MARTIN ROBERTS INVESTIGATES
Chapter 2
A few miles across the city from where Martin and Tom lived was the flat belonging to Graeme Adams, who was a twenty-five year old DJ. He lived in comparative luxury and as he lay in bed in his elegant bedroom, covered over the whole ceiling and walls with mirrors, he could not help but reflect on his good fortune.
Graeme had grown up in Scotland the son of an absentee father and a drug addict mother. It would hardly have been surprising had he become a tearaway but he somehow managed not to do so. Throughout his early years he developed an interest in music and was always aware of the latest trends and the best sellers. He grew up quickly, looking after his mother as best he could and gaining a sound knowledge of the popular music scene. Graeme attended school as much as he could and seemed to be developing into a normal teenager. However, the thing that Graeme most dreaded were the occasional visits of his father because the man was a brute and a bully. He knocked his estranged wife about when he was there and hid struck Graeme when he had blamed his father for his mother's addiction. It was hardly surprising when some time later his mother took one dose too many and Graeme had the horror of finding her lying across the floor of her bedroom unconscious one morning. Later the same day she died without regaining consciousness, a sad end to a sad life.
Graeme had expected to be taken into care and was quickly moved to a residential children's home where he was visited from time to time by his father. After one short but very violent visit, Graeme left the home. He ran away at the age of fifteen and travelled south to London. Unlike many that followed this path, Graeme proved to be a fortunate young man. He did not fall prey to the paedophiles and pimps that scout the London stations looking for 'young meat'. On the other hand he only had a small amount of money, which he had saved and found that the cost of living in a hostel was very high. Graeme took to walking the streets and begging on the tube to raise cash. He knew he was stepping into dangerous waters but equally knew that he had little alternative. His other option was to sell his body for sex, a choice that was not entirely unattractive to Graeme. He had been involved with an alder teenager before he left Scotland, although this had not been a financial arrangement and had been confined to wank sessions. Graeme knew that he could earn money for that sort of thing and that he was good looking enough to earn a living. However, although still only fifteen, he was street wise enough to know that this should be the last resort.
In the end, he was again lucky. He had been begging at one of the London tube stations when an older man in his forties had stopped and spoken to him.
"Hello, young man, my name is Sam Silver. I do not give money to beggars but I am willing to buy you a good meal. If you want to eat with me and tell me your story I may be able to help you further, find you a job, somewhere decent to live, that sort of thing."
"Thank you, I'd be grateful for a good meal", replied Graeme expecting little more than a fast food meal.
Graeme fell in alongside the tall dark man and they walked away from the station towards the busy main street beyond. As they walked the two chatted casually. Graeme offered some information about himself.
"My name is Graeme and as you can probably tell, I'm from Scotland."
"No doubt looking for fame and fortune. How old are you, Graeme?"
"Almost sixteen, sir"
"Shouldn't you be at school?"
"Probably sir, but I ran away from my children's home and am too young to get a job but I don't want to go back to Scotland."
Graeme added that he had run away from his abusive father and never wanted to be returned to anywhere where he would have to see him again. Sam Silver nodded gravely and led his young friend to a small but interesting restaurant just off the main street. Graeme had never been confronted with such a choice and read the menu thoroughly before opting for a steak, having checked at least twice that he could choose anything he wanted.
Over dinner, Graeme told Sam his life story and the older man listened in silence, broken only by the occasional word of sympathy or expression of encouragement. As Graeme finished his large ice cream dessert, Sam asked for the bill and paid it. The two left the restaurant and could have been father and son, despite the disparity in looks between the two of them. Sam was about to call a cab when he stopped and looked at Graeme,
"I was going to send you back to your hostel but I've had a thought. I have a large home nearby and there's plenty of room, you could come and live with me. I have a spare bedroom and it's really too big for me on my own. I run a large department in a recording company, I'm sure I could fiddle you into a job there. If you don't like the home I provide or you don't like the job, fine no hard feelings. What do you say?"
Graeme did not know what to say. His head was warning him against this stranger he had only just met but his heart was attracted by the thought of working in the music industry and having access to a decent place to live. Sam could see the hesitation in Graeme's eyes and in his delay in response.
"Tell you what", Sam continued, "why don't you try it for a couple of days? No harm either way or meet me tomorrow after a night of thinking it over."
"No", said Graeme, "I've decided I think I'd like to come with you tonight and give it a try."
"Good. Let's go then. We can collect your things from the hostel tomorrow, assuming you decide to stay for a while."
Graeme smiled broadly as Sam said these words and Sam returned the smile and then called a cab. The journey did not take very long before it stopped and the older man and the teenager alighted. The street was a short one with old-fashioned lamp standards and a row of neat small town houses. At the end of the row was a small block of apartments with a side door and a front door. As they went in through the main door Sam told Graeme that if he came to live permanently in the flat, he would be able to access his part of the flat directly from the side door. Graeme had never seen such a place. It was an executive flat that had everything. The apartment was warm and cosy and the rooms were beautifully furnished. Graeme was not used to such luxury. Each bedroom was small but well furnished and the master bedroom was en suite but Graeme had to use a bathroom close by down the corridor. Not that he cared; it was infinitely better than the tiny room in the hostel and the communal bathroom he had been used to. As he explored Graeme saw the other door with its access down the stairs and out of the side of the building. He really would be able to come and go as he pleased.
Sam allowed Graeme a few moments to settle in and then appeared at the door to his room holding bath towels and washing gear. He handed them over and then gave Graeme a set of keys pointing out the side door key in particular. Then Sam retired back to the kitchen where he began to make hot drinks. A few moments later Graeme joined Sam in the kitchen and they drank a warm drink and Sam showed Graeme where everything was kept. After he had done this, Sam announced that he was off to bed.
"Got a early start tomorrow and I'll start work on finding you a job. I gather from what you said that music is a particular interest of yours. Make yourself at home in the morning and I'll try to arrange for you to come to my office and have a look round. If you want to work there I'll try to fix it for you."
He shook hands with Graeme and went to his room, closing the door firmly behind him. Graeme waited a few minutes and then went back to his room to bed.
In the morning when Graeme got up there was no sign of Sam but a note on the fridge door indicated that Graeme should help himself to whatever he wanted. The fridge was well stocked and Graeme had a couple of fried eggs and some toast. He had just finished eating when he was startled by the phone ringing. He was unsure whether to answer it so he waited and was relieved to hear the answering machine click on.
"Hello, Graeme, it's Sam. Hope you slept well. When you get this message call me back. My office number is by the phone pad. Bye for now."
Graeme went to the phone and just managed to catch it before Sam put his phone down. Sam told Graeme how to find his office building and what to bring and the teenager went off to dress and then set off to walk the short distance to where Sam would be waiting.
It took a little time but Sam somehow managed to arrange for Graeme to get a job and a National Insurance number so that he could work. He was already sixteen by the time that he started work and was doing well, living rent free, having his meals provided and working in the pop music industry. He had access to a fine stereo system and the latest records and he soon began to re-acquire a range of titles for his collection. He was also able to buy new clothes as well as save a lot of money. Sam took pleasure in his young protégé's development and never seemed to ask for anything in return. Graeme had taken to the world of work like a duck to water; he had shown a good understanding of his subject and had a pleasant and respectful way with colleagues and with telephone enquiries. At home, Graeme also learned to cook and had been given a full set of butcher's knives as a present by Sam.
Over the months after they first met, the older man provided a stable home and a fatherly influence on Graeme and this arrangement was enjoyed by both parties. It might have remained like this had not something unexpected happened. Sam arrived home later than usual and decided tot take a shower before eating. There appeared to be no sign of Graeme so Sam took a leisurely shower and wandered around the flat in just a towel. Sam decided to go and get some clean towels from the airing cupboard, which was located in the main bathroom. The door did not have a lock and so Sam walked straight into the bathroom to be confronted by Graeme, naked in the bath and masturbating. Graeme's long cock was rock hard and the head exposed as his foreskin was rolled right off it. He did not notice Sam standing there at first, as he was so deeply engaged in his daydream and wank. Sam saw at once what Graeme was up to and should have left immediately but the sight of this handsome young man, naked, hard and wanking brought a stirring in the older man's groin. Sam hesitated that moment too long and Graeme saw him. The young teenager tried not very hard to cover himself up but quickly noticed that the thin towel covering Sam's middle was tented out. Graeme smiled at Sam and stood up in the bath, now making no effort to cover himself up. Sam began to stammer something about changing the towels but he could not tear his eyes away from the sight of the youngster's erection. Graeme stepped closer and said,
"I've never known how to thank you for all your kindness to me, but now I think I know how to."
In one deft move Graeme pulled the small towel that was covering Sam's waist and exposed the equally rock hard prick of his benefactor. Graeme, whom Sam had assumed was inexperienced in such matters as sex, got onto his knees and began to kiss the exposed head of Sam's beautifully cut cock. Sam could feel the teenager's warm breath on his rampant prick and knew that he was unable to resist what was happening. For years Sam had sublimated his sexual desire for young teenagers by a considerable devotion to hard work and by rigid self-discipline. He had known from the moment that he had first taken Graeme in that temptation would be always there but believed he would be strong enough to resist. At this moment Sam realised that his high expectation had been misplaced. Graeme's lips had now begun to suck the exposed head of Sam's hard prick into his warm mouth. Sam, having been without a sexual experience with another person for so long and having relied on masturbation as his only sexual outlet, moaned with pleasure as the youngster engulfed more of his glans and shaft. Whether it was the excitement of the moment or the sudden and surprise ending of years of self denial that triggered him it was impossible to tell but within seconds of entering the eager teenager's mouth, Sam was firing his ball cream and Graeme was swallowing it down his throat. Sam gave no warning and Graeme had been surprised at the speed with which the older man had reached his orgasm. Sam was full of guilt,
"I'm sorry Graeme. I should not have done that."
Graeme responded equally emphatically,
"Why not? I wanted to do it and you obviously needed to do it, judging by the speed with which you shot your load and the amount of spunk you produced. In any case it's not the first time I've eaten a mouthful of cum but this one was willingly accepted and by far the nicest I have ever had!!"
Graeme was smiling broadly and Sam noticed that his teenage partner was still hard and presumably unsatisfied. For the first time in many years, the older man leaned down and gently took a cock into his mouth. Graeme had had a few sexual adventures both before he left home and afterwards but this was different. Sam was in no hurry and seemed to know exactly how to please and excite his young friend. Sam's tongue ran gently over the sensitive head of Graeme's uncut cock and slowly spread the slick pre-cum over it giving it a shiny appearance. As he ran his tongue down the underside of the shaft Sam paid particular attention to the frenum and was pleased when he heard Graeme's pleasured response. Sam easily took the whole length of Graeme's cock into his mouth and throat and worked him to the point of no return. Graeme shouted out that he was about to cum and Sam waited for his first taste of hot teenage ball cream in many years. He was not disappointed Graeme shot rope after rope of spunk into his mouth and Sam swallowed every drop with increasing delight. Satisfied at last Sam and Graeme returned to the living room knowing that the events of the past few minutes had changed their relationship forever. That night Graeme moved his belongings into Sam's bedroom and they remained lovers for the next six years. The age gap of twenty-five years or so never seemed to be an issue and both men enjoyed success both in their social life together and in their work. Graeme moved to a different department in Sam's business and continued to gain a reputation as a hard worker whose promotion was based on merit rather than favouritism. As his earnings grew, Graeme was able to acquire an even larger record collection and his knowledge of the contemporary music scene became wide-ranging.
In terms of their life together, the pair developed a close relationship which more than satisfied them both. Neither man was jealous of the other and they became more open in their association and went to gay venues together. From time to time each of them would seek a variation in their contented love life but each always confessed to the other and none of the affairs was ever serious. Sam recognised that as still a young man Graeme needed to have sex more often and in a more varied way than he did. For the younger man's twenty-first birthday Sam threw a party, at the conclusion of which an orgy took place from which both he and Graeme emerged exhausted but totally satisfied.
Their life seemed to be set on a path of happiness and contentment until tragedy struck. Sam was now an important executive with his company and was flying around the world on its behalf. It was an irony then that he should lose his life as a result of being knocked down on a pedestrian crossing only yards from his home. For two days his life hung in the balance before it was finally decided that he was beyond hope of recovery and the life support machine was switched off. Graeme was naturally deeply upset by these events but even more so by his sudden discovery that Sam had a family, none of which he had met in all the years they had been together. This was in its way bad enough but it was made worse by the fact that the family sought to exclude Graeme from any of the funeral arrangements. In accordance with his religious tradition Sam was buried as quickly as possible and Graeme only knew when and where the ceremony would take place a few minutes before it began. Thus, Sam had to grieve on his own and the devastation of the loss took its toll on him for several months thereafter. The one consolation - if such was the right word - was the news, which shocked Sam's family, that Sam had transferred ownership of the flat in trust for Graeme. This meant that by the age of twenty-five, Graeme was the owner of a substantial and valuable property in central London. He would be financially secure and could branch out on his own.
Graeme loved the house in London but the memories were too strong and he sold up and moved to a new apartment in another part of the city. He also decided to leave his full-time job and concentrate upon his other interests in music. Armed with a large collection of records and a very good knowledge of the contemporary music scene, Graeme set himself up as a mobile disco DJ. He started advertising locally but gradually acquired an agent and now had a business that enabled him to range freely around the UK, specialising in sessions at local gay pubs up and down the country. In the course of his travels Graeme found opportunities for casual sex with people he met while on his travels either on his journeys to the venues or, more often than not, after he had completed his night's work. He was a popular figure and much in demand and the only barriers to his doing the job he loved every night was the stamina needed to be on the road for long periods and his desire to return to London and relax in his apartment. In addition to touring Graeme also liked to play gigs in London and often held parties in his apartment after the show for anyone interested in continuing the fun (and having sex). In his own mind, although coming to terms with the loss of Sam was still something that he found difficult to accept, Graeme had come a long way from his wretched childhood and was doing better than he ever could have hoped for. He had money, he had a lovely home and he was young and attractive enough to be able to have sex whenever and with whomsoever he pleased.
This particular morning, Graeme had awoken alone - he had been having a weekend of recovery after spending the previous few weeks away in Manchester and Leeds. He had a gig later in the week in London itself and had decided that he needed a rest for a few days. He also needed time to organise the party he planned to hold after he finished his session on Saturday evening. There was food and drink to be acquired and a theme to be determined. Graeme rose lazily from the bed and admired his naked body in the various reflections from the mirrors before taking a shower. Since Sam's death, Graeme had found his sexual desires almost insatiable and in the absence of a partner he frequently wanked off alone. This morning was no exception. Standing under the streaming water, Graeme pumped his cock into hardness and then proceeded to bring himself off, shooting cum onto the tiled walls in front of him. As he wanked, he daydreamed of one sexual adventure or another but most often when alone he remembered the good times he had shared with Sam. Graeme was just drying himself and pulling on his clothes when the entry phone for his apartment rang. "Good morning, my name is Superintendent Martin Roberts of the Metropolitan Police. I am in charge of a murder investigation. Are you Graeme Adams? Would you mind answering a few questions?"
Graeme was somewhat taken aback by what he heard but instantly agreed to the policeman's request. He pressed the buzzer and waited until he heard the lift door open and then opened his own door to greet the most famous gay policemen in London. Martin Roberts was not as tall as Graeme had expected but was certainly good looking for his age. Graeme was attracted to older men as his time with Sam had proved and he found Martin a very attractive, if unattainable, prospect. He knew that he could not do anything about it not least because he was not yet ready for another relationship - it was too soon after Sam. Secondly, a guy as attractive as Martin probably already had a partner, even if he was a policeman. Anyway this was an official visit and a policeman as well known for his sense of duty as Martin Roberts would not be that distracted. Nevertheless there was something about Martin that made his blood flow quicker.
The younger man held the front door opens and ushered Martin into the apartment. Martin knew nothing of Graeme and was surprised at how young he was to be owning a place like the one he lived in. He also noted that the young DJ was nervous. In addition, although firmly settled with his partner Tom and on official business Martin found Graeme to be strangely magnetic and sexually very appealing. He knew that as a policeman such thoughts were unacceptable but he equally realised that if he was to meet Graeme in less formal circumstances he might well find the chance of even a one night stand, or better still a threesome with Tom a not unappealing prospect. However, he was here to investigate a murder
"Well, superintendent, I'm pleased to meet you, I've heard a lot about you. You are much respected in the gay community as you know. Can I offer you a drink before we start?"
"Thank you, no, Mr Adams", replied Martin, "if you don't mind I'd like to go right ahead with my questions, please."
Graeme nodded, again looking a little nervous Martin thought.
"You say you're investigating a murder. Of course I'd be delighted to help if I can but I don't see how."
Martin proceeded to explain the circumstances of the two murders to date and that, in an effort to find some link between the two, they had discovered that Graeme had been in charge of the disco on each occasion. This information had been gleaned from Graeme's agent. Having explained further the circumstances of each crime, Martin then produced photographs of the victims.
"Mr Adams, I'd like you to look at these photos and tell me whether you recognise them? Did you see them on the night in question and did you see them in the company of anyone else on that night?"
Graeme took hold of the photographs, his hand shaking slightly as he did so, Martin noted. Graeme studied the pictures intently for several minutes, maybe too long he wondered as he slowly put them down.
"I'm sorry, superintendent, I don't recognise either person in these photos. I certainly never met them and I'm pretty sure I did not see them on the nights you mentioned. I wish I could help but there is nothing I can tell you that will be of assistance. The disco was very crowded on both nights and I was concentrating on getting a good mixture of music. I do sometimes talk to the people at the disco but never these two. Not that night, not ever. Sorry."
"That's Ok, Mr Adams. We are following every lead we can to try to find this killer and to be frank we haven't got very far. You were a kind of possible link but if you do not know these people then the trail goes cold again. Here's my card if you do think of anything or see anyone or anything that you think might help, please let me know."
"I will, superintendent. May I keep copies of these photos? I will ask around and see if anyone else I know has anything to contribute to your investigation."
Martin nodded and replied,
"Of course keep the photos and ask your friends. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Oh yes, one last thing before I go, when is your next engagement?" "I've got a gig coming up here in London on Saturday night. I'll send you the details if you like. You might even want to come, in case our murderer is following my disco around the country."
"yes please send me the details and I'm sure someone will look in if they can. In the meantime I think that's all for today so thank you for your time."
"That's fine, pleased to be of assistance and sorry I could not help more because, like you, I do want to get this killer caught as soon as possible. It's a bad business."
Martin left and walked down the stairs thinking to himself that he was not sure how sincere Graeme's last comment had been. Did he mean it was a bad business or bad for business? Martin wondered as he walked to the car.
Back at the Yard, the Commander looked in on Martin,
"Any progress?"
"No, sir. I think Graeme Adams - the DJ at both the venues, is probably in the clear. Claims never to have met or seen either victim, but I won't rule him out completely just yet. He's the only person we definitely know was at both venues. But that is the only bit we've got and there may be others who were at both venues, including the killer."
"I agree, but don't eliminate him entirely from your enquiries."
Martin nodded sagely and turned his thoughts to whether to have a presence for all or part of the proceedings on the following Saturday. He was pretty certain that Graeme Adams was not ruthless enough, or physically strong enough, to have carried out the murders although he would continue background checks on him. Whoever the killer was he was strong, agile and full of extreme anger either against gays in general or certain gays in particular. Martin knew that if he could at least find what linked the two victims it would open up another and possibly more effective line of investigation. However, as he confessed to Tom, when they lay contentedly together in bed later that evening, he could not, at that moment think of any link at all. Above all he hoped that he could find a link and solve the mystery before the killer struck again. As Tom slept peacefully beside him, Martin lay awake turning over the evidence so far but each time he reached the same conclusion: they really did not have any real clues and no leads. As finally sleep came, Martin hoped that he would have the time to make a breakthrough. It was now Wednesday, if Graeme had been right about the killer following his disco, or worse, if Graeme was the killer, he only had until Saturday to make the breakthrough. Martin hoped against hope that he would succeed, but time was short. Too short as things turned out.
