with a look of intense disappointment on his face, "It was all a dream."
"What was all a dream?"
"I dreamed that Nick told me he loved me, and we were just about to kiss when you woke me up."
"I'm sorry to ruin your dream, Kev," replies Brian, "It's just that breakfast is ready, and the tour with *NSYNC starts today, so they're all going to be coming over here in about an hour."
"No problem Brian," replies Kevin, "You're right I do need to get up. And I need to forget about Nick, because it just wasn't meant to be. I need to let go of my feelings for him and move on so that I can find happiness with someone who actually returns my feelings."
"That's probably best, Kev," replies Brian, as he throws Kevin's blankets to the side and not even noticing or caring about the fact that Kevin is naked, pulls on Kevin's arm, "Now come on Kevin, get up."
----
"Well, we're here," replies Lance, as he turns the key in the ignition of his car to off and begins removing his seatbelt.
"Yeah, it looks like we might be early," replies Justin, noticing that there aren't many cars parked in Kevin's driveway.
"Well, that's possible," replies Lance, "But oh well. Come on Just."
Justin and Lance get out of Lance's car, and walk hand in hand up to Kevin's front door. When they reach it, Justin lets go of Lance's hand and rings the doorbell. About two minutes later, the door opens and Brian replies, "Oh, hey Justin, Lance, come on in."
"I hope we're not too early," replies Justin, "It doesn't look like there's too many people here yet."
"Don't worry about it," replies Brian, "Have you guys eaten?"
"We had some coffee and toast before leaving home," replies Lance, "But knowing Just as well as I do, I'm sure he could certainly eat more. I probably could too."
"Good, there's enough food in the kitchen to feed a small country," replies Brian with a grin, "Come on, Kevin and I were just about to sit down."
Lance and Justin follow Brian into the kitchen and they take seats at the table, saying their hellos to Kevin, while Brian finishes putting the assortment of breakfast food that he prepared this morning onto the table. While Brian isn't a culinary genius, he can certainly hold his own in the kitchen.
"Where's Kristin and Leighanne this morning?" replies Justin, obviously having no way of knowing that Kristin and Leighanne are no longer a part of Kevin and Brian's lives.
"Kristin and I are getting divorced," replies Kevin, in response to Justin's question, before Brian replies, "And I've called off my wedding to Leighanne."
"Why?" asks Lance, who is to say the least quite confused by this revelation.
"Well, you're going to be on tour with us, so you'll likely find out anyway," replies Kevin, "I'm gay. I only married Kristin in a very poor attempt to deny that fact. I realize that that was wrong, and that is why I've filed for divorce."
"As for me," replies Brian, "I've always known that I was bi-sexual and that while I did love Leigh a lot, I really do prefer men. As we got closer and closer to our wedding day, the doubts started piling up and I came to the conclusion that I just couldn't in good conscience marry Leighanne."
"Well, I suppose first off I should just tell you that both Justin and I are perfectly fine with your being gay Kev, and your being bi, Brian. And I can safely guarantee that the rest of *NSYNC will have absolutely no problems with it either."
"Yeah, it is of course not a commonly known fact," replies Justin, "But 80% of *NSYNC is gay."
"You mean 4 of the 5 members of *NSYNC are gay?" asks Brian, "Which one isn't?"
"Joey," replies Justin and Lance in unison.
"What about Joey?" asks Joey, as he walks into the kitchen with Nick and AJ following.
"We were just telling Kevin and Brian that your boring ass was the only straight member of *NSYNC," replies Justin, with a grin, as Joey, AJ, and Nick sit down at the table.
"Justin don't make me hurt you," replies Joey, with a menacing grin.
"Joey, you know that I can kick your ass," replies Lance, "And if you even lay so much as a finger on my husband, I'll kill you."
"Husband?!" asks Kevin, Brian, Nick, and AJ in unison.
"Yes," replies Justin, as Lance and Justin hold up their ring fingers, "Lance and I have been together for a year and a half. We exchanged vows a few months ago, so we're married."
"Lance and I have been talking," replies Justin, "about possibly moving to Vermont and making that our primary home, and in turn make our union legal, at least in the eyes of Vermont law."
Hearing this conversation sends chills and shooting pain throughout Brian's body. When Justin explained that he was married to Lance, it was like someone shoved a very sharp butcher knife into Brian's heart repeatedly. His love for Lance is of course the reason that he called off his wedding to Leighanne, and now he's found out that Lance does indeed like guys. Only problem is he's married to Justin Timberlake. Knowing that he is on the verge of tears, Brian jumps up and runs from the room without a word, leaving Justin, Lance, and Joey looking very confused.
"I'm going to go look after Bri," replies Kevin, "Nick could you explain?"
"Sure, no problem, Kev," replies Nick, as Kevin leaves the room.
"Explain what?" asks Joey.
"First of all before Joey, AJ, and I came in," replies Nick, looking towards Justin and Lance, "What did Kevin and Brian tell you two?"
"Well, they informed us that Kevin is divorcing Kristin," replies Lance, "Because his marriage to her was a sham to help him deny that he's gay."
"And Brian said that he was bisexual, with a preference for men, and so he's called of his wedding to Leighanne."
"Okay, well then Justin, Brian didn't tell you the entire reason for calling of his wedding," replies Nick, with a bit of a frown, "I'm not exactly sure how to tell you this."
"Just say it," replies Justin.
"Well, Justin, Brian called off his wedding to Leighanne because he's in love with someone else," replies Nick.
"Who?"
"The person that Brian loves is sitting in this room actually," replies AJ, "and it isn't a BSB member."
"Who does Brian love?" asks Joey, hoping that it isn't him.
"Initials would be JLB," replies Nick, as he's met with somewhat dumbfounded looks, as Joey suddenly replies, "There are no *NSYNC members with those initials. Not anymore at least."
Nick takes a moment to process that, and then replies, "Okay then let me rephrase that, the initials of the person Brian loves are JLT."
"He's in love with me?" asks Lance, who knew perfectly well who Nick meant when he said JLB, considering that that would be his initials using his stage and maiden name, James Lance Bass. However after he exchanged vows with Justin, he changed his name to James Lance Timberlake.
"Yes," replies AJ.
"That's why he ran out of here," replies Nick, "He called off his wedding to Leighanne because while he did love her, he loves you much more Lance and figured it wouldn't be right to marry Leighanne when he has deeper feelings of love for someone else. And now he's of course found out that he can't have you, because while you are gay, you're married to Justin."
"I don't think I want to imagine how Brian is feeling right now," replies Justin, "I mean he called off his wedding only days beforehand because he loved someone else, and now he finds out that he can't have that person. He must be getting torn up inside right now."
"Yeah, that's probably an understatement," replies Nick.
----
Meanwhile, upstairs in Brian's bedroom, Brian lays cradled in Kevin's arms. Brian is thoroughly soaking Kevin's shirt with his tears, but of course Kevin doesn't care about that. All he's concerned with is doing his best to console his cousin. Part of it is because he just can't stand to see Brian in pain, but another reason is because Kevin fears that if Brian's stress level gets too high, he might have some complications with his heart. It has happened before that a very high stress level caused Brian's blood pressure to skyrocket and in turn pass out.
"Oh God, Kevin, I can't have him," screams Brian through his sobs, "Oh God, why? Why?"
Kevin just holds his cousin tightly in his arms, and gently runs a hand through Brian's hair, trying as hard as he can to console his cousin, "Brian, calm down. I know you're hurting that Lance is with Justin, but you had to know that there was a chance that he was already involved with someone else."
"Yes, I knew there was a chance," whimpers Brian, "I was just hoping that if he was involved with someone else that it was a girl. The fact that I know he's gay and I still can't have him only makes it worse."
By this point, Brian is crying so hard that he can hardly breathe, and his tears long time ago made it impossible for him to see. Kevin continues to cradle and rock his cousin in his arms, humming softly, and running a hand gently through Brian's hair. Kevin just wants to see Brian calm down, but Kevin can certainly understand why Brian is so upset. Kevin knows what it's like to love someone with all your heart, and not be able to have that person.
----
"You mean to tell me that Brian Littrell is bisexual and in love with Lance?" asks JC, who arrived with Chris a few minutes after Brian ran upstairs. Nick, AJ, Joey, Lance, and Justin in turn explained what transpired to JC and Chris when they arrived.
"Yeah, he's in love with me alright," replies Lance.
"How do you feel about that, Lance?"
"Well, Chris, it's very flattering," replies Lance, as he places his arm around Justin, "But I'm a one-man kind of guy, and Justin is that man."
"Well, Chris, it looks like maybe it isn't impossible after all," replies Justin, with a grin towards Chris.
"What's not impossible?" asks Nick.
Chris shakes his head at his band mates as if to tell them to not say anything, but JC speaks, "Chris admitted to us the other day that he likes Brian."
"Hmm, well that's a good thing," replies AJ, "I've never been much of a matchmaker, but perhaps we should work on Brian a bit. Get his mind off of Lance and get him to start thinking about Chris."
"That sounds just a little to manipulative," replies Joey, "I think if anything is going to happen between Brian and Chris, we should let it happen on it's own and not push it."
"Joey is right," replies Nick, "I know Brian better then almost anyone. He would catch on to what we were trying to do, and then he'd hate us for it. His mom used to set him up on dates as a teenager, and trust me Brian hates it when other people do that to him."
"Where's Howie by the way?" replies JC, as he notices that Howie is nowhere to be found, the only member of the BSB or *NSYNC that has yet to arrive.
"He called management this morning," replies AJ, "He's not going to be joining us on the tour bus for this tour. He's booking flights to all of the tour dates, and hotel rooms in separate hotels from where we're staying."
"Why?"
"He doesn't want to be around Brian and Kevin," replies Nick, "Because as he put it, they're fucking faeries."
"Brian and Kevin told us yesterday," replies AJ, "And Howie exploded. Calling them fucking faeries as well as faggots. I think he's afraid that if he spends time with Brian and Kevin that they'll convert him or something."
"So in other words, we can expect that Howie's reaction to the fact that 4 of the 5 members of *NSYNC are gay will not be good?"
"Precisely, JC," answer Nick and AJ in unison.
"So, what about you two?" asks Joey, looking at Nick and AJ.
"What about us?" asks Nick.
"Gay, straight, bisexual?" elaborates Joey.
"Oh, I'm straight," replies AJ.
"What about you Nick?" asks Lance.
"Um... uh..." stutters Nick, "I'm... uh..."
Nick suddenly gets up and runs from the room and locks himself in the first-floor bathroom. Nick still can't say it out loud to his friends for some reason. Nick honestly doesn't understand why he couldn't say it out loud, considering that everyone in that kitchen with the exception of Joey and AJ are also gay. But, Nick has never been able to say that he's gay out loud. It's as if the word is on the tip of his tongue yet no matter how hard he tries, he just can't say it in reference to himself.
Nick has never actually told anyone that he's gay. While Nick's sister BJ does know that Nick is gay, it's not because he told her. She figured it out on her own. Nick asked her how, and she gave two reasons. One being a woman's intuition, and another being that after having dated four guys who turned out to be gay, her gaydar has become very well developed. Anyway, BJ is the only person with whom Nick feels comfortable enough to talk about his being gay with.
Nick begins to get a bit short of breath, and quickly splashes some cold water on his face, before pulling out his cell phone and dialing.
"Hello?"
"BJ, it's Nick. I really need to talk to you."
