I'd been teaching high school social studies for only three years when things in my life changed dramatically. Our school was located in a section of Washington DC that had undergone gentification recently. The once black neighborhood had been renovated and turned into a mixed area with a new , younger, and very gay neighbors. In order to keep the newly renovated school filled, the boundaries had been extended to include areas across the river, including many public housing projects. Special programs had been installed in the school, including a new sports center open to the entire community. My job had been saved only because I'd accepted the additional responsibilities as an assistant track coach. The coach was an older man in his late sixties. His seniority made it impossible to move or retire him. It was no big deal for me. I'd been on my univerity track team and was pretty familiar with the sport. My new duties included working with the team on early morning runs. I also handled all of the paperwork that the coach hated. I was also in charge of the weight room during the late afternoon. Often we were joined by a few commumity members.
In the early spring one of the community members suggested that I might consider taking the track team to the Marine Track and Field competions at Quantico. I thought it was a great idea. The students would get to see a really well trained group of men demonstrating the skills we'd been attempting to develop. I brought the idea up to various school officials and it was well received. I called the Marine base to get permission to bring twelve to fourteen students down on Friday, the first day of the competition. Permission slips were sent out to to parents. The first fourteen returned would be on the trip.
The day went well for us. At noon, after a quick lunch at school, we pilled into a yellow school bus and headed down for the hour's ride to the base. The boys were escorted by Marine officers and the 2 coaches. Once on base each member of our team was given a Marine t-shirt and taken to the field for the games. All went as planned. I was happy to see the enthusiasm of my boys. I sat in the stands and watched the boys mingle with the young Marine athletes. Around 5PM we were invited to the mess hall for a meal. I'd thought I'd seen my boys destroy food before. But with the encouragement of the Marines they set a new record. Looking around the mess hall I noticed that the guys were paired off with various Marine buddies. The coach and I were escorted to the officers' mess. I was surrounded by tall, fit marine officers. They were all very welcoming to us. We talked about training routines, teaching, and the "Marine Way". Afterwards, we thanked them and boarded our bus for home. The well stuffed boys were sound asleep by the time we pulled out onto the highway.
The next few weeks were busy at the school. The end of the year's city wide track events were fast approaching. The boys were pumped up for this competition. Late one afternoon I was in the athletic office handling paperwork when I got a call from the main office telling me that a Marine officer was there to talk to me. They sent him down into my basement office. He introduced himself as Captain Jed Campbell from the commandant's office. Over coffee he told me of the great impression my boys had made on their visit to the base. It seems the commandant had heard of our efforts and decided that we might fit perfectly with the community outreach program. He went on to explain the program's goals. We seem to fit in well with their program. We talked for 20 minutes before i decided to call in for more help. I called to the JROTC director for our school inviting him to join us and suggesting that he get the assistant principal, the AP, to come down with him to my office. Soon the four of us were deep into a discussion of the program. It was now after 4PM and I suggested that we meet at my apartment to continue. I lived not far from the school and close to the main Marine barracks, in fact 3 blocls away from it just on the edge of the gentrified area. Giving everyone my address, I asked the AP to call an old friend of mine in the superintendant's office to give them the heads up on our project. I'd biked into work that morning so we planned to meet at my place in 30 minutes.
We all arrived and got down to work. Just as we got settled, Sue, my friend from the main office called. She told me that her boss approved of our general plan and appointed her to follow through. She'd be at my place shortly. I explained to the group that we had the go ahead from the main office and that Sue would arrive shortly. Being used to working in a classroom, I had installed a white board in my dining room for my lesson planning. We decided to plan there. As we got settled, the four of us, my doorbell rang. Sue walked in carrying 2 pizzas and a case of beer, compliments of the Superintendant. For the next 4 hours we worked on the details of the planned program. Jed and Sue, knowing the ways of bureacracy, were able to quickly fill in details that the rest of us were unaware of. In the end, near 9PM, we'd worked up a pretty good presentation to put before our civilian and military bosses. As everyone got a copy of the proposed program, Sue pulled me aside to say "You know if this works out your time in the classroom will soon end. I'll propose that you come downtown this summer to work with us on this and other issues. I've watched you before and I know a leadership talent when I see one." I protested that I loved the vitality of the classroom. Jed stayed behind after the others had left. Over beers we sat at the dining room table looking at the white board. Finally, he spoke up "I couldn't help but hear Sue's comment to you and she's right. We could use a man with your talents to work with the commandant's office. So if you ever want a change just let me know." I sat stunned at both suggestions. Jed watched me for a few minutes and spoke up "You know that I've only just met you. But I already know that you have a magnetic affect on people, particularly me." He leaned over placing his hands on the sides of my head pulling me towards his face. He kissed me gently with an affection I'd not experienced before. I responded by holding on to his shoulder, letting his tongue explore my mouth. He pulled away, embarressed saying "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done that." I stuttered "Why not, if you really meant it?"
Jed got up from hs chair, walked over to stand in front of me. His strong hands lifted me from my seat to face him. He whispered "I meant it." Again he pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss. We struggled for dominence with each other as we stripped off each other's clothing. That night Jed took me to places my body had not known existed. His thick 8 inches filled me repeatedly during the night. I could only attribute his stamina to his physical training as a marine. I fell asleep with Jed cuddled spooning behind me in my bed. I'd seldom been more sexually satisfied. The next day, Saturday, we spent the entire day naked in my apartment. Jed returned to base only to change into civies and we had a quiet, romantic dinner at a country inn in rural Virginia. Sunday rolled around too quickly, Jed had to return but promised that he'd call and also keep me in the loop on the project. I missed him that night. But the memories of the previous night kept me warm.
Ten days after we'd first met were filled with work and texts from both Sue and Jed telling me of the progress of our project. I saw Jed three times in that period. Once he met with school officials at my building to iron our details. The other two times we met at my place for more intimate plans. Finally, the day the project's start came, at 2 PM a Marine van pulled into the school's parking lot followed by Jed and a staff member. Introductions were made and the staff member began taking photos as the marines and our boys began working out together. There were 6 Marines, one or two I'd remmebered from the competition earlier. For the final 4 weeks of the school year the marines and boys worked together to develop skills. The marines turned out in full force for the city wide competition, 15 of them. They provided a needed cheering section for my boys. We took 5 of the 6 golds that day. I was proud of my team and our new marine trainers. At the awards ceremony, the superintendant showed up to present the prizes. Afterwards, he pulled me aside and asked about my plans for the summer. I told him that I had only a few weekends planned. Smiling he said "Well then your weekdays are free?" I nooded yes. He continued "Then you're available to help me with some programs?" I thought for a moment, Jed and I had planned a trip to a gay resort for the holiday weekend but so far that was all. I said "I'm free most of the time." He clapped me on the back saying only "Good to hear." That night over another intimate dinner in the country I told Jed of the proposed work. He smiled and said "I told you so."
During the summer Jed and I spent every free moment together. He even invited me to Phidelphia to meet his folks. That was a big step for me , meeting a boy friend's parents. I was nervous on the train ride up. Jed assured me that everything would be fine. His parents long ago figured out that he was gay and accepted him. He knew that they'd love me. I had my own doubts about that. But he was right. They were a very liberal couple. They made sure that I was at ease, even giving us Jed's old room with a queen size bed to sleep in. We made good use of that bed. Jed's father, a lawyer, introduced us to members of his club as a couple. His mother insisted on me meeting her friends too. On the train ride back on Sunday I told Jed that I loved him. His reaction was not what I'd expected. He smiled at me saying "So what else is new? I figured out that I loved you the first day we met." I held his hand tight and began to cry silently as the train rolled through the countryside. Seeing my tears Jed whispered "Are you OK?" I leaned in to say "Better than Ok, Jed."
Should I continue the story? The summer had many unexpected twists for these 2.
