"Not what I thought escape meant" Chapter 39
Carl grumbled as the phone rang. He had jumped at it in the past hoping it was a call about Max but lately it seemed to be meaningless call. "Rexlan Ranch" Carl said. "Yes, May I speak to Carl Rexlan ?" the voice said. "Speaking. How can I help you ?" Carl asked. "My name is Fred Durk. I own Durk Ranch in Austin Texas. An old friend of mine told me to call you. She said that you were expanding your ranch and I thought you might be interested in a herd similar to mine." Durk said. "Who is this friend ?" Carl asked. "Well its our friend. Flo." Durk said. "Well Mr. Fred I am not sure why she had you call me. " Carl said. "Well first off my friends call me Durk. I haven't heard Fred in probably sixty years. If you can give me a couple of minutes I will explain why she called." Durk said. "No problem. Sorry if I sounded rude. Its just been a rough few months." Carl said. "Flo told me a little about your situation but the main thing is that you are expanding and want to maximize your earning potential." Durk said. "What type cattle do you have ?" Carl said. "I raise Waygu Japanese beef. I have one of the Japanese black breeds called Tajima." Durk said. "Yeah I have heard of the Waygu but that is a lot of cash lay out for a herd that will take some time to see the income." Carl said. "That's why I called you. I have a proposition for you." Durk said. "Wont hurt to listen." Carl said.
Durk was now in his early eighties. His children had no interest in the ranch only the money it afforded them. Durk had planned to expand himself to a new bloodline but after talking to Flo had thought most of the night and decided a change was in order. There would be plenty of cattle and land for his children to sell off once he died but this beef had been his passion for the last thirty years. Durk explained to Carl that his family held no interest and his wife had passed away about fifteen years ago. "I started out over thirty years ago borrowing the money for one bull and two breed stock cows. I have grown to a herd of over a thousand and to be honest have made millions. I contracted ten years ago to buy so many pure bred bulls from a breeder in Japan. My last bull will be here in about a month. I am too old to expand and really need to scale down. I would like for you to come out to Austin and look at my set up and talk to you about this bull." Durk said. "Well you have my interest but I don't know that I could afford the breeding herd and breeding him with my angus would not raise my dollar on the hoof high enough to buy such an expensive bull." Carl said. "Well if you like my set up what I would offer you is that if you buy the bull I will supply you with thirty breed stock. You get fifteen calves and I get fifteen each season. In three years I would like to swap bulls for a season to stop inbreeding. By then one of the offspring will be viable enough to take over." Durk said. "You would trust me with thirty of your breed stock ?" Carl asked. "Flo speaks highly of you and I trust her. I would also list in my will to give you more than a fair price on any stock you want to buy before they butcher my herd. I get triple the dollar on hoof for these than angus or any other breed." Durk said.
Carl sat for a minute and thought. He had the land over at the neighbors so he could insure the breeds didn't mix. He also had the option of Joe's land that he leased from him. "I need to think about this." Carl said. "How much is the bull ?" Carl asked. "It cost me including transport, port costs, and customs just over one hundred thousand dollars." Durk said. "Whew." Carl said. "A little too steep ?" Durk asked. "The money is not the problem and I have seen them go much higher. That's just a lot of money for something that may die two days later." Carl said. "The bulls are guaranteed for two years as long as their vet care is verified. That guarantees you two seasons per bull at least which more than covers his cost." Durk said. "Why me ?" Carl asked. "I feel you are a kindred spirit with the passion for ranching. Most just want a large bank account. This type beef can do both. Let you enjoy your passion while bursting your bank account's seams." Durk said. "How soon do you need to know ?" Carl said. "I would really like you to be here in a couple of days if you are interested. You can watch the splitting of the herd and pick your thirty then. We can corral them separate until you are ready." Durk said. "Well let me see what I can do. Its slow here but that's kind of short notice." Carl said. "Well you have my number. I am not trying to rush you but I got a call from another breeder that said he was coming to see me the first of next week. I don't like him but I know he is coming to make an offer on my bull that's headed this way." Durk said. "I need a break and Austin may be good. Let me get a flight and I will be there either tomorrow or the next day." Carl said. "Look forward to meeting you. Let me know when you get your flight information." Durk said.
Daryl and Joe were working on the neighbors house. Carl went over and told them and the farmer about the offer from the Texas rancher that was a friend of Flo's. "Well I'll be. Sounds like I may be guarding cows on this land worth more than the land. " the farmer laughed. "When is your flight ?" Daryl asked. "I haven't decided I was going." Carl said. "Little brother I always thought you were the smart one of the bunch now go buy your ticket. I will take care of the ranch for a few days." Joe said. "I guess it wont hurt to go and look anyway.:" Carl said. "Hell give me your check book. I will tell him that I am Carl Rexlan." Daryl laughed. "Alright guys. If you don't mind watching the ranch for a few days one more time I guess I will go and make arrangements. I may even drive." Carl said. "Drive hell. Let the pilot do the driving." Joe said. Daryl and Joe watched as Carl left the house headed back to make his arrangements. "Hmmm. I wonder what the hell Flo is up to. " Daryl thought.
"Flo's diner." Flo said. "Hey old girl. This is Durk. I talked to your friend Carl and I think he will be headed here tomorrow. I trust you and your gut feelings so I trust him. I am an old man now so I made him an offer that was hard for him to refuse." Durk said. "You are the best Durk but I don't want this to cost you anything. " Flo said. "Flo money is nothing to me and I don't have a lot of years to spend all I have. You said you wanted me to figure out how to get him here that he couldn't refuse so that's what I did. Plus I haven't met him but I think you may have found an answer to some of my prayers too. He seems to be passionate about ranching." Durk said. "None more dedicated." Flo said. "Well I will let you know how things go. I will get him out to the ranch and then take him out to eat. I know the place his partner works at oh too well. They buy their beef from me." Durk said. "I owe you big time Durk." Flo said. "Darlin' if he is as passionate about ranching as he seems to be then we are even." Durk said.
Flo hung up the phone and called Darren. "How are things going honey ? " Flo asked. "Aunt Flo I hope you can hurry things along." Darren said. "You tired of this case already ?" Flo asked. "Its not that. I have followed Mr. Max for five miles so far. He has a couple more to go and he has had to stop three times and set down. He still has a full shift to work and then seven miles home. I would offer to help but I am afraid he might get tipped off and run again." Darren said. "Hold on Darren and step in if you absolutely have to but the calvary is on the way. Carl will be there tomorrow and eat there tomorrow night." Flo said. "How did you do that ?" Darren said. "Your old Aunt Flo has friends all over the world and most of them owe her a favor. Don't you worry about how I did it. Just know I got it done." Flo laughed.
Darren ate again at the same restaurant. Once again he tried to engage Max in conversation. Even though Darren was not seated in that one waitresses section she neglected her tables trying to watch Max. Her father felt that Max was the best employee he had ever had and she knew that Max had seen her removing food and alcohol for her friends. She wanted him gone. Max was careful to try to stay away from Darren but having to clean the tables around him made staying totally clear impossible. "Hey Max. How are you tonight ?" Darren asked. "Very well sir and you ?" Max said not stopping to chat. Darren turned in his seat so that he could speak to Max. Max saw out of the corner of his eye that the waitress was watching him. "I know he can't be hitting on me but he is going to get me fired." Max thought. As Darren finished his meal he headed for the door. "You have been a great help my friend." Darren said and handed Max a twenty dollar bill. As Max entered the kitchen door Darren could hear shouting. Looking through the kitchen door he saw the waitress screaming at Max in the corner. She had a serving tray and Max lifted his arm as she hit him with it demanding he turn over the money. "You don't get tips you old bastard now give me my money. " she shouted. Max handed her the twenty dollar bill still folded in his hand. "No I mean everything. Empty your fucking pockets. There is no telling how much money you have taken from me already." she shouted. The other servers stood amazed a the way she acted. They all loved Max and had never had an issue. Max pulled out the six dollars and eighty five cent he had and she greedily grabbed it. "Know this you old fool. I may have the cook strip search you tonight to make sure you haven't taken anymore." she said as she shoved the money in her pocket and walked off.
Darren followed Max on his seven mile trek home. Not knowing that it was a different trail of tears he got ahead of Max and found a remote area that Max would walk through. Getting out quickly and placing another twenty dollar bill on the ground and pulling a little dirt over it Darren got back in his car and moved to a vantage point that he could watch. As he saw Max approach he saw him slow his already slow pace. Max looked down at the money and looked around to see if anyone was close. Max sat down on the side of the road behind the money and just looked at it. "I know dear Lord that you said you would provide but I am afraid that this was dropped by someone that needs it even more than me." Max whispered. After about thirty minutes Darren was almost getting impatient. "Pick it up already." Darren thought. "Thank you Lord. I promise to put this to good use." Max said as he picked up the bill and stood to his feet to walk his last half mile home.
The next morning Darren took his normal post. Max was two hours late leaving. Darren was beginning to worry but did not know that Max's hours had been cut. "Alright. Take the bus." Darren whispered. Not knowing that Max had hidden his money at home so as not to get it taken too he began his seven mile walk to work.
Carl was a little anxious as he stepped off the plane. "This is going to be a major business move. I wish Max was here." he thought. As he walked to the luggage area there was a man standing with a sign that said "Rexlan Ranch". "I'm Carl Rexlan." Carl said with surprise. "Nice to meet you Mr. Rexlan. Mr. Durk sent me here to pick you up." the man said. "Well I was going to rent a car or truck." Carl said. "No need sir. You will be driving one of the ranch vehicles during your visit." the man said. "Can you recommend a good motel ?" Carl asked. "Sir you already have a reservation at The Ella as a gust of Mr. Durks. He owns the Hotel." the man said.
"Alright. What's up Flo ?" Mary asked. "What do you mean ?" Flo laughed. Daryl, Mary and Joe sat at the counter at Flo's. "Your friend calling Carl and getting him to go to Austin. What are you up to ?" Daryl said. "Little old me ?" Flo said. "Don't try that shit with us. We know you too well Flo." Joe said. "I know you sent Darren to Austin so spill the beans." Mary said. "Well Carl will be eating dinner where Max is working tonight. But he has no clue." Flo smiled. "You sneaky old bitch." Daryl laughed. "Well I didn't want Carl to know this. He is going out first to work on a deal which will make him even richer. I didn't plan that part it just worked out. But he will be eating where Max is working." Flo said. Mary jumped and grabbed Flo around the neck with a tight hug. "Why didn't you tell us ?" Mary said. "Because I knew you would tell Carl and he would break his neck to get there. Thing is we need to be prepared. From the way Darren talks its really bad." Flo said. "Is Max sick?" Joe asked. "No but Darren has eaten there a couple of times and he says they are real abusive to Max. Plus Max has been walking about seven miles to work and seven miles home every night." Flo said. "Shit." Daryl whispered. "Darren had a picture of him. He told me that from the Christmas picture that he would guess that Max has lost at least thirty pounds." Flo said. "That's insane." Joe said. "Well don't you dare call Carl. Darren is watching over Max and Carl will see him tonight. From what I understand we will have to be very patient with Max when Carl gets him home." Flo said. "If life has been that bad and from what he dealt with to make him go there I can only imagine." Daryl said.
"Mr. Rexlan we will check you into your Hotel first and let you freshen up if you require it before heading to the ranch." the driver said as he turned off the main street. Little did Carl know that if they had continued to the ranch that at the next red light he would have been face to face with Max waiting on the light to turn to cross the street. "The flight was short so I will just check in and get my key and we can be on our way." Carl said. A porter took Carl's luggage and promised to place it in his room. Carl was back in the limousine within five minutes. Max walked in the backdoor of the restaurant just as the limousine passed out front. "Mr. Durk has made reservations for the two of you at that restaurant for this evening." the driver said. "Good. That will be easy to find." Carl said.
Carl was amazed at the operation that Durk had at his ranch. Durk even showed Carl financial records to prove how profitable the business was. Carl ended up sorting thirty of the breeding herd and Durk picked an additional ten for good measure. "Why are you doing this for me ?" Carl asked as they sat beside the pool drinking tea. "I lost my wife a few years back. That's why I built the Hotel and named it after her. She was my passion. My second passion was Wagyu beef. My children could care less about the cattle. All they want is money. I see a passion in your for ranching that I have not seen in many years. You remind me of myself. I know that financially it seems crazy because I could get so much more from what you are being offered but with you I have the feeling that my passion will live on and not die with me." Durk said. "But this is a financial loss for you." Carl said. "Money is not everything son. They print more every day. Besides my wife and I started out in major debt thirty years ago and now I am worth in access of two hundred million. I don't need it." Durk said. "Every day huh ?" Carl said as a tear formed in his eye. "Did I say something wrong ?" Durk asked. "No sir. The person I love more than life itself use to tell me they print money every day. I miss him so much." Carl said and then froze. "That's alright son. I figured you were gay. I have lived long enough to know that don't matter. You love who you love and as long as they love you back God smiles on it." Durk said. "Well I don't think God has smiled on us for a while." Carl said. "Oh I am sure he will and very soon." Durk said. "You sound like Flo." Carl laughed. "Great minds think alike My wife use to tell me that they printed more money every day when I would stress. Sounds like he is a super fella." Durk said.
Mary and Joe's new found lady friend busied themselves cleaning Carl and Max's house from top to bottom. "Lord have mercy. Max would have had a stroke if he came in and saw this house looking like this." Mary said as the two put fresh sheets on the master bed. "Joe says that this Max guy is a very special man." the girlfriend said. "You will meet him soon enough and I am sure that you will see what all the fuss is about." Mary said. "I hope Carl finds him. " she said. "Oh don't worry. Flo never misses and she has it all worked out." Mary said.
Carl lay naked on his hotel room bed. He had gotten his shower and looked at his watch to see how long before he had before he had to dress to meet Mr. Durk. The bell hops and room service boys had been quite funny trying to do all they could to get a glimpse of the God of cowboys staying in one of the suits. One had even had him answer the door with just a towel around his waist. Carl could only laugh to himself wondering if the poor boy could get the elevator door shut after his dick became full mass in only seconds. Even the cleaning ladies had stayed later and tapped on the door hoping that Carl needed fresh towels or something from their cart. "Max baby I wish you were here with me." Carl thought as he looked at some of the cattle articles that Durk had given him.
Arriving at the restaurant the hostess was offered tips from all the waiters and waitresses to seat Carl at one of their tables. "Follow me sir. We have Mr. Durk's favorite table ready and reserved." she said. Usually Mr. Durk liked to set facing the room so the hostess seated Carl with his back to most of the restaurant. Darren had followed but had to wait requesting he be seated in the same dining room. Max made his way around cleaning the tables. With Carl's back to him he never noticed the man setting with his back towards him. Max had learned to keep his head down and not look at the customers anyway. Just a smile of acknowledgement seemed to get him screamed at. The waitress in question was in rare form since she was not assigned the hot cowboy. Max had tried his best to stay clear of her for the most part. Carl looked at his watch and knew that he was a few minutes early so he was not concerned. Looking out the window he watched the traffic pass by and saw the limousine pull up out front. As he looked out the window he saw a reflection in the glass. There behind him cleaning a table was Max.
Carl spun around in his seat. "MAX" he shouted. Max looked up quickly and his eyes went wide open. The waitress was walking by and pushed him. "What did I tell you about talking to the customers. Get to work bitch." she whispered. Max grabbed his chest tightly and began sinking to the floor. He accidentally pushed the waitress on his way down. "You stupid, stupid old man. You are fired I don't give a damn what my father says. " she shouted as she began to hit Max's limp body with her serving tray and kicking him. Carl got to Max. "CALL AN AMBULANCE." he shouted. "I hope the old bastard dies." the waitress said and swung at Max again. Carl caught her with a single hand in her chest and lifted her off the floor. She landed on her back on top of the table that Max was to clean next.
Getting back to her feet she lunged at Max again just to be caught by a middle aged lady at the table between them. In the girls rage she slapped the customer who in turn punched her in the face. The manager had ran in hearing the commotion. Customers were getting up from their tables and leaving. "Its alright everyone. He just fainted. We will take him out back so he can recover. "Throw his ass in the dumpster." the waitress screamed. "We are not leaving because he is sick. We are leaving because of her and I promise we will not be back." the lady that hit her said. "Us too." came the reply from other patrons getting up to leave. "As long as she is here we wont be back." one man said. "What is the problem here ?" a deep voice came from behind them. "Oh Mr.Durk I am so sorry. We will have everything under control in just a minute. We just had an employee pass out. "Eeeeerrrrr." the waitress growled moving towards Max again. "I swear to God bitch if you touch him one more time I will buy this place tomorrow and shut if down." Carl said pointing his finger at her. Placing he hand on her hip. "This belongs to my daddy. You can't shut it down." she barked. "He may not be able to but I can." Durk said. The manager was freaking out. Durk turned to the manager. "If one more steak comes out of that kitchen as long as she is in here with my brand on it you will never serve another Durk steak." Durk said. "But sir. I can't fire her. I am only the manager." he said. "Get the owner on the phone then. NOW." Durk said
The ambulance had pulled up outside and the Paramedics had put Max on the gurney. "I am coming with you." Carl said. "Sir you can't ride with us." one paramedic said. "If you try to stop me they will need a stretcher for you too." Carl said. Durk was on the phone with the owner and his only excuse was that his daughter could be a little hot tempered. Durk hung the phone up while the man was still talking. As the ambulance pulled away Durk walked into the different dinning rooms.
"For those of you who don't know me my name is Durk. I own Double Durk ranch. If you are here for Double Durk beef I apologize because as of this moment this establishment no longer serves Durk beef." he said . The manager pleaded with him at the front door as the table emptied and only left two table in the entire place seated. "Good Luck." Durk said as he walked to the open door of his limo. "To the hospital." he said as the driver shut the door. As the driver started the limo Durk pulled out his cell phone. "Yes sir Mr. Durk." the voice said. Durk explained what had happened and told the man that he wanted a crew of ranch hands there within the hour to tear the Double Durk ranch logo off the sign and the building cleared of any and all Double Durk meat. Mr. Durk had learned the hard way years ago. He loaned his logo to certain establishments and sold the meat on consignment. He still owned the meat until it was served.
Arriving at the hospital it was almost a pushing contest. The paramedics and nurses tried to free Carl's hand from Max's but he had more strength than any of them. A young male nurse came in and took Carl's other hand. "Sir. Please allow us full access. I promise we will do everything we can and we will keep you informed." the nurse said. Looking into the young man's eyes Carl felt like it was Ty talking to him. Though the nurse did not look like Ty his eyes did. "You promise ?" Carl whispered with a shaky voice. "I promise sir. It is apparent that this is a very special man and I promise you we will treat him that way." the nurse said as Carl slowly let Max's hand go. As he stepped out from behind the curtain he was met by both Durk and Darren. Carl was not alarmed because something about Darren looked very familiar. Darren introduced himself and Carl remembered him from his visits to Flo.
Back in the waiting area Carl sat and watched the curtain as Darren explained how he had found Max and what he had observed. Carl had tears in his eyes as he heard the story of the abuse and also physical torment that Max had been through. "Why would he live through that Mr. Rexlan ?" Darren asked. "You would have to understand that man in there. He is the strongest human being I have ever met. He had to be. He has been beat down almost every minute of his life. Everyone breaks at some point and he reached his." Carl said. "He had to be strong to walk fourteen miles a day round trip to take their abuse." Darren said. "What do you mean walk ?" Carl said. "He walked every day. He passed dozens of bus stops but he walked to and from work." Darren said. "He didn't have a closer apartment ?" Carl asked. Darren explained the camper that Max lived in that once spent its life many years ago in the back of a pickup. "And he has a brand new sixty thousand dollar SUV in the carport at home." Carl said. Durk placed his hand on Carl's shoulder. "If he is a strong as you say then he will be just fine." Durk whispered.
The doctor came out to meet the men. "Is he alright ?" Carl said jumping to his feet. "It seems that his chest pain was an anxiety attack. We have ruled out heart attack though he is very close to one of those and a full body organ shut down." the doctor said. " What's wrong with him ?" Darren asked. "He is severely both dehydrated and malnourished. We are trying to determine now why his calves, ankles and feet are so swollen." the doctor said. "Well he walks fourteen miles a day and is on his feet all day at work." Darren said. "That may explain it then. It sounds like stress fractures from the malnutrition. I will send him up to xray. If that's the case I don't see how he was even able to walk because of the intense pain." the doctor said. All Carl heard was intense pain and caused him to break down. After a couple of minutes Carl was able to gain his composure. "When can I see him ?" Carl asked. "Go get some rest. We have him sedated and are pumping fluids and nutrition supplements into him. We will wake him up sometime after lunch tomorrow." the doctor said. "I am not leaving." Carl said. "It will be a couple of hours before we have him in a room. You need to talk to the nurse about what room he will be assigned." the doctor said. "That's already handled." Durk said. "As you wish Mr. Durk." the doctor said as he turned to walk off.
Darren had called Flo to tell her that Carl had found Max and the severity of his condition. He also informed her that he was in the hospital but they would not know anymore until tomorrow. Flo opted to not call Mary and Joe and let Carl do that himself. The deputy was pleased that he received two kisses from this news. "We need to find more missing people." the deputy said with a smile. "Don't be gettin' fresh now you." Flo said smiling at the deputy.
Both Darren and Durk tried to get Carl to go to the Hotel and get some rest. Since it would be a couple of hours Carl did agree to go with Darren to see where Max had lived and to get his things. "I will go as long as you assure me that he can't leave here before I get back." Carl said. "Don't worry son. The doctor said they would keep him asleep until tomorrow and before I leave here I will make him sign that in blood." Durk said.
Darren first showed Carl the route that Max walked to and from work. Pulling into the trailer park Carl gasp at the condition of the housing. As they pulled up to the camper he was angered more that Max had been living in the worst of them. Carl opened the door and ducted as he went up the steps. Not surprised but the camper was probably the cleanest place in a three mile radius. Max's clothes were still in the suitcase which was open in the corner. Carl looked on the counter at a piece of paper. Max had listed every day how much money he had and what bills he had due and when. "So he only had twenty dollars ?" Carl asked. "I placed that on the street for him to find last night. I gave him a tip after I got through eating last night and that waitress screamed at him in the kitchen and told him that was her money. She made him empty his pockets and give her all his money." Darren said. "I guess that's why he marked through this eight dollars." Carl said.
Opening the pantry door Carl found a half eaten pack of saltine crackers and a can of green beans. There was nothing else there. Opening the small refrigerator he found an old gatorade bottle with water in it. There was nothing else there or in the freezer section. Tears flowed quicker than he could catch them. "Do you know that Max is an amazing cook ?" Carl said as he looked around. "He has had to live through hell." Darren said. "Too much hell for too many years but I swear as God as my witness he will never be hurt again. That person will die at my hands before I allow that to happen." Carl said. "Aunt Flo said that he was a special man. I see now why." Darren said. "I want you to send me a bill to the ranch for your services." Carl said. "No need. This was between me and Aunt Flo." Darren said. "No. That man laying in that bed is worth over four million dollars. Send me the fucking bill. I will deal with Flo if need be." Carl said as he continued to look around. "What do you want to do now ?" Darren asked. "Get all his things from in here and strike a match to it." Carl said. "Will you settle for just getting all his stuff ?" Darren asked.
Back in the hospital room Carl sat and held Max's hand. Taking his phone out he called Mary and Daryl first to tell them what was going on. Mary cried as she heard what Carl had been told of Max's life. Carl's voice was shaky and Mary and Joe offered to come to Austin. "No guys. I am hoping that he will be released either tomorrow or the next day and I will not leave his side until I get him home. If he has to pee I am holding his dick for him. He is not getting out of my sight." Carl said. "Have you told Brian ?" Daryl asked. "Not yet I called you guys first but I am giving him fair warning. One word out of line to his Uncle ever again and his sons will be fatherless." Carl said. "You do what you have to little brother. Brian is a grown man now." Joe said.
Brian was the next call. He broke down and cried when Carl told him that he had found Max. "We are headed to Austin." Brian said. "No you are not. Your Uncle has lost probably forty pounds. He is going to have a slow road both physically and mentally. You are moving in a few weeks. You need to give him that much time to start healing. " Carl said. "I guess you are right. Me and the twins will be a little too much right now. Especially me." Brian said. "No buddy. Your Uncle Max will forgive and forget with no problem. I do promise you this though. One word out of line to Max from now on and I promise you that those sweet little boys will grow up fatherless." Carl said. "I understand Uncle Carl." Brian said. "I don't think you do. Understand me now. You will NEVER talk to him like that again. You got me ?" Carl said. "Yes sir." Brian said. "Now kiss my little nephews for me and get some sleep. Oh by the way I haven't called Ty. I am leaving you that call." Carl said. "Thank you Uncle Carl. I love you. Please kiss Uncle Max for me." Brian said through his tears. "I will buddy. We love you guys too." Carl said.
