I'd like to dedicate this story to Jesse.

OFF-THE-ICE HOCKEY

Chapter 2

Saturday morning. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. Jesse, on the other hand, was moody and brooding in his bedroom. He hadn't left it for most of the week and had been able to convince his mum that he was ill and had missed all of the school that week. He didn't know how to face Sean after what had happened. He had sent him a couple of text messages, but he hadn't replied. Jesse had completely given up trying to talk to Sean and had instead decided to take the only course of action: to sulk. He laid curled up in his bed listening to some depressing songs. How could he have been so stupid? How could he compromise his friendship with Sean like that? Sure, Sean was into it as well, but he still couldn't believe that he hadn't stopped it. He had had fantasies, but that's all they were. He never ever really wanted to let them happen.

"Jesse! Breakfast!" his mum called up to him.

He slumped out of bed and dragged his bowed, restless head down the stairs and into the kitchen where his toast was there waiting for him.

"How you feeling today? Better?" Jesse's mum asked him, feeling for his forehead temperature.

"Mum! Leave it please. I'm fine. I just need some sleep and I'll be fine."

"You sure? I can make an appointment with the doctor if you want."

"No!" he shouted. She looked hurt. "I'm sorry mum. I just got a headache right now. I've had a bad week and I just need to get some rest and I'll be fine."

"Ok. Well, if you're sure... Why don't you call Sean and ask him to come round. He hasn't been here for a while...I mean, the refrigerator is completely full." Jesse laughed. "Is everything okay between you two?"

"What? Yeah. Yeah, everything's fine. We've just been a bit busy with all of the schoolwork we've had. I'll call him later."

"Ok. Well, I gotta get going. There's work to do and bills to be paid. There's some leftovers in the fridge you can have for lunch. Tell Sean he can help himself to whatever; just make sure you clean up after yourselves. Ok? Have a nice day." She kissed him on the cheek and walked out the back door. Jesse heard the car pull out of the drive as he started on his rock hard toast. He binned the rest of it and began to head back upstairs when the phone rang. He answered it.

"Hello?" Nothing. "Hello? Is anyone there?"

He shrugged and was about to put the phone down when he heard a voice come from the receiver.

"Jess?"

"Sean?" Jesse asked, pulling the receiver back up to his head.

"Yeah. Hey..." Pause. "How you been?" Sean asked.

"Ok. You?"

"Not bad...I was just wondering, cos you...weren't at school all week and...I..." he broke off.

"Yeah, I wasn't feeling too well."

"Oh. You ok now?"

"Yeah."

"Look, Jess. Can we talk? Can I come over?"

"Err, yeah..." Jesse said abruptly without thinking. Then, "Whatever."

"Cool." He hung up.

Jesse stood there puzzled, and then he began to move quickly. He was a mess. His hair was all scruffy, his shorts were dirty and he wasn't wearing a shirt. He began to run up the stairs to get changed when the doorbell rang. "How the...?"

He walked up to the door and opened it. Sean stood there with his cell phone in his hand. He was obviously just standing outside the house when he rang. "Hey," Sean said and walked in through the open door way.

"Hey...sorry I'm a bit of a mess. You didn't give me much time..." he broke off.

"That's fine." Sean said. He then noticed that Jesse was standing there half naked in a pair of long shorts that hung off his tight waist line. Sean quickly turned away, embarrassed.

"Do you, err, want anything?"

"No. No, I've just eaten. I just think that we really need to talk. I saw your mum pull away and thought that we could talk whilst we were alone. Is that ok?"

"Yeah. Sit down." He indicated to the sofa. Sean sat on it and Jess followed. He was about to sit next to Sean when he thought better of it and sat on the armchair instead.

Sean noticed this and said "This is stupid Jess. We haven't spoken in a week and we feel weird around each other. I mean, you weren't really ill were you. You just didn't wanna see me did you?"

"What? I was ill and-"

"Don't give me that bullshit! Come on Jess!" He was standing up now, pacing around the room. "What we did...we have to talk about it."

"Ok! Go ahead then!" Jess was on his feet too. There was a pause until: "FUCKING SAY SOMETHING!" Jesse yelled across the room.

The two just stared at each other. The tension between them was at an all time high. Then, all of a sudden Sean stepped forward, grabbed Jesse's head and pulled him into a deep, passionate kiss. Jesse grabbed a hold of Sean and pulled him in towards him.

At that moment, Harrison was walking up to the front door when he saw the two kissing through the window. He stared, and walked away in disgust and shock.
