You're Still My Boy -- Chapter 3
By: NM
"Wait, stop," I pushed David off of me.
"What's wrong?" He asked confused.
"I'm not gonna do this. I won't be the person to ruin your relationship with Marc. That's not the kind of person I am," I stated firmly.
"Dustin, wait...can't we at least talk about this?"
"No," I answered swiftly. "I gotta go," I said heading for the door.
"I'll talk to you later," I said as I left him alone and confused.
"Dustin, where is the chart on Mr. Robinson?" Dr. Snider asked.
"Oh, I've got it right here," I said handing it to her.
"Thanks, things are running kinda slow right now so if you wanna grab a bite to eat, go ahead," she said before moving to her next patient.
To me dinner sounded really good right now. I hadn't eaten since breakfast because we got slammed with a trauma right as I was about to go to lunch. It was now almost seven. I finished my last chart and went to the cafeteria for dinner.
In the middle of my meal, I got paged. "Oh great, I can't even finish dinner before getting called away," I grumbled to myself.
I took a few more quick bites of my food before gathering it all up and throwing it away. I hastily headed for the ER. When I came in, it was still relatively quiet.
"Cindy, what's up?" I asked as I approached the admit desk.
"Taylor wants you in Trauma 1," she replied.
"Dr. Taylor? What's he doing down here?" I asked.
"Some high profile patient was brought in. Requested you be in there, so..."
"So Dr. Taylor is gonna do anything to make our high profile patient happy...I see," I replied.
I darted off for the trauma room grabbing a gown and putting it on as collided with a body standing in front of the doors. `Wait a sec. High profile patient?' I said to myself. My heart started racing. Had David been in some kind of accident? My brain was racing at all the different possibilities he could be in as I got closer to the trauma room.
"What the hell is going on?" I asked looking at four familiar faces.
"There was an accident," Howie replied.
My heart skipped a beat as I stared at my four old friends. "Is he okay?"
"It's nothing major. We were goofing off and I jumped up on him. It caught him by surprise and we both fell to the ground," Nick explained what had happened.
"Does he know that I'm coming in?" I asked Alex hesitantly.
"When we found out we were coming here, he specifically requested you in hopes that you'd be working tonight," he explained.
"All right, I'll be back in a little while," I said.
A nurse came out of the trauma room. "Elizabeth, can you show these guys to the lounge?" I asked. "They're gonna need to be someplace they won't be disturbed for awhile."
"Right this way guys," she said leading the group off.
"I wanna stay," I heard his voice whisper out.
"Now isn't a good time," I replied looking past him into the trauma room.
"He's my cousin," He stated.
"I know. Best thing right now is to let us work. I promise I'll come to talk to you all about his condition when we're done," I said.
"All right," he reluctantly agreed.
I remained planted in the same spot as I looked through the trauma doors into the room. "Mr. Richards, wanna get in here?" Dr. Taylor yelled out from inside the room startling me.
I took a deep breath and pushed open the door. "What have we got?" I asked as I approached the gurney slapping a pair of latex gloves on.
"We've got everything taken care of," Dr. Taylor replied harshly.
"Then why was I paged?" I asked as I stared across at him.
"Do you honestly think we'd let a med student take care of a celebrity?" Dr. Taylor remarked.
"You were paged as a courtesy to our patient. He says he knows you," Dr. Taylor explained in his own rude, obnoxious way.
"Now, if you need anything Mr. Richardson, have him," he said pointing up at me, "come get me immediately. And as soon as the docs down here have you all cleared we'll get you moved to your own private room for the evening," Taylor finished before leaving the room with the other doctors and nurses in tail.
"Hey," Kevin said as he looked up at me from the gurney.
"Hey," I smiled back down at him. I grabbed a stool and rolled it over to the side of his gurney and sat down beside him. "What happened?"
"It was stupid, Nick and I were horsing around and I fell," Kevin explained. "It's stupid really. I said I didn't need to come, but our manager wanted to make sure nothing was wrong," He added.
"I understand," I smiled again. "So, how have you been?" I asked trying to make small talk.
"Dustin, I don't want you to be uncomfortable around me," Kevin requested.
"I'm not uncomfortable," I replied.
"Then could I at least get a hug from you?" Kevin asked. "Even though it's been six years, we're not strangers."
I leaned over and gave Kevin a gentle hug. I inhaled deeply, smelling him. Flashes of the past surged in my memory as I remained close to him. It was starting to get to be way too much for me, so I pulled away.
"It's good to see you," I smiled down at him.
I was trying my best to maintain a professional detachment, but I knew it would be hard with our history.
"It's good to see you, too, Dustin," Kevin grinned.
There was a brief silence before Kevin spoke again. "I've missed you," he said cautiously, not sure of what my reaction to his statement might be.
I wasn't taken back by his admission at all. I was actually kind of excited to hear him say that. I've missed him, too. I've missed him a lot. It made me feel good to know that he missed me too.
"So, what's your opinion on my leg?" Kevin asked.
"I don't think they have the X-Ray back yet. We won't be able to make a definitive diagnosis until we get the films," I explained.
"I see," Kevin replied.
Silence again filled the air. Rachel opened the door entering the room. "Dustin, trauma rolling up, Doug wants you," She said.
"I'll be right there," I replied. "Ok, looks like I have to get to work," I said turning back to Kevin. "I'm sure Dr. Taylor will be back later to check on you and go over your X-Ray personally," I explained.
He quickly grabbed my hand and held it. "Will you come back later?"
"I've got other patients..." I began. I couldn't finish my sentence when I looked down at him. My feelings for him were stirring inside me again with him so close to me. "I'll be back as soon as I can," I whispered. I squeezed his hand quickly before letting go and pulling on a pair of gloves and entering Trauma 2.
Unfortunately we lost the patient in Trauma 2. It was a young man with a gunshot wound to the head. He barely had a pulse and there was gray matter all over the backboard. I just finished helping Rachel wit the death kit before heading back to the lounge to speak with the other guys after stealing a peek at Kevin's X-Ray before handing it over to Dr. Taylor who was waiting for it.
"Hey guys," I said entering the lounge.
"Hey Dustin," Alex replied.
The guys were all sitting around the lounge talking with some of the other nurses and staff.
"Dustin, I didn't realize you knew such famous people," Dana grinned.
"Yeah, I've known them for a while now," I replied.
"Yeah, they were telling me some stories about a much younger you," She grinned mischievously.
"And I could tell you SEVERAL embarrassing stories about each of them, too," I bragged.
"That would be something I'd love to hear," Dana cheered. She looked down at her watch, "But it'll have to wait some other time, I gotta get back to my patients," she grabbed her coffee cup from the table before exiting the lounge.
"How is Kevin doing?" Brian asked seriously.
I sat down next to Nick. "He's gonna be just fine. There was no break," I said. "He probably just sprained it really bad and pulled a muscle," I added.
"Will he need any physical therapy?" Nick asked, still slightly worried.
"I doubt it. Probably just need to stay off it for bit. We'll probably give him some crutches to walk on to help keep the inflammation down," I explained.
"That is so good to hear," Brian breathed a sigh of relief.
"When can we see him?" Alex asked.
"Once we get him moved into a private room, I'm sure they'll let you see him," I explained.
"Thank you, Dustin. We all really appreciate everything you've done," Brian said squeezing my shoulder.
"No thanks required," I replied. "I didn't do that much. The docs had it handled."
"But you've been hear to explain everything to us, thank you," Brian exclaimed.
"That's my job," I stated.
"I'm gonna go get a drink, anybody want one?" Howie asked. "I'll go with you D," Nick replied.
"I gotta piss," Alex announced. "Dustin, where's the bathroom?"
"Take a left, go down the hall through the fire doors and it's on the right," I explained.
"Thanks," Alex said leaving behind the others leaving Brian and I alone in the lounge.
There was a brief silence before Brian stood and moved to sit next to me on the couch.
"Brian, what are you doing?" I asked cautiously.
"This," Brian whispered.
His arms wrapped around me and he buried his face into my neck. It was a hug. Nothing but a friendly hug. "Thank you so much for helping Kev," Brian repeated.
"You don't have to keep thanking me, I know you're grateful," I told him.
"Listen, do you think we could get together this evening?" Brian requested. "After you get off work?"
"This isn't a good time," I declined.
"Ok, well...maybe some other time then," Brian suggested.
"Some other time would be ok," I agreed.
"Great," Brian whispered in that sweet, southern voice of his.
The door opened abruptly, and I pulled away from Brian, bringing the distance back between us.
"Ah, Mr. Littrell, there you are," Dr. Taylor greeted him. "I have your cousins X-Rays back if you'd like to have a look at them," He said holding up an envelope.
"Mr. Richards, isn't there somewhere you should be? Sending some urine to the lab, or doing a rectal?" Dr. Taylor suggested harshly.
I stood from the couch, but Brian grabbed my arm and held me in place. "That's a bit uncalled for don't you think?" Brian stared Dr. Taylor in the eyes.
"Oh, he's just a med student, he's used to it by now," Taylor rebuffed.
"I don't care if he's used to your abusive and rude behavior or not. He's a human being and deserves respect. He's hear to learn and become a doctor, not to be your servant," Brian stated.
I was shocked, to say the least. But I think Doctor Taylor was even more shocked. I think that's the first time anyone has ever questioned him, let alone stand up to his rude behavior and do that.
"Now apologize," Brian said as he stepped closer to Doctor Taylor.
"Mr. Richards, I'm...tell Doctor Snider I said you could run the next trauma."
"I'll be at the admit desk if you need anything else Brian," I left the tense room and went to the admit desk.
"Nobody talk to Taylor for awhile," I warned.
"Why, what happened?" Doctor Brooks asked.
"The pop star bruised Taylor's ego," I boasted.
"It would've happened sooner or later," he dismissed it.
"Doctor Taylor said I could run the next trauma, is that okay with you?"
"Sure, this is a teaching hospital, after all," He smiled.
"Great," I said, returning to my charts.
"Interesting trauma, huh?" Doctor Brooks asked.
"I'll say, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that before," I replied.
"Aren't you off?" Doctor Brooks asked.
"Yeah, but I have a few charts to finish," I said grabbing them and preparing to review them.
"That can wait until tomorrow. Why don't you go on home and get some rest," He advised.
"Thank you Doctor Brooks," I smiled.
"See you tomorrow, Dustin," He said as he headed for the lounge.
I put the charts back up and headed for the elevator. Kevin had been moved a few hours ago to his own private room. Doctor Taylor actually came down and assisted with the transport. Talk about a kiss ass. Then once he was moved, Doctor Taylor and Doctor Brooks held a press conference with the other guys to update the press on Kev's condition.
I knocked on Kevin's door. "Come in," I heard him say.
I took a deep breath and walked into his room. "Hey Kev, how are you feeling?" I asked as I moved over to his bedside.
"Dustin, hey, I didn't know you were coming to visit," He spoke.
"I told you I'd come up later when I had a chance," I reminded him.
"I guess I figured you forgot or something. It got pretty busy down there before I was shipped up here," Kevin explained.
I wheeled over a stool and sat down beside his bed, my arms resting on the guard rail. "Any pain or anything?" I asked concerned.
"Just a little sore is all," He answered.
"Ok, that's good," Dustin nodded his head.
It was obvious that we didn't know what to talk about. What do you talk about after six years?
"How is med school?" Kevin asked trying to keep up a conversation.
"Just finished my second year and I'm doing an internship here this summer," I explained.
"That's awesome, Dustin," Kevin smiled. He let his hand reach for mine and gently squeeze it as he spoke.
As if on cue, we both looked down together at our entwined hands. It had been so long since we'd done this, but it felt so familiar and right. Kevin slowly looked up and I could see his feelings for me rushing back. And I'm sure he saw the same thing in me. Fearing someone may walk in, I withdrew my hand from his.
"Dustin, come here," Kevin whispered.
"Kevin, I can't, not here," I replied. "If someone were to walk in..." I let it end there; he knew what I was implying.
"I don't care about the risks. I just want to hold you in my arms." Figures. Even now, Kevin still has that stubborn streak of his.
"Not just the risks to you, but the ones for me as well," I added. "Doctors and patients...they can't become involved," I stated.
"But we know each other from before," Kevin reminded me.
"But they don't know that, and furthermore, no one here knows that I'm gay," I explained.
"If someone were to walk in and see us, it could go very badly...for both of us. You know that," I explained.
"I wouldn't let that happen," Kevin argued.
"No, Kevin, not here," I said sternly.
"Alex told me where you guys are staying. And you'll probably be released tomorrow. I'll come over and we'll talk then, in private," I said.
A bit angry that he wasn't getting his way right now, he finally looked at it rationally and agreed. "You're right. It's too big a risk for you. I don't wanna jeopardize your career," Kevin said.
"Thank you for understanding," I smiled at him like I used to several years ago when we were together.
"I haven't seen you smile like that in years," Kevin reminisced. Of course, his comment made me turn slightly red.
I turned around and looked out the window of the room into the hallway. There was no one around. I went over and closed the blinds before returning to Kevin's bedside. He scooted over to the side as I sat down beside him. I let myself sink into Kevin's arms and felt him wrap them tightly around me. Slowly, he started to rock us back and forth.
"What if someone sees?" Kevin asked.
"To hell with it. I've missed you so much," I choked out.
"I've missed you too, babe," Kevin whispered into my ear.
I turned around in Kevin's arms and tilted my head to meet his. Before anything else could happen, an annoying beeping sound emanated from between us. Kevin let out a deep sigh as I untangled myself from him and got up from the bed. I grabbed my pager from my lab coat pocket and checked it.
"I gotta get downstairs, sorry," I apologized as I placed my pager back and straightened my tie and shirt.
"No need to be sorry," Kevin forgave me with his token smile.
"I'll let you get some rest, and we'll talk more tomorrow, ok?" I said.
"Sure. Good night," Kevin said as I opened the door.
"Good night," I said back as I walked out, shutting his door and heading back to the ER.
God, sometimes pagers were the most annoying piece of technology that we ever created. Turns out it was just Doctor Taylor wanting to speak with me. Apparently, now that Brian and the others had left the hospital for the evening, he was back to being his normal self. The first thing he lectured me on was not to try and have my `celebrity' friends defend me for my carelessness and own stupidity, as he put it.
I wasn't really paying close attention to what he said. I heard everything he said, but I wasn't listening. I was still thinking back a few minutes ago and the events that had transpired in Kevin's hospital room.
Eventually though he got tired of chastising me, and decided to call it a night. But not before a few harsh words and a promise to make the rest of my med school career difficult if I didn't shape up.
`What the hell did I do to him?' My mind screamed. Clearly, he wasn't exercising the part of his brain that controlled reasoning.
I went back up to Kevin's room, but noticed he was asleep. I didn't have the heart to wake him, so I left quietly and headed home.
The next day at the hospital started out just as bad as last night ended. I woke up late, so I didn't have time to take a shower. I was almost knocked down by a rude pedestrian who made me spill my coffee everywhere. Then as soon as I got in the doors of the ER, it was chaos. Doctor Brooks was in with a bad stab wound, and Doctor Snider was in a meeting. Then as I was getting ready to see my first patient a young woman comes up to the desk asking for help. As I told her to talk with admit, she threw up all over me.
"What the hell happened to you?" Alex asked as he walked up to the admit desk.
"Don't ask," I warned him.
He followed me into the lounge where I quickly removed my shirt and tie, tossing them in the hazardous waste bin.
"So, I take it your not having a good day at work?" Alex asked as he sat down on the couch in the lounge.
"Yesterday ended badly and now its carried into today," I complained as I put a scrub top on and attached my badge on it.
"I've had those days," Alex agreed.
"I just hope this isn't an indication of what the rest of the day has in store," I groaned as I shut my locker.
"I was about to grab some breakfast, wanna join me?" Alex offered as he followed me out of the lounge.
"Sorry, I've gotta get to work," I said heading back to the admit desk.
"Oh, they're discharging Kev today...just in case you wanna know," Alex winked at me before heading to the cafeteria.
"Thanks," I nodded. Alex said goodbye and began to leave. When he was at the door I spoke up. "Maybe I'll stop by your hotel after my shift," I said.
"He'd like that," Alex smiled as he left the lounge.
"I'd like it, too," I said to myself as I shut my locker door and wrapped my stethoscope around my neck.
I was standing outside the door. I'd tried knocking several times, but just as I was about too I'd back down.
`What do I say?' I asked myself.
`What does anyone say in a situation like this?' I asked myself.
I heard a door open and my head shot up. The door before me was still shut. I turned my head and saw him. "What are you doing here?" He asked surprised.
"I came to see you, Kev," I said.
Kevin wrapped his arms around my body, yanking me towards him.
"I've missed you so much," Kevin whispered.
"Me too. I thought I could do this, but I can't," I cried.
Kevin's head rested against mine. "Come on, let's go inside and talk," Kevin reached into his pocket and removed his room key and opened the door.
We didn't separate. Our bodies remained in close proximity of one another. We walked over to his bed together and sat down.
"Kev, I was wrong," I cried. "I never should have left like that."
"Shhh," e tried to calm me. He just continued to hold me.
"I thought I was doing the right thing. I thought it would be best," I tried to explain to him.
"Dustin, don't worry about it. It's ok," Kevin's voice was still so soothing to me.
"It can't be ok. I left you. We said we'd be together forever and I left," I broke apart from his hold and stood. "I gave up. I left you."
"But that doesn't matter anymore. It's all the past. What matters now is now," Kevin stressed the now. "We're here, together again. And I can only think that this is because we've been given another chance. My life was better when I was with you," Kevin opened his heart to me again. But would I take it, or leave him again?
"I was happy with you, too," I admitted.
"Then I think this is fate telling us to do it again, and this time get it right," Kevin smiled.
I just stood there. His reached his hand out to me. "Come here, Dustin."
I placed my hand in his, our fingers locking together intimately. Kevin drew me close, wrapping his other arm around my waist. My other arm was around his back, crushing his body against mine. Tears poured out of my eyes, my head buried in his neck. Kevin's was slowly running his fingers through my hair. "I'm sorry, Kev. Please forgive me," I cried.
"Shhh, it's ok babe, it's ok," Kevin whispered into my ear. I felt his lips place a gentle kiss on my cheek, and then another a little lower. I pulled my head out of his neck and looked into his eyes.
At that moment, everything came rushing back to me. The first time I saw him, our first kiss, the first time we made love. Everything. And I knew at that moment, nothing else mattered except that I wanted those feelings again. I wanted to be with Kevin again. I never wanted to be apart from him ever, for the rest of my life. My fingers were coursing through his soft hair. His hand moved to wipe away the tears that continued to fall down my cheeks. His strong hand cupped my face, pulling me closer to him. My eyes shut as I grew closer. Then, our lips pressed against each other gently. I shivered when his lips touched mine. It'd had been six years since we'd kissed. I'd forgotten how wonderful it felt to be this close with him.
I pulled back slightly. "Kev?"
"Yes, Dustin?" was his hoarse reply.
"I love you," I whispered.
"I love you," Kevin replied. "You're still my boy," Kevin reminded me.
"Always," I answered as I leaned in to kiss him again.
To Be Continued...
Well, I hope everyone enjoyed the third chapter of the sequel to Kevin and Dustin. Wow, I was never intending for it to take SO long to update my story again. I really need to get on the ball more. I can make excuses and say school was hard, I was studying a lot, etc. etc. And those are all true. School did keep me busy and I am still studying a lot! But it's no real excuse for not updating in so long. I'm really gonna try hard and get on the ball more when it comes to being more consistent with my updates. I know it sounds like a huge stretch coming from me, but what can I say? I'll think of it as my New Year's Resolution of sorts.
I just wanted to give a quick shout out to my big bro! What would I do without you?
