This story is loosely based on reality ... very loosely! The story idea has gone through many changes, since I began thinking about writing it down. I hope you enjoy reading it!
"Shaun! Out of bed!" the boy's dad bellowed, from outside the closed bedroom door. It was the third time he'd had to call his son that morning. After the briefest pause, with no reply, he added, "NOW!"
Moaning, with eyes still closed, the 14 year old boy answered, "Yeah, yeah; I hear ya." The springs in the old mattress squeaked, as he rolled over, while pulling the rumpled sheet over his head of cropped, sun-bleached, brown hair.
"You better get a move on," came the stern reply. "If I have to call you again, I promise you won't like it."
With a loud sigh, Shaun threw back the thin cover and stumbled to his feet. "Okay, okay, Dad. I'm up, all right? ... but I don't like it."
"Breakfast in ten minutes," Mr. Carter stated, shaking his head. He hoped every morning wasn't going to be like this, now that Shaun had returned from a summer at his mother's, and school was beginning. Turning away from the door, he strode down the short hall to the kitchen.
"Fuck!" Shaun mumbled under his breath, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
Still half asleep, he grabbed the top pair of underwear from the chest of drawers, opened the door of his small bedroom, and stepped into the bathroom just across the hall. Fumbling with the knobs, he started the water rushing into the tub. After kicking off a pair of saggy, denim-blue boxer briefs, which were barely clinging to his slim hips, he stood in front of the full-length mirror behind the door. Like most teenagers, Shaun enjoyed looking at himself. Though he wished for a taller, more muscular body, at least he was beginning to look his age.
Yawning, he raised both hands over his head, stood on tiptoes, and stretched ... reaching high for the ceiling. The sleepiness began to leave his body, as he admired the new hairs in both pits. Sensually, he ran his fingers through the hair, over the smooth skin on his slim chest, across the prominent tan line low on his hips ... from a summer on the beach ... through his sparse pubes, and over his thicker, but still WAY too small, semi-erect cock.
Suddenly, he noticed that the bathroom was filling with steam.
`Damn,' Shaun thought, fingering his dick, while adding more cold water to the hot.
After stepping into the shower and rubbing out a quick one, he hurriedly washed himself, half-dried, and pulled on the pair of old white briefs he'd grabbed earlier. Laughing to himself, because they were way too small, he made a beeline to his room. Now wide awake, Shaun remembered that all his newer clothes were still in the suitcases, from the summer he'd just spent in south Texas.
One thing was for sure: Shaun didn't want to look like a dork on his first day of high school. Unzipping the largest of the three cases, he rummaged around for what he wanted, and quickly changed into a freshly washed pair of trim, gray boxer briefs, before dressing in rust and tan colored, plaid shorts and a light green T-shirt. He adjusted the shorts `just so' on his hips, before slipping his feet ... which seemed to be growing faster than the rest of his body ... into his favorite pair of flip-flops. While combing his fingers through his damp hair, he headed towards the kitchen.
"It's about time," his dad said, anxiously glancing at the clock. With a faint smile, he added, "Grab a quick bowl of cereal, Shaun. We have to leave, right away ... or we'll BOTH be late for school."
A Colorado transplant, 34 year old Jeremy Carter ... Jem to friends ... had taught Math at Cherry Hill High School, on the western edge of Longmont, CO, ever since the school opened six years earlier. He loved what he did; so much so, that he could never see himself doing anything else. Of course, over his career, he'd enjoyed the good students ... what teacher doesn't ... but it seemed he'd had more than his share of challenging students, as well. Maybe that was because he generally taught Algebra I to freshmen, and all the kids had to take the subject to graduate, like it or not.
Although some of his colleagues felt he'd been given a special gift for helping kids, he didn't really agree, since he worked hard at his profession. Often, he felt he got more from his pupils than he gave, anyway. When he could help a struggling student grapple with a particularly difficult concept ... and see a light turn on in that boy or girl's mind ... those times were amazing. Even more special, because it had only happened twice so far in his career, were the times he'd seen downright poor students, who'd hated math, turn things around completely. Since he never knew exactly what to expect from his pupils, each new school year was exciting to Jeremy. This year, he'd have at least one extra-special student: Shaun was among the 25 kids in his first class of the day.
"You know that I'd just as soon stay home," Shaun replied, not sounding extra-special at all.
"Son, we both know that's not going to happen," his dad replied, using his best parental voice. While clearing away his breakfast dishes, he added, "Anyway, I thought you liked school."
"I used to," Shaun, who had always been a reasonably good student, answered. Longingly, he remembered the fun times he'd had in middle school, with his best bud, Joshua. Until recently, they had been almost inseparable. "But, it's gonna be a whole new school this year; and everything will be different." He poured a little milk on his Fruit Loops and wolfed down two bites. "I won't know anybody," he added, not quite truthfully, while chewing. "Especially, since Joshua moved away."
"You're right; everything will be new," Mr. Carter stated, thoughtfully, "and I know it probably won't be easy on you without your best friend. But try to look at it as an opportunity." Hopefully, he added, "I'm sure you'll make plenty of new friends this year."
"Yeah, right," Shaun sighed. He didn't make friends easily.
"Well ... at least you'll know ONE person." A slight smile crossed the man's lips.
Glancing up from his almost empty bowl of cereal, the teen shook his head. "Like that's gonna help me any." He guessed his dad was trying to cheer him up, but adults just couldn't understand how he felt; things were easy for them. Anyway, Shaun was sure his feelings didn't matter to anyone but himself.
His dad did care, though; sadly, he saw a lot of himself as a teenager in his son. Growing up, he'd been a quiet, shy kid ... the kind parents love and most kids shun. Back then, he didn't relate well to others his age; and, as an adult, he regretted that he'd missed out on so much as a child. He wasn't trying to relive his life through his son; but, like any good father, he didn't want Shaun to make the same mistakes as he had. It hadn't been easy, but through his five years in college, and, afterwards, his work experiences, he'd lost most of his shyness. Sometimes, though, he still had a hard time expressing himself to his children ... especially the younger two, who still lived with their mother.
After breakfast, father and son hurriedly shouldered their backpacks; and, after locking the apartment, they raced down the three flights of stairs. Normally, since they only lived a mile or two from Cherry Hill, they'd have ridden bicycles or maybe even walked. However, since they were running late, they took the car: a well maintained, but ancient, dark blue Subaru wagon. The morning was clear and cool, even though Colorado was enduring the hottest August on record, and the two rode in silence. They arrived at school on time, but just barely. Fortunately, Jeremy had spent the first two weeks of August planning for the new school year, and everything in his classroom was already in order.
"See you in class," Mr. Carter said.
"Sure," the boy replied, smiling wanly. He guessed he ought to find his locker and make sure the combination worked.
While his dad headed toward his classroom, Shaun pulled a slip of paper from his pack and read it again. His locker was supposed to be downstairs. Not really paying much attention to the noisy throng of kids choking the hallway, he glanced around for the nearest flight of stairs.
As the first bell was ringing, Mr. Carter walked into his classroom.
"Good morning, girls," he said to the two early birds in the second row.
"Good morning, Mr. Carter," one of them replied, while the other looked at him dreamily.
Jeremy smiled at the two, and, after firing up the laptop on his desk, he dropped his pack on the floor beside his chair. As students began to shuffle into the classroom, he keyed in his password, and, moments later, he was looking at the roll. Over the summer, of course, he'd glanced through all his class rolls. If he'd taught an older brother or sister a couple of years earlier, he'd wonder if the new students would look or act like their siblings. Sometimes he'd be right, but usually he got it wrong.
The second bell rang, and Mr. Carter glanced up. For a few moments, he let his eyes roam over the class ... his largest of the day. There seemed to be about an even mix of boys and girls, and many of them looked as if they would rather be anywhere else than a classroom. He didn't notice Shaun.
Standing, he waited a moment for the talking to die down, before cheerily greeting the students. "Good morning, class; welcome to your first day at Cherry Hill." Then, smiling, he added, "I'm sure everyone's glad to be back in school, after a long, boring summer vacation." That line drew the expected responses from the kids, causing his smile to broaden.
Shaun slipped into the classroom, looked for a seat near the back, but had to settle for the only empty desk, by the wall, near the front.
"I'm Mr. Carter," the teacher continued, "and in case some of you didn't know, this class starts at 8:05 sharp." His eyes caught his son's, as if to say, `I know we were running late this morning, so I'll let your tardiness slide this time; but don't let it happen again.'
Sure that everybody was staring at him, Shaun's face turned beet-red. He stared at his desktop, while his dad made a few announcements. And he wasn't paying much attention to his dad, when the man sat down and began to call the roll.
"Rachel Albers."
"Here."
"Lars Andersen."
Several kids giggled, causing Shaun to glance around, until his eyes found the reason.
Slouched low in a desk near the back of the classroom, his legs haphazardly spread wide, an obviously self-assured teen halfway raised his hand and answered, "Yeah, that's me, I guess."
More stifled laughter.
Sitting up a bit, the kid continued, "But only my mom ever calls me Lars." Without looking around the classroom, instinctively, he knew all eyes were on him. Lifting his disinterested face a bit, he smirked at the boy seated in the desk to his right. Glancing toward the teacher from beneath a longish mop of wavy, straw-colored hair, he raised the bill of his cap for a moment, before letting it drop. "My middle name's Zachary, so call me Zach ... okay?"
Though Shaun had never seen Zach before, he thought, Now, that's the kind of guy I wish I was. He envied both Zach's appearance and cool demeanor.
Mr. Carter didn't feel quite the same.
Although, in a kind voice, he said, "Sure, Zach, thanks for letting me know." He thought, `I could have a challenge with this one.' While he always tried his best not to pigeonhole students, before he got to know them and they had a chance to prove themselves, Jeremy mentally put a red mark next to Zach's name. The optimist inside him hoped for the best, but the realist expected the worst, as he returned to the task at hand.
A couple of other kids mentioned their preferred names, as Mr. Carter called the roll, and he keyed the information into the class roster. After finishing the daily chore and sending a short email ... first hour, all present ... to the office, the dark-haired teacher stood, straddled a front corner of the desk, and sat again. Smiling at the class, he stated, "At least until I get to know all of you, I'm going to seat the class alphabetically."
Several groans went up.
"I know, I know," Mr. Carter answered, raising his hands in a `calm down' manner. "Believe it or not, I still remember what it was like being a student."
"Yeah, I bet," Zach murmured sarcastically, toward the boy he'd smirked at earlier. He shook his head, causing the gold studs in both ears to twinkle. "Fuckin' front row ... again!"
"Blame it on your dad," the kid replied, causing Zach to sigh.
He carried half the man's genes, but he'd never met his father. Though he now understood things, for years, he never knew the real reason why his mom wouldn't share her life with a man. The guy had donated his sperm, and Zach was created ... simple as that. Since his mom would hardly ever talk about him, for all Zach knew, the man's last name might have been Williams. Andersen was his mom's last name.
"After I get to know all of you, we may change things around. If...," with a twinkle in his deep brown eyes, the teacher continued, "...if you turn out to be the great bunch of students that I know ALL of you can be."
Lifting his laptop, Mr. Carter began to read through the class roster again, assigning seats. As Zach expected, he got the second seat on the front row, just off to the side of the teacher's desk. There weren't any `B's', so Shaun ... who was next in line ... was given the seat next to Zach. As far as Shaun was concerned, sitting beside Zach was way cool, but it also meant he would be right in front of his dad, which wasn't!
Making the best of the situation, Zach smiled over at Shaun and said, "Hey."
Shaun's heart skipped a beat.
`The coolest guy in class smiled at ME,' he thought, nervously. Not sure what else to say, he just smiled back. After a brief pause, he haltingly added, "Hi, Lars ... I ... ummm ... meant to say, Zach."
Zach glanced away, while lifting his old, green and white CSU baseball cap and scratching through the thick hair beneath. Laughing easily, he pulled the long bill down until it almost hid his amazingly green eyes.
Shaun began to blush. Damn it, he'd stuck his foot in his mouth ... again. Certain he'd ruined things with Zach, before even getting to know him, he averted his eyes.
"I think I'm gonna like sitting next to you," Zach stated, as he slid down in his desk and spread his tanned legs wide. "Because you make me laugh." The morning sun, which filtered through several skylights in the roof, caused the sun-bleached hair on the boy's lower legs to shine like white gold. "What was your name again?"
Shaun's heart skipped another beat. He looked up and smiled again. "Um, it's Shaun Carter," he answered, trying not to sound too eager. Was it possible this year wouldn't be as bad as he'd feared, after all?
Perched on his desk, Mr. Carter noticed the brief conversation between the boys ... especially the smiles. His son badly needed a friend at his new school,' he thought, though maybe not the kind of kid Zach appeared to be.Then he mentally kicked himself. Slow down, Jeremy; you're going to give Zach the benefit of the doubt ... remember?'
As the teacher kept calling out names, and kids changed desks, Zach commented, "It's weird, though, that your last name is Carter, like the teacher's."
"Really weird," Shaun agreed. For a moment, he wondered how to reply, before deciding on the truth. "He - he's my dad."
"No way..."
Shaking his head yes, as his dad demanded the class's attention, Shaun had to wonder if `no way' was a good or bad thing. Zach had seemed like a friendly enough kid; and even though they'd just met, Shaun was already sure that he wanted to be his friend. But Zach hadn't acted as if he cared much for school. It could be that he wouldn't want to be friends with the teacher's son. Then again, maybe Zach would look at it as a way to get in good with the teacher. Or maybe, as Shaun hoped, it just wouldn't matter one way or the other.
He glanced in Zach's direction, but Zach's eyes were on his dad.
Zach was nearsighted enough that he had a pair of glasses. Though his mom made him take them to school, they hardly ever came out of his backpack. He felt they made him look like a nerd. From the back of the classroom, Mr. Carter had just been some man with brown hair. Up close, however, he was anything but `just some man'. In a heartbeat, Zach's cock was throbbing urgently ... a good-looking body always turned him on ... demanding attention that, unfortunately, Zach couldn't give it at the moment. His eyes pored over the handsome teacher, taking in every detail of the man: about five nine or ten, he guessed, short brown hair, brown eyes, five o'clock shadow ... even in the early morning, an athletic physique, and a not-so-subtle bulge in the crotch of his khakis. Suddenly, Zach was glad he'd been assigned a seat in the front row. Math had never been his favorite subject, but maybe that was about to change. He glanced over at Shaun, who was looking forward. Yes, now he could see the family resemblance between the scrawny kid sitting on his right and the man in front of him.
Breaking into Zach's thoughts, Mr. Carter announced to the class, "I've got some exciting news for everybody." All eyes were on the teacher. "This year, our school has been chosen to be part of a pilot program in the Longmont School District."
A couple of kids groaned.
The teacher nodded. "I know, I know; but ... I think you are going to like this one." As he walked to the bookshelves in the back of the room, most eyes followed him. "You won't be guinea pigs for an all new curriculum. Though...," Pausing for a moment, he picked up a slim white carton. "...you will be part of an important experiment; one that could affect the way all future high school students in the district are taught."
He opened the carton and held up an iPad. Suddenly, all the kids sat up and took notice.
"No old fashioned text books for you guys this year!" Mr. Carter explained that some elective courses didn't yet offer e-textbooks, but all the core curriculum was available that way. Since each tablet had been preprogrammed for the individual student, and the district wanted to keep close tabs on its electronic investment, it took a while to check out the iPads. "These aren't toys..."
"Yeah, right," Zach pretended to agree.
"...but hi-tech tools that we hope will help you learn more effectively."
"I think this is gonna be my kind of year," Zach commented to Shaun. With his eyes fixed on the teacher, he added, "And my kind of class."
"Mine, too," Shaun happily agreed. For the second time that morning, he thought maybe Cherry Hill High wasn't going to be so bad, after all
Well, there wasn't a whole lot of exciting action in this chapter, but I was trying to set the stage for what I think could be a very interesting story. I hope enough of you agree, and will send me an email (fotogme11@yahoo.com) to let me know. If I hear from enough of you, I'm sure there will be a chapter two. Will there be more? That will be up to each one of you.
