Chapter 15 Part A
"Last Call"
Time is quickly ticking away, and Jamie is literally watching the clock. It's almost time for him to go home. Out of nowhere, the bell goes off, signaling an emergency. When the bell stops going off, the basics of the call comes across the radio.
"Attention all firemen and EMS crews, we have a house fire with a child believed to be still in the house. Parents and 2 of the four children are safely outside. Parents believe that the younger kids are hiding in the back bedroom. Parents couldn't get to them."
The chief gets on the radio and pages them out.
"Station 2 fire crews and ems are responding. Eta is three minutes."
Even under the best conditions, it's three minutes. Everyone knows that they have to get there fast. Luckily, everyone else on the roads obeyed traffic laws, so they didn't go around anyone. As they pull up the fire, it looks pretty bad.
As the firemen get off the truck, a neighbor approaches them to speak with them.
"I'm sorry, but the parents are really distraught. They have two three-year-olds in the house. The fire cut the parents off, and they couldn't reach them to get them out. They think the kids are in the back bedroom. It's on the left side of the house."
Jamie can hear the conversation between the neighbor and the chief. The chief thanks the neighbor and sends him back after reassuring him they will do everything possible to rescue the kids. Chief walks to the firemen and tells them to do everything possible to get those kids out. Flames are showing as the firefighters enter the home. The firefighters break up into teams. One team is fighting the fire, and the others will try to reach the kids. They are armed with hoses and axes. The air in the house is already smoke-filled. Young lungs wouldn't stand a chance if they were in a place where the fire was burning harder. They march on, trying to put out the fire as they march on. They are on the house's left side, and the air temperature is much hotter. Jamie knows that they have found kids in closets and in a bad fire, that could be a death sentence. Meanwhile, back at the house, Cam is stressing because his guy isn't home yet, and that can only mean one thing; a fire.
Cameron is trying to improve his anxiety when Jamie gets called out on a fire. This one, though, is bugging him. He doesn't know why but feels like this call is terrible. Maybe the extra anxiety is because of Jamie's injuries in a previous fire. Knowing that Cameron is upset, Princess is beside him on the couch. Cameron takes a deep breath and then gets a book to read. He decides not to fret about it and does his best to relax. He reads aloud to see if he can curb more of his anxiety. Meanwhile, back at the fire, Jamie is the one struggling.
Jamie is thankful the parents got the other kids out because this isn't looking good. He is trying to stay strong. They are calling out to the kids, but nothing. One of the team calls the Chief to find out their names. He responds quickly with the names.
"Amy, Brady, Can you hear me? I need you to scream if you can hear me."
One of the team members risks their lungs to call out. They try to listen for the sounds of little kids, but the fire is drowning out their voices, or they can't speak for whatever reason. It's not good either way. Not knowing what they are going to find is extremely hard on Jamie. The fire is getting intense as get closer to the bedroom. Standing just a few feet from the bedroom, they call out again, but to no avail. Either they are too scared to speak up, or the smoke got to them already. They are watching the fire as they get closer to the bedroom. Inside the bedroom, there are flames everywhere and a lot of smoke. It's hard to see into the room, but Jamie is determined to reach that closet.
"Captain, the room has flames to the ceiling and tons of smoke. Permission to attempt to put out the flames?"
Instantly, his captain says to quench those flames. He wasted no time in responding because he knows every second counts.
"Okay, let's hit it and hit it hard."
The firefighters unleash the water on the fire, which takes a while, but the fire in the room is put out. It's so close to the closest. Sadly, he has to report to the chief on the kids.
"Captain, the kids...the kids didn't make it. I'm sorry. I'm heading back. The room is out, but the closet..."
Jamie breaks down, and the Captain wants his man out of there.
"Jamie, I know you're not ready to be out of the house, but I am ordering out of the house."
The captain is right. Jamie isn't ready to leave the house but listens to what he's told. He turns and leaves the house.
Jamie takes off gear when he gets to the truck. The captain walks up to him. He knows his man is in a bad way. Jamie is a good firefighter, but today would be hard for any firefighter. Children are tough no matter what. Jamie wants to speak with the parents and give his condolences, but someone else from the station is already handling it. It's going to be a rough night. The other firefighters that were with him will all be struggling with their death. The Captain is contacting the guy in charge and letting them know they will need a counselor to speak with all the firefighters on that crew. He wants his people in tip-top shape.
Even though that bedroom had been cleared, the fire was not out. It again begins to consume the bedroom. The fire once again begins to burn. Some of the other firefighters had removed the bodies, and they sit on the side of the fire trucks so that they can't be seen by the people on the other side of the street. Captain calls for the coroner to show up and claim the bodies. He also tells the parents that the bodies have been removed from the home. As Jamie turns back to the house, the flames pour out of the roof over the back of the house.
`I can't imagine what the parents and the other kids must be going through right now.'
Jamie gets up to get into the truck, where he can be alone.
Jamie sees the parents and captain talking as he enters the truck. The mother breaks down, and as she does and so does he. He is going crazy. He wonders if Cameron is okay because Cameron will have to be strong for him. At least he can be home to his boyfriend and dog, even if he struggles emotionally. The parents won't have their kids, which is really rough. He wants to go home, but they can't until the fire is out. For now, he is offering support to the firefighters dealing with the fire. He's making sure the truck has water and all of that kind of stuff. While the captain is making sure that everyone else has aid as well. He even gave out information to the parents. The captain wants to give Cameron a head up on Jamie's condition.
"Brayden, you know Jamie's boyfriend, right?"
Brayden nods, and the captain wants to ask him something.
"Brayden, can you call Jamie's boyfriend to tell him about the situation?"
Brayden nods and steps away from the firetruck so that hopefully Jamie won't see or hear him.
Brayden grabs his phone off of the truck. He finds Cameron's number and hits the call icon. Cameron is enjoying a video game when his phone rings. Cameron doesn't mean to have a spike in his anxiety, but knowing that Jamie is out on fire and having Brayden calling him causes his brain to start working overtime. He doesn't even know what's wrong yet.
"Brayden, what's wrong with Jamie?"
Jamie's and Cameron's friend worries how his best friend's boyfriend will take this news.
"Cameron, we got the news that two kids were in the house. Jamie and a few other firefighters found the kids in a closet. He's kind of freaking out at the moment. So don't be surprised if he comes home and cries or doesn't want to talk. Just be there for him."
Cameron may be feeling a bit anxious, but it's not the same anxiety he used to feel when Jamie went to a fire. He's sad for his babe.
"Thanks for calling Brayden! I'll make sure to stay up for him. Is he going to drive himself home?"
Brayden knows that if his friend asks him to bring him home, he will bring him home.
"I don't know what's going to happen, honestly, as far as him driving home. I'll let you know what happens with that. Talk to you later, Cameron!"
Cameron looks at the dog with a sad face and then says goodbye to his friend. Knowing that when Jamie gets him, he'll need to be there.
