You're Still My Boy -- Chapter 4

By: NM

"Dustin, you ready to work up this patient?" Dr. Brooks asked. Nothing. "Dustin, hello? Wake up space cadet?" Dr. Brooks added.

"Hmm, what?" I asked coming out of my daydream.

"Are you ready?" Dr. Brooks asked again.

"Oh, yeah..." My brain finally kicked in. "Now?"

"Yes, now. Why is something the matter?" Dr. Brooks was definitely starting to get annoyed.

"No, nothing's wrong. Let's go," I said.

Dr. Brooks reprimanded me slightly for loosing my concentration as we walked over to Trauma 1.

"Ok, Dustin, give me the bullet," Dr. Brooks said.

"The patient is Mark Hunter. A 19 year old white male. The patient arrived at the ER by ambulance. He was found unconscious and bleeding at home in the bathroom. BP is 120 over 80, O-2 at 98 percent on room air."

"Good start, Dustin. Just keep going," Dr. Brooks encouraged.

"According to his mother, he'd been drinking a lot of water and urinating frequently. He was also frequently fatigued. There was a slight odor on his breath upon exam, but his mother said that he was not a drinker and did not do drugs. There is a two centimeter ulcerative wound on the right big toe. The bleeding is from an 8 centimeter head lac, which he probably got from a fall."

"Nice presentation. Now, what labs would you order?" Dr. Brooks asked.

"CBC, Chem Panel, UA, blood alcohol and a tox screen," I stated.

"Rachel, type and cross for two units and get those labs so we can find out what's wrong with Mr. Hunter," Dr. Brooks smiled. "Also, we need to get a sample from the wound on his toe and have it cultured."

"Why are we getting him blood? The loss was minimal according to the family." I wondered.

"Just a precaution," Dr. Brooks explained.

After 20 minutes or so, the nurse came back with the lab test results.

"Dustin, what are the results?"

"Drug and alcohol both came back negative. He's got a blood glucose of 650, and he's positive ketones in the urine," I reported.

"Ok, so he's drug and alcohol free, but with high blood glucose. What does that indicate?" Dr. Brooks asked.

"The patiently likely has diabetes," I replied.

"Ok, what else do the labs tell you?" Dr. Brooks asked.

"His white count is elevated at 14,000 with a low red count of 3,000. Hemoglobin is 9.4 and Crit is 28.2 percent." I said. "It's a good thing you ordered the blood," I said.

"Good, Dustin, good. Now take a closer look at those blood test results," Dr. Brooks said. "Focus on the white blood cells. What do those numbers tell you?"

"Everything seems to be in order." I said taking a quick glance. "No, wait! The neutrophil levels are elevated, that's a good sign of bacterial infection," I replied.

"So the kid's diabetic, anemic and he has an infection," Dr. Brooks said.

"The wound on his toe!" I exclaimed. "That's why you're having it cultured. It's the most likely site of infection."

"Exactly," Dr. Brooks agreed.

"Well, isn't he just a barrel of monkeys," I sighed.

"Dr. Brooks, we need you in Exam Two," a nurse said entering the room.

"Dustin, monitor his vitals, have the nurses keep watch and get back out there. With Dr. Snider gone to a conference we've gotten backed up," Dr. Brooks said leaving me alone in the room.

"Oh boy, fun time," I groaned finishing up the patient's chart.

"Thanks see you tomorrow," I said to Rachel as I left the hospital after another fun-filled day of work and learning. It was a beautiful day. Though the sun was beginning to set, it was still warm outside. A gentle breeze blew in the wind. My walk to the parking lot was slow as I began thinking about the past few days. My mind floated to Kevin and the guys' arrival in LA and mine and Kevin's reunion. It was at that moment my cell phone rang. I pulled my backpack around and fished my cell phone out of it quickly before it could stop ringing. "Hello?"

"Hey Dustin," That deep voice of his spoke.

"Kev, what's going on?" I asked pulling my keys out of my bag as well as I got to my car.

"Not much, I just got back from a shopping trip with Howie and Nick. Wanted to call and see how your day was," He said. I could practically hear him smiling on the other end of the phone.

"My day was ok. Another day at the hospital," I said as I opened my car door and slid inside the driver seat. I tossed my backpack into the passenger side and put the key in the ignition and started the car. "So, do you have any plans tonight?" I asked as I put my seatbelt on.

"No, why?" Kevin asked.

"I wanted to know if you'd like to go out tonight. Maybe dinner and a movie or something?" I offered.

"Dustin that sounds great. I'd love too," Kevin replied.

"Great!"

"We've got a radio interview in an hour, how about I swing by your place and pick you up around eight. Then we can just decide from there. And if you don't wanna see a movie then maybe we can just stay in watching TV, cuddling and talking?" Kevin whispered.

"That sounds wonderful, Kev," I smiled at the thought of just staying in, curled up under a blanket with my lover. Familiar thoughts started coursing through my brain. My smile seemed to grow even bigger than it already was, if that were at all possible.

"Ok, I'll call you when I get out of the interview," Kevin said.

"Ok, I'll talk to you then. Bye, Kevin," I said.

"See ya Dustin," Kevin said.

The line went silent, but it didn't matter. I wasn't sad that he wasn't on the phone anymore. I was still so thrilled to have him back in my life again. Part of me still wonders how I ever broke things off so many years ago.

I carefully backed out of my parking space and headed home to my apartment. It was time to have a talk with Jason. It had been a week since Kevin and I officially got back together and I still hadn't told him. Boy was I going to be in for it when he finds out I waited this long to tell him. Kyle and Davie were going to be equally pissed, too. Oh well, no sense in fretting over it, everything will all be out in the open in a little while anyways.

Then my thoughts drifted to David. Oh man, how was he going to take this? How would I tell him? Should I even tell him at all? Yes, I had to tell him. I shouldn't have even considered not telling him. He's my friend. I just hope he'd understand.

I unlocked the door and shut it as I kicked my shoes off. I set my backpack down on the couch in the living room and carried the mail into the kitchen, placing it on the table. I grabbed bottled water from the refrigerator and turned down the hallway to my room.

"Hey Jason, I'm ho..."

"AHHH!" I heard a scream.

"Oh shit! Man Jase, I'm soooo sorry," I apologized. Apparently, Jason wasn't alone in the room when I walked in. "I'll just be in the living room," I said shutting the door.

I walked back to the living room and sunk into the couch. I reached for the remote and turned the TV on, while also turning the volume up much louder than I would normally have it.

After a few minutes Jason and his guest emerged from our room, fully clothed with his guest looking rather embarrassed. "Jase, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you had company," I apologized.

"Don't worry about it, shit happens," He replied casually.

"So, Jeff, can I give you a call later?" Jason asked his friend.

"That'd be great," Jeff replied.

Jason leaned in, kissing the guy gently on his lips. He opened the door. "I'll see you later."

"Bye, Jason."

Once the guy was gone Jason shut the door. "Man, you owe me big time!" Jason joked as he plopped down on the couch next to me.

"Hey, I already apologized. You two could have very well finished up what you were doing. I came in here and had the volume up...wouldn't have heard a thing," I tried to play innocent.

"Dustin that wholesome, innocent deal never seemed to work very well for you. I don't know how people still fall for it after all this time," Jason joked.

"I'm just a master at deception like that," I smiled back. "It's a gift."

"Riiight," Jason laughed.

"So, what are you doing home so early on a weekend guy? Thought for sure you'd be out partying it up," I said.

"The party came home early," Jason grinned as he spoke.

"TMI, man!" I pretended to be shocked.

"So, what are you doing home already?" Jason asked turning the questions towards me.

"Oh, I'm uh...well, I'm..."

"Awwww, this is so cute!" Jason squealed in a high-pitched voice. "My `lil boy's got himself a date!" Jason clapped his hands together and jumped up. He grabbed my arm and pulled me down the hall to our room. "You'll have to excuse the mess in my part of the room," he joked. He sat me down on my bed and walked over to our closet, and threw open the door. "Now, exactly what type of date is this?"

"Well, I think it's just gonna be dinner and maybe a movie," I replied.

"Dinner and a movie," Jason sighed sweetly.

"Grow up, cornball," I laughed.

Jason began to rummage through my closet for things to wear. "I can dress myself, ya know?" I told him.

"Boy, you haven't been out on an actual date in God knows how long. Let me get you ready for it," Jason stated.

"Fine, whatever," I conceded to him.

"So, who is the hottie that's taking you out?" Jason asked as he pulled various shirts and pants from the closet for me to try on.

"Uh...well, it's uh...it's funny you should ask," I said.

Jason stopped his quest of finding me the perfect outfit and turned around to face me. "Dustin." The sound of his voice meant business. I could tell he wanted to know who I would be going out with and he wanted to know right now.

"Jason, I think you'll be mad when you find out who it is," I said quietly.

"Dustin, I won't get mad at you...not unless you give me a reason to, that is," He said.

"It's not David, is it?" Jason asked.

"No, it's not David," I answered him.

"Well, then who is it?" He asked. "I mean, with you're work schedule it's not like you have the time to meet anyone..."

"OH MY GOD!" Jason screamed. "You met someone at work! Is he cute? I bet he's cute? So, what does he do? It's not that doctor supervisor of yours, is it? What type of doctor is he? Or is it a nurse? There are some pretty hot nurses in that hospital of yours," He smiled.

"It's not someone I met from work," I interrupted him.

"Well then, if it's not someone new and not someone from work then it has to be someone from...before," Jason finally realized who I was talking about before he finished his sentence. "When did this happen?"

"About a week ago," I answered.

"A week ago?" Jason asked incredulously. "It happened a week ago and you're just now telling me?"

"I can't really talk about it much, but I saw him, and we started talking and then...poof, we're back together," I explained. "Well, maybe not exactly poof, but you get the idea."

"You saw him in the hospital didn't you?" Jason guessed. "Oh come on Dustin. I mean it was all over the news about him being there."

"So, you two are back together, huh?" Jason asked.

"Yeah, we are," I answered. "And I'm really sorry for not telling you sooner."

"It's fine. As long as you're happy...that's all that matters to me," Jason smiled. "But if he ever hurts ya..."

"Thanks Jason, you're the best friend ever!" I said grabbing him and pulling him into a tight, friendly embrace.

"So, who made the first move, again?" He asked resuming his search for the perfect outfit.

"There wasn't really a first move, per say...things just kinda fell back into place between us," I replied.

"So it was like you guys never broke up?" He asked satisfied with the choices he'd pulled out.

"Well, I wouldn't say that," I stated. "But after seeing him and stuff...it all just came rushing back, ya know? All the feelings, the memories--they just flooded my mind."

"Awww," Jason sighed. "What time is he coming to pick you up?" he asked. "He BETTER be picking you up!"

"He said he was gonna call when..." My sentence was interrupting from the sound of my cell phone ringing.

I fished the phone out of my pocket. "Hello?"

"Hey Dustin, it's me," Kevin spoke. "We got out of the interview a little early, so is it ok I swing by now and pick you up?" Kevin asked.

"Sure, that'll be fine," I answered. I gave him the directions and then hung up.

"Jason, he's coming now!" I panicked. "And I'm not ready!"

"It's ok, be calm," Jason said. "Ok, you jump in the shower real quick and I'll get your clothes ready and stall a little if I need to when he gets here."

"Ok." With that, I bolted for the bathroom and hopped in the shower getting ready for my date with Kevin. As I finished showering I realized this would be like a first date again. So much has happened in both of our lives that we needed to get to know each other all over again. I got out of the shower and ran to my room and pulled on the clothes Jason had laid out for me. I ran back into the bathroom and fixed my hair with some gel and making it look somewhat messy. As soon as I finished in the bathroom I heard the buzzer. I also heard Jason yell "come on up."

Grabbed some of my Abercrombie & Fitch cologne and applied two sprays. I took one last look at myself in the mirror. `Damn, Jason. You sure know how to dress people.'

Jason had picked out a pair of my A&F jeans that sit really low on my waist. My shirt was just a plain white t-shirt and Jason had me throw on my brown suede jacket on top of that.

When I came into the living room, Kevin was already inside talking pleasantly with Jason. When he saw me his jaw practically fell to the floor.

"Wow, Dustin, you look great!" Kevin smiled as he came up to me. His lips met mine briefly. He took a step back and took my hand in his.

"You two have fun now," he smiled. "Kevin, have him back by midnight," He joked.

I turned around giving him a devilish grin. "We'll see."

"Damn, Dustin, you look great!" Kevin said again as we walked down the Santa Monica Pier talking.

"What, I didn't look great in the hospital in scrubs and a white lab coat covered in patients' bodily fluids?" I asked in fake hurt.

"Even then you still looked good," Kevin smiled, his hand brushing mine as we walked. There was a brief moment of silence. "What kind of bodily fluids were you covered in exactly?"

I didn't answer him; only smiled and continued our walk down the Pier. "Hey Kev?"

"Yeah, Dustin?"

"What do you say about riding the ferris wheel?"

Kevin smiled, "I'd say let's do it."

With that, Kevin and I got in the line for the ferris wheel and waited patiently, continuing to chat until it was our turn. As the ferris wheel went around in its circle, I allowed my hand to take hold of Kevin's. I looked over it him, gently squeezing his hand and smiling. "What are you smiling at beautiful?" Kevin asked as he smiled back to me.

"You. Us. This," I replied. "I'm just really happy now," I said. The ferris wheel stopped with us at the top so I scooted closer to Kevin. "Is this ok?"

"Definitely," Kevin grinned. He leaned down carefully, capturing my lips with his. The kiss continued to grow and deepen, until we began moving. It was only then that I pulled back and created a little bit of space between our bodies.

"I love you, Dustin," Kevin whispered.

"Love you too, Kev." The ferris wheel came to a stop again, this time with us at the bottom and getting off.

"Anything you wanna do next?" Kevin asked as we strolled down the pier.

"I am kinda hungry," I told him.

"We can eat at Rusty's Surf Ranch," Kevin suggested, "It's pretty good."

"Great, let's go," I replied.

We walked to the restaurant and were seated practically immediately even though there was a short wait. That is definitely one of the perks of being with a celebrity. We were seated and after a few minutes our waitress came to our table.

"How are you two gentlemen tonight?" she asked.

"We're hungry," I replied.

"Well then, you've come to the right place," She smiled. "Can I start you off with some drinks and an appetizer or are you two ready to order?"

"I'm ready, Kev. Are you?" I asked.

"Go ahead," He gestured.

"I'm gonna have your Cowabunga Burger and fries with a Corona and slice of lime please," I requested.

"You look old enough, but do you have ID?" She asked.

I pulled out my wallet showing her my driver's license. "Thanks hon," She smiled. "And what about you sir?"

"I'll take the Caribbean Jerk Chicken Sandwich with fries and a Corona with lime also," Kevin requested holding up his ID. "And can we get an order of your chips and salsa, too?"

"Sure thing. I'll get your drinks and chips out and put your orders in," She said.

"Thanks," I told her before she walked away to place our order. A few minutes later, she returned with our drinks and chips. Kevin continued to tell me what he did during the guys' break and ending his last relationship.

"So, why did you break it off with him, Kev?" I asked. "Don't get me wrong...I'm really glad you did, but I was just curious," I explained. "Unless you don't wanna talk about it."

"No, we can talk about it," Kevin answered. "Basically, it all came down to love," He said. "I was never in love with him. I knew I wasn't and wouldn't ever be."

"Oh."

"The way I figured, if I wasn't in love with him, then I shouldn't string him along. It would just end up hurting him more," Kevin went on. "He was a great guy, really, I just don't love him."

There was a brief moment of silence, and then Kevin spoke up. "And then, when he found out we were going to get back in the studio and working again, he didn't think he could handle all the time apart with me doing promotions and possibly another tour."

"So it was almost like a mutual break-up then?" I asked.

"I guess you could call it that," Kevin nodded. "I think on some level we both knew things weren't working out. And that it wouldn't be fair to either of us."

"I remember how hard it was for us," I agreed. "But, we made it work before, and we can do it again," I smiled at him.

Around this time our waitress brought us another round of drinks with our food.

"How's the burger?" Kevin asked as he put a fry in his mouth.

"Great. How's your chicken sandwich?" I asked.

"Not bad," He grinned, taking a bite out of it.

Our conversation was ceased for a few minutes while we both ate our dinner. Then Kevin spoke up. "Dustin, are you planning on telling Brian we're back together?"

"I think we have to, Kev," I paused to take a sip of my Corona. "It would be dishonest not to tell him."

"When do you think we should tell him?" Kevin asked.

"Let me tell him, ok. I think he could handle it better coming from just me and not the two of us. I don't want him to think we're flaunting it in his face or anything," I explained.

"Ok," Kevin agreed.

"So, how is the internship going?" Kevin asked, shifting the topic to something a bit more pleasant.

"As good as can be expected for working in an Emergency Department," I replied.

"It's really fast paced. There aren't too many slow moments, especially here in L.A.," I explained. "But I really enjoy it. The people I work with a great and I'm learning a lot of stuff that's gonna help me later on."

"That's great, babe," Kevin smiled. "I'm really happy that you've found something you love, something that you'll be great at."

"I love it, I really do," I sighed looking at him. "I may not love doing some of the nasty scut work involved, but it's what I gotta do."

"So this August will begin your third year?" Kevin asked.

"Yup, I can't believe how fast all this has gone," I sighed. "Don't get me wrong, there were some times I thought a week would never end. Break's are few and far between in med school. As long as you stay on top of your studies, though, it'll be fine," I elaborated. "There was one guy my first year who got sick with Mono. He was out for four weeks straight, and he was never able to catch up."

"That must've sucked big time," Kevin said.

"Yeah, he was so upset when he had to drop out."

Kevin and I finished our dinner and he insisted on paying saying that since I'm a med student I need to save my money to help pay off those enormous loans. He did allow me to leave the tip though.

"So, what would you like to do now?" I asked as we walked back down the pier to the parking lot where his car was.

"Well, I kinda wanted to know if you'd like to go somewhere alone...say, like my place?" Kevin suggested.

"Why Kevin, I do believe you're trying to seduce me," I joked.

"Is it working?" He asked seriously, his voice strong with passion.

I didn't answer, just leaned in and briefly let my lips capture his. As I pulled back I could see the lust in his eyes, the burning desire to be with me again. And I knew he saw the same thing in my eyes.

Our pace quickened, we were definitely in a hurry to get to his car and then back to his place.

It was very dark. There was no light in the room, save for faint glow cast by the moon. Soft music could be heard playing. It was soothing and relaxing. There were no words; just beautiful melody and harmonies from the orchestral arrangements. There was a great weight on top of me. It wasn't too heavy, it was just right. It was a comfortable heaviness. My eyes adjusted to the lack of light and, slowly, my surroundings began to come into focus.

I was with him again. I was with Kevin. Part of me got scared when I awoke in the darkness. I thought it had all been a dream. That we hadn't found each other again. But then I felt him. I felt his breath on my neck; his body against mine. And at that moment, life felt right again. For the first time, everything felt right.

I felt Kevin stir. "Dustin?" His voice cried out softly.

"It's ok, babe. I'm here," I replied coursing my fingers through his black hair.

"I was afraid it was all a dream," His voice was quivering. His hold on me tightened.

"I had the same fear, too," I revealed. "But it wasn't a dream. We're here now...together. Again. And this time I'm never letting go," I whispered into his ear as I pulled him closer to me.

Gently, I let my lips capture his ear lobe and began to gently nibble on it. I started placing sweet, delicate kisses on his cheek and made my way down his neck.

"I love you so much," I cried, tears running down both of my cheeks.

Kevin pulled my face to his and crushed his beautiful lips against mine. His tongue snaked into my mouth while his hands ran up and down my back, squeezing my tight against his warm body.

Kevin finally broke our lips apart, releasing a small sigh. "I love you, Dustin. I always have, I always will."

I was so happy. Everything felt wonderful. Kevin and I were together again, and this time I wouldn't let anything break us apart. "You're still my boy," I heard him whisper. That was what he had said to me six years ago when I left.

"Always."

To Be Continued...

Well, I hope everyone enjoyed the fourth chapter of the sequel to Kevin and Dustin. Well, this time it only took me two months between updates. That's a big improvement for me!

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to my big bro! What would I do without you?
