Lying in bed, tonight was just like every other night. He slowly drifted in and out of idle thoughts. A cold breeze seeped in through the windows, brushing against his bare skin. It crept up along his spine and made him shudder. The days of summer has passed and autumn was setting in. Another school year was already a week in. And while he had been up since the break of dawn, he couldn't sleep. Something was on his mind. And so he drifted, waiting until sleep would take him ...

The following story will be told through two people. The changes will be indicated at the top.

Chapter One - The Beginning

*** NOAH ***

"Oh crap." It's 10:14. I was late - again. This whole week I've been waking up late. Completely ignoring my alarm - turning it off and then going right back to sleep. I don't know why I'm so sleepy. Then again I wasn't getting much sleep at night either. But my class started at 10 and here I was - still in bed. Okay, get up.

Without thinking much I grab whatever articles of clothing I can find and put them on. I know I should pay more attention to what I wear or how I look - but I don't. I just can't bother. I look in the mirror before I head out - my hair's a mess, half of it spiked up - usually I keep it that way anyways. I have a little bit of stubble growing - gives me a bit of an edge (or at least I think so). And my eyes have bags under them. At least they're green and stand out. Contacts of course.

Getting to school doesn't take very long - I live in an apartment not too far off campus. If I enter in quietly enough most likely my professor won't realise it. My classes aren't as big anymore now that I am in third year - most of the ... excuse my language ... dumber kids have been weeded out by now. I take a seat at the back and take out my notebook. History of Espionage. It's a really interesting course about spies in the cold war. I'm studying history as my major.

Midway through the class I find I'm falling asleep. It doesn't help the prof has turned down the lights and is showing a power point. If only I had my pillow with me right about now ... no, can't sleep. I know staring at the clock won't make it go any faster - but still one can only try. At last it's 12 and the professor has mercy on our ears and sends us off. I gather my things and am the first one out of the door.

"Hey, Noah what has you in such a hurry?"

I turn around and of course it's Jennifer - I just call her Jenn for short. We've known each other since first year and been friends ever since. Of course I embarrassed myself the first time we met. It was my first class ever at university and the buildings are so confusing. Okay - maybe it's just me but the room numbers don't go in chronological order. Room 200 ... 201 ... 210 ... 203 ... anyone would get lost in that scheme. So I finally give up and ask this girl if she knows where 202 is. And she replies - I'm not sure, but it might be the room right in front of you with the big sign reading 202. It was Jenn - she's a bit sarcastic just like me. We in fact had the same class together and since then have been friends.

"I'm not off anywhere in a hurry. I'm just so sleepy these days. I want to go home and take a nap." I replied.

"What, are you 80 years old, you need a nap in the day? The semester just began - we haven't even gotten any essays or midterms yet - so why are you so sleepy already?"

Yes she was a bit noisy - but in a good way. "I don't know, not sleeping really well these last few days, that's all."

"Well whatever's buggin ya, you can always tell me, you know that."

"You know I would - but even I don't know what's bugging me myself. I don't know I'll be fine in a few days - and besides, as you quite horribly point out, it's going to get busy soon, so won't have time to worry about anything."

"Okay - but for now I have a two hour break between classes so you wanna grab some lunch?" That wasn't a question really but more of a statement. She grabbed my arm and off we went to find something to eat.

"I swear these guys are always late." I wasn't talking to anyone - just thinking aloud in my head. I was waiting here for about 45 minutes now - for my stupid, late friends. I cut my workout short in the morning just to meet them on time. I usually go in the mornings when I have a lot of energy. I'm no bodybuilder - but do have a toned body.

While I'm waiting I call my girlfriend, see how she's doing. "Hey, Kate, where are you? Okay, yeah I know we're meeting tonight. That's fine I didn't mean to bug ... you ... okay, bye to you too."

That was weird. She was really short with me. Our relationship wasn't going too great to be honest. We'd been dating ever since first year and we were both now in our second year. Before the summer break everything was going great - I was even thinking of asking her to move in at the start of the new year. She ended up going home - and so did I; my dad's health isn't really good. And over the summer things started to change. I didn't ask her to move in - and I'm kind of glad. Ever since we've been back at school, there's been this distance between us. I don't know why; not sure if I did anything, but I like her and want this to work out. And here come those two lazy butts.

"About time, I've been here for about 30 minutes now - where were you two?"

My friends John and Elijah, but we call him Eli. I've known both of them since last year. They're both taking political sciences, but I'm in life sciences. Hoping to go to med school once I'm done my undergrad.

"Sorry man," John started, "but we just lost track of time."

"We need to talk to you about something Jordan." Eli added.

"Well guys it will have to wait now - I'm going to be late for English class. I'll meet up with you guys later."

With that I was off.

*** NOAH ***

Lunch with Jenn went great - she always knows how to take my mind of worldly affairs and make me laugh. And I know what you're thinking - no nothing like that has ever happened between us. I haven't dated anyone since second year. My last girlfriend, Stacey, broke things off pretty quickly. Since then, I don't know why but I just haven't found the right person to be with - and I don't want to mess things up with Jenn.

I slowly start to walk across campus to get to my next class. The weather has started to change now. As the leaves change colour, the reality of summer's end settles in. I look around and the campus is full of life - so many people walking around laughing. Groups of guys dressed in their finest trying to impress girls walking by, groups of girls ignoring them and walking off in their own world - and in the middle sitting on the grass couples acting all in love. Even with this much joy in the air, I don't know why I feel so alone ...

"Alright so last week I told you all about the books I've assigned. I hope you all got at least the first book by now." I was taking an English lit class as an elective and the prof was talking already about an assignment. "Each week we will have group presentations on the book we are reading. What I want you all to do is pick a theme and run it by me. It can be anything - but be sure to run it by me because there will be other groups reading the same book. So I want all of you to get into groups of 2 and then sign up on this paper. I will then randomly assign each group a book. So get to it."

Ah, group work. I didn't know anyone in this class because it was an elective. It's not a big class only 30 or so people in it. But I always manage to get stuck with someone who doesn't want to do any work and then I end up doing everything. Shoot, I should find someone ... most people are already starting to sign their names on the paper. I'm the only one really just sitting here ... I don't want to get stuck with zit face over there. Okay fine, I know he could be smart but oh look at that acne on his ...

"Hey, dude, wanna be partners?"

I didn't even realise someone was standing over me - I was starring at that guys nasty zit on his nose. Okay I know its nasty but still you should have seen it - it looked like it would pop any second now.

"Yeah, that's fine." The guy looked decent - and he had no acne so that was a plus (whatever even you wouldn't want to be with zit face). But he looked like the typical jock, which meant there was a risk I would have to do all of the work myself.

"Okay, I'll sign up our name on the sheet."

"Okay, thanks."

He just stood there for a second looking at me. What? He said he was going to go sign up, didn't he.

"And I need your name, dude."

Well, that would make sense. "Oh, sorry, it's Noah."

"Cool, I'm Jordan."

*** JORDAN ***

Man, group assignments suck. Let's see who should I pick - I don't even know anyone here yet. Oh god that guy with a nasty zit is looking at me. I should get up before he comes over here. Hmmm, that guy has bought all of the books already ... seems like a nerd ... and he has no big zits. Might as well go for it.

"Hey, dude, wanna be partners?"

I seemed to have shocked the guy - he was so intently staring at zit face over there.

"Yeah, that's fine." He replies.

"Okay, I'll sign up our names on the sheet."

"Okay, thanks."

Wow this guy is either slow or this was a bad idea. Any second now he will tell me his name. Okay ... maybe he won't.

"And I need your name, dude."

"Oh, sorry, it's Noah."

"Cool, I'm Jordan."

I walk down to the front of the class and sign our names up. I took my seat across the room and as the class went on I look up every so often to the guy I would be working with. He was listening to every word the professor was saying - writing down notes intensely. I think I've made a good choice - he is a nerd. Easy A.

"Alright everyone, I have assigned everyone their book and presentation dates. Take a look and if you have any questions lets me know. Otherwise I will see you all on Friday for class."

After the large crowd of people craning their necks to see the sheet had dispersed I walked up to it. By now the class was almost empty - except for my new group member. "Well it looks like Mrs. Dalloway in mid-October." I said to him.

"Virginia Woolf, not bad."

"Are you afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

"You know the play?"

He seems surprised - yes I know the play. "Yeah I know the play. I've heard about it but I've never actually seen it. Well see you on Friday."
