Chapter 5
I knew I had too. If I wanted it to be ok I had to be the one to take the first step! As stubborn as they were, I knew they wouldn't. Still, I couldn't seem to catch my breath. It wasn't as hard as I knew I was making it seem. I kept telling myself, "Get your fat ass to the door!" when I was finally there why couldn't I bring myself to knocking. I just stood there staring at the white door what seemed for hours, until the door suddenly flung open.
Ayla "Dude, you've been at the door for twenty minutes! Get your ass in here! You're starting to bug!"
"Wait, you want me to come in?"
Ayla "Well, I don't really feel like standing by the door all day so, yeah."
"Are you and Rain going to jump me the second the door closes behind me?"
Ayla "If we wanted you dead, you think you'd be at the door breathing?"
"Yeah, I guess you're right. Wait, unless you wanted me to have a slow and painful death!"
Ayla "Dammit! If you don't get you're ass in this house I'm going to hurt you so bad , you're going to wish I killed you!"
I ran past Ayla fearing her wrath. I made it past the living room into the kitchen where I found Rain cooking up some lunch. Right away she noticed the fear in my eyes.
Rain "Annoyed Ayla again?" I looked over my shoulder and saw Ayla locking the door and heading towards me.
"I don't want to die yet!" Rain "Dude, I think it's a little late for that, she's coming."
I looked around for somewhere to hide, hell, for a window to jump out of!
Rain "God, sit you're ass down! You're making me nervous!"
At that second Ayla walked into the kitchen and gave me the evil eye. I had to hold back my girly scream in the fear it might piss her off even more. I knew it! I was doomed!
Ayla "Yeah.."
I didn't know what to do. Ayla looked at a lost for words. She looked scared.
"Yeah.... what?"
Ayla "Shut the hell up!! I'm trying to say something here and your not helping!"
I jumped at her screams and nearly knocked Rain to her ass.
Rain "Fucking shit! Get the hell off me!"
Ayla "Dammit Ethan!! No ones going to hurt you!"
At that second Ayla grabbed me and dragged my ass to the table and shoved me in a chair. She took a seat across from me. Rain turned the stove off and served us all soup and sandwiches. She then took the seat next to me.
Ayla "Look, about the other night, I'm sorry."
I nearly fainted at the sounds of an apology coming from Ayla's mouth. You need to understand, Ayla doesn't do apologies! She makes you apologize for being right! She's above apologies!
Ayla "I know you and Mercy have your problems. I don't exactly know what happened between you two, but your still both my friends. Still, I should respect the fact that you don't want to talk about her."
"Ayla, it's not that I don't want to talk about her, it just hurts to. Then it pisses me off and I just don't want to catch myself talking bad behind her back."
Ayla "I know, it's just I miss you guys. Things were so much better when we were all friends"
Rain "Oh yeah, back in our youthful years! Man I hate you Father Time!"
Ayla and I looked at Rain clenching her fist to the sky. Her eyes filled with hate. Yeah she's crazy!
Ayla "Yeah, Rain. You have a twitch in your eye." Rain just stared at us dumbfounded.
Ayla "Anyways, I'm sorry."
"So am I."
Rain "There, it's said and done. Can we just put it past us?"
Ayla "Yeah now lets just forget it happened and go back to what we considered normal!"
"Deal"
How lucky was I? These two friends of mine didn't even mention the fact that I blamed them for losing a good friend. I mean I know that I didn't really blame them. They acted like nothing happened. We just picked up where we left off from the last time we talked, before the fight. I even stayed with them until pretty late.
It was about nine when I finally made it home. It was when I was making my way to the door when I noticed a figure standing at the door. It scared me at first, not expecting to see anyone. As I got closer I was able to start making out the features on the person. I could see the shaved head and the imprints of dimples on each end of a great smile. To my surprise, Chris was standing at my door.
"Chris, what are you doing here?" His smile seemed to fade at the sound of my question.
Chris "I'm sorry. I tried calling before I came, but you didn't answer. But, if it's a bad time..."
"No, it's just I didn't expect you or anyone to be here."
Chris "You sure?"
"Yeah it's fine."
I walked passed Chris and noticed his smile had returned, only not so cheesy this time.
"So what's up?"
Chris "Here."
Chris handed me a bag from blockbuster with a movie inside. When I pulled the DVD out, I realized it was the same movie we were watching the night of the fight.
Chris "I was thinking you never had a chance to finish the movie the other night. Thought maybe since we both had the night off we could watch it."
How sweet was that of him. I knew what I needed to do. I had to turn him down in a way where he wouldn't be hurt. I needed him to know I thought of him as a friend and nothing more. If he was ever to find out I was gay, I'd lose him forever. He had to go.
"Yeah, that be great!"
Chris' smile went back to cheesy. He slowly walked passed me and even paused for a second in front of me. I looked into him eyes and he looked back into mine. I wanted so bad to pull him into me. The seconds seemed like hours. His smile was even gone, just a blank face. I felt like he wanted to tell me something. Why was he doing this to me. He finally just smiled and kept walking. All that was left in front of me was his sweet smell.
I looked towards the night sky and saw a shining star. I knew I did the wrong thing. But I couldn't tell him no. I kept my eyes on the star and whispered to the sky. "Please, let this be right just this once." That night ended like many other nights ended over the next few months. Chris and I would finish the movie and go off to bed. He'd be too tired to drive, so he'd just stay the night. We'd both argue about taking the couch until we'd decide to both take the bed. Strangely, it wasn't weird or uncomfortable. At times we'd awake with an arm around one another, but nothing more would ever happen. It became a routine, we even shared a tooth brush. In a way it was like we were in an unspoken relationship. We never even talked about waking up in each others arms. We never even told our friends about our nights alone. These were our secrets. Chris even grew closer to my friends. He would even hang with them without me. He was even learning to throw Ayla off his trail for a bit. Still, she always found her way back to him. I bet they even had there secrets from me. Chris was one of us. He was becoming family. I even took him to my nephews birthday party. My Brother and him had even formed a friendship. This guy was becoming perfect. If only he knew he was what I always wanted. If only he knew he was my man.
