Chapter 37
Jeremy assumed his Monday classes would be hectic, and he was right. But unlike some of his fellow teachers who taught students from several grade levels, over 90% of Jeremy's pupils were freshmen. Monday would be the only day that week he'd have a lot of kids disrupting classes by entering late.
Teachers at Cherry Hill worked as cafeteria monitors on a rotating schedule. Along with two others, Jeremy drew that duty during the second week of November. On Monday, nothing out of the ordinary happened over lunch. So, after telling the other two teachers that he needed to leave a few minutes early, Jeremy returned his lunch tray and hobbled out of the cafeteria. Having learned from Shaun, after first hour, who was taking the yearbook photographs, Jeremy decided to drop by Room 124 before returning to his classroom. Maybe he'd have a chance to talk to Devon for a few minutes before afternoon classes began. Jeremy vividly remembered him, from the online stories, as a very sexy boy of thirteen. He wondered if he would recognize him as a man.
The hall leading to Room 124 was empty of students, the grey and black tile floor so shiny he could almost see his body reflected in it. The noise of Jeremy's thumping gait echoed off the pale green walls, as he approached the room. Since the door was open, he walked right in.
"Devon Myers?"
With a start, the young photographer looked up from his laptop. Obviously, he had been so engrossed in his work that he hadn't heard ... or at least hadn't been paying attention ... to Jeremy's noisy approach. To the photographer's left, a small blue and white cooler sat open, with the remnants of a small lunch strewn over the tabletop beside it. An engaging smile crossed the twenty-something's face.
"Yes, how can I help you?" He stood and extended his hand to the man who was wearing a clunky boot on his right foot.
Smiling, as he crossed the room, Jeremy eyed-up the young man: he was wearing blue jeans under a cream-colored, crinkly-textured long sleeved shirt, with `J bar A Photography' tastefully emblazoned in forest green above the left pocket. An older version of the young teen described in the stories, Devon had grown into a good looking man: around six feet tall with an athletic build, medium length flaxen hair, and a golden tan. Using a firm grip, Jeremy shook Devon's hand.
"My name's Jeremy Carter and I teach Algebra I here at Cherry Hill. Do I need to make an appointment to have a new yearbook photo taken this afternoon?"
"Nope; just drop by. I'll be here for at least an hour after classes end, processing student photos." Devon glanced at his laptop. "There's a lot more to a job like this than just snapping pictures of everyone."
"I can imagine." Jeremy acted more interested in the process than he was. "Mind if I have a look? My boy was in here earlier this morning."
"Go right ahead." Devon turned the laptop around. "I can probably find his pic for you, if you'll give me a few seconds."
Jeremy glanced at the computer screen and noted the open program ... Capture One. He'd never heard of it before. "Thanks, if it wouldn't be too much trouble. His name's Shaun Carter."
Devon scrolled through the Numbers document on the iPad. "It looks like his was the twenty seventh photo taken, first hour." He turned the computer back around so he could scroll through the students' photos. "Here he is." He clicked on a thumbnail, bringing up a much larger photo. "Oh ... he's THAT kid!"
Jeremy chuckled. "Uh-oh ... what'd he do, anyway?"
"It was nothing like that." Shaking his head, Devon laughed. "He was in here with a friend, before school. I had my back to the door when they came in, and he confused me with another of our photographers, Kaiden Matthews."
"So are all of you boys working for J bar A Photography now?"
"I guess..."
Jeremy shook his head. "I'm sorry, Devon, you don't know where I'm coming from, do you? In some ways, I feel like I already know you, Kaiden, and the others. I read about all of you as teenagers, in those stories on Nifty."
"Oh ... those." Devon laughed easily.
"Yeah. Man, I envy the things you guys did back then. I was surprised, but pleased, when I saw the announcement that your company would be taking these photos for our school."
Devon didn't directly reply to Jeremy's statement; but, with a far-away look ... as if remembering ... he nodded. "Sometimes, it's hard for me to believe all that stuff happened to us. I guess it must have been 10 or 11 years ago."
"Sounds about right to me. How's your brother Jared doing, anyway?"
While Tim was finishing his question, the first bell sounded. Devon waited for the ringing to end, before answering.
"He's making it okay, I guess. I'm afraid it'd take a lot longer to tell you about him than we have right now." As Devon was speaking, he could hear teenage voices in the hallway. "Maybe when you come in for your photo, though."
"Sure, Devon. I'll look forward to it." He paused for a brief moment. "Well, I guess I'd better be heading to my classroom, but it was sure nice to meet you!"
"Same here."
Devon always enjoyed meeting new people. It was about the only redeeming quality of a job like taking yearbook photographs. Though he still related well to high school students, since he was only a few years older than them, the teens generally cycled through too fast for much conversation. Okay ... J bar A Photography paid him well, too, especially since it was only a part-time job ... and a college student, like him, who struggled every month to keep from falling too far in debt, needed all the help he could get! Occasionally, however, he would meet someone interesting. Already today he had met three: Mr. Carter, his son, and his son's friend. He'd spent more time than usual, talking to both boys while snapping their photos.
As he watched the algebra teacher thump from the room, Devon wondered how he had injured his foot.
Thoughts of injured feet caused his mind to turn to his older brother, Jared. While their relationship had had its ups and downs over the years, they had been on good terms when Jared left home at age 18 to join the army. He had been deeply affected by the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, when he'd only been 14. Even after the passing of four long years, he still wanted to do his part to help see they didn't recur. After basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and a short stint stateside, he'd been deployed to Afghanistan. Once in a while, Devon would get an email from him ... always stating, among other things, how much he liked military life.
In fact, after his first year in the Middle East, he excitedly volunteered for a second tour of duty.
Less than a month into his second tour, the army Humvee, in which he was riding, drove over a land mine. Four of his buddies were killed outright, while Jared and a second soldier were critically wounded. The injured were airlifted to a military base in Germany and then transferred to a medical center for treatment.
After hearing of the incident, Mr. and Mrs. Myers flew to Germany, leaving Devon and a hired hand ... with lots of help from the men on the neighboring J bar A ... to keep things going on their small family ranch. Though he was still listed as `critical', Jared was taken out of intensive care while his parents were there. After his folks returned home, Jared was in military hospitals, both in Germany and the United States, for an extended period, as his many wounds healed. When he was finally released, it was with a prosthetic right leg from just below the knee. He still had months of rehab in the States ahead of him, but even after his life-altering experience, Jared reenlisted in the army. He had decided to make it his career.
Devon hadn't seen his brother in over two years, though Jared ... now a man of 25 ... planned to be home sometime during the upcoming holidays.
Devon's mind was sharply brought back to the present, when the second bell began to ring. He must have really been lost in his thoughts, because he hadn't even noticed when the kind, motherly looking and acting woman from the office had collected the iPad from off the table beside him and taken her seat behind a student desk just inside the door.
It was time to get back to work!
Busy, with a never-ending stream of students, the afternoon flew by for Devon. After the last teen of the day had been photographed, Devon began to batch process the photos from fifth period. The first of seven teachers and one administrative assistant arrived about quarter after three. Between photos, he worked on the sixth period kids' photographs. He was about to begin the batch process, when someone from the office escorted one of the studio owners, Tim Matthews, to the door of Room 124. Smiling, Tim thanked her before she returned to the office.
"Hey, Devon! I was on my way back to the studio from a meeting up in Loveland, and decided to drop by. How'd everything go today?"
Devon shrugged his shoulders. Taking underclassmen yearbook photos wasn't a fun job. It was tedious and even boring in some ways. Unless quite a few students bought photo packages, it was low paying for the studio, as well. But, if the students were happy with their photos, Tim felt that it, along with word of mouth from Seniors, was a really good way for the studio to get its foot in the door with the teens. And taking Senior photos could be very lucrative. Even though the economy had been in the doldrums for several years, proud parents still wanted ... and were willing to pay for ... a special photograph of their son or daughter.
"You know how it is, Tim; too many kids and not enough time."
"Yeah ... sorry you drew the short straw for this little project, Devon." Tim hoisted himself onto the table beside the laptop. "But I know you're giving it your all."
Both men laughed; Tim always had an easy-going, upbeat way of bringing out the best in his employees, as well as those he photographed. Not only was he an amazing photographer, but he was a truly good person. Back when his sons had been teenagers, Devon, along with their other friends, always envied Chris, Kaiden, and Ryan because they had a father who `got it'. Devon admired Tim as his boss even more.
The men were deep in conversation, when Jeremy stuck his head through the door.
"Sorry, am I interrupting anything?" he asked, glancing from Devon to the older man with the salt and pepper hair, who was wearing a similar outfit to the younger photographer. "I can come back, if I am."
Tim slipped off of the table.
"Nope ... you two go right ahead. What we were talking about can wait." He watched, as Devon picked up the iPad and turned it on.
With a smile, Devon handed it to the teacher, before looking at Tim. "Mr..."
"Carter," Jeremy said.
"was in here earlier today." He looked back at Jeremy. "Just add your name to the bottom of the list." He chuckled. "And be sure to double check the spelling."
Jeremy smiled, punched in his name, and handed the tablet back to Devon.
"Thanks," Devon responded, glancing at the iPad, before turning toward his employer. He introduced the two men. "Tim, I think you already know Jeremy's son." He went on to describe how.
As Jeremy posed for his photo, he got to know Tim. In only a few minutes, it was almost as if they had known each other for a lifetime. Tim volunteered to take Jeremy home, so the teacher friend ... who had appeared at the door to Room 124 while Jeremy was having his picture made ... wouldn't have to wait around for him. As Devon worked on the last of the photos he'd taken that day, the older men continued their conversation. Nearly 45 minutes later, when all three men left the school building ... ushered out by the custodian, who was preparing to lock the doors ... they were good friends.
Because of the change back to Standard Time ... giving them an hour less daylight in the evening ... the sun had already dropped behind the mountains and twilight had fallen.
Except for the janitor's old sedan, which was on the far side of the parking lot, and a couple of vehicles in the nearby visitor's section, the parking lot was empty. A dusty, black extended-cab Tacoma pickup with extra-large, knobby tires ... and which appeared to have seen plenty of rough, off-road handling ... sat beside and a new-looking, cream Suburban, with a dark green `J bar A Photography' see-thru decal on the darkly tinted back window. Bidding goodbye to the others, Devon hoisted himself into the pickup, as the older men climbed into the Suburban.
While the usual drive from Cherry Hill to Jeremy's apartment complex took five minutes, max, Tim decided to take a circuitous route.
Although Jeremy assumed Shaun would be with Zach for the first hour or two after school let out, when he realized Tim wasn't going to take him right home, he took out his iPhone and texted Shaun. He didn't want his son to worry if he came home to an empty apartment expecting his dad to be there.
As Tim drove aimlessly, the men talked and talked ... they had so much to say to each other. Jeremy even carefully broached the subject of Tim's past sexual relations with his teenage sons ... and learned that the online stories had been mostly true. It was almost an hour after they left the school, when Tim finally parked in front of Jeremy's apartment building. They talked for a few moments longer, before Jeremy opened the door of the truck. Lifting his hand in a gesture of goodbye for now, he smiled. He had just made an amazing new friend, and had a standing invitation to visit the J bar A anytime he felt like it ... along with Liam, Shaun, Zach, and his mom, too, if she wanted to come.
Alone, almost three hours earlier, Shaun had slipped the door key out of his pocket, unlocking their apartment. Mrs. Andersen had wanted Zach to go with her to visit relatives, and had been parked in front of the school ... waiting for him ... when the school day ended. Zach wasn't all that keen on the annual visit to the old aunt in Fort Collins. So much so, he hadn't even mentioned it to Shaun until the day of the visit, hoping his mom would change her mind about making him go.
But she hadn't. It was one of those family things he couldn't get out of.
After closing the door behind him, Shaun trudged down the short hall to his bedroom. Slipping off his school pack, he dropped it onto his unmade bed, slid out of his jacket, and toed off his sneaks. Trying to remember the last time he had been home alone after school, he rested his arms on the chest of drawers, and listened to the muted, mid-afternoon sounds of the apartment. Someone was playing music a bit too loudly in a neighboring unit. While Shaun couldn't make out the melody, the rhythmic bass notes put a smile on his face.
He listened for a few moments, before leaving his room. Stopping in the hall just outside his door, he clicked on the furnace, to take the chill out of the air. Then, he stepped into his bathroom to relieve himself.
After shaking off and zipping up, he walked the few steps to the kitchen, filled a glass with water, and gulped it down. He wondered what he ought to do with himself, without Zach around. He glanced at the clock on the stove: 3:24. Since his dad probably wouldn't be home for another 45 minutes or so, and he was feeling horny, he decided to make good use of his time alone by getting on the computer and checking out some of the porn sites he and Zach had viewed together. Of course, there was Facebook, and maybe he'd do some reading, as well.
His cock, which had only been semi-erect, was throbbing as he climbed the stairs to the loft. Slipping out of his clothes, Shaun excitedly plopped his naked ass into the leather-like desk chair, and reached for the mouse. Immediately, the computer screen flashed to life and Shaun navigated to one of the sites with the gay videos. Spreading wide his coltish, mostly hairless legs, and grasping the stiff slab of meat between them, he clicked on the most recent post.
What the fuck! Shaun began pumping his cock faster and much harder. He wished Zach was sitting in the chair beside him, so he could see this video too! Maybe, after school on Tuesday or Wednesday ... or at least by Friday, when they were off for teachers' meetings ... they'd be able to view it together.
In no time, Shaun was shooting powerfully into a folded Kleenex.
Eager to watch more videos, Shaun tossed the tissue on the floor, before viewing the next five or six posts. Although none of them were anywhere near as hot as the first, the seventh caused him to shoot again. Sated, he cleaned off his left hand and the tip of his deflating penis, while deciding to check out Facebook for a bit.
He had just navigated to his wall ... to see if anyone had left him any messages or pics ... when his phone beeped to let him know he'd received a text. Shaun turned from the computer, stretched to the floor, and retrieved the phone from the left front pocket of his jeans. It was a message from Zach. Bored out of his mind, he complained to Shaun ... again ... about being forced to visit the old aunt.
The two texted back and forth for a short while, until Zach's mom told him to put the phone away. Shaun was about to lay down his own phone, next to the computer keyboard, when another text popped up. This one was from his dad, saying he'd be home late.
Though Shaun wondered why, he texted his dad, "OK," and set the phone aside.
