Part 6: Behind Closed Doors
The sun shone down through the hospital window and right onto my face. For a moment I was disoriented.
"Huh?" I asked myself as I shifted in the hospital bed.
"Steve," Lance whispered.
"Lance," I replied, the events of the past day returning to my head. "You mean that wasn't a dream?" I asked.
"No, and if it was a dream, I don't ever want to wake up," Lance said as he drew me into his strong arms and kissed me on my forehead. When he released me from his embrace, a knock was heard from the door.
"Let me get that," Lance said as he jumped out of bed and went to the door.
"Good morning Lance," Dr. Shitake said, "I take it our patient slept well last night."
Lance blushed a little as he said, "Oh, he slept well John. So, are you gonna release him today?"
"Well, I just need to give him a little check up and we'll see."
"Good," Lance said.
"Good morning Steve," the doctor said, "and how are you feeling today?"
"I'm feeling great, John," Steve said.
"I just need to look at a few things, and we'll see about releasing you, sound good?" Dr. Shitake said.
"Ok!" I excitedly replied.
After giving me a small check up, taking my blood pressure, and a few other things, Dr. Shitake gave me the ok to check out of the hospital, with the stipulation that I would take it easy for a few days.
Lance took my hand as we walked out the automatic sliding doors of Wilcox Memorial Hospital and into the bright sunlight of a new day. I was a little surprised by his gesture, but was happy. My hand seemed to fit perfectly in his, kind of like they were meant to be that way.
We walked to my Jeep, which Lance had driven me to the hospital in, and I was about to enter the driver's seat, but Lance stopped me.
"What do you think you're doing?" he asked.
"I'm getting into the Jeep." I replied.
"Yeah, but I'm driving. You heard what the doctor said, take it easy, so, let me drive," he said, with a little concern showing in his deep voice.
"But I can drive, it isn't that taxing, I mean, it's not like driving in Orlando or anything," I retorted.
Lance looked into my eyes, and broke out the big guns: the sad puppy dog face. My heart melted as I looked into those deep, green eyes. They were eyes that could take you to a whole different world, eyes that one could get lost in. And, I had to give in.
Lance took the keys from my hand, and jumped in the driver's seat, while I went around the Jeep and got into the passenger's seat.
"Where to?" he asked.
"Well, I better go home. I haven't been there in a day, and some of my friends are probably worried about me."
"Ok," he replied, "Just tell me where to go." And with that, Lance started up the Jeep and took me home.
Meanwhile, back at the hotel...
Four friends sat around a table in silence. Joey, JC, Justin, and Chris just sat there looking at each other or at nothing in particular.
Chris was the first to break the silence. "What's wrong with our Scoop?" he asked.
"I don't know," Joey replied.
"Me neither," JC said.
"I mean, he's been so distant lately, and then he runs off here to this island, and when we get here, we find that he's waiting at a hospital for some guy he just met... Does this sound strange to anyone, or am I just being silly?" Chris asked.
"Think about it Chris," Justin said, "Was he being distant, or was it us that was pushing him away? Lately, all I have been doing is hanging out with JC, not even including any of you guys..."
Chris interrupted, "And me and Joey have been hanging around each other. Come to think of it, the only time I've talked to
Scoop lately is when I want to find out when I need to be somewhere, or when we have those morning meetings."
"But we are always hanging out together and stuff, I mean all of us," JC interjected.
"We are together when we do shows, are on the bus, and things like that Josh," Justin said, "but when was the last time you spent some quality time with him. Just you and him alone?"
"Well..." JC thought for a while, "You know, I haven't spent that kind of time with Scoop in a long time."
"Exactly," Justin replied.
"But what about this Steve guy, the guy Scoop was waiting for at the hospital? Where does he fit into all of this?" JC asked.
"Well, maybe he was feeling left out and unappreciated. Maybe Steve showed him some attention," Justin said.
"We get attention from all our fans all the time," Joey replied.
"Yes Joey, but not that kind of attention..." Chris said.
"Gosh, you don't think that he and Scoop are..." JC said.
"I don't know Joey, but what I do know is that we need to get our Scoop back," Justin said.
At my house...
Lance pulled into my driveway ten minutes later. The front yard was decorated with a Japanese rock garden and a few orchids. The tops of the mango and banana trees in the back yard could be seen from the front of the house.
The house was done in the style of the old sugar cane plantation homes. White paint peeled from age and the trim around the house only had traces of the blue that it once was. Lance and I walked up the stairs and onto the front porch.
"This place looks comfy," Lance said.
"It is," I replied as I opened the screen door and unlocked the interior door, "It may be old and a little run down, but I think that it adds to the charm of the place.
"Welcome to my home," I said.
Lance walked into the doorway and looked around for a second. It wasn't much, but for me, it was home. A modest entertainment center stood in front of an overstuffed sofa that I had got from Goodwill. There was a piano in the far-left corner, and a few prints hanging from the wall.
"It looks really comfy," he said, "and you managed to buy this place by yourself?"
"No, not really. A friend of mine, Mike, inherited it from his uncle years ago. When he moved to Los Angeles to work for a studio, he gave me the keys and told me to take care of it. He now owns a business up there... I think he's a promoter or producer or something, but he comes to visit every once in a while to make sure that the house is still standing. He uses it kind of like a vacation home," I replied.
"That's cool."
"Yeah... but just make yourself at home. Can I get you something to drink?"
"No, I'm fine," Lance said as he sat himself down on the couch.
"Ok. I just need to check my messages and e-mail, and I'll be right out, ok."
"That's cool," Lance said.
I went about the house, doing the things I had to do. There were a few calls from Aira, wondering what happened, and if I was ok. I then went into my room to check my e-mail, and on my e-business. There were a few e-mails that were from some customers, and some of my on-line friends. My e-business was doing fine. Noting there really needed my attention. After about half an hour I went back into the living room to find it empty. Wondering where Lance could have gone off to, I looked around my house. He was no where to be found, until I went outside in the back yard. He was sitting on the back porch, his spiky blond hair moved in the gentle breeze. He was wearing the same thing he wore when I took him to the Green Garden Restaurant: These black surfer shorts that clung to his cute, firm butt and this funky bright red floral aloha shirt. "Dam, he looks so adorable in that," I thought to myself as I approached him.
Lance was staring off into space. I quietly crept behind him and softly kissed him on his neck as I wrapped my arms around him. Lance jumped slightly, but relaxed in my embrace.
"What are you thinking about?" I asked.
"Oh, nothing really," he replied, "Just thinking about how beautiful this is, how beautiful you are. I can't believe this is happening, and it's happening so fast. And I can't believe that after less than two days, how much I have fallen for you," he continued as he turned around and faced me, kissing me gently on my lips. I kissed him back slipped my tongue into his mouth. His tongue embraced my tongue in the warm orifice of our combined mouths. I felt light-headed and tingly all over, not like before when I passed out, but well, I guess the best way to describe it would be to say that I felt like I was flying. Soaring over everything and anything, and that Lance was with me.
I myself could not believe the events of the past 24 hours. I could not believe that in that time, I had met one of the members of one of the most popular boy bands, and that he was into me, of all people! Why did he choose me? Why was he at that beach, at that particular time? And why did this just seem right for me? I shivered, and Lance broke the kiss.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing," I replied, "It just seems that this is too perfect, but at the same time, it seems that it is so right, it seems as if it were meant to be.... As if faith brought us together, and I know that I may be rushing things a little here, but all I know right now is that I want to be with you."
Lance said nothing, but he pulled me into his arms and held me as a single tear formed in one of those big green orbs called his eyes. It wasn't a tear of sadness though; it was one of hope, one of love, one of longing. "Then come stay with me, at the hotel. I have to leave in a few days, but in that time, we can get to know each other better. Please," Lance broke the silence.
I smiled at the sincerity in his voice. "I'd like that Lance, I'd like that a lot," I said.
Lance waited as I packed a few days worth of clothing into an overnight bag. After that, we jumped into my Jeep and drove off to the hotel.
Back at the hotel...
Justin sat alone in his room in front of his lab-top computer. The meeting that the guys had earlier that day was over, and they had each gone to do their own thing. JC decided to catch up on some sleep, a favorite hobby of his, while Chris and Joey decided to go check out the pool, or more likely go check out the girls by the pool. Justin however decided to check his e-mail... He was waiting for something from a particular someone.
He smiled as he saw what he had been waiting for, and e-mail from someone he only knew as islandgurl. The two had been e-mailing each other for about six months, and despite that they knew so little about each other, and that they had never met, Justin knew that she was the one. He didn't tell the others about her, not even JC knew. Sometimes at concerts, he would picture her sitting in the audience, and sang "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" to and for her, this of course was much to the delight of the prepubescent girl that he was singing to. And, Justin did this without knowing what islandgurl looked like. They hadn't exchanged pictures, mainly because Justin didn't want to, but also because islandgurl didn't have access to a scanner.
Justin was giddy as he read the latest e-mail from his secret love.
Hello my dearest,
How are you doing today? I hope all is well with you. I have a quick question for you though... You said you were going to Kauai in your last e-mail... Well, I think the time has come for us to finally meet. You see, I am from Kauai. I am dying to meet you babe. Can we please set up at time to meet? E-mail me back ASAP!!!
Love Always,
islandgurl
Justin immediately hit the reply button, and feverously started typing away:
Dearest islandgurl,
OMG!!! You are on Kauai? Let's meet for dinner tomorrow, please!!! There's a restaurant in the hotel I'm at, and I would love to meet you over dinner. How does tomorrow at 7? Meet me at Duke's Canoe Club. The table will be reserved under skeeter.
Love Always,
Skeeter
Right after Justin hit the return key, there was a knock at the door. "Hey Justin, can I come in?" It was Lance.
"Sure Scoop," Justin replied as he went to open his hotel room door. Justin opened the door to reveal Lance and myself standing there.
"Hey Jus, this is Steve," Lance said introducing me.
"Nice to meet you Justin," I said as I extended my hand.
Justin smiled warmly as he shook my hand, and said, "And it's great to meet you Steve. I am glad to see that you are finally awake. You know, you had Scoop here, as well as the rest of the guys, a little upset. It's good to see that you are well."
"Thanks Justin," I said.
"Hey Just," Lance said, "Would you mind keeping Steve company for a sec, I want to round up the guys and introduce Steve to them."
"Sure Scoop," Justin replied, "I think that JC may be asleep, and the Chris and Joey went to the pool though."
"OK, let me go find the," Lance said as he walked out the door.
There was an awkward moment of silence between Justin and me, until Justin asked, "So, how did you meet Scoop?"
"Well," I replied, he "We actually me as he saved my life the first time."
"Whoa, dude, you need to explain this one," Justin said in surprise.
"Yeah, well, I was surfing on that beach in front of the hotel, and I was on this totally cool wave, but I was kind of showing off, and well, I wiped out, really bad. I blacked out, and when I woke up, I coughed up some water and saw Lance kneeling over me. I think that he gave me CPR or something."
"That's crunk man," Justin said, still in awe.
"I'm not sure if it's crunk, but I know that it is wack," I said. "Yeah, well after that," I continued, "Lance and I just talked for a while and I took him to this restaurant that my auntie owns. Well, during dinner, I kind of passed out from a concussion that I got from the surfing accident, and Lance drove me to the hospital, saving my life a second time in less than 12 hours."
"Man," Justin said, "You're right, that is wack."
Justin and I just talked about other stuff, I talked about my life on Kauai, and he talked about life on the road. Lance came back with the guys about half an hour later. Lance introduced me to the rest of the guys, and much to Lance's embarrassment, I told them the story of how he saved my life twice in one day. Though out the conversation, Lance looked at me and smiled. He seemed to be radiating warmth and kindness, much to the other guys' surprise. We talked for about an hour when I yawned.
"Guys, it was nice meeting you," I said, "but I am getting a little tired. I think that I need a nap."
"Ok Steve," Justin said, "It was nice talking with you."
"Yeah," JC added, "It was fun."
"Nice meeting you Steve," mumbled Joey.
"Good times," Chris said, "Hey, you wouldn't know any good clubs here, would you... Maybe we all can get together tonight and do some clubbing."
"Well, there's really only one club here, and I would like that a lot," I replied.
"Hey guys," Lance said, "That sounds like a great idea. Actually, Steve isn't going anywhere. I asked him to sleep in that extra room in my suite, I just want to make sure that he's ok."
"That's cool," everyone except Joey said.
And with that, I exited the room and went next door to Lance's room.
After the door closed, there was a momentary silence. JC, Justin, Joey and Chris were all thinking the same thing: Lance was acting like his normal self again. He wasn't distant in the conversation, far from it; he seemed to be enjoying it. They were also wondering if Steve had anything to do with it, even more so now than before.
"He seems like a nice guys Scoop," Justin said, breaking the silence, while the rest of the guys nodded their heads in agreement.
"He is," Lance said as a smile went came on his face.
"Scoop," Chris spoke, "We've been meaning to ask you, is there something wrong? I mean, lately, it seems that you have been distant, but now you seem ok... I mean, does Steve have anything to do with this?
"What do you mean Chris?" Lance asked.
"I think what Chris is trying to ask is if you're ok. If we're ok?" JC interjected. "Lately, it seems we only see you when we have to. You've been so withdrawn lately..."
"Yeah Scoop," Justin said, "I mean, you really scared us when you ran away. It took us a while to figure out where you were."
"Yeah, and we find you, you're balling over some guy you just met. I mean, you haven't fucked him have you Scoop?" Joey practically shouted coldly.
The guys looked at Joey in shock. That would be the only word to describe it, pure and simple shock.
"No Joey," Lance shouted back, "It's not like that. He is just a friend. Just a fucking friend. Nothing more." He got up and slammed the door as he left.
JC, Justin and Chris just looked at each other in shock at what had just transpired.
Next door...
I had just settled down into bed, when I heard shouting from next door. After I heard what Lance said, I just broke down, and started crying. "So, that's all I am to him, a fucking conquest that will be tossed aside. Fuck, I thought he loved me," I thought as I jumped out of bed, picked up my bag, and ran out the door.... Just in time to run into Lance.
To Be Continued...
