Jack wasn't sure how he felt when he heard the bell ring. He was half hoping he had imagined the whole incident between him and his friend's father. The bell rung a second time. Jack was paralyzed with fear. If it was Mr. Matthews, and he let him in, then what? Would he be consenting to a ...what....not exactly a relationship? It would be more like a fling, a one night stand. Jack had too many of those already. He thought back at Eastland he had found the real thing; an English lit professor who had taken a liking to him. The bell rang a third time and Jack lurched forward toward the door.
"It could be Eric coming home early," he thought as he turned the latch on the peephole and peered out.
His heart skipped several beats as he stared out at Alan Matthews who was running a hand threw his strawberry blonde curls nervously. Jack released the cover suddenly causing it to make a loud clicking sound. He backed away from the door wringing his hands together. He looked around the room nervously, but for what he wasn't sure. He stood there frozen with fear and then he heard the sound of the elevator ring as it reached the floor. He heard the door slide open and suddenly he was at the door yanking open locks and tearing open the door.
"Wait," he shrieked.
Alan spun around half in and half out of the elevator.
"Please wait," Jack said more calmly.
"I...I wasn't sure you...," Alan fumbled for words.
"I didn't think you would come. I wasn't sure I wanted you to..."
Without warning Jack pulled the older man out of the elevator and into his arms. He blistered the older man's lips with kisses. When Alan came to his senses, he wrapped his arms around the teen and lifting him slightly so that his feet dangled mere inches off the ground, carried him back into the apartment. Using his right foot, he kicked the door closed without breaking the kiss. He let the young man's body slide against his own until Jack was standing again. They broke the kiss panting, foreheads pressed together.
"What now," Jack whispered.
"We should go somewhere...somewhere else where we can't be seen."
Jack nodded, his forehead still pressed against the older man's. Alan cupped the boy's face in the palm of his hands and tilted it up for another kiss. This one was less frenzied than the first. It was a kiss of discovery and both men were explorers. Alan knew it was unwise to continue in this fashion. He was well aware that this apartment could be like Grand Central Station at times so he broke the kiss and urged Jack to grab his jacket so they could go. Jack left reluctantly. Deep down he feared that when he returned, Mr. Matthews would no longer be there. He backed away from the man, not daring to turn his back on him until he was halfway down the hall.
The ping of the elevator and the sound of keys rattling at the door sent Alan down that same path. Jack jumped when Mr. Matthews came bursting through the door. He had been preening in the mirror and was embarrassed to find the reason for his preening standing before him. Alan was out of breath and his eyes were wide with panic.
"What is it?" Jack asked.
"Someone's home."
Now it was Jack's turn to panic. Once again he found himself spinning aimlessly around the room.
"The closet," he whispered and grabbed Alan's hand propelling him forward into it.
Alan couldn't hear or see a thing. He suddenly felt like a dirty old man. The irony of being in the closet did not escape him but only added to the feeling of self loathing that was creeping up on him. He shut his eyes tightly, imagining the million things that could happen. Eric flinging open the door, Jack flinging open the door and announcing it was all a cruel hoax. Maybe his whole family was outside, just waiting to point an accusatory finger at him. This was ridiculous. He shouldn't have hid. He was sure he could have given a hundred and one good reasons why he was here. Hiding only offered one.
What felt like an eternity passed before Jack slowly opened the door. The kid looked like he had gone through hell. Alan hated himself for putting this beautiful teen through agony. Forcing him to lie to his friends. "A young man like this," he thought, "should be able to flaunt his love to the world, not hide it like a dirty secret."
"Are you alright," Alan asked, tracing his fingers along Jack's furrowed brow.
"It was Shawn. He forgot his wallet. He's gone."
Jack sounded drained. Alan let his hand caress the boy's cheek and kissed him lightly on the forehead.
"I should go," he spoke softly.
"No...it's okay. We both just panicked."
"That's the whole problem Jack; I've put you in an uncomfortable position because of my own selfish desires. It's not fair to you and it's not fair to my family. Let's stop this before someone gets hurt."
Jack closed his eyes and leaned into the work weathered hand that caressed his face.
"Please Alan. I want this, if only for tonight. Let's go somewhere private like you said and talk about it. Please."
Alan tilted the teen's head up and looked into the brown doe eyes of the young man he wanted so desperately. He knew the damage had already been done and he was selfish...selfish enough to want to experience the beautiful teen just once. He'd made that decision the minute he left his home.
"Alright Jack. Just for tonight."
Jack grabbed his jacket and followed Alan out into the hall, onto the elevator and into his car. He felt a certain sadness knowing that what he was about to do would effect more than just the two people in the car. It was Eastland all over again.
