Thanks for the positive comments after chapter 35, guys! Honestly, I wasn't all that happy with my writing in that chapter, but it's a balancing act between posting in a timely manner and getting it right. Anyway, I hope you enjoy chapter 36!
Chapter 36
Sometime in the dark of Saturday night, Zach woke up with a very dry mouth and an urgent need to piss. Shaun, who was sleeping on his back, was snoring softly beside him, as Zach slipped from under the covers. After a stop in the bathroom, he padded toward the kitchen for a glass of water. A small, dim lamp on the counter, which the Andersen's used as a nightlight, provided all the light Zach needed to get his drink.
After gulping down half a glass, Zach refilled it with cold tap water. Standing in front of the sink and staring through the window at the darkness beyond, he sipped the water, while gently scratching his low-hanging balls. He glanced skyward, where only a few stars twinkled. Apparently, clouds were hiding most of them from view.
The furnace blower clicked off, and Zach enjoyed the nighttime silence, while emptying his glass. Finally, his mouth felt normal. He was about to head back towards his bedroom, when a muffled thud, followed by a clatter that sounded like falling yard tools, came from somewhere outside of the house.
`What the fuck?' he thought, hurrying to the back door, and clicking on the outdoor light.
Craning his neck to the right, he peered in the direction of the farm's only outbuilding. Even though the circle of light was much dimmer by the time it reached the barn, it appeared the sliding barn door was gaping open. It was an unspoken rule, around the Andersen household, that the barn door was always supposed to be pulled completely closed ... especially, at the end of the day ... to keep unwanted critters out. Right after he and his mom had moved to the farm, they'd had a problem with raccoons getting into Jake's dog food.
Had he been the last one to leave the barn?
Zach couldn't remember, but he decided he'd better throw on a few clothes and check things out. Hurrying back to his bedroom, he clicked on the ceiling light.
"Are you coming back to bed soon," a tired-sounding Shaun mumbled.
"In a little bit, Shaun. I was getting a drink of water, when I heard a loud noise outside. Somebody left the barn door open, and I think a raccoon must have gotten in. I'm gonna chase it out and close the door."
Shaun rubbed his eyes. Suddenly, at the thought of seeing wildlife up close, he was no longer sleepy. "I'll come with you, Zach."
In the process of rolling out of bed, he stepped on Jake's tail, waking the dog with a start and yelp. Since Shaun was barefoot, however, Jake's pride was probably hurt more than his tail. Shaun petted him soothingly, anyway.
All of a sudden, Jake began to bark loudly.
"Quiet, boy ... you'll wake Mom," Zach commanded, in a hushed voice, as both he and Shaun began to pick up their clothes from off the floor.
But Jake didn't stop barking. Instead, while the boys were quickly stepping into their jeans, the dog trotted into the kitchen. After pulling on their sweatshirts and sliding their feet into sneakers ... leaving them untied ... the boys ran after him. Jake stood at the back door, alternately barking and growling, while baring his teeth.
"What's the matter, Jake?" Heidi called groggily, from upstairs. Jake was usually a well-behaved dog, who hardly ever barked inside the house. Yawning, Heidi reached for her bathrobe and loosely tied it around her naked waist. Moments later, she stepped into an old pair of pink house slippers and headed downstairs.
All four met in the kitchen.
"What's going on, Zach?" Heidi asked.
"I don't know, for sure. A couple of minutes ago, I heard some banging noises in the barn. I'm guessing a raccoon got in, again. Anyways, I told Shaun about it. We were gonna go check it out, but, as Shaun was getting out of bed, Jake woke up and started barking." Zach nodded at Shaun and Jake. "I guess the three of us will head out to the barn and see what's going on."
He opened the kitchen junk drawer and pulled out a cheap plastic flashlight. In the darkness, they'd need it to find the pull chain for the single bare lightbulb which illuminated the interior of the barn. He turned the flashlight on ... nothing. Smartly rapping it against his other hand, he moved the switch from on' to off' and back to `on' again. After a couple of tries, it glowed feebly. Not the best light, but it would have to do.
While Heidi knew that Jake was sometimes agitated by nearby wildlife, she'd never seen him react quite so violently. A concerned look crossed her face. "You and Shaun be careful out there!"
"Don't worry, Mom ... we will."
Zach sounded more confident than he felt. But, as man of the house, he believed it was his responsibility to take charge in a situation like this. Wishing for a more powerful beam from the flashlight, he led Shaun to the back door. No sooner had he opened it, than Jake darted out and bolted towards the barn. The teens followed, as fast as they could.
Fearless, Jake ran through the cracked barn door, followed by the clatter of falling metal shelves and everything that had been stored on them. Something seemed to be lumbering around inside the barn.
Immediately, Zach stopped running, and held out his hand to stop Shaun, too.
"That sounds a LOT bigger than a raccoon!" he exclaimed. "Surely it's not..."
Before he could finish his statement, a frightened-looking black bear ... not really a cub, but not a full-grown adult, either ... charged through the barn door, with Jake hot on its heels. When the bear saw the teens, it was anyone's guess, as to who was the more frightened. Mouths open, the boys froze in place. The bear ran straight at them for a second, and it couldn't have been more than 15 or 20 feet away, when it veered sharply to the right. Following the well-worn path beside the barn, it ran toward the beaver pond.
"Jake!" Zach called out. "Heel, boy ... heel!"
Obediently, Jake called off the chase, returning to Zach's side, moments later.
"Are you okay, boy?" Shaun asked, as both teens examined the dog. While the bear could have laid the dog out with one swipe of its clawed paw, obviously the larger animal's first instinct had been flight, not fight.
From the open back door, Heidi called out, "That was a close one, boys ... TOO close!"
"I know, Mom." Still shaking on the inside, from the near encounter, Zach hurriedly led the other two back to the house.
After everybody was safe inside, Shaun said, "I didn't know you guys had bears out here."
"Me either, Shaun. That's the first time I've seen one around the farm." Heidi paused thoughtfully. "But I guess we aren't all that far from the foothills, and that IS bear country." Glancing at Jake, Heidi ruffled the dog's thick, winter fur. "I'm sure glad Jake was with you boys. I hate to think what might have happened if you two had walked into the barn, unconcerned, and startled a bear ... even if it wasn't full-grown!"
"I know," Zach answered sincerely. While he knew that the bear might have been more afraid of Shaun and him than they were of it, he also knew it could have decided to lash out at them, and they would have had no way to protect themselves.
Heidi wrapped her arms around the two boys, hugging them protectively.
"It looks like I'll need to buy a padlock for the barn door when I go into Longmont tomorrow."
"What are you gonna do about the rest of tonight, though?" Shaun asked. "I mean, the bear probably didn't eat all the dog food, yet. Won't it just come back, when everything quiets down?"
"I guess it might," Heidi replied. After thinking for a minute, she suggested Zach tie a length of twine to the handle on the sliding barn door, and secure the other end to something that would hold it closed. She shook her head. "From all the clatter I heard, there's probably going to be one heck of a mess to clean up in the morning!"
Zach agreed.
"Shaun, let's see if we can find some rope out in the barn, to tie the door shut. We can check on the damage while we're out there." He turned to the dog. "Come on, Jake."
Even in the feeble glow from the flashlight, it was obvious that Heidi had been right; things were an awful mess in the barn. Five rickety metal shelving units, four feet wide and six feet tall, had been used to give some semblance of order to the cluttered barn. But now, three of them lay in a jumbled heap, the many contents of their shelves scattered across the uneven, hard dirt floor of the barn.
The boys worked their way around the mess and turned on the light.
"My bike!" Zach exclaimed.
Beneath two of the fallen shelving units lay Zach's recent birthday present. In the dim light from the flyspecked, 60-watt bulb, the boys couldn't tell whether or not it had been damaged, as they pulled it out from under the fallen shelves. After leaning it against the wall, where the shelves had stood, they found the large ball of twine. Zach also located the hammer and a large spike from the junk strewn across the floor. He drove the nail into the aging barn wood beside the sliding door, wrapped the twine around it and the door handle, and they had their temporary fix. He tried to force the door to open, but it wouldn't move.
With the excitement of the night behind them, sometime after four in the morning, everyone headed back to bed.
The boys `got' to clean up the barn on Sunday ... a job that took longer than either of them imagined it would. Except for a few new scratches, Zach's bike seemed to weather its encounter with the bear just fine. By early afternoon, a shiny brass padlock was hanging from a new hasp on the barn door.
The predicted snow didn't develop that weekend, so Shaun had to wait to begin practicing on a snowboard and teaching Zach how to snowshoe. However, the boys did watch three or four instructional snowboarding videos on YouTube. The more he watched, the more excited Shaun became! Snowboarding seemed a lot cooler than skiing, and at least as much fun. From watching the videos, anyway, it didn't look all that hard. Of course, like skateboarding, Shaun was sure it would take lots of practice to get good at it.
Before suppertime on Sunday, Shaun reluctantly told Heidi that he needed to leave for home. Over the weeks he had known her, Shaun had grown to love Zach's mom, and at times almost looked at her as his own. Stretching out his arms, he gave her a big hug.
Smiling, Heidi hugged him back. "I'm sure glad you guys decided to spend the whole weekend here." Releasing Shaun, she looked him in the eye. "You know, Shaun, this old farm just isn't the same, without your smiling face."
"Thanks, Heidi; I love it here ... well, MOST of the time, anyway."
"Yes, sorry about all the mess you had to clean-up this morning. But I bet you boys got a closer look at a bear than 99% of guys your age."
Shaun laughed. "TOO close for me!" He turned to Zach, expecting agreement.
"Hey ... I wasn't scared at all!"
"Yeah, right."
Shaun shook his head at Heidi, and all three laughed, before the teens headed toward Zach's bedroom. As they entered the room, Shaun asked, "What are you gonna wear for your picture tomorrow?"
Zach chuckled. "Well, after what your dad told us in class yesterday ... you know, about how these pics will be with us for our whole lives, and all ... I guess I'd better wear that plaid shirt I got for school. The one with a collar, that I haven't worn much."
"Yeah, you look sexy in it, Zach."
"Hey, I'm sexy in ANYthing I wear ... or don't wear," Zach smirked.
Meaning just the opposite, Shaun replied with a disinterested, "Whatever." But he was smiling broadly, and his dick had risen to attention, as he curled his arm, companionably, around his boyfriend.
"What are you gonna wear?" Zach asked.
"I guess I'll wear a shirt with a collar, too. Maybe that thin yellow one you like so much."
"The one you can see your tan through ... cool!"
The boys talked, while Shaun dressed, and a few minutes later he was ready to leave. He was about to say goodbye to Heidi, when she suggested, "Shaun, why don't you let me drive you home this afternoon?"
"Sure ... you know I'm not gonna turn down an offer like that!" While Shaun didn't mind skateboarding home alone, making the four or five mile trip in warmer weather was a lot more enjoyable.
Zach quickly threw on a few clothes, and a short ten minutes later, the Andersen station wagon rolled to a stop in front of Shaun's apartment building. The boys kissed quickly, before Shaun hopped out of the car. After thanking Heidi for the ride, he tore up the stairs to the third floor. The door to their apartment was unlocked and he walked in.
Wearing only boxers, the men were sitting side-by-side on the couch, watching the final quarter of the Denver Broncos vs Oakland Raiders football game. Several beer cans sat on the floor around the mens' feet, and they were obviously very excited about the action on the TV.
Four weeks earlier, when the San Diego Chargers ... who would probably always be Liam's home team ... had come to Denver for a game, the Chargers had won, 29-24. Liam, of course, had been ecstatic about the San Diego win, while Jeremy was glum. However, both men were rooting for Denver as they played Oakland.
"How's the game today?" Shaun asked offhandedly, dropping his skateboard by the door. Because Denver hadn't had a winning season, since he was old enough to care, he'd never been a big football fan.
"You ought to sit down and watch this one," Jeremy replied. "It's exciting! The Broncos came back to tie it up at 24 in the third period, and the game's still tied, mid-way into the fourth."
"Maybe I will watch it." Shaun got himself a Mountain Dew from the refrigerator. He held the door open. "Do you guys need another beer?"
"Yeah, I'll take one," Liam replied.
"How about you, Dad?"
Jeremy leaned down and lifted the can he'd started a few minutes earlier. It felt like it was almost full. "I'm fine for now, but thanks for asking."
Shaun closed the refrigerator, and joined the men on the couch. Sitting beside Liam, he handed him a PBR, while popping the top on his soda.
"Thanks, Shaun." Liam ruffled the teen's hair, before snaking his arm behind Shaun's neck. Briefly, he pulled Shaun close. He had grown to love Shaun, not quite the way a father would, but maybe as if he was the younger brother he'd never had.
After a time of adjustment, Shaun had come to love Liam, too. How could he not? Liam had always been good to him, and he obviously made his dad very happy.
"Yes!" Jeremy shouted, drawing Shaun's eyes to the widescreen TV. Ball in hand ... and with only one man to beat ... a Bronco had broken free of the pack, and was racing toward the goal line.
Liam withdrew his arm from behind Shaun and jumped to his feet. "Fuckin' way to go!"
The Oakland crowd was silent, as the TV announcers described the replay: Oakland punted the ball to Denver player Eddie Royal, who wove his way through a crowd of defenders, before breaking free. He raced toward the opponent's end zone. The punter attempted a halfhearted tackle, but Royal made him miss and crossed the goal line seconds later. He had run the ball all the way back for a touchdown ... 85 yards! The color commentator heaped praise on the fourth year player.
The Broncos were never headed after that, and went on to win 38 to 24. Shaun was surprised, but he really enjoyed watching the game with the men. If every game was as exciting as this one had been, he began to feel he might be able to get into football, ... especially if the Denver team came out the victor.
The predicted snow finally arrived sometime during Sunday night. A couple of inches covered the ground by Monday morning. By now, Liam was beginning to feel like an old hand at driving on the white stuff, and he decided to drive his own car to work, rather than take the Subaru. Jeremy's teacher friend ... who would be taking Jeremy and Shaun to school ... was running later than usual, so they got tangled up with school bus traffic as they approached Cherry Hill.
Shaun found Zach at one end of their usual table in the school cafeteria. A gaggle of other students was clustered around him. As Shaun hurried toward them, he heard Zach exclaim, "It was the biggest fuckin' bear I ever saw ... and we chased it out of the barn and away from the house!"
"No way!" one of the kids replied.
Wide-eyed, Zach shook his head, while declaring it definitely WAS true. He was so wrapped up, spinning his tale, that he didn't notice as Shaun walked up behind a few of the other teens. Shaun shook his head in admiration of Zach, because of the way he could weave fact and fiction so seamlessly. One item he conveniently left out of his retelling of the story was how frightened both boys had been, and he diminished Jake's role in the bear encounter to insignificance.
As Zach was answering the many questions asked by his friends, he noticed Shaun. "Hey, Dude! I was just telling everybody about the bear."
"Yeah, I heard." Shaun nodded to the other teens, while unshouldering his pack and dropping it to the floor by his feet. "How's it goin', guys?"
Everybody said hi to Shaun, and they talked for a while longer. Slowly, the other teens wandered off, in groups of two and three. After everyone else was gone, Shaun laughed.
"Geez, Zach ... I don't remember it happening quite that way."
Zach shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, well ... I guess your memory's not very good."
He smirked for a moment, before both teens burst out laughing.
"Fuck, you're looking good this morning!" Shaun exclaimed.
Standing at the end of the table, he eyed up his boyfriend: Zach was wearing his plaid sport shirt and probably the pair of extra low-cut jeans that went with it. Though, since Zach was seated and his shirt was untucked, Shaun couldn't tell for sure. He removed his hoodie and stuffed it into his gray and gold school pack, before straddling the bench directly across the table from Zach.
"Man, you look good enough to eat," Zach replied in a low voice, as his eyes pored over Shaun. He was especially turned-on by the way Shaun's dark nips showed through the thin fabric of his close-fitting, short sleeve shirt.
Shaun laughed, glancing at the empty tray on the table in front of Zach. "It looks like you've already had your breakfast." He sat down, spreading his legs wide.
"Yeah, well ... you know how school food is. Let's just say I'm not full yet."
Both boys chuckled; the sexy banter had caused both their penises to swell.
Changing the subject, Zach continued, "How about we take a little walk this morning and check out Room 124?"
"You mean the room where they're gonna take the pictures?"
"Yeah," Zach replied. "And see which one of the guys is going to be the photographer."
"Sure!"
The teens collected their packs, and after Zach dropped off his cafeteria tray at the dirty dishes window', they headed down the hall in the direction of the gymnasium. Room 124 was used for multiple purposes. Often, it was filled with band equipment, though the athletic department also claimed it from time to time. Because of its proximity to the stage, the drama department used it as a makeup room during the spring musical. And, of course, it was also used for Yearbook photos. Beside the door, an easel held a piece of cream-colored poster board. The words Yearbook Photos Taken Here' had been very neatly lettered, in forest green, above a small J bar A Photography logo in the same green color. A rubber doorstop held the door open. And, from the otherwise darkened room, a shaft of golden light spilled into the hall.
Shaun led Zach into the room, which had been transformed into a small photo studio.
On one wall, a mottled, pale gray backdrop hung from a rod, supported by heavy-looking, black metal poles. A circular area in the center of the backdrop was illuminated from the floor by a single light, while two umbrella lights were focused on a wooden posing stool. It had been positioned a yard, or so, in front of the backdrop. A camera on a heavy-looking tripod, a laptop, an external hard drive ... all of which were connected by cables ... and an iPad had been set up in front of the windows. The windows had been covered with some type of blackout film to darken the room. Although the photographer had his back to the door, the golden mane of shaggy hair appeared to be a dead giveaway as to who he was.
Shaun smiled. "Kaiden! I wondered who'd be here today."
The photographer turned around; it sure wasn't Kaiden. In fact, Shaun had never seen the man before, and his face turned beet-red with embarrassment.
"Nope ... name's Devon. Sorry, but you got stuck with me this morning." The man smiled and held out his hand. "And who might you be?"
Zach shook hands with the man. "My name's Zach, and my red-faced friend here..." He roughly rubbed his boyfriend's back. "...is Shaun. We were out at the J bar A a few weeks ago and met a lot of the guys. Your hair's the same color as Kaiden's. I guess that's why Shaun got the two of you mixed up."
Devon's smile grew more broad. "Oh, yeah ... Ryan told me all about your visit." With a twinkle in his eye, he added, "So you're Zach, huh ... the guy who lost his load all over Tyler!"
"Oh, that." Zach shrugged his shoulders. He couldn't help it that he'd cum on Tyler's pants leg. He fingered his dick, through his jeans. "Hey, you know how it is."
"Yeah, I sure do." Devon shook his head. "Guys, I'm really sorry I missed the pick-up football game that afternoon."
"So, then ... you're the same Devon, too?" Shaun's face had finally returned to its normal tan color. "From the Nifty stories, I mean."
"I guess I must be the one." Devon chuckled. "I'll have to let them know, back on the ranch, that you two guys go to school here."
"Thanks." Zach glanced from Devon to Shaun. "We'll both be having our pics taken first period today. Shaun's dad is a teacher here, too, and I bet he'll be in later."
"Sounds really good," Devon replied. "Hey ... I promise to do an especially good job on all of your photos."
I think I will end chapter 36 with those words. I hope you enjoyed reading it! Why don't you send me an email fotogme11@yahoo.com, if you did?
Have a great week everyone.
