Chapter 15
Book 2
Part 9
Nick waved his mother off. As she drove back toward town, he wondered what he was going to say to his dad. He did care for the man, despite receiving nothing but contempt in return. He was happy, however, that his mother had tried to make peace. He would like his son to grow up knowing love from all sides of his family, his parents included.
"What are you thinking?" Leo asked, as Nick re-entered the house.
"Babe, I do not know what I am going to say to the man. I mean, he banished me from the family. Leo, what if he has a go at me, or us, tomorrow?" Nick said, sitting next to Leo on the overstuffed sofa.
"Then we walk out and get on with our lives, with our son" Leo replied, squeezing his shoulder. "I want him to accept us babe. I mean, you love me and I love you; he should be happy for us. But his teachings deny everything we are" Nick said in a soft, defeated tone.
"Well, then, it's his loss. He has a grandchild he will be denying; because, babe, to deny you, means to deny his grandchild, and something tells me your mother will not accept that" replied Leo.
"Okay, we have all day to ourselves; what do you wanna do?" Nick asked, perking up somewhat. "What, besides you fucking my brains out, you mean?" Leo replied with a cheeky, leering grin.
"Well, yeah, besides that" Nick retorted, leaning into Leo and kissing him softly on his eager lips. "I will always love you, babe" Nick replied, and again kissed his lovers lips like they were going to melt away.
"I am hungry, though" Nick added.
"Typical; if it isn't sex, it's food" Leo replied.
"Hey, not fair. You suggested sex. A man needs his energy. I mean, you wouldn't want me stopping half way through because I was tired, now, would you?" Nick joked.
"Okay, Okay; what would you like for breakfast?" Leo asked.
"Something fatty and filling" Nick replied.
"I will be burning it off again, won't I?" He added.
"You bet my ass you will" Leo replied, slapping his ass to make his point.
"And a fine ass it is, babe" Nick smirked.
Leo took down the skillet and prepared bacon and eggs, with hash browns and grits on the side. He made a fresh pot of coffee and sat down and ate alongside Nick. They devoured what had been prepared, then sat in the den and watched some news and Sports Centre, while their food digested.
"You wanna go for a walk, babe?" Nick asked.
"Yeah; it's not too warm though, so grab my jacket" Leo responded.
Soon, they were walking toward the public park. They watched as the kids played with various toys, balls, Frisbees, and dogs. They watched as parents played with their offspring. Nick smiled as he watched three generations of the same family play catch.
"Perhaps, one day soon, that will be us" Leo smiled.
"Yeah, sooner than you might think" Nick replied.
"He's already climbing things; we need to childproof the house now, babe, and a gate for the stairs is a priority" added Nick.
"Already being sorted; I have a specialist coming around tomorrow morning. She has done one of my therapist's homes" Leo added.
"We should have done this before now" Nick berated himself.
"We haven't been in the house five minutes; give yourself a break, Nick" Leo responded to Nick being down on himself.
"It's just, I don't know what I would do if he fell down the stairs or opened something that could seriously hurt him, Leo" Nick added.
"Babe, you are just being a cautious parent" Leo replied, taking a seat on a park bench. A jogger ran past, almost tripping over a small dog that was off its leash. "We have got to get one of those when Nicholas is older" Nick said, looking at the small terrier being retrieved by its young owner.
"Yeah, can I have a jogger, as well, then?" Leo snickered.
"Dumbass" Nick replied.
"Speaking of ass" Leo again leered.
They headed home to a session that Leo was looking forward to. They didn't waste any time, either. They shed their clothing while climbing the steps, and hit the bed.
They made love for almost ninety minutes, satisfying each other fully. Leo could hardly walk when they eventually woke a couple of hours later. He looked at his sleeping lover, and, like earlier, could not remember the last time he felt this happy; truly happy.
"Hey, what are you looking at?" Nick asked, rubbing his eyes as he woke up; looking at Leo, who was transfixed on him. "Perfection" Leo replied. "I can't wait to marry you" Nick responded.
"You say I am perfect, babe; your ass is perfect. I just wish I was a cowboy" Nick said. looking back into his lovers eyes. "Why, so you can ride me like a bronco?" replied Leo. "Nope, so I can brand your ass with an entwined N/S, to say `get off of my property, this ass is mine'" snickered Nick.
"Ouch!!" replied Leo with a smile on his lips.
"Not branding, but perhaps a small tattoo" Leo replied.
"That's a great idea" Nick responded.
"So, you get my name tattooed on your cock, and I have the N/S tattooed on my ass" laughed Leo. "Okay, a rethink may be in order" replied Nick.
They lay, wrapped in each other's arms in bed for an hour, just letting the day drift by. They were more than happy to stay entwined.
"Cinema, or a club" Leo asked, when they eventually got out of bed. "Dan's coming over, remember" Nick replied. "Yeah, but we are going out; he will be dressed for a night out" Leo replied. "Leo, if my dad is as bad as mom says he is, Dan is not going to be in a party mood" Nick replied.
Soon Dan knocked on the front door.
"Doors open" Nick yelled, and Dan walked in.
"Hey Bro" replied Nick, pulling him into a hug.
"How's Dad?" he asked.
"Sleeping most of the time; they are still doing tests" Dan replied.
"How's Mom?" Nick added, as Dan sat on the overstuffed chair, facing both of them. "Bearing up; you know Mom" Dan added.
"Yeah, she was over this morning" Nick said.
"Yeah, she told me" Dan replied.
"So, what do you guys wanna do?" Dan asked, changing the subject. "We thought you might not be up for a night out" Nick replied.
"I don't want to just sit around the house, Nick. I know the old man has given you so much shit; but dude, he's Dad...you know?" he replied.
"Yeah, Dan, I know...okay, pizza and a movie" Nick said, and Dan smiled.
"No beer" Nick added.
"Killjoy" Dan said with a smile at his big brother.
"You are quiet Leo" Dan said, as they headed for the door.
"You are joking, right?" replied Leo.
"Have you tried getting in the middle of you two when you start blabbing? It's best to let you tire yourselves out, then talk" Leo replied, giving a slight laugh. "Oops, the Mrs. is upset" laughed Dan. Nobody else laughed.
"Shit! Sorry, Leo, I didn't mean anything by it; fuck... me and my brain not being used before I speak" Dan berated himself.
Dan looked at Nick and then at Leo. He looked perplexed and waited for the torrent of words about insensitivity, but what he got was a barrage of laughter from both of them.
"Assholes; I thought I fucked up" he berated both of them, as Nick wrapped his arm around his neck and ruffled his hair.
"Loosen up little bro, we are not that sensitive, and we won't break down and cry if you fuck up...chill" Nick added.
"Okay just a bit on edge. Nick, he didn't recognise me at first, when I went to see him. He thought I was you" Dan added.
"Do you wanna stop by and see him first?" Nick asked. "Would you mind if we did?" Dan replied.
"No, of course not, Dan. You are right about his being a dick to me and Leo; but he is still Dad. Do you mind, Leo?" he asked, looking at his lover.
"Babe, you never have to ask that of me. Lets go and see the cantankerous old reprobate" Leo replied.
Twenty minutes later, they were heading into the city and heading for the main hospital. L.A. had some great hospitals, and some amazing neurologists, doing some amazing things with stroke victims.
Leo's POV
We entered and followed Dan, as he knew where he was heading. Nick spotted his mother and went to talk to her. She was sitting outside of a private room with a very beautiful man about Dan's age. Apart from Nick, he had to be the most attractive guy I had seen in a long while; and the most appealing thing that I had noticed, was the fact I still only desired Nick.
I smiled at him. I did not recognise him at all; but he is sitting outside reverend Stones room. Dan had gone inside; I would, however, wait for Nick.
"Hi, do you know the reverend?" I asked, taking a seat.
"Ermm no, not really; I am a friend of Mary's" he replied.
"Are you Andrew?" I asked.
"Yes, how do you know that?" he responded.
"Nick said you were a great help to her; you know, when she was attacked" I replied.
"Yeah, she's always been there for me, so, I was going to be there for her. She is my best friend" he added.
"So, I take it Mary is with her dad?" I asked.
"Yeah, she's been in there a while now. I think that was her brother who just went in" Andrew replied. "Yeah, his older brother is with his mom" I added.
"Yeah, Nick. I saw him; we met, you know... just after, when Mary was still in the hospital" Andrew added.
"Are you Leo, by any chance?" Andrew asked.
"Yeah, nice to meet you" I replied.
"So, are you two dating?" he asked, not in an `are you available' way, but just a general question. "No, we are engaged; we live together with our son" I added proudly.
"Wonderful! That is amazing. When we were talking, when Mary was a sleep, he kept talking about you; how he let you slip out of his life. I could tell, then, how much he loved you" Andrew informed me.
Nick walked over with a tear in his eye, and hugged me tight. "Hi Andrew, you look well" Nick said, still holding on to me tight. I take it from his body language that it's not good news.
"As do you, Nick. You two look good together" Andrew added.
"Hi Nick" Mary said, coming out of the room.
He released me and walked the few steps and pulled his baby sister into a brotherly embrace. Hey, Sis, you look great" he said, kissing her cheek. I had not seen Mary since she was about 12 or 13 years old, and she has blossomed into a very beautiful young lady.
I watched as they chatted about their father; the prognosis was not good. The neurologists had confirmed he had been suffering a series of strokes, and, by the scarring on his brain, it appeared to have been going on for about ten years.
I remember Nick telling me his father had been a very loving father. It was when he turned 16 or 17 that his dad's personality changed; from preaching love and peace, he began preaching the fire and brimstone sermons. Over time, they got harsher and meaner.
I watched as they embraced again, and she turned and smiled at me. She walked over and I embraced her lightly. "Hi Leo, I am pleased you two found each other again; you belong with each other" she said, and smiled again. "Thank you Mary, I appreciate that" I said, and we talked a short while.
"Hey, someone, help me" Dan yelled from the room.
"Let me up, I have to get Nick ready for school" Reverend Stone demanded.
I watched as the man that had caused us so much grief fought to get out of bed. He looked old and frail; he had declined so much in recent weeks. Nicks mother was not lying about his condition; he would not improve.
"Dad, I am here" Nick yelled, trying to put him back into bed. "Who are you, sir? Unhand me at once" His father yelled, confused.
Nick's mother was inconsolable, standing by the door. Mary, at her side, was holding her hand. "He's gone, the man I love has gone" she cried. From what I am witnessing, she may be right.
"Dad, please lie down; you are going to hurt yourself" demanded Dan, helping Nick get him back into bed.
"Mary, call the police" he yelled. A nurse came in and gave him a sedative. He calmed down almost immediately.
When he was asleep, we all headed for a coffee. We sat and Nick looked at his Mother and began to talk.
"So, the specialist?" he asked.
"He had a seizure when he was being examined, so he admitted him on the spot. I got a call and Dan came with me. They just said they would do more tests. I didn't want you unduly concerned, dear" she informed him with an endearment unexpected.
"We have to prepare for the worst, I fear" she added.
An hour later, the head of neurology, someone I knew well, approached us. "Ah, Dr Bo-Trent, nice to see you again" Dr Lewis said, shaking my hand. "Well, Tony, how's Beth?" I asked, going through the pleasantries. "Oh, heavily pregnant and grumpy" he responded.
He took Nick's mother into a private room. She asked Nick to go with her, as she needed his support.
I sat with His sister and brother, nobody talking, just watching the door, waiting for them to return. Twenty minutes passed, Mary was now pacing the floor.
Twenty minutes earlier with Nick
"Please take a seat, Mrs Stone; and you are?" he asked, looking at me. "Nick Stone, he's my father" I added.
"Okay; as you know, he has been having a series of mini strokes for quite a while now; but they have been getting more frequent and in intense. We have scanned his brain and a large section has been affected" he went on.
Some 15 minutes or so later, he came to the crux of his prognosis. "I am sorry to say that he will never recover from this; in fact, he will get much worse. His motor skills will end, and he will be bed ridden at some point. I have conferred with our most renowned specialists, and they say his life expectancy is going to be very short" he added.
"How long, Doctor; please don't sugar coat it" I said, holding onto my mother's arm. "Mr Stone, I am sorry, but we are talking days' rather than weeks or months. My guess is, if these attacks keep happening, I would estimate a day or two at best" Dr Lewis replied.
"I am so very sorry" he added, before leaving.
Nick walked out of the room and went to Leo; his mother into the arms of her daughter. "He's dying Leo, and he never got the chance to meet our son" Nick sobbed.
This man, over the past several years, had brought us nothing but misery; but the heart that beat inside my future husband's chest was one that held forgiveness for his father. Despite the old man's failings as a father and mentor, Nick still loved him.
Nick, with Dan and Mary, stayed in shifts at the hospital. I looked after Nicholas. Nick was where he needed to be, with his family. His mother was there most of the time.
Three days later I received the call from Nick.
"Leo, he's gone" Nick said in a sobbing voice.
