Last Chance for Jason by Squall Thrawn
Chapter 2
Kevin drove home from Steak 'n Shake, only partially concentrating on his driving. 'Jason's gay and he wants to go out with me,' Kevin thought to himself, reflecting on the events of the past few hours. "Jason's gay and he wants to go out with me," said Kevin, repeating himself out loud.
Kevin would have never thought it possible. When he had left the last note, he had never imagined that he would get a response, let alone a response like this. A last ditch effort designed more to ease his mind than to actually attract Jason's attention.
Well, he had gone on his first "date" with Jason, even if it was Steak 'n Shake, and Kevin was ecstatic. After their dinner, Jason had said yes to being Kevin's boyfriend, and they had kissed. And what a kiss it was. Jason's kiss was so much different than Karen's had been. Karen's kiss almost felt like kissing his mother... or his older sister, Jenna. But Jason's kiss? His soft and smooth lips. The masculinity that made men's kisses so much different than a woman's. Kevin licked his lips without realizing it, remembering Jason's kiss.
"Mike is going to totally flip," said Kevin, grinning. He got home a few minutes later and headed to his room and the computer, pausing for a moment to let his parents know he was home. He booted up the computer, and started up America Online as soon as the computer was finished starting up. Luckily, Mike was online.
THRAWN5678: Hey, dude, how're you doing tonight? NYYANKSRUL52: Hey. Not bad. i almost gave up on you tonight! THRAWN5678: Sorry, man. i was at Steak n Shake tonight... THRAWN5678: oh, and do I have news for you!!! NYYANKSRUL52: Oooh!! Do tell!! THRAWN5678: well, I talked to Jason tonight about the note... :-( NYYANKSRUL52: Really? What did he say? THRAWN5678: and he wants to go out with me!! NYYANKSRUL52: No way!!! That's great!!! Way to go, man!! THRAWN5678: I know!! It's great!! We spent a few hours at Steak n Shake, getting to know each other, and at the end of the night, we kissed!!! NYYANKSRUL52: Excellent!!! Congratulations!! I'm really happy for you, man!! THRAWN5678: thanx a lot, dude, for all your advice and support!! i don't know that i could've done it without you!! NYYANKSRUL52: no problem, man!! THRAWN5678: Well, hey, dude, i'm like totally drained tonight. so I'm gonna turn in now.. I just wanted to tell you about Jason... NYYANKSRUL52: alright. I'll talk to you tomorrow, then. And I'll be full of questions then!! Good night!! THRAWN5678: I'm sure you will be!! I'll ttyl, dude!! take care!!
With that, Kevin logged off and got ready for bed. Clad only in a wifebeater and boxers, he got into bed and was out like a light.
Kevin's morning was fairly boring. He was at college from early in the morning till 1 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, Kevin could barely pay attention in class. His thoughts kept coming back to the events the night before. 'Did I just dream it all? Or did it really happen?' thought Kevin as he walked towards his car. Just then, Kevin was surprised when he heard his cell phone ringing. He rarely got calls on his cell phone, and never at this time. He assumed it was Bill, bored out of his mind. Or maybe his mother, asking him to grab a gallon of milk from the store or something.
"Hello?" said Kevin.
"Hi, Kev," said Jason's soft voice.
"Hey, Jason!" said Kevin, happy not only that Jason was calling, but that this confirmed his memories that he and Jason really had hooked up the night before. "What's up?"
"Not much..," sighed Jason. He cleared his throat and continued. "Listen.. I've been thinking..."
Kevin inhaled sharply. 'Is he regretting last night?'
Jason continued. "And I just want to thank you for being so understanding with me." Kevin let out the breath he had been holding. "I mean, I don't know exactly what I'm feeling..." Kevin could hear Jason softly crying.
Kevin was choked up himself, but managed to verbalize his words clearly. "Jase.. I know how you feel.. I was so confused myself when I was in your shoes. Listen. Once you get off of school, why don't you come over to my house? We can talk about all this, in private. All the things we should have talked about last night, but I thought that being in public like that was too risky."
"That sounds good, Kev," said Jason, his voice coming in stronger. Kevin gave Jason the directions to his house. "I guess I need to get back to class," said Jason, in an amused tone. Kevin could visualize that shy grin of Jason's that he loved so much.
"Where are you, exactly?" asked Kevin, curious.
"I'm in the boy's bathroom," said Jason, laughing. "I asked to be excused from class."
"Well, get back to class, then!! We wouldn't want you to get into trouble on my account, now would we," said Kevin, laughing as well.
"I'll talk to you later, Kev," said Jason, his voice soft once more.
"Alright. You take care, Jase," said Kevin, "and I'll see you in a bit." Jason hung up and Kevin turned his phone off as well.
Kevin spent the time after he arrived home cleaning up the house, his room in particular. After all, what sort of impression would he make on Jason if his room was trashed? Twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang. He quickly rushed to the door, and opened it. Outside on the porch, stood Kevin's angel, Jason. Jason walked into the house, smiling at Kevin a little. But Kevin could tell that Jason's insecurities and feelings were still wreaking havoc with his mind. Indeed, his slight smile was gone, and Kevin saw the look of a teenager who had just been tossed in the middle of the ocean with no working compass. Kevin stepped forward and put his arms around Jason, hugging him strongly. Unable to hold his tears any longer, Jason drenched Kevin's shirt front as he cried uncontrollably. Kevin didn't say a word, but just held Jason in his arms. At any other time, Kevin's mind would be full of lewd thoughts, what with him holding the most perfect boy in the world (in his opinion) in his arms. But that was the last thing on Kevin's mind at that moment. All Kevin could think of was showing this scared boy in his arms that it was indeed going to be all right.
Eventually, Jason ran out of tears, or just managed to regain his composure a bit.
"Thanks, Kev," said Jason, his voice muffled since he was being held tightly against Kevin. "I'm just so confused."
"I know.. I've been down that road before," said Kevin, gently smoothing Jason's hair down.
"On one hand, everybody seems to think that being gay is totally wrong. My church says that being gay is a sin. And yet, last night, when I was with you it seemed so right.. I just don't know what to think anymore.."
Kevin gently released Jason from his hug, and held him so that Kevin was looking right at Jason.
"Listen, Jase. I don't claim to know all the answers, but I know what's in my heart. I agonized over this for a long time. People will tell you what they believe, but what matters is what you think. I've heard plenty of people spouting Scripture, trying to use it as a basis for their own beliefs about homosexuality. But the fact that no denomination is exactly the same on their position on the subject says a lot. If the Bible was as straightforward as these Bible-thumpers seem to make it, wouldn't you think that a lot more religions would be counting homosexuality as a major sin? I could get into a debunking session, where I name off all the passages that Bible-thumpers try to use, and counter their arguments, but I won't. What matters most is what you believe. Just consider this: if the love you feel is pure, whether its love for a man or a woman, how can it be wrong? If God is Love, which is what the Bible does state over and over again clearly, how can love between two guys or two girls be wrong?
Kevin sighed and looked down at the floor. It was time he played his last card. All he could do after that was hope and pray.
"Jason... I know you're confused about all this. Like I said, this is one of the most painful things one can go through. So if you want, I'll give you some room. If you feel like you're not ready to be going out with a guy yet, I'll understand. And regardless, I'll still be your friend. I just..." Kevin faltered, then continued. "I don't want to live my life thinking that I forced you into this."
Jason took a deep breath and responded. "Kev, I...."
Aren't I evil? This chapter was a tad short for my tastes, especially compared to that last one, but I felt this was the perfect stopping point. Luckily for all of you, I've already started work on Chapter 3, and it should be out in a few days.. on my website first, naturally...
