Chapter 6

KENNEDY

Friday night was finally here. The night of my Halloween party. Aspen and I had been decorating for a few hours. We managed to turn the entire upstairs into a haunted house of sorts and the kitchen and dining room looked like a witch's secret lair. Marta had been busy making the Hors d'oeuvre.

Aspen had dressed up as a boy version of Sailor Venus. He had on sparkly orange shorts with a big yellow bow in the back and he'd found a vintage sailor shirt and fixed it up to look more like hers. He looked adorable running around putting up streamers.

"Will you help me hang this one up here, please?" Aspen asked standing on his tip toes in the foyer.

"Sure, hold on," I said setting down the box of orange and purple strands of lights.

I made my way over to the chair he was standing on. Because I was so much taller than him, I could reach where he wanted almost without the chair. I stepped up and as I did, he started to fall off. I grabbed hold of him around the waist to steady him. Aspen had his hands on my chest and I felt my heart start to speed up. Aspen blushed and stepped off the chair.

"Your Artemis outfit is amazing. Kira is gonna die. Look at the costume she made that she posted on Instagram." I glanced down and took in her selfie. She had her hair styled exactly like Human Luna in the manga and her dress was the perfect shade of black and gold. My heart skipped a beat. She was so beautiful.

"Wow," was all I could get out.

"You guys are going to look so cute, she'll just HAVE to talk to you. When she does, please do us all a favor and ask her out."

I blushed, hard, "Isn't it a little soon to be asking her on dates?"

"Dude! You've literally been crushing on her for like five years! Of course, it's not too soon!" he said before he stepped back, "A little to the left."

Soon the house was full of people from school. Aspen and I had sent out an invite and as soon as people saw what part of town it was in, they were just dying to get in. I was in the kitchen, trying my best to not spill anything on my white suit.

"Kennedy! Are you supposed to be Artemis?" Kira asked as she walked in.

"Ha yeah! Are you Luna? What a coincidence!" I chuckled nervously.

"I am! It's so cute that you and Aspen came in a couple's costume!" she giggled. Wait. Did she think that Aspen and I were a thing?

"We aren't in a couple's costume?" I said slowly.

"Oh...well he is dressed as Sailor Venus and you are Artemis. Artemis is Venus' cat," she picked up a red cup and took a sip.

"Oh, I guess we didn't think about that; he just went as Venus because she is his favorite scout," I said as I shrugged.

"So you two aren't dating?" she asked.

"No! Not that it would be a bad thing- he's not the worst choice- but I'm not gay. Ha I like you- God did I just say that out loud?" I face palmed. What an idiot.

"You like...me?" she looked at me through her long lashes.

"Yeah, sorry, I was gonna try to be way more smooth when I asked you out," I stuffed my hands in my pockets and looked down at the floor, the long silver hair of my wig falling around my eyes.

"You're gonna ask me out?"

"I am if you'd consider it," I said sheepishly.

"Yeah, I think that would be fun," she said. Ugh, she was so cool. How was I getting so lucky in this moment?

ASPEN

I peeked from the doorway of the kitchen, smiling from ear to ear. It looked like things were going well for Kennedy. I wanted him to be happy and it was awesome that he was finally talking to the girl he liked. Though, I couldn't understand the small tinge of...jealousy?..I was feeling. I brushed it off.

"Orange is a great color on you," I heard from behind me. I turned and saw Leon standing before me dressed as Minako Aino. He had on a long blonde wig half tied up with a red bow. He had on a pretty accurate looking Juban Middle School girl's uniform. I burst out laughing, when I looked back up he was wearing a relieved smile.

"What the heck, Leon?" I asked through laughter.

"I'm sorry, you're right, I don't get a say over what you wear. I want you to feel good in what you wear and I don't want you to dress for me. Can you forgive me?" he asked. His hand reached out and grabbed mine.

"Leon-" I started but I was cut off by his lips on mine. They were so soft and gentle and warm. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer. Gods how I'd missed his kiss. The flavor of cherry chap stick stuck to my lips and blended with the flavor of my sugar cookie lip balm.

When he finally pulled back, it was hard to stop kissing him.

"So is that a yes?" he asked.

"Promise me you'll stop trying to be my owner and start being my boyfriend," I said firmly.

"I promise. Can we go be alone somewhere? I missed you a lot this last week," he admitted.

"Well...no...I mean, I'm co-hosting the party, so I can't necessarily leave..." I explained.

"Oh, I understand. I just figured that I won't get much time to be with you alone tomorrow at your Samhain celebration. That is...if I'm still invited," he said hopefully.

"Of course you are. Kennedy will be there too," I said, worried that it would upset him. He surprised me, however, and put on a smile.

"That will a fun time. I just really want to show you just how much I missed you," Leon said into my ear before he gently bit my earlobe. He knew that always got me going.

"And I want to return the favor, but I'm busy. Maybe if you're still up for it later," I said with a grin. I turned and went back into the kitchen. Kennedy and Kira had moved to the table. He glanced up and smiled at me as I poured myself some punch.

I guzzled down the first cup and poured another. I began making rounds to make sure that everyone was having a good time. Bodies were grinding against one another in the living room. Talking was mostly being done in the foyer. I had to stop a couple of horny classmates from going into one of the guest rooms.

As I finished the second glass of punch I noticed I was feeling different. I was starting to get a little dizzy and I felt unbalanced. I got to the kitchen and grasped a counter to hold myself up. I giggled to myself.

I looked over and saw Kira put her hand on Kennedy's arm as she laughed. I smiled like an idiot and went to get more punch. I had just pured it, but my arms felt all warm and gooey and I couldn't lift the cup to my lips. Kennedy was watching me now. I almost spilled and that's when he got up to find out what was going on.

KENNEDY

"You okay?" I asked Aspen as I watched him attempt to get from behind the counter. He looked like he was three sheets to the wind. I grabbed his cup before he could spill it and took a whiff.

"I'm f...fine," he giggled, slurring a bit.

"Have you ever had an alcoholic drink before? Did you know you got the spiked punch?"

"I'm drunk?" he laughed.

I glanced at Kira, she was giggling behind her hand.

"I don't feel good..." he said slowly.

"C'mon, let's get you to the bathroom," I was a little tipsy from the alcohol I'd been consuming through the night, but I knew how to handle myself while I was drunk. I wrapped my arm around his waist and walked him to the bathroom and before I could shut the door, he was on his hands and knees in front of the toilet, hurling.

I closed the door and rushed to his aid. I pulled his hair away from his face and held it while he threw up the bright red drink. He heaved and I rubbed his back the way my mom used to when I was little. He smiled over his shoulder and for a minute I was stone cold sober. His blue eyes met mine and I could feel my face get hot.

"Thank you, I feel much better now," Aspen said as he sat back on his heels. Now he was just inches away from my face and my heart was beating fast. Why? Why was I so flustered by him? He was practically glowing. Ha, barfing did wonders for him. He giggled a little and stood up.

"Do you have a spare toothbrush?" he asked.

"I only have mine," I replied.

"Can I use it?"

Normally, the thought of someone using my toothbrush would disgust me. In this particular case, I didn't mind. I handed him my toothbrush and smiled. My heart was feeling something and I wasn't sure what it was, but I knew it was making me a little uncomfortable, so I decided to leave.

"I'll be downstairs with Kira," I said quickly. I turned on my heel and bolted after he nodded.

A few hours later, the last couple of guests were heading out into the early morning chill. Leon went to his house to change and grab something he wanted to show me. Kennedy and I were the only ones left.

"So you and Leon are all cool now?" Kennedy asked as he swiped a few more empty cups into the huge black bag he was carrying. He had taken off his costume and was wearing shorts and a t-shirt now. He'd given me a shirt to borrow so I didn't get anything on my outfit while I cleaned. It was like a dress on me. He was so broad and I was certainly not.

"Yeah, I think he really understood what he was missing and he decided to shape up," I replied, tying up the third full trash bag of the night.

"Can I be honest?" he asked. I noticed out of the corner of my eye that he'd stopped moving and was looking in my direction. I decided to just keep picking up garbage. I sang along in my head to the song that was playing. Banshee by Kendra Morris, if you were wondering.

"Of course, Kennedy," I replied as I pushed more paper plates and plastic cups into a new bag.

"He doesn't deserve you. At all. You need a man and Leon is just a stupid boy. He doesn't love you the way you deserve," he said. I could hear a bit of jealousy in his voice and it made my heart race.

"You don't know him," I said frankly, I looked up at his dark green eyes.

"I don't need to know him to know that he's all wrong for you."

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were jealous," I chuckled. He didn't look away, he just kept his eyes locked on mine.

"Jealous?" he moved forward, "Why would I be jealous of that insufferable windbag?"

"I...I don't...know," I said softly as he got closer.

"I'm not jealous," he told me. He was mere inches from me now. His cologne caught my nose and my knees went weak.

"Okay," I said with a shrug, casting my eyes down at my hands.

"Okay?" his warm breath was on my cheeks now, "You don't sound like you believe me."

"What if I don't?" I looked up. My eyes met his again and his were almost sparkling.

"What's that smell?" he blurted suddenly.

"Smell?" I inhaled. There was definitely a scent just under the comforting smell of his cologne. It smelled almost skunky. He hunched down and looked under the table. When he stood back up, he was holding a little baggie with some little green nuggets in it. I'd been on Facebook enough and had enough stoner friends to know that he was holding marijuana. ннн

"Looks like someone dropped their goods," he chuckled.

"Looks like!"

"Wanna smoke it?" Kennedy asked. He looked dead serious. I had never drunk alcohol before tonight, let alone considered doing drugs.

"Right now? Leon is coming back to get me in a little bit, and after that scene earlier..." I said slowly.

"Oh, right. It's cool. I just thought it could make cleaning this mess up a little more fun," he shrugged.

"Let me tell Leon to just meet up with me for lunch or something," I said quickly. I wasn't ready to stop hanging out with Kennedy, besides, it wasn't fair to make him clean up the entire mess all by himself.

"So you do wanna smoke it?" he asked excitedly.

"I've never done it before so you better not be a jerk to me if I mess up," I said, pulling out my phone and dialing Leon's number.

"Sweet! I'll roll us a joint! I think I have still have some papers from my stoner days," he laughed and bounded off toward his room. I pressed the send call button and held my phone tightly to my ear.

"Hey! I just got done getting dressed, you ready?" Leon asked enthusiastically as he answered the phone.

"About that..." I said reluctantly.

"What's up?" I heard the excitement fade from his voice.

"Well, Kennedy's place is a wreck and I'm gonna stay and help him clean. Can we do lunch tomorrow?" I was nervously biting my thumbnail as I told him.

"I really want a moment to talk about us. I waited all night for this," he whined.

"Then you can wait a few more hours until lunch, right?"

"Sure," he replied. I could tell he was disappointed. I felt bad, but I was needed here. Besides, I wondered about that intense moment when Kennedy was so close, I could feel his breath. I wanted to see what the night would hold for me.

"I love you," he said softly on the other end.

"Same, Leon, goodnight," I said quickly and hung up the phone. I stuffed it into my back pocket and leaned against the counter.

"Oh yeah, baby! This rolled into a nice fat joint!" Kennedy exclaimed, coming back into the kitchen.

"Light `er up!" I said. I didn't have to ask him twice. We sat down on a little love seat against the wall in the foyer. He took a couple of puffs and inhaled deeply. A smile came across his handsome face as his eyes rolled back and smoke came billowing out his nostrils. He passed it to me and I looked at him anxiously.

"Just put it in your mouth, suck in and then take a deep breath," he chuckled. I did as I was told and I immediately started coughing.

"Ugh...ick...that was terrible!" I said, handing him the joint.

"You just didn't do it right," he said with a grin.

"I don't think I can," I sighed.

"Well I can shotgun it to you," he shrugged.

"What?" I raised my brow at him.

"I take the puffs and I exhale it while you get close and inhale it," he said as he leaned back against the sofa.

"I guess we could try," I said with a nervous laugh.

"Cool," he inhaled again and got close to me. I leaned in and he blew the smoke right at my mouth. I sucked in what I could and exhaled too. My mind started to get fuzzy and the music in the background was starting to sound so much better.

"One more hit?" he asked before inhaling deeply. I nodded and brought my face close to his. He exhaled slowly and the smoke started to rise up so I took a deep breath through my nostrils. His eyes were locked on mine, glossy and red as Satan's toenails. He blew the rest out in a thin stream right at my mouth and his warm breath mixed with the smoke made me dizzy.

"Are we going to kiss?" I blurted suddenly. I felt like my filter had turned completely off. Why would I ask such a question? He was straight, that was so rude of me.

"Do you want to?" Kennedy whispered. It was such a low and sexy voice, I almost didn't think it was real.

"Do you?" I asked back.
