Did you know that the white streaks of what appears to be smoke following a jet are actually thousands of beads of ice? Just checking to see if you are still with me = )

Before I get started I would like to take this moment to correct a few things in the first installment of this story. First off, the person who edited the story for me misspelled my name. Amos, not Avery. You may notice that there is a major slip in the plot because I refer to the boy, Ryan, as being mute, yet he speaks at the end of the story. I actually meant to infer that he is mute about the location of the book they are looking for, not mute as in unable to speak... though thinking back on it this would've made for a more interesting plot. Which brings us to the next topic; the book they are looking for. The concept was supposed to be that all three books held a piece of the map to the treasure they seek. However, due to my obvious inadequacy as a writer, I misstated this by saying all three books held a map to the treasure... so... scratch that and go with the theory that they have two parts of the map and the book Ryan alone knows the location of is still necessary to locate seid treasure. Last, parts of the story can be a little misconceived. When asked by Mr. Black what happens to the boy if he doesn't tell the location of the book, the mysterious female negotiator replies something to the nature of: You know how dark this business can sometimes be." I did not mean that they were going to kill him. I meant that they would be unable to find what they were looking for. Also it can appear if not read closely that they are holding him hostage, they aren't he's in their services to be protected from people who ARE out to INTERROGATE him, not necessarily kill him. I hope I've pleased the masses... now the story.

Lost in the Blaze by Devon Amos Chapter:1.5 In the Remix

Ryan sat on the unfamiliar bed watching the guards in his room playing poker and arguing about the outcome of the games. He began to wonder what his friends were doing right now. It suddenly struck him that he had no idea what time of day it was, he had last track in the events of late. It could be the middle of the day, possibly 3 in the morning. He had no idea. He considered asking the guards then thought better of it. He could care less what time of day it was, and any excuse not to have to talk to these losers was a great excuse.

Elissa walked in the room, she wore a long black coat. Very young, Extremely hot, it was unfortunate that due to the circumstances he couldn't really appreciate her appeal. She was walking with a sense of urgency as she approached the guards.

"Hardly working again eh boys?"

The all laughed and snarled at her.

"We have a green light, he's on his way back to base right now, I need one guard posted at this door, and another with the boy, the other two of you in the screening walk. So lets get on it. She walked over to Ryan as the guards scuffled over the assignments.

"Are you sure you can't remember anything about where daddy kept the book Ryan?"

"No M'am"

"Hmm... well if you think of anything be a doll and call me first ok."

She slipped a contact number with her name on it into his hand and closed his fingers over it. Then looked up at him and smiled.

"Yes M'am"

"Ryan, it's going to break my heart, but we are no longer able to keep you here, it would be too dangerous. We feel you have a better chance with someone able to remain on the move and keep you safe. This family has it's roots firmly planted here in London and despite all our efforts we are firmly planted in the public eye. As soon as the bad people realize we are protecting you, they will know where to come, and we feel it's best that you be far away when that happens.

"Where will I stay."

Ryan began to get scared, he got the same feeling he had the day he walked in and found the remains of his parents... cold chills ran down his spine. Whoever he was running from had no heart, and there was no way he could survive out there on his own.

"Don't worry Ryan, we've found the best of the best. Someone to protect you, and keep you safe. We've done our research here and we are pretty sure you're going to like him."

Ryan was no more assured by this response. He had found some sort of comfort in numbers. He was afraid of some scary mercenary, thug, refugee taking him on a killing spree across the nation. He wondered if his life would ever be normal again.

She placed her hand on his shoulder and smiled down at him.

"It'll all be ok, trust me."

He wished that he could have faith in what she said, but he was uneasy of being dished. off on someone. Who probably had no interest in him other than a paycheck.

Elissa exited the room a bit worried about whether or not she could convince Mr. Black of the same thing she sold Ryan on. It was hard letting go of the child, but in the intent to pursue the fortune of Dracul's treasure she had lost a lot of important moral struggles and it came down to what it would take to get that gold. She was convinced that it would take a kid, to get info from a kid. To Ryan she was probably just another authoritative adult figure, and though he denied it she knew the boy knew where his father hid the book. He had to know.

"Ready," she called to the guards.

She looked at the screen and saw the convoy approaching. Four Black vans enclosing the car. She had aerial visual and he was only a block away. As he approached quickly, thundering through the streets she sat in her desk facing the wall, wishing it was anybody else trying to negotiate with this kid. Anybody but her.

Moments later Mr. Black waltzed through the door, closely clutching a pouch at his side, He surveyed the room as he entered and she hoped that he didn't get the wrong idea from the guard standing at the corner of the room. He didn't appear to notice. She took a good look at him through the monitor screen, her back to him. He was a tall slender boy, dressed completely in black with sunglasses on, awkward for the room was completely dark save for an intimate spotlight, this was a method she chose to hide the armed man in the corner. A black duster, leather pants a Australian style black cowboy hat clipped up on one side. No facial hair, he was probably still too young to grow a beard, yet he'd undoubtedly shed blood, and most likely killed by now... what a ridiculous concept. She could immediately identify that someone was asleep at the screening wheel, he was obviously packing and whore a knife around his calf to boot. Something stuck her suddenly, his build, his motions.... No, could it possibly be, was he a Pierce.... the family had been eliminated, or so it was her thought. perhaps all mercenaries for hire appeared alike. Yet that would explain his skill, coming from one of the most infamous "dirty work" families in history.

She hastily congratulated him on the work he'd done retrieving book. She took a deep breath and decided that now was the time to bring up Ryan.

His initial reaction was as though she was attempting to con him, But when Mr. Black heard the price, he was unable to pass up the offer. She explained to him in detail the circumstances under which Ryan had come into their care, and what they were to gain through it all.

Being a tough buy, Black knew there could be more in this for him and connived his means out. She was at this point willing to pay any price to ensure that plans stayed on pace. It was fairly easy compared to what she was expecting, perhaps there was a level of ignorance to the kid, after all, he may be packing some big guns and have the reputation to back them up, but he was nonetheless still just a 16 year old.

"When do I acquire the child?"

"Right Now!"

The guards brought Ryan about so that Mr. Black could see him, the shock in Ryan's face as he say Black was priceless, He immediately felt a level of comfort in someone more his own age. He was also strangely surprised at the feelings stirring inside himself. There was this allure to the glasses and the duster, he was a true to life Matrix-type guy! Ryan felt a surge of instant connection to Black.

"Listen Ryan, I'm going to do my best to make sure no harm comes your way, but we've got to get moving, I know you've been through a lot in the last few days and you have no good reason to, but you need to trust in me."

"OK." He said, trembling, latched to the arm of the guard. He hadn't even heard what Black had said, he just nodded and said "OK." He was instantly faithful in this stranger.

Black and Elissa closed the deal and she escorted Ryan and Black to the limo that awaited downstairs, Ryan grabbed black's hand as they walked, Black jerked at first, then, realizing what was happening he let his guard down and smiled, he turned to Elissa, she was overjoyed to see the act, and Ryan... he was silently aware that the gesture was pleasing to the two, but he made the effort out of an effort to find security in his new situation, and the strong grip that Black had, made it obvious that he wasn't just going to let go.
