I realised that I had not given Ben an adequate description yet, so here it is. Ben stands about 5'6, 110 lbs, golden brown eyes, sandy blonde hair that is almost brown when not in much light, but glows blonde in direct sunlight. He is thin, with very little muscle and barely an ounce of fat.
Magicks of the Mind Chapter 3 - Sorrowful Sunday I arrived at my dorm 2 hours before my parents were due. They lived about 3 hours away, and I knew that they would waste no time in getting ready to come see me. I jumped in the shower, to rid myself of the club smells. Personally, the stench of cigarette smoke on my clothing is revolting. I got out of the shower, making sure I no longer smelt like smoke or alcohol and got dressed. Once I got out I realized I had been in the shower for an entire hour. "Damn. I must have fallen asleep or something." I say to myself. "I could swear I was only there for a few minutes to rinse off." I look around my room and start cleaning up. There was an entire trash bag full of soda cans alone. Not to mention the fast food bags stuffed into my trashcan which was overflowing. Finally, once I collected all my clothes scattered across the floor. I still had 30 minutes until my parents were to arrive. I sat down at my computer, expecting to surf the web for a few minutes when I hear a familiar knock at my door, my fathers. Getting up and walking towards the door I asked myself "Will I ever get a few seconds to relax again!?" I open the door to see my father looking at me quizzically. He said "Not bloody likely!" "Who are you talking to dad?" I asked, noticing my mom isn't at my door yet. "Oh... No one son." He says nervously. "You're mom will be up shortly" "Alright." I said. After a minute or two my mom arrived and we went inside. "Is your roommate home?" my mother asked. "Uhhh... I don't know?" I answered. She closed her eyes and sighed then re-opened her eyes. "He's not here." I looked around "How do you know?" She looked at me sadly. "You'll find out soon enough baby." I was just about to open my mouth to speak again when my father interrupted me. "Son, we have some things to tell you. They aren't going to be the most... how should I say it... this isn't going to be the easiest thing to understand. I want you to hold all your questions, no matter how much you want to ask until we are finished talking. OK?" I only nodded in agreement. "Ok." My mom started. "You know that we haven't talked much about any relatives. You know that we are the only people you know with our last name. Well, that is because we made it up." I think my eyes about popped out of my head that second. "We made up our last name to protect you. Ah ah ah. Let me explain why. When your father and I met... there was a great war beginning. A seer told several thousands at the last peace talks held, that our child's death would bring an end to the war. That is, when you die, all death of those with the powers will cease fighting and rejoice in peace." She had tears in her eyes, and my father noticed, so he took over. "You see son, we had to change everything about ourselves before you were born, in order to keep you from being killed. Even the high council agreed on your death. Between the two of us we have been able to keep your powers hidden. However, it seems that between the distance, and the strength of these dreams, that your power has become very strong. Your power... has been noticed by the others. The nightmares that have happened... they are real, in a sense. They can feel your power flowing out of you, and use it to channel into your mind, hoping to find a weakness. I see now no reason to hold your powers at bay, they already know that you exist, here, now." My parents joined hands, both putting their free palms on each side of my temples. After a few seconds of them looking in deep concentration, I felt a gentle shock, like that of static. "It is done." My father breathed a sigh. "It will take time to learn to control your powers fully. However, time is something we don't have much of so we must..." He was cut off from the wall around the door being blown in. The first thing I thought is "This is no dream!" There were a mixture of 10 or so creatures, people and half creatures; all flooding into my dorm room! Fire balls flew by my head while an arc of lightning jumped from my fathers arm to two of our attackers. The bodies just slumped to the floor and lay lifeless. Just as my mother was gearing up for an attack on the remaining creatures I noticed a fireball flying straight for my face, and was too terrified to move. Just before it hit me, my father jumped in front of me and took a glancing blow, deflecting it from me, but still knocking him pretty good onto the ground. Seeing there was a clearing to the door now my father screamed to me, at least in my head "RUN!" I stood staring at my parents, wondering if I should stay and try to help, or really run. However, seconds later, as if on their own, my legs began moving me towards the door, and I couldn't control them. As I exited the building the noises from my dorm got much louder, as if hundreds of bombs were going off. I saw that there were people hanging around my car that I didn't recognize, so I didn't go towards it. They, however, recognized me and started to chase after me. I began running on my own now, into the path that goes into the forest. Just as I got out of sight of the dorms I heard 2 screams of agony from the voices of my parents, out loud, and inside my mind. The strength of the scream was so powerful that I collapsed over in my run and curled up into the fetal position, crying my eyes out. The figures following me caught up and stopped next to me. "Aww, poor baby's parents died, just like he's about to!" one of them spoke. "Hey, don't we get like a holiday bonus for this... 3 of them in one day!" The other said humorously. "Haha! You're right!" They high fived. "Well, kid. It's been fun." The larger one said, while concentrating and creating a black mass in his hand. Just as he was about to hurl it down at me, shots rang out from an automatic rifle. The sound of the shots was so loud, and so quick that it sounded like a chainsaw right next to my ear. The two bodies slumped down next to me and blood oozed out their many bullet holes. The black mass floating in the air vanished into nothing. "We need to go." A soft voice speaks into my ear. I look up to see a figure who reminds me of a member of a special ops team. Dressed in tight black clothes, a small vest, with a few tools attached. He had a hood covering his face and dark glasses covering his eyes. Whoever he was, he didn't want to be seen. "Come on lets go." He said again, just as soft, pulling me up off the ground. I began to walk away with him at my side when I realized I didn't know who I was following. "Who are you!?" I asked, my voice full of fear. "I'm here to help you." He said, sadly. "Don't you think that if I was going to kill you, that you'd be dead already?" I agreed and started walking with him the opposite way of my dorm and car... my parents. I stopped again. "What about the bodies!?" I asked, hearing the police sirens growing near. "We don't have time!" He insisted more forcefully this time, picking me up effortlessly and carrying me over his shoulder. After another few seconds he set me into the passenger seat of his car, and ran around to the front. Now the sirens were right around the corner, and he tossed the gun into the backseat, got in, and closed the door. The cops wouldn't be able to see us because I was sure the tent on the car windows is much over the legal limit. "We should be safe for now." He spoke again, still completely covered and concealed. "We're just going to wait here for a few minutes and let everyone get by on the road who might want to stop us and ask any questions." "God it's hot." He said, loosening and finally pulling off his mask. "Oh shit!" I gasped seeing the face behind the mask. "Derrick! What... YOU FOLLOWED ME HOME!?!?" I screamed, realizing what he had done. "Holy shit!" He said, grabbing his forehead out of pain. "Christ! Learn to control your temper, every magical in the state knows where we are now!" Realizing the severity of what I had done I calmed down. He cranked up the car, and pulled away, speeding towards the nearest road to get to the highway. "Why did you do it?" I asked. "Do what?" He said pretending not to know what I was talking about. "Why did you follow me Derrick!?" I asked, getting upset again. He noticed my state of distress and spoke "You left in a hurry. You didn't let me complete what I had to say. I tried to protect you..." He trailed off, composing his next statement. "This morning, I conjured the gun from in the room, there WAS something trying to kill you in there... trying to kill me. I wanted to see how you would react to the situation, before I took action. I didn't know at that time that you were blocked." "I see." I said, thinking over everything that has happened. "How do I know that I can trust you?" I said seriously. "How do I know that you aren't just trying to use me to your own volition, for your own reasons?" He looked seriously hurt by those comments, but I wasn't going to be taken for a fool. He pulled over to the side of the road. We were about a quarter mile from the freeway on ramp. I begun to got scared that he was going to throw me out of the car, because he wasn't talking. "Benjamin." He said, using my full name for the first time. "I care about you more than you will ever possibly understand. I can tell you don't believe me. So much that I'm going to take a chance. I'm going to look into an untrained magical's soul... allow an untrained magical to touch mine." He paused, hesitating going on. "You must be very careful. Do not touch ANYTHING while inside my mind... while touching my soul. You can only look. Touching, while not knowing what you're doing will be catastrophic to my body... to my soul. You could take part of my soul... remove part of me... destroy it... change it forever... the possibilities are endless. The point is, damage would be done that can not be undone. I would no longer be here to protect you. Do you understand?" I nodded yes, now knowing how important it would be for me to take care with this process. "Ok, I want you to look into my eyes." He looks away. "Not yet! You must know the process before you do it, we could get trapped that way forever... or at least until we are found and killed." I nodded. "Ok, after looking into my eyes, look BEYOND my eyes, look deeper. Once we both are at this point you will have to take my hand, and we will exchange energy. You will know how to do this at the moment it's needed. Once we exchange energies, we will be able to see into each others souls. We will be able to see memories, emotions. We will be able to speak, as if talking in person, so when we agree to break the bond, we must do it together. If this is not done at the exact same moment, one of us could pull a part of the other back... and never be able to release it. Are you ready?" I turned to look into Derrick's eyes he looked into mine and then, I looked deeper. He gently took my hand and as I felt a twitch of power, feeling like air going through his hand to mine, I automatically returned it. Instantly I was pulled into him and I was standing. I looked around and there was a mass of swirling colors and lights. I could feel him going through my memories, the pain, the past. It was very subtle, but I knew it was going on. It was much like reading a book and listening to music at the same time. After a few seconds, I was trying to figure out how to pull up memories of myself when I was pulled into a picture. It was of the previous night, when we were cuddling, I could feel his feelings for me as if they were mine, I could feel his pain for knowing what I was going through. He truly cared about me. I could feel his emotions, not just see them. I thought of his soul again and I was pulled out from the memory. "Ben." I could hear Derrick speaking to me. "We need to go, I think something is happening around us. When I say pull, pull only the energy you gave to me back. Ready? 3. 2. 1... pull." We broke the bond, in a kiss, nothing fancy, but just a tender kiss. I knew that he definitely cared about me at that point. When I opened my eyes I realized quite some time had passed, for it was dark outside. I could see blue and white lights flashing on the inside hood of the car. I look for the cop around our car, but he's not anywhere to be seen. I look behind us, towards the police car and gasp "OH SHIT!" Two magicals were holding the cop down, ready to slit his throat on the back of Derrick's car. That's it for chapter 3.
