Kyle said "Thanks for everything you've done for me. You know if you asked anything of me at all, anything, I'd do it for you." Ryan hugged Kyle back, feeling emotionally choked by the boy's innocent and unconditional response.

The Master and The Mate - by Deepdiver

CHAPTER 5 - S O S from a Crow's Nest

The next day after a nice full breakfast of pancakes made by Kyle and eggs and sausage made by Ryan they took the yacht out. Kyle undid the ropes mooring her, and Ryan called him up to the bridge and let him pilot their way out of the marina. Ryan stood close by, refreshing Kyle's memory about the safety rules. Once out of the marina, Kyle gunned her and kept her well within the channel.

They went a good ways out toward Montawk and then headed into the marshy inlets. Ryan had been preparing a pole with a double lure and used frozen killies for bait. He instructed Kyle to troll slowly through the channels but to put her in neutral whenever he saw Ryan reeling in a fish -- they were going for either flounder or fluke. At one point they went over a bank of fluke and Ryan pulled two out of the water simultaneously. A good twenty minutes went by before they went over another school and this time Ryan managed to catch an 18 inch flounder.

Now sure that they had their dinner secured, Ryan baited the hooks and then took Kyle's place at the wheel. Kyle was lulling off, when two fluke hit his bait. He was so shocked he almost lost his pole overboard. He hadn't thought much of Ryan's fishing skills -- it looked easy! -- but now feeling the flat bottom fish fight for their lives got his adrenalin going. Ryan couldn't leave the bridge to help him, but Kyle eventually managed to bring the two 22" on board and gave Ryan the broadest and proudest smile he had seen yet. Ryan wished he had got his digital camera handy -- this was truly a Kodak moment.

"So what's the difference between them? Why do you call one a fluke and the other a flounder?" Kyle asked.

"Look at the eyes," Ryan answered, "they are both born like regular fish and only become flat bottom fish as they grow. The flounders' eye migrates to the same side of his body so he has two eyes together on the side that becomes top. The fluke's eye doesn't migrate and so they have one eye on the top and one on the bottom." Ryan pointed out to his mate.

Ryan took the 'Gardie' back to a quiet inlet down the coast and they anchored and set too preparing the meal they had caught; they had only just started eating, and were enjoying their stuffed flounders cooked over the grill when Ryan's cellphone rang. It was the marina's harbor master -- he knew Ryan was at sea and had a problem -- there was a kid at the marina that had climbed up one of the masts of a clipper and was threatening to jump.

Ryan forgot about the rest of his meal and told Kyle to pull up the anchor. Within 40 minutes they were heading into the marina and could see the young man and a few people on the dock watching him. They didn't bother taking the 'Gardie' to her own berth, but pulled up to the nearest open place on the dock. Ryan had explained to Kyle why they were rushing back and what to do once they arrived. Ryan himself leapt from the yacht and walked briskly down the dock to the cluster of bystanders watching the kid aloft..

Ryan stopped by the elderly harbor master, who was talking to Kirk from the marina's machine shop, and asked them what was going on. Neither of them knew what, if anything, had happened and why the boy had climbed the tall mast. Ryan took one look up at the kid and how high up the mast he was and thought, 'Shit, I can't climb up there!'

"Kirk, can you take your cellphone up to him so I can talk with him?" Ryan said anxiously.

"Gee, Doc, I would love to, but I sprained my wrist working on a motor yesterday and it hurts too much to use it." Kirk sincerely lamented.

By this time, Kyle had walked over to join the small crowd, and said, "I'll get it up to him."

"But you've never climbed any rigging before. It's not as easy as it looks." Ryan objected.

"Come on, give me the cellphone." Kyle said, taking it from an unresisting Kirk and quickly beginning his ascent before Ryan could renew his objections. He had only got about three rungs up when he suddenly realized how precarious a climb it was as the boat rocked gently; but in the rigging the swaying was far more apparent than on the deck. The kid sitting high up the mast, became even more agitated -- more for Kyle than for himself -- as he could see Kyle wasn't at home aloft.

"Kyle, go slowly!" Ryan yelled up to him.

Hearing Ryan yell, Kyle looked down and suddenly became dizzy as he tried to focus on the swaying figures looking up at him. "Don't look down!" Ryan yelled just as Kyle lost his footing. His leg went right though the ropes and he suddenly found himself tangled and scared out of his wits.

"Kyle, don't move!" Ryan made for the rope to try to climb up and help his mate when Kirk grabbed his shoulder and held him back. Bill, the kid high up the mast, began to descend towards Kyle. Within moments, Bill was pulling Kyle back up into a stable position.

"Hey, thanks, guy, I think you just saved my life." Kyle said.

"Well you're not down yet, let me help you." Bill responded. truly concerned with helping his rescuer.

"Hey, I was supposed to give you this phone so you could talk to my boss." Kyle said, but then added, "Maybe you'd rather talk to him down on the floor."

"Deck" Said Bill.

"Huh?" Kyle replied.

"You said 'floor', but its called the 'deck'," Bill corrected Kyle, immediately understanding why Kyle had almost killed himself on the ropes.

Once down on the deck, Dr Ryan and Bill took a walk down the pier and began chatting.

"You all right?" Kirk said to Kyle.

"I'm fine." Kyle reacted.

"You staged that fall, didn't you?" Kirk asked.

"I'll never admit to that, but when you think about it, it was a lot better idea than going all the way up where he was perched, don't you think?" They both laughed but not heartedly, concerned whether Ryan could help the kid or not.

Kirk then offered to pilot the 'Gardie' over to its own berth; once there, Kyle tied her in a crisscross fashion to keep her centered so she wouldn't bang into the pilings. Kirk and Kyle chatted together and Kyle told him of his wonderful experiences at the museum, the zoo and the fishing. He gave one of his catches to Kirk to take home to his wife and Kirk was just leaving when Ryan returned with Bill.

"Kyle, Bill will be staying with us tonight, can you show him to the other cabin on your floor?"

"Aye, aye, Captain." Kyle said teasingly, showing off a bit in front of Bill.

"Once you've done that, then get the massage table ready, please." Ryan said as he headed to the bar to make himself his favourite cocktail -- a Black Russian. He came back with three and offered one to each young man when they came back up to the main deck. Bill sipped his drink which he had never tried before, liking the coffee flavour. Kyle went right over to the bulkhead and pulled out the massage table.

"Kyle, I want you to give one of your special massages to his young man. He has been through a lot these last few days and really needs to relax. Do you think you can do to him what you did to me last week?" Ryan said cryptically.

"Aye, aye, captain, I'll give it my best shot." Kyle answered.

Turning to Bill, Ryan said "Why don't you go down to your cabin, strip down to your skivvies and come back up here. Kyle will have you feeling a lot better before you know it. I taught him myself."

Kyle was somewhat confused by all the cryptic language. He loved the idea of getting his hands on this stud, but did Ryan expect him to do what Ryan had done to him ... or just get him to go to sleep? He decided to play it by ear.

When Bill came back wearing just a towel around his waist. Both Ryan and Kyle ogled his upper chest which had nice short hairs, his abs, a six pack that could make any man envious, had a thin line of hairs trailing down into his navel (a nice insie), and continued down to below his towel. His nipples were small, like dimes, but on rounded pecs indicating that he spent time at either a gym pressing weights or doing push ups and pull ups. His legs were also covered by dark hairs which clung to his skin. With his tanned white skin accented by his dark hairs he was the perfect compliment for Kyle's blond-haired body. Ryan thought his eyes were going to pop right out of his head.

"Gee guys, you are making me blush." Bill said.

"Well, I'll leave you both to it." Ryan said, hating to leave, but eager to reheat the meal he hadn't finished earlier and to check his email.

Kyle pointed at the table and told Bill to lay face down on it.

"I hope you're better at massages than climbing ropes," Bill teased.

"Well, if I slip into a hole this time, I doubt that you will want to see me rescued as quickly." Kyle retorted as he started working on Bill's back and legs as Ryan had taught him.

"God, that feels so damn good, " Bill said with his tongue feeling heavy because he was so relaxed.

"So do you want to talk about why you felt so bad earlier." Kyle said, not trying to be nosey, but opening the door for Bill should he want to share.

"It's not easy to talk about. It was good talking with Dr. Ryan..." Bill began to explain.

Downstairs, Ryan put his plate into the microwave and then went over to his PC to check his email account and to catch up on the latest episode of the story he been following for several weeks on the Nifty archive, called (you guessed it) 'Danny's Rehab Program.' He made a mental note to send an email to the author to encourage him to continue writing -- he had only read up to the part where Danny had fallen off his horse; but he thought it was a cheap literary trick to leave everyone hanging like that. Still, he had really enjoyed how this character was becoming a christocentric figure in the story, slowly gathering his group of apostles ... "Some deep spiritual stuff," he thought to himself. (God, I am bad; he thought - his proofreader silently nodded his agreement as he left that aside in).

He saw that his old friend, Edwin, was online and they began chatting over the latest development in the story that they were both enjoying, and were soon carried away criticizing and trying to second guess where the author was going. They both admired how the author managed to keep the story true to life and the sex at a believable pitch; unlike so many other stories [Editors Note - modest he ain't!].

Besides discussing the story they exchanged words of mutual caring and regret for being so far apart, but neither could see a solution to their dilemma. So again they said their goodbyes feeling somewhat frustrated.

Back upstairs, Kyle began rubbing Bill's pecs. "Wow, love how you do that." Bill said and then added, "I came out to my parents three days ago and my dad said it would be better if I was dead...." Tears flowed down the side of Bill's face. Kyle didn't know what to say. His hands had stopped moving but were still on top of Bill's chest.

"That must be awful for you to deal with. Sorry, guy. So you're gay? Kyle asked innocently.

"Yeah, did you tell your parents?" Bill asked presuming Kyle was also out of the closet.

This really put Kyle into a tail-spin. "What? Gay, me? Where did you get that idea?" Kyle protested.

"Oh, sorry, I just thought that you and the doctor were lovers. Anyone can see how much he cares for you. Sorry man." Bill said.

About ten fuses burnt out in Kyle's head. He had so much to sort out suddenly he couldn't figure where to begin nor the words to use. Finally he blurted out, "No, I'm not out, I mean, I'm not gay."

"So, are you going to finish the massage, or are we done?" Bill asked nervously.

"Oh sorry, sure...." Kyle said as he began moving his hands sensually over Bill's hard but firm and velvety soft skin. "Sorry, I didn't mean there was anything wrong with being gay, but that's not me."

Kyle kept repeating to himself those same words, 'but that's not me,' as he moved down over Bill's tummy, closer to his genitals. Bill began to giggle as Kyle moved his hands nearer to his navel.

"I think this one is ticklish?" Kyle said trying to break the mood of the conversation. Kyle began tickling him in earnest and before you know it they were into a full wrestling match rolling around the floor, I mean deck. They were almost evenly matched. Bill was stronger, but he was almost naked and it was easier to take advantage of him. When they tired they just both laid side by side, looked into each other's eyes and smiled. Bill extended his hand to Kyle and said, "Friends?"

"Friends," Kyle affirmed. Then they both headed down to their respective cabins. Kyle was lying on his bunk going over the conversation that he just had with Bill in his head, when he heard Bill's door open, then a knock on Ryan's cabin. He fell asleep before hearing Bill return to his room. He didn't sleep well, wondering what Bill and Ryan were doing so long in Ryan's cabin.
