Lost Without Love

Chapter 3

It took about ten minutes to drive to Jason's house from school. As I pulled up behind him in the driveway, I was awe struck. His house was HUGE!! I knew his family was pretty wealthy, but damn! I slowly recovered from my shock and got the guts to finally get out of my car.

"Wow, nice place you have here."

"Thanks. But it's just a house." He said simply.

"Just a house?! Dude, it's like a palace in here!!"

He laughed at my enthusiasm. We finally made our way inside when my eyes looked like they were going to pop out of my head and my jaw practically hit the floor.

"Woooooooooooooow!" Was all I was able to come up with.

Jason laughed at the look on my face,

"Shall we get started?" He asked.

"Uh...yeah...sure."

We spent the past two weeks getting together working on his math. It wasn't just work though. We talked about a lot of things. Like what we liked to do on our spare time. We practically told one another everything about ourselves...well, not everything. We practically became best friends in the time we've spent together. Olivia and Damian didn't mind it at all. I wasn't the only one who had a crush on him, ya know. Apparently Olivia has the hots for him too.

The next Monday at school, I was heading to my locker during passing period after second hour to grab some books and head to lunch. As turned the corner I saw Jason and his loser jock friends standing at his locker. His was 3 down from mine. I stepped behind the corner just before he could turn around and see me. I heard him say something and I thought I heard my name so I tried to listen in on them. The hall was fairly empty since kids were heading to lunch or study hall.

"So why have you been spending so much time with the fag anyway?" Asked Mitch, linebacker for the football team.

"Hey, he's tutoring me in Geometry. Just trying to keep my ass from getting kicked off the team is all." Jason said laughing.

Once I registered what he had just said, tears started forming in my eyes and I could feel my anger rising. `Why did he not defend me?' I thought to myself. I thought we'd gotten pretty close lately, but from what I just heard, that wasn't the case at all.

"Well, at least he's useful for something." Mitch said as he let out a big laugh. Jason just snorted and started laughing along. As soon as they walked away, I went to my locker and grabbed the books I needed. I skipped lunch and went straight to my third period physics class. I was too upset to eat and knowing I had Jason in all of my classes didn't help the situation. I knew he was going to act like nothing is wrong and play it cool.

Jason tried to talk to me for the rest of the afternoon. I was relieved when the final bell rang. I jumped out of my seat and headed straight for the junior parking lot. I was almost to my car when Jason stepped out in front of me and kept me from going anywhere else.

"I've been trying to talk to you all afternoon." He said glumly.

"Why? So you can try to play nice in front of my face and then talk shit about me behind my back? I don't think so." It sounded a bit harsh and with attitude but I didn't care right now.

"What are you talking about?" He asked with quite a bit of confusion in his voice.

"I was going to my locker after second period to grab some books for my last two classes when I saw you and your friends at your locker. I didn't want to be seen by them so I hid behind a corner. Then I heard that jackass Mitch ask you, `Why have you been hanging out with the fag so much?' and all you can say is that I'm just some way to keep you from getting kicked off the team?"

"You heard that?"

"Obviously, then Mitch says `Well, at least he's useful for something.' and all you do is laugh about it."

He fell silent before I spoke again,

"And what hurts worse than hearing that is the fact that you didn't try to stick up for me." Tears started coming to the surface.

"Look, Johnny, I'm so-" I cut him off,

"You know what Jason, just save it. You don't mean anything with that apology."

"But I am."

"Just leave me alone." With that I got into my car and drove home, crying the whole way there.

"Since no one Is ever home, all I did was flop on the couch balling my eyes out. Just then, my phone rang and it was Olivia.

I answered knowing I wasn't going to be able to hide it. I tried anyway.

"Hello?"

"Alright Johnny, who did it?" Olivia asked automatically. There was no hiding it now.

"It's Jason." I said trying to calm myself down.

"What he do Johnny? I'm going to beat his fucking face in." Damian demanded. Olivia obviously had us on a three way call.

I spent the last ten minutes telling them the whole story. I could tell Damian was getting really pissed. When I finished,

"THAT FUCKING BASTARD!!" Damian screamed.

"Damian, don't worry about it." I said glumly.

"No Johnny! He hurt you, no one hurts my brother and gets away with it."

"Y-you're actually sticking up for me?" I was surprised by Damian's reaction.

"Johnny, I know that things have been a bit rocky between us lately, but that doesn't mean that I don't care about you. So you told me you're gay and that you like me. Big deal, I acted like a jerk about it when I should've been supportive. It was totally stupid. Nothing's ever going to change or ruin our friendship."

"You mean that?" Apparently I was still in shock.

"Of course."

"Thanks, Damian."

"No problem, bro.

"Well you two, I'm really tired. I'm going to get some shut eye. I'll see you both in the morning."

"Alright Johnny, good night, love ya." They both said.

"Good night, I love you guys too." I said, and just before I hung up,

"Hey, Johnny?" It was Damian.

"Yeah man?"

"Don't let that asshole get to you. Just know that Olivia and I have your back."

"Yeah, I know."

"And Johnny?"

"Yeah?" I waited for him to answer. "I love you bro." I smiled at what he just said.

"I love you too man."

"Good night."

"Good night." Then we hung up.

With all that has happened during the day, I was so tired that I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

The next day, I was in a better mood after talking with Olivia and Damian. It felt great to know that Damian and I are still best friends, practically brothers. Jason kept trying to get me to talk to him but I ignored him the whole time. It wasn't until lunch that I was forced to talk to him.

I went to the bathroom shortly after I had finished eating. When I walked in, I heard sniffling and soft sobs coming from one of the stalls. When the stall opened, I froze, surprised to see Jason come out. His eyes were red and puffy and had tear stains on his cheeks. When he saw me, he just froze.

"Jase...are you ok?" I was finally able to catch my breath and ask him.

"Yeah...I'm fine."

"No, you're not. What's wrong?"

"Why do you care? You hate me." He was on the verge of tears again.

"That's not true."

"Then why have you been ignoring me for the past week?"

"Because Jason, you hurt me. Instead of sticking up for me when someone was talking shit about me, you like about it like it was nothing."

"I know, and I'm sorry. I should've stuck up for you."

"Look, we need to get back to class, but why don't I come over after school and we can talk and straighten things out. Is that ok?" I asked.

"Yeah, that's cool." He was just about to turn and walk away before I stopped him,

"Jase, wait a sec, I don't have my car today, can I hitch a ride with you?"

"Sure"

"Thanks"

"No problem." Was all he said then we made our way back to class.

The rest of the day went by smoothly and I was relieved when the final bell rang. I was sort of glad to be getting things worked out between Jason and I, but I knew I had to tell him my secret. Telling him wouldn't be that big of a problem. The thing is...how do I tell him?...
