Chapter 2

Insight and Rebellion

Hart awoke and opened his eyes. He was in a white room that was very bright. So bright in fact, that it hurt his eyes. Like being in darkness, and then someone switches on the lights. He was squinting and trying to get used to it, but it was like looking at the sun, and no amount of time would help him with the effort.

He should of been scared shitless right about now, but he noted that all he felt was peace and content. He noted that while he was laying on something comfy and soft, he felt almost weightless, like he was a disembodied spirit. And the realization came to him.

"Damn, I guess then, I really did die." He thought to himself with a twinge of happy regret.

"No, you're not dead Hart. But you are really close to it." said a slightly amused voice from behind him.

Hart sat up and turned to see who was doing the talking. There, right behind him, stood a man fully robed in white. A hood covering his face. The hooded man started stepping closer to Hart and sat down beside him and removed the hood showing his face.

Tears welled up in Hart's eyes as he saw who he was. From his brown and grey, short cut beard, to the short brown hair that parted to the left, and the hazel eyes that also looked damp. It could be no one but him, his father, James Hartley.

"Dad!" Hart choked out and reached for his father, pulling him into a tight hug. Wracking sobs escaped him as he held on to his father for dear life as the grief, pain and longing, washed over him. They sat there like that, sobbing in each others arms for what felt like forever, yet at the same time felt like it was only seconds. Time was not a tangible thing where he was right now.

"I've missed you so much Hart, you really have no idea." James said as they broke the embrace sometime later.

"I've missed you too dad." Hart said as he dried his eyes with his forearm. A question formed in his mind but before he could finish it...

"As I said, you are not dead, but you are very close to it. The Native Americans would call this a spirit journey, but we call it 'Limbo'. It's a place where you are neither dead nor alive. Kind of like a meeting ground for the dead and living to come to safely communicate." James explained, answering the unspoken question.

"But I don't understand... why am I here?" Hart asked confused.

"The spirits of newly turned werewolves must come here for protection." James said. Seeing the confused look on Harts face he continued. "Your body is no longer the one your spirit was meant for. Your body is going through a massive change, both physically and mentally. If you were to stay there, your spirit would make the changes with it and you would be lost forever, becoming feral. Only when the changes are done will you wake from this place, Limbo, and return to your body as a newly made werewolf."

"Then why are you here? Not that I'm not grateful to see you again, I'm just very confused." Hart asked, looking to his father for the answers. He felt his dad's hand on his head messing up his hair, and let out a giggle.

"Because I wanted to see you again!" His father said exasperated, sharing a laugh."And because I need to tell you the truth about who I was and how I died. And about you."

James face turned dreamy as he reminisced about his past life. "It was 1999, and I was 25 when I met your mother. I swear it was love at first sight. She was 22 at the time, just finished college, and was working at a small coffee shop back in Eau Clare, where she lived." A big smile was on is face as he continued. "My knees were shaking so bad when I went up to her to ask her for her number. She just looked at me with her big brown eyes, and said she could do me one better, and that I should meet her in an hour when she got off work." He looked at Hart and grabbed his hand as he continued.

"So I took her up on her offer and we went out on a date. It was my first time ever going out with someone and I fell in love with everything about it. From the movie we watched, to the long walk in the park, to just sitting up all night talking. But I think what I loved most of all, was the fact that it had been my first date, and I had fallen head over heels in love." James spoke with conviction. "We had many more dates. I even proposed to her six months later. I have never seen so much love in one person's eyes as she told me yes, that she would marry me. We married shortly after, and soon, she came to me, scared and worried, and told me she was pregnant." A tear fell from James' face as he went on. "I was so happy. I couldn't believe where my life was heading. Believe me when I tell you, I was scared shitless about becoming a father. But your mother made me feel like I could take on the world, if she was there, by my side."

"But..." Hart pressed sensing there was more to it then this.

"But I had a secret, that I could tell no one, even your mother, for it would endanger their lives." James said grimly, his face becoming hard. "I was a Mage."

"A what!?" Hart interjected, confused.

"A mage. Not unlike those that are in some of your video games you used to play. I was able to control the element of water, and bend it to my will." James said, looking at Hart pleading him with his eyes to believe him.

"I had a lot of promise too." James continued. "I was born from a powerful line of hydromancers, and was in training at the time, until I met your mother and fell in love. I had planned to take a small break after you were born to help raise you, then go back to my studies. But 'The Master' wouldn't hear of it. He was angry at me for marrying a human, said that I was diluting our blood line with that 'trash'." James' face went from anger to sadness as he went on.

"The Master told me I had to break it off or he would kill her himself. I never told him that she was pregnant with you, or he would of killed her as soon as he could. So I left, and ran away with your mother and you. We moved and hid to the small town of Glenwood City, in Wisconsin. She never knew what we were running from, but she said she didn't care, as long as she was with me. We loved each other very much, and then you were born, and the both of us loved you just as strongly. We named you Tobias after her grandfather. I liked the name, it was a strong one, But your mother always called you her 'Hart' because of your last name, and because you were always in hers, or so she said. So over the course of 15 years, I watched you grow from toddler, to boy, to young man. I couldn't of been more proud."

Tears began to form in James' eyes and he continued on, and Hart was worried where this was going.

"But the world came crashing down on me when The Master caught wind of my whereabouts, and came to me shortly after your 15th birthday. He intended to kill your mother, and then you, when he realized that you had mage powers. I pleaded with him to not kill you, because you showed promise as a mage yourself, but he said that you were tainted, and needed to be purged. So I did the only thing I could, I challenged him to a duel to the death. It was my last option.

Hart hugged his father who was started shaking with the strain of keeping back his emotions. This was so hard for his father, and he wanted to be a rock for his father to hold onto as he went on.

"He agreed, and told me to meet him at the nearby forest at midnight, and left. I had to move fast. I knew I would never beat him, I was strong, but he was far stronger. So I set a plan in motion in case he relented and let you live. I went into your room while you were sleeping, and sealed your powers so that you would never have access to them. I remember crying at my stupidity. If I had just done it when you were born, maybe we wouldn't of been in this mess. I kissed you on your forehead, told you I loved you, and that I would always watch over you."

Hart felt his father's arms wrap around him tightly as the emotional dam broke and wracking sobs took over one again. Tears formed in Hart's eyes as he realized the pain his father went through to protect him.

"When I went to your mother, she knew something was wrong." James continued between sobs. "I could never really hide much from her. It still boggles me that she never found out my being a mage. She asked me what was wrong. I lied, telling her it was stress, and that I needed to go out for a drive and clear my head. I kissed her, deeply, the last kiss I would ever get from her. My heart was breaking, I almost couldn't hold back the tears from her. I told her that I love her, and that I always would, and then left her there with that sad worried look on her face. I think she knew I wasn't coming back."

We held each other close, even now MY heart was breaking. Hart never knew his dad's death was like this. When the cops showed up at their doorstep that night they were told it was a car accident. He remembered how mom fell to her knees in agony and grief, and how he rushed to her and just held her, much like he was now with his father. He pushed the memories away and continued to listen.

"I cried all the way to the meeting spot. The Master met me there and we had our duel. I tried, God help me I tried Hart, with all my might, to beat him. But he out classed me. I never stood a chance. And as he stood over my dying body, I begged him to spare you two. I told him I sealed your powers, and the you and your mother never knew of the mages. He relented, finally, and told me that because my love for them was so strong that I would sacrifice myself, he would be unable to touch them. He said that it had to be this way because you, Hart, needed to be protected from something greater that was coming, and only the magic of love could save you until the time was right."

James' cried for a little while longer as they hugged each other. Finally after they had stopped crying, they broke the embrace and Hart allowed his father to finish.

"And so I died, and came here to Limbo. I met your grandfather, Tobias, and he explained things to me. Like how The Master didn't want to do this. and how he was ashamed at having to kill his own student who he felt was his own child. And I felt better knowing you two were safe. So I watched over you for the next 3 years, saw you become a man, and how lonely you were. It broke my heart to see you in such a state. But I was filled with joy when you finally made the choice to head out on your own and go to college."

"What happened next threw me for a loop though. I can't believe you hit a werewolf with your car!" James said in disbelief. "And then you actually got out to try and help the poor thing, only to be bitten and turned yourself."

Hart laughed as he said, "Yeah, I kinda felt bad for it, you know?" They sat in silence for a bit, enjoying each other's company, until Hart had a pressing question to ask.

"So... I'm a mage too huh? Can you still break the seal?"

James looked at Hart sadly as he spoke. "No son I can't, it's not there anymore. The moment Lance bit you, all of your humanity was lost. Remember the change that is going through your body right now? Well it's changing your powers as well into something I can't understand. I feel that it will be powerful, but it is not the power of a mage anymore. It's different. Tainted. And it's locked deep down in your psyche, waiting for you to unlock it.

"Oh." Was all Hart could say. He felt disappointed that he had lost something of his father, but a different question came up. "Who's Lance?'

"Lance is the werewolf Alpha that gave you the bite and turned you. He's a damn good Alpha too, I couldn't be more proud of him." James said beaming.

"No. Lance is the asshole who took everything away from me and my life." Hart spat bitterly.

"Look, I know it's hard to wrap your head around all of this. and you may have a really hard time with it at first. But I know you are strong enough to handle this. You need to be, now that you are a werewolf you NEED to have people to call friends or you are going to have a really hard time with it. Remember. A lone wolf is a dead wolf." His father said sternly.

Hart was about to protest, when all of a sudden he felt a massive tug, right behind his navel. It was painful, and Hart made an "Oof" sound.

James saw what was going on and said, sadly. "Ahh. your time here is all most up it seems."

"What? But I just got to see you again!" Hart broke out as another tug, more painful this time, hit him. It felt as though he was a fish who was caught with a hook, being reeled in.

"When it's your time, it's your time. Your body needs its spirit back and it will get you kicking and screaming. Don't fight it or you will just make it a very painful process." James said sadly.

"But will I ever see you again?" Hart asked as yet another tug gripped him, even more painfully then the last time.

"Of course you will! Just remember that I am always with you, and that I will ALWAYS watch over you. I love you. Please, never forget that." James said looking like he was holding back tears.

"I love you too dad, but..." There would be no more "Buts". A pain such that Hart has never felt before centered behind his navel, at the same time James stood up and put a finger to Hart's forehead. As Hart felt the next tug, James push him over with that one finger making him fall back. Hart at first thought he was going to land on his back on the soft something that was under him, but as the tug rattled through his body he felt himself being pulled down into a tunnel. The bright white light was getting dimmer, and he saw his father standing above him, getting farther and farther away.

"I love you dad!" Hart screamed at the top of his lungs and he fell faster and faster, away from the one man who truly loved him.

As he fell, tears were streaming from his eyes, He felt breathless and a roaring sound was filling his ears, getting louder and louder, making him deaf. The bright white light was getting dimmer and dimmer as he fell turning into an inky black. Before he felt the thud that was sure to come at some point, he felt the voice of his father, James, flicker into his mind. hopefully not for the last time, and all he said was...

"I love you too Hart. More then you will ever know."

Hart woke with a start, tears streaming down his cheeks. He sat up quickly, pangs of soreness making themselves known through-out his body. He tried to settle his pounding heart as he looked around, noting the dark wood floors and oak panels on the walls in the small room he was in. He was laying in a small bed, a patchwork quilt over him. To his left was a window, sunlight shining through, but he knew not what time it was. To his right a small bedside table with a lamp.

He remembered having a dream, and in it was his father. He tried to remember how he got here. He remembered saying goodbye to mom, the car ride. He hit something. A wolf!

All the events that had transpired came crashing down on Hart. He remembered everything, the attack, him getting bitten and beaten. The meeting with his father. He looked down at his bare chest. There was a scar there, faded, but was still visable. It was jagged, like his skin had be ripped open. he also noticed that his round tummy was flat. He had lost weight.

As he thought about the events that had happened, and with meeting his dad again, the dam on his heart burst and all of the grief that he held back for the past 3 years came flooding out at once. He turned into his pillow and sobbed. The pain from his grief was so much that it turned into physical pain. He turned on his side and put his knees to his chest. Every wracking, agonizing, soul crushing sob made him pull himself tighter into a ball. And the harder he pulled himself inward, the more he felt the strain of his sore muscles, which caused him to sob harder, knowing that it was all true.

He laid there in his grief attack for what must of been fifteen minutes. He noticed someone come into the room he was in, sit on his bed and pull him into a loving embrace, but the grief and pain was so much that he didn't care. He just let it all out into the big broad chest of the man that was holding him. And with every heart wrenching gasp he felt safe and protected in those huge arms.

Finally, the tears and grief let up and Hart, while feeling emotionally drained, just sat there in the man's arms. It was then that the mystery man spoke, in a deep baritone...

"Hart are you ok love?"

Hart after hearing this pulled away to get a good look at the man who was consoling him. He was shirtless but wearing a pair of faded blue denim jeans. There was a strange smell to him, something between pine, leather, musk, and sweat. He let his eyes travel up to his well chiseled abs. They were hairy and very muscled, he almost had an eight pack. He continued traveling up looking at his well defined arms, large and strong ,covered in the same black hair as his chest and abs. His pecs were also well defined coming to his thick neck and broad shoulders. Looking at his face he noted the short trimmed goatee of black hair that surrounded some very kissable, full lips. He looked at his nose, slanting downwards as an angle, perfect for his face. He saw his hair, short and spiked, black. He was tall, had to be over six feet tall, 6'6" he guessed, and he had to weigh at least 250 pounds. He looked to be in his mid 30's He felt very aroused around this very masculine man. Hart finally settled on his eyes to take in the color, as butterflies hit his stomach hard. They were gold, and glowing.

A flashback, gold eyes on the monster that attacked and almost killed him. Pain. A name came to mind. Lance... Alpha... the one who turned you...

The butterflies instantly turned into cannonballs and he felt like the bed had dropped out from under him. Bile rose up into his throat as the memories of what this monster had done to him raced across his mind yet again. There was an instant repulsion, like a spider that dropped onto your lap. You wanted to scream and jump getting it off of you. He wanted to run, but he also wanted to kill this fucker who did this too him.

Lance looked directly into Hart's eyes, and a frown came across his face as he said, concern filling his voice. "My love, is everything alright? Please tell me what you are thinking."

Hart jumped out of bed, barely noticing the pair of blue shorts that were covering him. A rage like never before swept across him. How DARE this bastard show concern for him. How DARE he console him from the grief that this monster was the cause of. How DARE he try to touch him.

"Don't fucking touch me!!" Hart screamed, as Lance made a move to reach for his hand.

A hurt look flashed across Lance's face after hearing this. Hart loved that he did that to him, he wanted to make the bastard suffer like he was.

"Please, maybe you should sit down so we can talk about this." Lance said full of concern.

There it was again, that stupid look of concern. This was about to end. Now.

"HOW DARE YOU!" Hart, screamed throwing as much hate as he could at the human looking monster before him.

"W-what?" Lance stuttered, taken aback.

"How fucking DARE you! You think that you can attack someone, beat them to an inch of their life, and then RAPE them!?" Hart screamed, throwing as much bile and venom into his words as he could. He wanted to kill this asshole. To rush over there and tear his friggen head off. The ONLY thing stopping him was that fact that this was A monster that could destroy him.

"I-I didn't rape you, I swear I..."

"Yes you did!" Hart screamed cutting Lance off. "You attacked me, and then you raped me of my humanity. You didn't give me a choice. And for that I hate you, I will ALWAYS hate you. You turned me into a monster, against my will." He was panting with the force of his words, he continued with as much power as he could. "You should of killed me, left me to die. I am not worth this. You should have killed me, because now, I. Will. Kill. You."

Lance's face darkened, he stood up, walked the four steps to where Hart was standing. He raised his hand never dropping the gaze of Hart's eyes, and then...

SMACK!

Hart was stunned, He had never before been slapped in his life. And yet here this monster just did it.

"What is it with your own death that has this hold on you!?" Lance screamed in anger.

Hart couldn't move,he was stopped in his tracks. He just held a hand to the cheek that had been slapped as tears once again streamed down his eyes. Shame washed over him, for allowing Lance to see him crying. For being weak.

Lance stood there looking at Hart's shocked expression, waiting for an answer. "Well?" He said sometime after.

Hart couldn't speak, he needed to get out of here. NOW. He turned and ran to the door opening it up attempting to escape.

"STOP AND COME BACK HERE" Lance screamed at Hart. But this was different then a normal scream, it was in his head. It reverberated in his brain. His entire being, his soul, wanted... no, NEEDED to obey him. Hart fought it, but it was so hard, so very, very, hard. Hard like trying to walk on water, or move a mountain. Hart stopped at the door while trying to fight him off. He turned around looking at the smug look on Lance's face.

"I am not a puppet that you can string along!" Hart screamed, his voice going hoarse. Anger and rage swelled within him yet again, braking the spell. He turned, walked out of the room and found his way out of the house that he was in. He heard windows being opened as he left. turning his head he saw 3 people sticking their heads out. One was a white man with sandy brown hair. One a girl, with light brown skin and curly dark brown hair. And finally there was Lance, rage plastered all over his face.

"GET YOUR ASS BACK IN THIS HOUSE AND SIT YOUR ASS DOWN SO I CAN TALK TO YOU!" Lance screamed at Hart through the window of the nicely made dark log cabin surrounded by forest. Hart felt the strings trying to reattach to his being, but his rage and anger melted them instantly. He turned his body, and with a sneer on his face, flipped lance a double middle finger.

"Fuck off Fido!" Hart screamed. He turned into the forest and ran.
