Chapter Five: The stupid lady who walked in the doctor's office, Mrs. Thomas, was still standing in front of me, after saying everything would be "fine." I didn't believe a word she said. I looked over at Matt. He just had this grim look on his face. Dr. What's-his-face had a nonchalant look on, and Mrs. Thomas actually seemed to care. Pssht...yeah right. She touched my hand, and the only reason I hadn't jumped away from her, was because I felt nothing at the time. What was I supposed to feel? I was finally getting to care about Matt. I REALLY liked him. Every time I got close to something, my life changed! Well, I'd be damned if I got used to that fucking home! Oh yeah, about that lady, "Paul, we need to go now, Dr. Mitchellson is waiting for you." "Dr. Mitchellson?" "He's the head of the home." She paused for a while, as if she was giving me time to let that sink in. "Okay, let's go." I was getting off of the observation table when a thought struck me. "What about my stuff?" "Oh, you're belongings will be picked up later. As of now, clothes and necessary items will be found at the home." She turned around and started walking towards the door. I didn't follow. I just stared at Matt's diverted eyes. He wouldn't look at me. I know he felt guilty for all of this, but it wasn't his fault. He wasn't the reason why they took me. He didn't make me come take a STD test here. Oh wait. HE DID. Bastard! I left.

The home was surprisingly...comfy. I was expecting this cold brick place that was torn down, and had poor kids running around. It was the exact opposite. The home felt like a...home, except much larger.

The building looked sort of like a school, where the left half of it was the girl's side, while the right half was the boy's. There were two levels. The bottom floor had all of the classes, while the top floor held the dorms. Each room was shared by two people.

The only reason I knew of all this, was because Ms. Thomas implored that I take a tour. Whatever!... I would do whatever it took to get out of here.

Anyway, now after meeting Mr. Mitchellson, I was sitting in my dorm room...alone, because everyone was in classes still. The rooms were fairly large, with two beds, two dressers, one TV, and two desks. The items were split equally between each half of the room except for the TV, which was right in front of the space between the beds.

Speaking of beds, mine was actually comfy, and the mattress looked new. WOW,... this home is better than my ex- home.

Great, now I'm depressed. I sighed and laid down for a nap. It'll be a while before I had to do anything.

When I woke up, I yawned then opened my eyes, only to reveal a boy sitting across the room, on his bed...of course staring at me. I stared back...well, only for a little while. It got boring. I averted my eyes. "Who are you?" He had a timid yet manly voice. "I'm Paul." He nodded a little, and then said, "I'm Casey. So I take it you're new here?" No shit, Sherlock!! "Uhh...yeah." There was a lull in the conversation for a while. I decided to end it. "So...what can a guy do for fun around here?" Casey smiled a little. "Well. There's a game room downstairs. Most of the guys hang out there." I smiled...big. Yaah, fun! "Let's go!" He lost his smile a bit. "Uh...that's okay. I'll just stay here. I got homework and stuff, so..." "Oh, well...off to the game room, I go!" I laughed out loud, and then left.

The game room wasn't hard to find at all. All I had to do was follow the noise. It seemed like everyone was in there!

When I walked in, a few fuseball games stopped, and a lot of heads turned and stared. Once again, I glared back. After a while, someone yelled, "Hey! Aren't you that new kid?"

"Yeah..."

"Hey! You're rooming with that fag!"

Everyone burst out laughing, while I was disgusted.

"What's wrong with a fag?"

"Yeah, what's wrong with a fag?"

I looked over at the intruding voice and saw someone I thought I'd never see...

DAVID!

"What are you doing here?!"

I had a smile on my face, so he knew I was happy to see him.

"It's a long story..."

"We could go talk in my room."

"Yeah, sure. Let's hit it." We walked back up to my...well...Casey and my dorm room. When we walked in, Casey looked up in question, then I saw his eyes slightly bulge, and you could tell he was uncomfortable.

"Uh...Casey, this here's my friend David."

"I know who he is." He said it matter-of-factly.

"Oh!..."

I looked over at David, and he shrugged. I tilted my head over towards my bed. David got that hint, and we sat down.

David looked up at me expectantly with a smile that I could never forget.

"I missed you a lot, Paul."

I smiled back. "Same here."

"I was so devastated when you moved out..." his smile faded.

"Anyway. Long story short, I sorta got caught trying to sell myself to a guy, but because I wasn't actually doing the deed, they let me off with coming here... seeing as though my parents don't want me."

He said the last part with disgust and bitterness that I could very well understand.

I rubbed his back. "Well, at least now, we don't have to..."

I looked over at Casey who immediately looked down at his book, pretending he was reading.

I lowered my voice. "Sell ourselves..."

He nodded, and then asked, "So...why are you here?"

I sighed. "Matt wanted me to go take an STD test, and they found out that he wasn't my real guardian."

David's face went grim a little when I mentioned Matt's name. "Why'd he want you to take an STD test?"

"He wanted me to be safe." I shrugged.

"So you guys ARE an item, huh?!"

I smiled...then frowned. "We WERE. I don't know now."

"It'll be okay, Paulie."

I shot him a glare, to which his face fell.

"That name's reserved for Matt!"

His face fell more.

The next day was a Saturday, so there were no classes. Basically, I had to roam around this hellhole, doing nothing. So when I got up, I immediately went searching for David. He said he was in room 224. Considering that I'm in room 21', I walked down the hall watching the room numbers for David's room. Soon I came up to room 224, so I knocked. After a moment, David appeared at the door with a sleepy smile. "What are you doing here?" I shrugged. "I figured you'd wanna hang out?" "In your nightclothes?" I sighed. "Can we talk?" His expression turned from one of curiosity to worry. "Sure." He opened the door wide enough for me to walk in, and I did. His room looked exactly like mine, except half of it was filled with junk, and a boy covered in a blanket, snoring. "Roommate?" "Yeah. He snores loud as hell." He laughed for a bit, then sat on his bed. "Whatcha wanna talk about?" I walked over to his bed and sat. "Truthfully, David, do you think I have, like, a curse or something?" David jerked his head back some in surprise. "No...why do you think that?" I sighed. "Every time I fall for someone, they wind up leaving me. Am I really that terrible?" David's eyes widened a little. "Of course you're not, Paul. You're perfect. I mean, your hair's pretty, and you have a great body, but other than that, you have a good heart. I would love to..." I looked up at him when he stopped. "Love to what?!" He bit his lip. "I meant that I'd love to...have you...as a, uhm.... I meant that you're a great person." I looked at him like he was crazy, but he waved his hand submissively, and continued, "Anyway, I just think you're great. Maybe there's a reason why no one is working out for you. Maybe...." His voice grew quieter. "Maybe there's some one else?" "You think Matt was cheating?!" His shoulders fell. "No. I think maybe fate wants you to be with someone else." I looked over at him with an amused smile. "Yeah right, David." "No, really!" "Oh! I suppose you're one of those people who wanna get in my pants, huh?" I burst out laughing, but when I looked over at David, he had a nervous smile on his lips. I elbowed him. "No need to get nervous, David. You're my best friend. You KNOW we wouldn't be together like that." I smiled at him. He smiled back. I wondered why his eyes were sad, but his smile put me at ease.

Later David and I decided to chill out in the game room, so I left to go get dressed. When I walked in my room, I saw that Casey was already dressed and was reading the same book from yesterday.

"Sup?"

Casey looked surprised to see me. Had he not seen me come in?

"Oh!... Uh... hey, Paul!"

After a while of uncomfortable silence, Casey asked a question.

"Paul...do you know David?"

I nodded like it was nothing.

"Why?"

I turned away from him and start rummaging through the dresser, which supposedly already had clothes in there for me.

"Uh... no reason. I just heard that he was... gay."

He squeaked out the last word.

I turned angrily towards him.

"So what if he is?! I'm gay!"

Yup, I'm getting bold. Who cares if he knows, or the whole school! I could care less if I got kicked out of this place!

His already nervous expression turned pale.

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to... I didn't mean..."

He took a deep breath.

"I didn't mean to offend you, I just wanted to know if... if he was or not."

His gaze was no longer directed towards me, but held stealthily on the carpet.

It suddenly clicked.

"You like David!... Huh?!"

I was grinning ear to ear. This is so great! David used to always tell me how he wanted someone to actually love him.

If it was even possible, Casey's face paled more.

"I... No, no! You've got it all wrong! I'm not!..."

I just smiled back, while spotting some blue jeans that looked around my size in the dresser. I smelled them... Clean! I started putting them on while saying,

"It's okay if you like him Casey. Maybe I could set you guys up."

His complexion started to return to normal color.

"Rea- really?! You think you could!... That would be great!"

He looked a little down again.

"You think he would like me, though? I'm not that hot, and..."

After finding an okay shirt, I put it on, and then answered,

"You're hot and you know it, Casey!"

I poked my head through the shirt and saw Casey blushing. I then sat down next to him on his bed.

"He likes genuine people, Casey. Just show him you're sincere and actually want to love him. He'll eat it up."

I gave him a smile, patted his leg, and then got up.

"You work on how to approach him. For now, I gottah go!"

I dramatically exited the dorm room to go meet David.

After meeting up, David and I went to the game room to play some PlayStation. The home, surprisingly had some newer games, but their collection was nothing compared to the one at Darryl's house. David and I just decided to play some old Mortal Kombat. He was kicking my ass, but that's expected, because I almost never play games. I couldn't care less. What I WAS caring about, however was Casey and his supposed love for David. I smiled. This should be great. "Hey David." "Yeah." He was leaning into his lap, rapidly pressing buttons, like he actually had to work hard to beat me. I'm surprised he was actually listening to me. "What would you do if I told you someone is madly in love with you?" I giggled some, but his expression was serious. He even paused the game. "Do you wanna go somewhere else to talk?" I was confused by his seriousness. "No..." I rolled my eyes some. "So, like I was saying, SOMEONE has this huge crush on you." I was wearing a coy smile. I saw David swallow then bite his lip. "Look, Paul." He fidgeted a little. "I really...I really like this SOMEONE too." He was staring into my eyes...almost the way Matt did. It creeped me out a little. I started smiling broadly, though, to take some of the edge off. "I can't believe this! I actually hooked somebody up!" He looked confused, so I explained. "Casey has the hots for you, and you like him back. This is so great!" I was smiling in my cupid bliss. "How'd you know it was Casey anyway?" His small smile faded. "Casey? Casey's the one who..." "Totally wants your hot boy ass? Yup!" David and I usually joke about his 'hot boy ass', but he didn't seem to be laughing. Matter-of-fact, he looked like he could cry any minute. "Look, David, I was just kidding about the hot boy ass thing, you know?" He nodded, but I got the feeling that he was somewhere else mentally. I was STILL confused. "Why aren't you happy? You've finally got the lover that you've been waiting for." He shook his head a little. "No...I didn't!" I wanted to question David some more, but I knew he didn't want to talk anymore. I let him leave. I was still thinking, though, "What'd I do wrong this time, and who is this lover that David's been hiding from me?"

I left David alone for a little while, but after a half hour, I decided to go check on him. I knocked softly on his room door. No answer. I knocked a little harder, accompanied by,

"DAVID!"

The door was opened, and what I saw scared the crap out of me. David's face had red streaks and his hair was a mess. He looked like he'd been crying all day. Softly, I said,

"Shit, David..."

He looked annoyed.

"What?!"

I glanced over his body once more, then pushed my way in. Shaking my head, I replied,

"Something's up."

"Hmm. You think?! You're so dense, you know!"

I immediately got defensive. Who did he think he was!

"Whoa!... Wait a minute! I'm sorry you can't work things out with Casey, or whatever, but don't catch a fucking attitude with me...especially when I'm trying to help your ass!"

"Really?! Is that what you think you're doing?! Cause to me, you're only making things worse!"

"I've never done anything to you!"

"Except ignore me! It seems like every day I tell you how much you mean to me, and how I've missed you! I go on and on about your looks and personality! I talk about how I need someone to love me, and I always hint at how maybe you need `somebody else'!"

David started pacing the room.

"I love you Paul! I fucking love you! It rips my heart out every time you talk about Matt...or George...or any other guy that's hurt you!"

He stopped pacing in front of me, and looked into my eyes.

"Because I know I could do better! I would never hurt you, Paul, and I feel like I know you better than anyone else! I rack my brain everyday trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong- what makes you love them and not me! It hurts so much having the one you love so close, yet so fucking far away!"

By then tears started falling from his eyes again. He shrugged.

"What am I doing wrong?! Paul! Help me love you!"

To say that I was fucking surprised would be a HUGE understatement. I never noticed David hitting on me, or anything like that. I just thought he was my best friend- that we were just joking. I didn't know what to say. And I didn't have to, as someone knocked on the door.

Casey walked in, and stated,

"Uh... Paul, Dr. Mitchellson said someone was here for you. Uhm... I think he said... Matt."

I looked over and met David's eyes.

"I gotta go..."

I uttered it softly and full of shame.

"I know!"

He didn't say it harshly. He expressed it matter-of-factly, although I'm sure I saw tears build up in his eyes.
