Mage's Circle 1

Chapter 1

The Awakening

I sat, the silence of the room echoing with the whisper of the clock, tick tocking away with each passing second. The house was vacant and calm, the twilight sun shining through the window as the warm, late summer day slowly grew to its end.

The home was old, dusty, and smelled of sandalwood and cloves, much like it had during my childhood. I sighed, remembering for a brief moment my estranged parents, whom I had not seen in five years. With their sudden, mysterious, and vaguely described disappearance, I had inherited their home, and everything within the property lines.

Standing up from the couch I start to wander the house remembering all the time I spent with my parents here before they became cold and distant.  Without realizing it, I had wondered into my parents' bedroom, through the door that they had never let me in, once when I was younger I had tried to enter the room but the door would not budge.

Surprise ran through me as I lightly touched the door and it opened; what a large room, the walls where covered in a strange dialect of Latin I had never seen, the floor was covered in a soft, rich, and full carpet that was the deepest purple I had ever seen, and the strangest thing about the room was the tall, old oak bookshelves and their contents. Incense, candles, and hundreds of clearly labeled jars filled each shelf, and standing alone on a pedestal in the center of the room was a book. Normally, I would ignore this but the look of the book held my attention.

The book was old, bound in leather that was smooth to the touch and dark, almost wood looking.  On the cover was a silver Pentagram and the symbols that I recognized as the sigils for Earth, Air, Fire, and Water and in the center stood the sigil for Light.

All of a sudden I felt the urge to open the book and look inside. Upon opening the book a letter with my name written on it in my parents' handwriting.

Chad,

If you are reading this, your father and I are gone. First off I want to say no matter what it seemed, your father and I love you, you are our world and no one will ever replace you. Now if you found this you have found our room and now they know that you know. You must be wondering what I am talking about but read the book, it will explain everything.

We love you, be safe

Mom & Dad

I looked at the letter with tears in my eyes then remembering what my mother said opened the book.

On the first page of the book was a spell, now this confused me. You see my parents were not the ones to tolerate differences and to find something like this in their home amazed me. However as my mother asked, I continued to read.

On the night of the full moon stand in the light of the full moon in the center of a circle of candles with equal colors of Purple and white and chant this spell:

Powers of both dark and light

I beseech you now on this full moon night

Grant me now my earned birthright

Grant me power, Grant me might

Trusting my gut and looking out the window I notice that the full moon is just starting to rise and decide to humor my parents and give the spell a try. So, clearing a space in front of the window I counted out four purple and four white candles evenly spaced and alternating colors lighting them going clockwise. Standing in the center so he was covered in moonlight he began to chant.

On the second try through my voice started to resonate and sound like a mass of people chanting over and over with me.

My heart began to pound. The floor began to spin, faster and faster, wind whipping my face and body from all directions. My heart beat rose, higher and higher, until I was sure I was about to die. My face and arms went cold, blood draining from them in the shock and confusion of the disorienting moment. Suddenly, there was a loud crash, like a crack of lightening, and a sharp pain ripped through my chest, knocking me to my knees and forcing all the breath from me. I tried to gasp for air, but the force of the winds wouldn't allow me to inhale. Everything began to blur, slurring together into a mess of color and confusion. Everything went black, and I collapsed with a hallow thud to the ground.

I opened my eyes and my first thought was I was dead because there in front of me was my mother, scolding me for trying to get into the alter room.

"Wait, I was five when that happened, what the hell is going on?" I say to myself.

The scene around me blurs and I am now standing by my bedroom window when I was supposed to be in bed and I see my mom and dad and a bunch of other people standing in a pentagram that matched the one on the book completely down to the last detail.

"Ok, now I'm seven again, what the he-"

"Don't you dare finish that sentence young man!" said a voice I never thought I'd hear again. I whipped around and there stood my mom with the look that said I had done something beyond stupid.

"You couldn't even wait to read the rest of the page could you? Never do that again! You just alerted every magical being within a 5 mile radius! Thank the gods you own all of that, you moron."

"Mom, what's going on mom? I'm freaking out here!"

"Now he wants an explanation, just like his father I swear."

"Funny mom, real funny."

"Ok let's start from the beginning, and don't you dare interrupt me either. Now around 750 years ago there was an evil so strong that the gods decided that they needed to intervene, however there is an ancient divine law that states that they couldn't step into the affairs of mortals or other gods unless there is a direct threat to their own life. So they decided to send the guardians of the 5 elements to 5 chosen mortals to wield their power on earth to defeat the evil."

"Now fast-forward a few generations and we see that these 5 chosen became arrogant and where as bad as the being that they locked away so they gods decided to lock away these powers away in the bloodlines of these families. Now fast-forward to my generation and our powers again where unlocked and now it's your generations turn to stop the evil before it can rise."

"Now that you have awakened your power you must use the spell to call for your circle, when you wake the names of your circle will be listed along with the name of your advisor."

I started to notice that everything around me was going blurry.

"Mom! What's happening?" I yelled in a panic.

"It's time to wake up hunny we will find you soon."

Everything went started to fade and slowly went completely black.
