CHAPTER 1

ASPEN

I sat patiently until Mr. Sorenson gave me a partner for the science project we had to complete before winter break. I had my fingers crossed that he would just let me work with my brother, Cypress. Unfortunately, that horse was shot in the face when he paired Cy with Janet Kingsley.

"Aspen Willow, you will be working with Kennedy Valentine," the teacher said and then continued.

My breath caught in my throat. I glanced over my shoulder and saw him in the back of the room. He glared. Kennedy Valentine was one of the most mysterious guys in school. Honestly, one of the most mysterious guys in Cherrywick, Pennsylvania. No one hardly knew a thing about him and he always looked angry. I wasn't sure if I could work with him.

"Everyone get with your partner and brainstorm some ideas and plan out a time to meet after school to work on it."

I took a deep breath and looked at Kennedy again. It was very clear he wasn't about to move. He leaned back in his chair further. He had on a flannel button up and some torn jeans. A tight white shirt hugged him under the flannel. His auburn hair was slicked back under a backwards ball cap. (My school is super progressive and we are allowed to wear what we want within reason. That means boys can wear hats and girls can wear spaghetti straps)

I stood up, trying to compose myself before walking over to the table he was at. His left leg was propped up on the seat I was to sit in.

"Scuse me," I said politely. He grumbled as he took his leg down and I pulled out the chair and sat, "So do you have any ideas?"

"Nope."

"That's okay, I was secretly brainstorming while he was lecturing at the beginning of class," I smiled. He didn't.

"Cool."

"What do you think about studying plants and their reactions to music. Like we could buy three plants that are the same type. Then we could play music for one. No music for one. And then physically sing to the third one and see which one flourishes the best," I offered. It was on the very top of my list and I really wanted to do this one.

"Fine."

He doesn't say much, does he? "Okay when do you wanna meet to start working on this?"

He shrugged. I swear this was going to prove to be quite a difficult project if he didn't start forming sentences.

"Well what is your schedule like?" I asked him. The school bell rang and he swiped his text book into his bag and left. I felt my face get hot from the annoyance I was feeling.

"You coming, Mags?" a familiar voice said from the doorway. My boyfriend, Leon Baxter, was smiling his trademark goofy smile. His dark curly hair was slightly damp; he must have been lifting in his free period and decided to take a shower. Mags was the nickname he gave me because when we first met, a whole bunch of old magazines fell out of my bag. But that's a story for a different time.

"Yeah, just give me a sec," I stood up from the table I was at and noticed a book on the floor. "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. I guessed it must be Kennedy's so I made a note to return it to him later.

"How was class? Who did you get partnered with?"

"Kennedy Valentine," I said with a shrug and a very plain smile.

"That sucks. Maybe you can get Mr. Sorenson to assign you a new partner. Valentine is the worst."

"He's not that bad," I said as I got closer and grabbed Leon's hand.

"He's dumb as a box of biscuits. Not to mention that he's so rude all the time," he continued.

"Rude or closed off? There's a difference," I leaned my head against his bicep as we exited the science room.

"Is there? Is there really? The guys on the team try to invite him to stuff but he always just says no and then walks off. Like, just be social for a minute, ya know?" he said before opening up his locker and grabbing out his geometry book.

"He's probably just introverted and he gets socially exhausted being around extroverts like yourself."

"That's what I love about you, my little moon haired beauty. You always see the best in people, even when there's nothin good to see."

"There is always some good in everyone," I protested as we started toward my next class, which was home ec.

"That's very idealistic of you, Mags," Leon kissed the top of my head and then went off in the opposite direction.

Down the hall I noticed Kennedy sneaking out a side door. I decided to give him his book back and also to see what he was up to. He was climbing onto his motorcycle when I ran up beside him.

"Here," I said holding out the novel, "you left this in class."

"That's not mine," he said. He was lying. I could tell.

"Oh, my mistake," I slipped the book back into my backpack, "where are you going?"

"Not sure," he shrugged and leaned back.

"Okay well, drive safe. The road can be a very dangerous place for a biker," I smiled, turned on my heel, and started back toward the school.

"You wanna come with?"

I whirled around, shocked at the offer, "I have class."

"So skip."

"Where are we going?"

"Like I said, not sure," he pulled a second helmet out of a compartment on the back and held it out, "well?"

I shrugged. What did I have to lose? "Let's go."

KENNEDY

I started up my motorcycle while Aspen Willow put on his helmet. I'm not really sure what possessed me to invite him along. Maybe it was the fact that regardless of how blatantly rude I was being, he was still being nice. Maybe it was because he looked like he could use a little adventure in his life. Whatever it was, it was a funny feeling when he climbed on the back of my bike.

"Hold on, dude, it's gonna be a bumpy ride," I said, turning slightly so he could hear me better. His soft, tan arms snaked around my stomach and his chest pressed up against my back. I stiffened at the strange feel of a guy on me like that.

"Maybe not so close, just hold my hips with your hands," I said with a laugh.

"Oh, right. Sorry to make you uncomfortable," Aspen said as he scooted back. I chuckled and sped off toward our destination. I decided to take him to the old boxcar in the middle of Cherrywick Woods. It was a place where a lot of local kids used to go but then one day it was just abandoned, so I kind of made it my own. I drove the bike till I couldn't anymore and parked on the edge of the woods.

"So where is it that we are going?" Aspen asked anxiously as he ran his hands through his silvery blonde hair to tame it after wearing a helmet.

"It's a surprise," I smiled devilishly and walked into the woods, a chill picking up in the wind. I saw Aspen shiver from the corner of my eye as he wrapped his arms tighter to his chest. He was only wearing a thin black sweater with a peter pan collar and some black shorts. He had to be freezing in this weather.

"So what kind of plants should we use?" I asked nonchalantly as we stalked through the woods.

"I was thinking ivy plants because they grow rapidly and this way, we will be able to document it easily, the changes they make depending on music," he replied.

"I'll talk to Nona tonight about it then."

"Who?"

"My grandma. She owns that flower shop on the corner of Main and Saber. I bet she will have some ivies around from summer," I shrugged and continued onward, stepping over a large fallen tree.

"That's perfect!" Aspen said excitedly, "I was really worried you were going to make me do the whole thing by myself."

"Geez, give me some credit," I laughed, "but I guess I didn't really make it seem like I was gonna help at all."

"That's okay. I'm sure you have a good reason for being cold and aloof," he said. Out of my peripheral vision I saw his hand fly up to his mouth and he looked at me so I glanced his way.

"What?"

"That came out so wrong. I didn't mean to imply-"

"Meh, you're not wrong, Aspen. I am cold and aloof," I shrugged as we continued onward. It was funny how he was so worried he would hurt my feelings with that. He was such a nice guy. We walked over crunchy, bright fall leaves. I watched him look around in awe, like he was seeing the world for the very first time and I grinned.

"We're almost there," I said, pulling a big branch out of the way.

"Where did you say we were going, again?"

"Nice try, Aspen, but I believe I said it was a surprise."

As soon as he stepped past the branch we were standing in front of the huge boxcar with a million tags from various graffiti artists. It was old and made of wood, some of which was decaying on the corners. The door was closed but I pulled it back and climbed up inside.

"What is this place? I've never been out here before!" he said excitedly. He struggled to get his small frame up into the structure. I reached out a hand and he grabbed hold and I effortlessly pulled him up. I grabbed the gas lamp from off an old coffee table and lit it with a match from the matchbox next to it.

After the lamp was lit I opened up the old steamer trunk I had against the wall and pulled out an old wool blanket.

"Here, you look cold," I said, tossing it down next to him and then sitting down on the couch that was against the opposite door.

"Oh thank you, I am freezing!" he chuckled, "Shorts was not my smartest idea today."

I laughed as he scurried across the floor and up onto the couch next to me.

"I secretly noticed those crates in the corner over there," Aspen said with a sly smile, "there are only two things I can think of that would be in them and that would be comics or vinyl. So which is it?"

"Comics," I chuckled nervously and scratched the back of my neck. Then I got up and went over to pull some out to show him.

ASPEN

That night I sat on my bed, reading through my English text book. Cypress came in and sat on the foot of my bed.

Aside from our moon blonde hair, tan skin, and sparkling blue eyes, we looked nothing alike. He was tall and broad like an ox and I was short and small framed. He played every sport in the book and I was more about the academics of school. I was on the debate team and in the gardener's league. Cy was all about girls and obviously I liked boys. He was always into a new girl and super flirty. I was the absolute worst at flirting and the only one I ever did it with was Leon.

"Where were you for final period? I was gonna give you a ride home but Carlee Grimes said you weren't in Home Ec."

"Oh well I-"

"Before you finish the lie you're about to tell, I know you weren't at a club meeting because Debate is on Thursdays and Gardener's League got cancelled tonight."

Curses, he knew me so well! He could always tell when I was about to lie, even before I opened my mouth, I honestly don't know why I even tried to anymore.

"I skipped," I shrugged.

"YOU skipped?" he asked incredulously.

"Is it really that hard to believe?" I sat back, annoyed.

"Yes. You are the queen of perfect attendance. You begged Dad to let you go to school when you had the flu in third grade, remember?" he crossed his arms and raised his right eyebrow.

"Well I skipped class and went out to a boxcar in the woods."

"You went to the old boxcar? With whom? No one goes out there anymore. Not since the murder that happened out there."

"Eek! A murder?!" I asked, suddenly feeling very spooked that I had gone out there and not known a thing about it. I wondered if Kennedy knew about it?

"Yeah, there was like a guy walking home one night and some other guy offered him a ride. Well the guy getting the ride noticed they weren't going to his house so when the driver stopped, he bolted from the car. He got all the way to the box car when he got a knife to the back. Then the driver sliced him open and hung him up by his intestines above the box car."

"Oh my god, that's not true at all!" I said, hoping he had made the whole story up.

"It is too. I can't help but notice that you're stalling about telling me who you went with to the boxcar. I mean, I know it wasn't Leon because he was lifting with me tonight."

"Well aren't we a little Nancy Drew this evening?" I said, still stalling. I knew that he hated Kennedy and I didn't want to get yelled at for hanging out with him outside of our project.

"I went alone."

"Try again," he pursed his lips.

I sighed, "Kennedy Valentine."

"What the bliz?! Why would you be hanging out with that trash bag?"

"He's really not a trash bag-" I began but Cypress cut me off.

"You've never been in a sport with the tool! He's so rude!"

"Because he doesn't want to go to the after parties and all that?"

"Well not just that, there is a lot about Kennedy that you don't know!"

"I mean he made it back in time for football practice with you guys, so I don't really see what the problem is," I crossed my arms, "besides, he and I are doing the science project together so we decided to go brainstorm together." It wasn't a complete lie so he couldn't catch me. At least I didn't think so.

"Yeah, well I think you should talk to Mr. Sorenson and see if he will re-partner you. You shouldn't be around that dick yacht," he said angrily at the ceiling as he flopped backwards onto my bed.

"I'm not gonna do that. Kennedy is smart and we are going to get the first prize for best project," I said smugly, challenging my twin. He sat up eyes narrowed, face red. He stood and stormed out, slamming the door behind him so hard it shook the wall. I wasn't about to let him or Leon or anyone decide my opinion of Kennedy. I would form an opinion on my own and I didn't need either of them telling me who they think I should and should not hang out with.

AUTHORS NOTE After what seems like a million years, I finally got out of my writer's block and I'm ready to tell the story of Aspen and Kennedy. As you can tell, the point of view is going to switch between the two characters and some chapters may be more Aspen centered and some will be more Kennedy centered. As a forewarning, sex will not happen very early in the story if at all. This is more of a love story and less of a jerking story. I hope to post a new chapter every week. Also, I am currently in the search for a new editor. Anyone who has free time to read and edit my chapter every week, preferably before Wednesdays. You would need to highlight each typo or gramattical error so that I can see what I need to improve and what I need to fix. Anyone who is interested, send me a file of this first chapter edited and I will pick the very best one and give credit to them next week! Hope to hear from you soon! Kisses!!! =^.^= Kit
