Chapter 7
I guess in our minds we had committed ourselves to each other for life. Sex was great now and without guilt, but it was also different despite the fact that some times we were just horny as hell there was always a feeling of what can I give to my partner to make him happy.
One week until Bastian’s birthday and I finally figured out what I wanted to give him but it required his participation and photographic skills.
“Bastian, I need a favor.”
“Name it,” he said as we lay in each other’s arms.
“Tomorrow is Saturday and I want you to take some color studio pictures of us – you and me.”
“Sure.”
“You have to develop them tomorrow, color sides.”
“Hmmm. Okay. It will only be my second time developing color sides so I’m not going to promise that they will be the greatest.”
“I am.” I gave him a kiss on the lips.
“And what else?”
“Huh?” I kissed him again a little more passionately.
“Leo, what’s the catch?”
“Catch? What makes you think there’s a catch?” I kissed him really passionately, but he broke the kiss.
He giggled. “Cuz you always kiss like that when you want something…special.”
“Really…” I giggled. Caught! “Well, I want us to be almost naked.”
“You’re not planning on selling these pictures, are you?”
“NO! Although, I do know a lot of girls who’d pay a lot of money for a look at Sebbie standing up straight,” I laughed.
“Come on, what are you planning?”
“I can’t tell you right now. It’s nothing bad or nasty. You’ll like what I have planned when I’m done. Please don’t ask me any more. Just do it for me. Please.”
Bastian agree and I soon fell asleep.
The next day we were at the museums studio and Bastian set up the lighting and camera. He locked the studio door. We took off our shirts and pants and carefully placed our clothes within easy reach and we were both wearing loafers. All we had on were our socks as neither of us had
“So what do you want here?”
“Well, the first few how about us lying on the sheet on our bellies, naked and close together.”
Bastian adjusted the lighting with me lying on the sheet, which was on a table. The first few shots had just enough light to see the out lines of our bodies. Next, lots of white light and a couple of shots of us kissing and our bodies’ intertwined.
Then a couple of us standing facing each other, about to kiss, kissing.
Finally, just before the end of the roll Bastian took a picture of us lying down on our bellies but close up so you only saw us bare from the middle of the back up Bastian on the left side of frame and I was on right side. I think we were but really into the mood. I know I was. We were about to kiss and he shot it, which startled both of us.
“Sorry, Leo, I meant to wait until we actually kissed. Well, one last shot.”
We got dressed and straightened up the studio then went to the darkroom.
An hour later I had two boxes of sides to look thru.
“So, what are you going to do with these?” he asked again.
“I can’t tell you and won’t until later. You just have to trust me.”
When I got home I searched through the slides and as it turned out the flubbed shot was the one I wanted – it was perfect! Now all I had to do was create a reason to not come home until 9pm every night until Bastian’s birthday. Luckily that didn’t take me too long to figure out and on Monday the first thing I did when I got to school was to visit my art teacher cuz she was really a neat person. I think she new that I was queer, well I figured after this she’d probably know I was.
“Mrs. Andersen, I would like to do a special project to uh help my grade uh extra credit. Do you think I could do that?”
“Leo, you don’t need any extra credit. You are the top of all my classes.”
“Oh,” I said dejectedly. Fuck that was my only plan! I slowly turned around to leave trying to think of what else to try.
“Leo?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“What was your project?”
“I wanted to paint a picture in oils. I only really need an excuse.”
“What do you mean?”
“Bastian’s birthday is in a week and a half I wanted to paint a picture for him; for his birthday present. I can’t paint it at home I thought I could just tell everyone I had a special art project and then paint here last period and after school.”
“How long after school?”
“Oh a couple of hours. I’ve never work that much with oils, well I never worked with oils at all…but I know I could pick it up pretty quickly.”
“Well, do you have an idea of what you want to paint?”
“Yes ma’am. This,” I said handling her the slide.
She looked at the slide then at me and then back to the slide, “Hmmm. You two are quite handsome…hmmmm,” she looked at me, “Leo, you don’t have to answer this question if you don’t want to because it is simply my own curiosity, but is your relationship with Bastian more than just good friends.”
I was a little frightened by what she asked but something told me to be honest with her.
“Yes.”
She smiled. “He must be very special to you.”
“Yes, ma’am the most special person in my life.”
“I can see that. This slide is exceptional in itself – I can only imagine what you will produce. Leo you are a very special person and even though you don’t need extra credit it would seem wrong to penalized your willingness to create.”
“You mean I can do it?”
“Yes.”
“Thank you! Oh! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” I was so excited.
She smiled, “You’re welcomed. Now I have some other work to do.”
For the next week and a half I worked on the painting getting it just right. Mrs. Andersen was the only one who saw the work. She was fantastic and we became good friends. She helped me with understanding a lot about working with oils. She heaped tons of praise on me which also helped my confidence.
I really opened up to her about Bastian and how I loved him. I asked her if it bothered her me always talking about him. She said no that she loved listening to me because it was so neat to hear about two people who were so in love. She agreed with me that Bastian and I were soulmates.
The closer it got to Bastian’s birthday the more excited he became and the more pressure he put on me to find out what I was doing. He had guessed that what I was doing was something to do with his birthday and the slides he took. Somehow I manage to steel myself against his pleas.
Finally the day arrived and I was a nervous wreck. I began to worry. What-if Bastian didn’t like it? The more I looked at the finished painting the more flaws I could see. I was getting more and more upset. A week and a half of hard work trying to get it perfect and now I looked at it and it was so amateurish! How could I even consider I had talent? I felt like I had failed yet again. I knew Bastian would hate it. It just wasn’t good enough. And that set me off into tears. I sat down on a chair and sobbed.
I felt a hand gently place on my shoulder. “Leo, what wrong?” asked Beth Andersen.
“My painting is awful,” I cried, “Bastian’s going to hate it. I just can’t do anything right!”
“Leo, why do you do this to yourself? That painting is one of the best I have ever seen. It is so beautiful! It communicates love like nothing I have ever seen before.”
“But I can see flaws! I could do it better. I could make it perfect! I have to make it perfect for Bastian!”
“Leo, Leo look at me!” she commanded. I obeyed. “Leo, we all are our own worst critics. What you see as a flaw only you will see. Remember this art is nothing but a form of communication, technique is important but only to the degree it helps to communicate your message to the viewer beyond that it serves no purpose. Don’t let the techniques ever overpower or become more important than the message because if you do you will never be satisfied and because what you will be doing is not communicating a message but communicating a technique and only artists could possibly be interested in that.”
“Come here.” I followed her over to my painting. “Now close your eyes. Pretend you have never seen this painting – someone else has painted it. Someone you don’t know. Okay? Can you do that?”
“I’ll try.”
“Ok when I tell you to open your eyes look at this painting and tell me what is its message. Remember, you’ve never seen it before. Open your eyes.”
I opened my eyes. I couldn’t help but smile. She was right.
“Well?”
“Love,” I all but whispered.
She smiled. “Good. You know what I see? I see a love so intense, especially from this guy here.” She pointed to me in the picture.
I blushed and she laughed.
Beth gave me a ride home with the painting. The house was empty because everyone was at the Mexican Inn. I decided that I wanted Bastian to see it without others around. Then he could decide whom he wanted to show the painting to if anyone. It was for him.
I think she was a little disappointed because she wanted to see Bastian’s reaction to the painting, but she understood. I quickly changed clothes and we were on our way to the party.
The dinner party consisted of Dick and Mary, Beth Andersen, Tina, Bastian, our parents and me.
Beth presented Bastian with her gift.
“Thank you, Mrs. Andersen. This I really didn’t expect!” exclaimed Bastian.
“It’s actually a complement to another gift you are getting.”
“It’s very light,” he commented as he took the package.
“Well, that’s because it’s an empty box,” I laughed, “Ooops!”
Beth just rolled her eyes.
“Your Leo is something else, Bastian,” she said. It was the way she said it. ‘Your Leo’ I blushed a bit but I also felt a sense of pride. I was his Leo.
Bastian looked at me then at her then back at me. “Yes, he is my Leo and he is the best of the best of the best of everything.”
“You’re right there…” she gave me a wry smile then looked back at Bastian, “The only thing I don’t like about Leo is his inability to make me a fly on the wall.”
“Huh?”
“I tried to talk him into bring his present here, but he refused. I wanted to see your reaction.” She sighed dramatically, “But then I’m just a hopeless romantic!”
Bastian blushed. I blushed and everyone else giggled.
“Thanks, Beth, like I really want the whole world to know about us I mumbled.”
Of course being a teacher she heard my comment. Teachers I’m sure get trained in deciphering mumbles. She just smiles and stuck her tongue out at me.
I don’t think I saw Bastian finish a meal any faster than he did. I of course was the last to finish and had to put up with his banter to get me to eat faster. I was purposely going slowly at one point and everyone was l getting his or her laughs off at his anxiousness.
Finally, I finished and he grabbed my hand and we rushed home to our room.
“Don’t turn on the light,” I said as I guided him over to the covered painting. “Close your eyes and don’t open them until I say to. In fact turn around and don’t peek.” He obeyed. I uncovered the painting and turn on the lighting Beth had bought.
“Turn around and look.” I said nervously holding my breath.
Bastian turned. I heard him gasp slightly. He stared at the picture for a few moments, his bottom lip quiver and he turned to face me. His mouth was moving but no sound came out tears were rolling down his cheeks as he pulled me into a hug.
“My Leo. You are one of a kind. It’s so beautiful because it was us that created it and it shows our love for each other. This was the most special moment in my life you turn my accidental photo into a work of art that no master artist could have done. You are so precious and I love you.”
What followed was the most awesome kiss and the most pleasurable night we had ever shared.
++++
I think Bastian has been good for me. My grades in school have improved and for the first time in my entire life I’m actually making all A’s and B’s. For show Bastian and I double dated occasionally always a different girl we meaning the girls and us always had a great time but neither Bastian nor I ever went further than holding hands or a kiss on the cheek with the girls.
You know the letter from John in England? Well, it turned out to be just a happy birthday letter. Bastian told me all about his encounter with John in Colorado. We decided to write him a letter and tell him of our commitment to each other and sent him a photo of my painting. I began to think that perhaps we’d upset him because he didn’t reply, but Bastian said it was just John he was terrible at replying to letters.
It was the beginning of May before we got a reply. John was delighted and said he couldn’t wait to meet me someday. This really got me thinking and one night as we bathed in the after-glow of sex.
“Bastian?”
“Yes, my love.”
“I was thinking…I’d like to meet John,” I said turning on my side and looking into Bastian’s eyes, “Actually I want to go to England and Europe this summer with you…sort of like a honeymoon. Whatcha think?”
“I think I love you. Hmmm…England…Europe…honeymoon… But how do you propose we get there? Hitchhike?”
“I don’t know. But if we could find a way are you game?”
“Well, yes, I guess,” he said not terribly convincingly.
“What?” I asked.
“Well, I was planning on going to summer school again. You know because then I’ll have enough credits to go to college in September.”
“Oh, yeah, I forgot about that…” I forced a smile the turned over on my side facing away from him. I dreaded him going to college because there were no decent colleges here, which meant he’d be going away. I would be stuck here. I don’t think I could stand being separated from Bastian. I could feel the tears coming. I got up, “I have to pee.”
I closed the bathroom door and sat down on the rim of the bathtub. Seconds later there was a light tap at the door, “Leo, let me in,” he whispered.
“I’m on the john.”
“No you’re not. You’re sitting on the side of the bathtub.”
“How do you know?”
“Cuz I know you’re upset with me. Now please open the door.”
I let him in and closed the door. I turned around to go sit down but Bastian was standing in front of me. He pulled me into a hug and as much as I didn’t want to cry I couldn’t help it. Not sobs just tears fell from my eyes, rolled down my cheeks and on to his shoulder. He just held me not saying anything.
“It’s about me going to college isn’t it?”
I nodded my head and held on to him tighter.
“Then I’m not going to go. Leo…two years ago I was lonely and miserable and all I could think about was getting away – go to college because there was something missing from my life and maybe I’d find it there. Well, I found what was missing – you. I don’t even know what I want to study if I did go. When you came in here it suddenly dawned on me I’d have to leave you. I can’t do that. I can’t live without you.”
I pulled back to look at him. He smiled and kissed me. Then he broke the kiss, “And besides it will be great to not have to go to school for once and just spend the summer doing stuff I love to do…making love to you and photography.”
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yep. Now how are we going to get to England and Europe?”
“Hitchhike.”
He smiled and kissed the tip of my nose. “Let’s go back to bed.”
I woke before Bastian and after taking my morning pee I went to kitchen when I found Mom and Dad at the breakfast table.
“Mornin’,” I mumbled as I pour myself a cup of coffee.
“Morning, Leo,” they said half staring at me. I quickly checked to make sure little Leo wasn’t poking out of my boxers. He wasn’t.
“What?”
“Were you an Bastian arguing last night?”
“Huh? Oh, no. I got upset but we handled it…Dad, if you wanted to go to England and didn’t have any money or much how would you get there?”
“Hmmm, well I don’t know if you can still do it but when I was younger you used to be able to work your way across on a ship; you know as a cabin boy or cook’s helper. Why? You planning a trip?”
“Sort of…I was thinking last night about it and we’d like to go to Europe and England this summer. I read that it cheap to travel around once you get there, you know staying in youth hostels and the such.”
“You mean you talked Bastian out of going to summer school?” he asked excitedly.
“Yes.”
“Wow!”
“Why?”
“Because I think he pushing himself to hard to get some place and doesn’t really know where he really wants to go. It’s like college has just been a solution to a problem and not that he has a definite field he wants to major in.”
“I think he realized that last night,” I said.
“So Romeo, why do you want to go?”
I blushed.
Mom to the rescue, “I think Leo wants what I wanted from you before you know what?”
“Oh, a honeymoon.”
“Yeah,” I said and took another sip of coffee.” I expected some comment but got none. Then I played back what Mom had just said. “Hey!” I said as night’s fog cleared from my brain and the caffeine kicked in, “You know what? What is you know what?”
The both blushed! Suddenly, I guess what it was.
“No! Mom, are you like uh, pregnant?”
Mom nodded.
“Wow! I’m going to have a baby brother or sister! WOW! BASTIAN!” I ran out of the kitchen and upstairs.
“BASTIAN! WAKE UP!” I yelled as I ran into our room.
He opened his eyes frowning at me for waking him.
“Bastian! We are having a baby!”
“You’re pregnant?”
“No, silly! Mom is! Mom and Dad did it! They made a baby!”
“WHAT?!”
“We are having a baby brother or sister!”
We both tore down the stairs and congratulated the happy couple, our parents.
On the way to school I told Bastian what Dad had said. He thought for a while then slowly a smile appeared on his face.
