Chapter 56

March Stephenson

Maxieplus

The screaming was high-pitched when he arrived back from playgroup, between him and Sunny the noise levels were deafening as they ran in circles. March sat him on the seat, belted him up then switched the speed to low. Sunny was placed next to him and he barked more with excitement. If my boy tooted the horn once he tooted it twenty times or more. His legs were everywhere until his dad showed him how to use it, he also had bought him a helmet and he is to wear that every time he goes for a drive. He took off slowly and that was the end of my day, circles were done and after many laps of the workshop, he stopped near where dad was watching and screamed.

"Oil peeze."

Dad went through the motions and then he waved him goodbye. We had to go across the road to show mum and Rose and he was instructed not to go on the road without us. He looked at his tools and fixed a squeak then he wanted to go up the street which his dad took him. I heard shouting and a few bangs, I think Mase was running into everyone and everything on the way. When they came back he congratulated him on getting his license.

"I will teach him properly at home Nicky, it's already got a scrape on the bumper."

"Maybe some foam rubber might stop it from being destroyed."

"I have some in the workshop and will do just that when we get back, what's for lunch?"

"We are having corned beef today March."

"Really?"

"Yes, mum has added it to her list."

"Where is May?"

"Out the back changing Rosie."

He took his phone out and sent her a message, a swift reply was read.

'I know.'

"She knows." He giggled.

"Tell her it's sold out," I said.

"Why would I say that Nicky? that's an awful thing to say to May."

"Sorry March." I slunk down in my seat and shut up.

While Mase played mechanic with his little car Sunny rested on the driver's seat, Rose came out with a bucket of soapy water and she showed him how to wash it.

"Have we any news on Cory's tournament?"

"Yes Nicky, next weekend do you want me to organise the tickets?"

"Yes thank you Rose," May had come out and made a fuss over the car, Mason wanted to take little Rosie for a ride but that wasn't going to happen anytime soon.

"I have heard from Dr Mike and he got our tickets for the showroom, so the tennis tournament and show are on the same day. March have you booked the hotel?"

"Yes May I am very much looking forward to our big holiday." He smiled.

"I had better start packing then, what time does the tennis games start?"

"Around ten in the morning, I believe they finish around four." Rose offered.

"The show starts at nine Nicky so it will be a late night."

"March do you think we should find a babysitter for the weekend?"

"No Nicky, he comes with us."

"It might be a late night though."

"He will be fine with the hotel's baby sitter."

"What do we do with Sunny?"

"It's all organised don't fuss. Ron's going to take him for the night."

"Okay, I hope he doesn't get stressed."

"Why would he get stressed?"

"Maybe he won't then." I shut up again.

"So when you know what we are doing you will inform me?"

"That is what I am doing now Nicky, keep up."

"How is that lump in your pants going then?"

"Not yet Nicky, I have food to eat."

Lunch was nice and him and May almost destroyed mum's reserves. Mason had something to eat and Sunny napped. I had better keep up with them all because March is only giving me the bare basics of what we are doing on the weekend.

The car had to be recharged and Mason watched the dial, it was a slow process. We didn't make it to the shed but there is always the hot tub when we get home. As soon as the car was unpacked at home, the little car was taken to the backyard. March showed him more safety stuff and had even set up a makeshift traffic light so he could teach him some road rules. I made sure we had something out for dinner, it will be a barbeque tonight. After doing some tidying up I dropped everything and got in the tub, from where I sat I could see father and son doing laps of the yard.

The playhouse was the best to store the car and the reverse parking was attempted many times until Mason decided to just park it front end first. The electrical lead was rolled out and it was once again filling with gas. Eventually, they both came to find me. March had his shorts down and was stepping into the water with bub in his arms. More playing, then a well overdue splashing with his oversized ducks and some other toys that he decided would float.

"What are we having for dinner?"

"Barbeque."

"Give me five minutes and I will light it."

"No time for me today?"

"Plenty of time for you Nicky... oh, you mean sex?"

I frowned and he laughed.

"You have it bad today Nicholas Stephenson."

"And you don't?" He thought about it and then he attacked me.

For the next few days that Jeep seemed to be forever on charge, Mason was glued to it and the tantrums he created when it needed 'gas' were horrendous. Thank God we had a few hours when he was at play school, his life had become much busier, and his naps nearly non existant.

One of the hardest things for him to do was to say goodbye to it and Sunny before we left for the city on Friday. He had packed some of his mates toys and made sure his blanket went with him, then he gave Ron a rundown on what he liked to eat. The jeep was tucked away in his cubby, and March had thrown a blanket over it. Two sad goodbyes and all I could hear were car noises coming from the back seat until he dropped off to sleep. March let me drive this time, he didn't think he would cope with the city traffic, especially on a Friday.

"Now you are going to behave yourself when we get to the hotel Nicky?" I almost laughed myself silly as I pulled into the sweeping drive.

I didn't bother to answer him and after the bags stroller and our boy were unloaded, March then turned his attention to the parking attendant.

"Not one word out of you March Stephenson."I grabbed him.

"But...."

"No buts, get inside and check us in." I winked at the guy who took my keys.

No Bradley today, we have a new check-in guy Robert. March was disappointed that he wasn't working today because he knew what he wanted.

"Would you like your roasts delivered, or will you be dining in the restaurant Mr. Stephenson?" That threw him.

"Nicky, what do you think?"

"In the room please Robert, and a small dish of veggies and gravy for the baby would be nice also."

"I will have it sent up, same room Mr Stephenson and we are all very happy to have you back as our guest."

The check-in process was very pleasant and it threw March off his game. The porter was the same kid and he once again kept smiling at us, so March gave him a nudge.

"Drive the lift, don't perve on my husband."

"Yes, Mr Stephenson, and welcome back." He couldn't hold his laughter any longer as he almost pissed himself. March gave him a big tip after he carried our bags to the room, I had Mason and the stroller.

I placed him on the bed and March headed for the big windows, he wanted some more photos.

By the time I unpacked the food had arrived and Mase was waking up.

"Hurry up Nicky, I'm starving."

"I doubt that you would ever starve March, you seem to be always surrounded by food." I smiled, then got Mase into his high chair.

In between feeding his face and sending photos to May I got some food into bub. He was insisting I ring Sunny to see how he was, then he wanted to tell his furry friend all about his trip to the city, so we rang Ron.

I cleaned up while March did that chore for him, and it was deemed that the puppy was well and truly happily playing with his new doggie friends. May and Jason knocked and Mase headed their way for cuddles. Little Rosie was awake so I got to nurse her for a while, that was until March wanted some photos of him and bub looking out the windows.

"What are you up to tonight Jase?"

"We were going to catch up with mum, but I think we will have an early night."

"Don't make any plans Nicky." I heard.

"I'm not, I was only asking."

"Well I have plans of my own and they don't include May and Jason."

"Oh, I see." They started laughing and he came over.

"Please do not have dirty thoughts around the children, and what you're thinking is wrong."

"Well what are you doing tonight?" May asked.

"Can't say."

"I see." She giggled.

Mum and Dad came by and had Rose in tow, she was off to a club with Hank and Tom and my folks are having dinner at the hotel, then early to bed.

Mason and Rosie were handed around and drinks were served, because March had found out the little bottles in the fridge come at a cost, he is now armed with a bottle of scotch and a couple of sodas. We only had one each, then Rose had to go and shower, and mum and dad were getting hungry. We said our good nights after deciding we would all get a tram to the tournament, that will give Mason a different sort of ride.

"Now I have you alone March, what are we doing tonight?"

"Staying in Nicky, and we are going to watch the sunset, then make love." I shuddered with anticipation.

We decided that we weren't hungry so he opened a bag of crisps instead, he and Mason sat on the sofa and started watching a movie. I think they were discussing a full service for the jeep, but I couldn't be sure. I went to shower and then snuggled up with them, the pre-lovemaking started about then as he kissed my head and licked my neck. After twenty minutes Mase had fallen asleep and March was balls deep inside me, he never fails to excite me that man of mine.

The next morning Rose had the expected hangover and the rest of the crowd were dressed and ready to go. Little Rosie couldn't go so she was placed in the babysitting room and it was Jason's turn to tell the lady all about his daughter's likes and dislikes. Mason will behave himself he always does so I wasn't worried about taking him, after all, it will be a family sort of day. We found it hard on the tram because Mase wouldn't sit down and stay calm, he ran up and down, jumped on the seats, and had his nose to the window for most of the journey. Many familiar faces greeted us after shuffling through the entrance gate, it seemed like the whole town had converged on the arena, well a lot of them anyway. There was a childminding area with games and toys that Mase would love, and the four adults got a good talking to from March before we left him.

I was nervous for Cory and worried about our son this is unknown territory and leaving him with virtual strangers didn't sit well with me. After a half hour of watching a game, I went to get him.

"Come on baby, Cory will be playing soon."

"Good time Daddy."

"I know you did, but I missed you."

"Weally?"

"Yes."

I sat him on my knees and he laid back while we watched another game then Cory walked onto the court to a welcome roar from the crowd, he bowed.

Three full games later he received a standing ovation from all of us, photos were taken and a very nice cup was placed in his hands. All this took time and he handled himself perfectly to take out the one-day title. Mase had fallen asleep and as soon as we were able to we headed for the hotel.

No tram ride back just a taxi this time, March was still hungry after the two hot dogs he had, so we ordered up roast chicken, a still groggy boy lay on the sofa in front of the TV, and after the late lunch I went to have a nap with my husband who by the way wanted to mirror last nights lovemaking.

It had been a big day and it wasn't going to get any better because we had a show to catch tonight. I more than once wished we were back at home up the hills, and when I mentioned it March felt the same.

"Nicky, I only come here because of you."

"Really? because I am beginning to think it's because of the roasts."

"No Nicky, you are a city boy and I want you to be happy wherever we are."

"I'm happier at home March, I even married a local so I would fit in."

"That's not the reason you married me."

"No, but I love that town more than this city, and I love you more."

"Good." He smiled and snuggled into me.

"Let's just get this weekend over and done with then we can get back to being country folk again."

He didn't hear me because he had gone to sleep.

It was seven when we woke up and Mase was in bed with us, our troop arrived by eight and after dressing we dropped the two kids at the hotels nursery. March as usual looked awesome and I was happy to have him hanging off my arm all night. Cabs were taken and I sent a message to Dr Mike that we were on our way.

He said he would meet us out the front of the venue, which he did. We met his husband Grant and I did notice March give his ass a second look, he was awesome. The showroom was huge and as we all walked in once again hands were shaken town folks were hugged and everyone was on a high. Our table was filled to the max. Faith and Ethan were waiting for us with Hank, Tom, and Jimmy. Faith indicated that March and I were sitting next to them and I said my hellos to all then sat next to my friend. The music wasn't loud but I was certain it will be turned up as the night progressed. A young man walked up to our table and knelt to talk to May, her chair slipped back and she took his hands then they hugged, I have no idea what that was all about. So many familiar faces, so much love in that room, and of course a big hand rested on my crotch he was having a good feel. Food started to arrive and sure enough plates of roast beef were placed on the table.

March looked at mum and they both agreed it was too well-seasoned, I guess they can't get it right all the time.

I mingled and talked to many friends about the game today, I found out that Jack and Cory wouldn't be coming they were in talks with the tennis association at an after-tournament dinner. I prayed Cory would stick to the one career, and all the people I talked to felt the same way. I was making my way back to the table when someone took my arm, it was Grant Dr Mikes's husband.

"I have March waiting for you if you would like to follow me please Nicky."

I followed that awesome ass to the right-hand side of the stage and then we were let into the back rooms. March was standing there smiling and he grabbed me, he doesn't like it when I go off on my own.

"What's happening?" I asked but was looking at Grant.

"Conner wants to meet you before the show." I panicked.

"No, I'm not ready to meet stars."

"You will be fine, he's a normal guy and loves a joke so don't get nervous."

We went through two doors and into a dressing room, he was sitting at a makeup table talking to the same guy that had been talking to May.

He stood up and Grant introduced us, I was speechless but March took it all in his stride.

"This is my husband Brent and I have to thank you right from the start for having a brilliant sister March. His hand is a lot better since he's been on her tea." He smiled, I swooned.

"That's okay, she's very popular and I think she is very smart."

"Brent talk to Nicky about the kids I believe you guys have a little one at home."

"Yes Mason." I stuttered out and wanted to drop to my knees.

"We have three, twins and our eldest boy Teddy he's our pride and joy

(Rick Conners and his gang are the main characters in my book Ask Me)

"Not your other sons?"

"Of course they are, one's a bit shy and the other is a know it all." Conner cracked up laughing.

"He's a little encyclopedia, he questions everything and we love him dearly for it," Brent said.

"Well Mason is our pride and joy, he's going to be a mechanic just like his dad."

March puffed up.

"We will come to the hills one day and meet him, in the meantime, it's been good to meet you both. I have to apologize for what's coming but I hope you take it all in its stride." Conner smiled at a very confused husband of mine.

We were shown back to our seats and March handed his phone to May, she screamed as she flicked through the many photos he had taken of our visit backstage. The tables had been cleared and the lights went down.

"What did he apologize for Nicky?" March asked.

"I don't know March, maybe he's going to fuck you later on."

"He wouldn't do that Nicky, don't be so awful to me."

The music began in earnest and we could hardly hear ourselves talking. It all changed when the dancers came on stage and the screams started when Conner appeared in his signature shorts and tank top. He was an excellent dancer and he humped his way through the first two songs with ease. The house was rocking as he changed on stage to evening pants but no top, his chest was awesome.

Three more rock songs then he went into crooner mode and sat on a stool and sang his most popular love songs. I knew he was singing to Brent, and I also knew the songs were written for him. March dropped a tear and then wiped it away, I knew what he was feeling and I felt the same.

There was a break in the show and drinks were ordered.

"He's awesome Nicky, I love that song Us, I have always loved it."

"Me too March, he wrote it for Brent."

"How do you know?"

"I read it in a gay magazine baby, if you like I can set you up with the site that almost tells you all about their lives, Brent had a bad time years ago and Conner is his greatest fan."

"That would be good, thank you Nicky."

"You are welcome."

"No thank you for being with me, and I think that song is about us."

"It is baby."

He came out in a dinner suit, still looking amazing as his shoulder-length dark wavey hair shimmered in the lights.

"This next song I didn't write, but I think it sums up what people are feeling, especially over the past months. The devastating bushfires here in Victoria and the New South Wales mountain fires. Some good people lost their lives and some became heroes, tonight we are celebrating those heroes." The music started and I recognized the tune from the Sydney Olympics ceremony, Vanessa Amorissi's Hero's Live Forever. The background began to change and big giant-sized photos were being beamed onto a screen that had suddenly appeared. The photos were of the bushfires and the men that fought them, the one main photo that kept flashing was March's farm one. There were others and March wasn't the only hero, all the men were. The song filled me with so much pride and emotion. Conner hit the high notes like a professional and I couldn't imagine how exhausting it would be to sing that song. It finished on a long note and then he bowed, the audience gave him a standing ovation, that didn't die down for many more minutes.

"Ladies and gentlemen I give you one hero tonight, March Stephenson." The spotlight was fair and square on March, I heard.

"Nicky?"

"Just stand up and wave baby."

He did what I told him and the room noise was defining. He sat down heavily and grabbed a serviette, he was feeling the love tonight.

"Do you all want to do a sexy dance with me?" The crowd roared yes.

Conner strutted all over that stage like he was selling his body on the streets, it was so sexy, and more than once March grabbed my crotch to play with my stiffy.

An awesome night for us all, and the dancing was even better as March slow trotted me around the dance floor.

He was eager to get back to the hotel to check on Mason but the press wanted a lot of photos and a few interviews, it was all about safety with March as I sat and listened, but he did mention me and Mase a few times.

We didn't get to go backstage again and I did hear that Conner left shortly after the show, he had kids to kiss goodnight. I did see Gianni and Antonio from the market having a long passionate kiss on the dance floor, but it was that sort of night where everyone was doing their own thing, so we didn't have time to say hello. On the way back to the hotel, March was humming that song I knew he was happy and even happier when we picked Mase up, who was fast asleep. We placed him in his bed and then we tried to wind down with a bit of sex. A big night and a few shocks made him tired, so in the end we decided that our bed performance wasn't up to scratch so we went to sleep.

Mason was in bed with us in the morning and March was telling him how much we missed him amongst the many kisses he was receiving and giving.

"What a great night March we will have to come again soon."

"Yes it was good, Nicky can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Can we forego the zoo and just go home instead?"

"Can't wait baby, there's no place like home."

"Good, because I want to get back to normal again. And Nicky?"

"Yes, husband?"

"Don't think for one minute I don't know you didn't have a hand in last night's performance."

"Why would you say that?"

"You always do things like that to me." He looked at me and smiled, busted big time...again.

The family arrived and Mase collected his hugs and kisses, then we all went down for breakfast. March was handed two newspapers and a congratulatory handshake from just about all the staff that were in today. The news had a large photo of March and how he had caused a sensation at the Rick Conners concert, something we didn't know was that Conner had donated the proceeds from the night to the country fire authority. There were photos of Conner on stage and of course March's farm one featured along with some great ones that were taken after the event.

"How does it feel to be a celebrity brother," May asked him.

"Drop it May."

"But I have more to say." She started laughing, he looked sideways at her and said.

"Shut it. You should be talking to your brother-in-law about his sneaky surprise for us all last night." That got all of us going and I denied having rang anyone to do with the show. After breakfast March dropped the bombshell that we would be going home soon, May and Jason would be going to his parent's place, and mum and dad will be following us with Rose.

We checked out and took our expected takeaway meals, they were sad to see us go but we reassured them once again we would be back.

The drive home was smooth as usual, Mason fell asleep and so did March as he cuddled him in the back seat. Rose sat with me in the front and soon enough she was snoring her head off. I helped her to her front door and March got in the front seat with me, he dropped his head back and I think he wanted to talk but was leaving it until we got back home. We unloaded the car and took everything inside, the roasts were placed in the fridge, and bags were unpacked. Mason wanted to go and pick Sunny up so they headed for Rons. I sat and had coffee then looked through the hundreds of photos of last night on the local page, I also read some wonderful comments about Conner's tribute number.

Grant had rang me last week and wanted to know all about March's involvement and his medal, Conner wanted to honour the firemen in his show. All I did was send him some nice photos and a small history of what had happened, so sue me, I know he is a hero.

They crashed into the hallway and Sunny headed my way for a cuddle and a scratch then Mason was entertaining him by chasing him into the bedrooms. Mum rang we will have Chinese tonight as usual, she and dad will pick it up on the way.

March hovered for a minute then he sat with me.

"I didn't want any of this Nicky."

"I know, let's just put it behind us and get on with it, ok?"

"Okay, but I wanted to let you know I am happy, but also embarrassed he did that, it wasn't necessary."

"It was his choice March, I think he wanted to do more for the fire brigade than making you the centre of attention, but you are a hero to a lot of people," He smiled.

"I was thinking that it's has been a really bad year for all the guys."

"Have you read the local page yet?"

"No, I will have a look later on."

"Jeep Daddy."

"Not now, rest baby."

"No, jeep Daddy we go drive." The lip dropped.

I rolled my eyes and I guess our son knows what he's doing.

March got up and went to get it out of the cubby house, he then placed the helmet on Mase's head and settled Sunny in beside him. I could hear the car noises he was making from where I sat.

"He's getting good at driving Nicky."

"He will lose interest when he outgrows it."

"But for now he's a good driver."

"I agree."

One hour later he ran out of gas, mum and dad had arrived and Mase jumped on Dad's knees and said.

"Gas please."

"How much?"

"Lots poppy and tires too. I needs tires." Dad made sure the jeep was plugged in and then he stuck a brick under one side to check the tyres.

"All good bub, charging good and tires good."

"Thank you." He then ran off with Sunny to explore the property again.

Mum opened the food and March loaded up on Chinese, I cut up some of it for our son, then called him for dinner. Sunny sat silently under the table and we all dropped food.

"It was a great weekend son, boy that Rick Conners can sing."

"It was mum, but there's no place like home." I looked sideways at March, he nodded in agreement.

"Have you much in this week March?"

"Not a lot Nicky, I think I will be spending some time with our son, he has to know all the road rules."

"He's still a baby March, don't be too overbearing," Dad said.

"Maybe I won't then, you can do it dad."

"Why don't you take him and the jeep out to the farm, there's plenty of room there for him to explore."

"Maybe I will then." March is certainly having a tug-of-war with himself tonight.

Mase was readied for bed and if he kissed his car goodnight once he did it ten times. It was parked inside the cubby and when mum and dad went home, March and I sat in the tub, well, we fooled around in the tub.

We both slept soundly and he received his good morning suck while Mase played in his room. He laid back and sighed.

"What's up, you have been a bit distracted the last few days?"

"Nothing Nicky it was something that was said at the concert."

"What was said?"

"One of the reporters was asking me if I was going into the film business, like become a movie star."

"And are you?" He looked at me and laughed.

"Of course not, why would I do that?"

I laughed. Mase came in to talk to him and I went to put the coffee on. Sunny had followed me out and he sat there until I placed some food into his bowl. I took March's drink into him and they were talking about taking his jeep to Joel's place to have the scrapes fixed and a total respray, he wants blue this time to match his dad's truck.

When they came out for breakfast March checked his phone.

"I don't know how they got a hold of my phone number Nicky, but I have several messages from talent agents wanting to set up a meeting with me."

"Show me." He handed the phone over and I read them.

I have been here before and this isn't going to happen. I deleted the lot and handed it back.

"There, done."

"Thank you I didn't know what to do, but I probably should have answered them."

"No need March, I think we should go into silent mode on that subject. If you answer them they will know they have the right number and will pester you." It was after we arrived at work and Mase was driving around the workshop that March was called to Mays cafe. A meeting with Brenda had been set up and something itched at the back of my neck, so I followed with the kids across the road to listen in.

"Good morning Brenda how are you?" I stared at her.

"Good Nicky, March." She grabbed Mase and popped him on her knees.

"I like your new car baby, does it go fast?"

He shook his head from side to side and said.

"No."

"We are keeping it to low speed for now, just until he gets used to it," March said.

Coffees were ordered and May appeared to have one with us.

"So why the meeting?" I asked.

"You are a very suspicious person, Nicholas Stephenson, we will have to be careful in the future March."

"I'm always with him, spill the beans." I smiled nicely.

"Okay, and this isn't up for discussion on the local page boys." She stared at me again.

"The country fire association is going to make some ads to be run just before next fire season, Australia wide and they want March to feature in them."

"No,"

"You have no option March, you're the face of the campaign, a camera crew will follow you around for a week or so, no arguments." I heard May giggle.

"I won't do it Brenda, Nicky just deleted eight offers for stardom off my phone I don't do those sort of things. I do cars."

"You are the fire chief March and you must speak for it when called upon."

He looked at me and said.

"Talk to her Nicky, I have work to do." He got up then walked across the road, all eyes were on his butt. Brenda sighed then looked at me.

"Leave me out of it, but I know he won't do it."

"He has to, he's got the looks and personality the producers want, and he will be paid handsomely for his time."

"He should do it Nicky, for his men and everyone's safety." May put her ten cents worth in.

"I'll talk to him, it's not about the ads with March its about Matt and me. He knows that he destroyed my life trying to get to Hollywood and he doesn't want me involved in that industry ever again."

"It's hardly Hollywood Nicky, it's a government run of fire danger ads."

"I know, but this is where it starts for March, a few ads then a cameo in a TV series, a few modelling jobs then he's out there for good, no more garage, too much TV work. He sees that and he doesn't like it one bit, you know what he is like Brenda he wouldn't cope."

"Then we will convince him to only do a few ads then." Sometimes I could throttle her for being so pushy.

"I will only promise to talk to him, if he doesn't want to do them then there is nothing I can do about it."

"Show him your ass then, I need him to do it." She laughed.

"Are they donating to the council if you seal the deal?"

"No, and you know I don't go along with things like that, I just think it will be good for him. It will give him more confidence and the tools to cope with anything that's thrown at him."

"Like me." I lifted my eyebrows. Both her and May laughed. I grabbed our son and his dog then said my goodbyes.

Mason ran for his car and Sunny was on the seat beside him in no time. March was bent over an engine tinkering with it, so I leaned into him and whispered in his ear.

"You're not doing it, end of."

"I know Nicky, but we can find someone that will do it and I have the perfect subjects in mind."

"Who?"

"Nudge, Ron, and Joel they are heroes also."

"Do you think they will go for it?"

"Yes, if I tell them to do it." He grinned.

"You might be missing out on a great career opportunity March."

"I have a career, doing cars and looking after my family."

"This is why you are perfect for the ads, no bull, simple country beef with high values." He stared at me for some time.

"Dad look after Mase." He grabbed my hand and we ended up in the shed, I can now show him why I loved him so much.
