Keith's Choir College Experience Chapter 6 By Tenor LK

The rest of the "impromptu" vacation that I planned went extremely well...until my parents got home.

I should first start off with the fact that my parents are cool with my sexuality....they understand that I did not choose to be the way I was (if you don't believe me, you should see the stack of discipline forms they have from my high school years, fighting kids for their homophobic slurs...moral of the story is to not mess with a buff fag!) but they are all about class and status...which Steve, was not.

Now at this point, I knew nothing about Steve's family, because it just didn't matter that much to me. I wouldn't have cared if he lived in a cardboard box in the ghetto of Philadelphia (which of course he didn't) but he was my choice. And I was hell-bent on keeping him...no matter what.

My parents arrived home on our last day at the house...Steve and I was watching `Trick' in the entertainment room when my mom came running in the room.

"Keith, we did get to catch you!"

"Mom, how are you...it's great to see you!" I bounced up to hug her...and as I do with all of the ladies who hug me, I pick her up off the ground...and of course, she was shocked.

"Keith...you put me down now!" she yelled in mock anger. Once she returned to the floor, she noticed Steve, who was now standing by my side. "Steve I believe?"

"Yes, Ma'am, it's nice to meet you." His manners made me almost cream my pants.

`Keith, you did pick a good one here, tall, dark, handsome...not to mention polite...Steve, the only manners we use here are please and thank you...please feel free to use my first name, Maria."

"No problem"

Mom and Steve returned to the couch, while I went to see dad.

"Steve," Maria began, "I Just want you to know, even if you hadn't, that my son and I share no secrets. I'm proud of him, and his honesty with me and his father. And I want you to know that if you ever need anything...just give me or Keith Sr. a ring...we'll always help anyone who Keith deems a friend"

"That means so much to me Ma'am...er...Maria. My Mom and you would get along together nicely...she feels the same way."

"And what about your father?"

"Well, he hasn't been around for several years; he left my mom when I was in High School."

"I'm so sorry to hear about that Steven, it's not fair sometimes what parents do unconsciously to their children."

"Actually, this is my fault...I broke them up...I told them I about me when I was 16...and Dad wanted me out of his house...well. My mother wouldn't hear of it and told me to pack my bags...we weren't going to live with a man who couldn't accept his son. I was so proud of her for that...but I wish that she would have tried to help me to get him to realize that I didn't choose to be this way...this is who I am, no more...no less...and most importantly, no regrets."

"Hmm...I see...you are wise beyond your years Steve..."

"Thank you ma'am...ah...sorry...Maria"

They both laughed at this. Meanwhile, in the Kitchen...

"Dad!"

"Junior!"

"How are you Dad...it's great to see ya"

"Same here son, sit down...I'm starting Dinner...Is Steve still here?"

"Yeah, Mom sat him down to talk"

"Are you sure that's a good thing?"

"Not really...but Steve's a good guy...he'll charm her in no time"

Keith Sr. Chuckled. "I'm sure of it. You never told us what his parents do for a living."

"Oh. Well, I never thought to ask him...it's not something that came up."

"Well...you should...I don't want him after you because of who you are, and where you come from."

"Dad! Steve isn't like that...he wouldn't...besides...I tracked him down."

"Well, I'm just concerned that you get into a relationship with a person who can bring something to the table...you know I'm not extremely happy with your career choice...what is teaching going to bring you that my firm can't?"

Here we go...it's the classic fight we have every time we talk about my education, and what I plan to do with the rest of my life. My Dad is a lawyer, who started his own firm (With his Father) and wants it to stay in the family. While that is all great and cool...I'm one of two kids...with my younger sister working her way though private school, I felt he could pine on her...rather then me.

"Teaching will bring me a life that is happy and fulfilled, while being a lawyer will deny me the right to do what I truly want."

"Ah, fine...but I'm not done working on this with you Junior."

"Yes, Senior." I responded with the name I call my dad when he's being an Ass.

"Keith...Help! Your boyfriend knows more about Monet then I do!" I heard my mom yell from upstairs.

"Sounds like your Mom has met her match in Art History," Dad said chuckling.

"Yeah, I should have warned her that Keith wanted to do Art History at one point in his life." We met up with Steve and my Mother in the Entertainment room. They were looking at my Mom's old Art History book which sits on the coffee table in that room...Steve had looked through it several times during the week, and now he has found the perfect person to talk to about it all...I seriously didn't get it...Art History? HOW BORING!!!

"Steven is the most brilliant Artist I have met...He's going to help do a portrait of the family that I had been planning for a while now." Mom said, beaming at Dad.

"That's great dear...I knew you would find someone to assist you!" Dad said approvingly.

"Well, we are going to leave you now, I have to start unpacking while your father had better get dinner started right away...I'm Starved!" Mom said, turning on her heel and walking out of the room...pulling Dad by the collar of his shirt, "Who said I wanted to go?" he said as they left...I could hear them kiss in the hallway after he made his statement.

"Wow, your mom is awesome...she knows mo much about the French Impressionists!" Steve said, pushing me onto the couch.

"Yeah well, that's Mom. She has always been interested in art. And living with Dad has given her time to do the perusing she wanted to do, while being an assistant manager for the Met Art Gallery."

"Awesome!" He responded. He was sitting on my lap at this point, extremely close to my face...and I stared into his eyes, and he invited me to kiss him...so I did, for a while...until...

"Keith, Steven, Maria...Dinner...Let's Go!" Dad yelled.

Dinner was quiet at first, we were enjoying dad's excellent culinary skills...his Steaks were excellent...anything he cooks on the grill is excellent really...

"Steve, what do your parents do?" Dad asked. I knew I should have interrupted here...but I just didn't think things would go this bad...

Well, as I told Maria, My mother is a nurse...in her spare time she id taking classes to become a Doctor. She will be finished this coming December. My father left us when a few years ago because of my sexuality.

"Hmmm. And you and your mom...going to school at the same time...how can you afford that?"

"Dad...please stop...he answered your question...don't do this" I pleaded...already seeing how the conversation was going to end

He ignored me, and asked the same question to Steve...and he answered.

"Well, my mother and I live with her parents. My mom had me young, at 16, so she never got a chance to go to school. Her parents took us in when she and dad split, and it gives her a chance to go to school like she wanted to, because I'm old enough to go on without her...for several moments at a time."

"Really." I could see Senior's eyes start to twitch...I knew he was going to go for the gold.

"Well, my Son and I have talked this afternoon...and I told him a few things I'm going to tell you." When he said this, my mother piped up.

"Keith, is this really necessary right now?"

"Yes `Ria...he needs to know, so I know where he stands. Steven, my son is extremely rich...although he may not care about it, I do. I have worked hard to provide him with a future that he can count on...and I don't want him to have to depend upon another person...nor do I want him with a person who can not take care of himself...If you get my drift."

"Yes, I do sir. It upsets me to hear you say those words...I love Keith for himself...and not what he is going to have years to come..."

"While it's great to hear you say that...time will tell...won't it?"

"Dad, What are you doing...stop! He just told you he loves me...and that he doesn't care about the damn money...so just stop!" I ran out of the room at this to my room. I'll be Damned if he was going to toss his money in my face for the rest of my life. I was packing our stuff when my mother walked into the room.

"Keith...don't leave like this...your father is only trying to protect you..."

"Mom...Steve literally ran away from me when I tried to tell him I was gay...I'm not going to let Dad scare him away with his little `good faith' money talk."

"Keith, I will never hold you back from your decision...but call me once you get back to campus? You know I'll worry until you do."

"Yes, Mom" She kissed me on top of my head when I noticed Steve walk in.

"Steve...I'm sorry you had to go through Keith Sr.'s little diatribe...it doesn't matter to me...at all. I'm proud to see what you and your mom have accomplished for yourselves...a new life."

"Thanks, I just wish Mr. A could see that."

Have a great trip dear and she kissed him on top of his forehead too.

With the bags packed, we started downstairs to the car. As we loaded it, Dad came out.

"Junior!"

Yes, Senior?"

"You know I'm trying to protect you...I know you are a man...but you are still my son."

"Yes dad, but you can't do this to every guy I bring home...it's not fair to them...and I will not stand for it anymore...you have taught me well...trust in your training Dad...I'm a good one." We laughed at this, and he embraced me.

"I know...call when you get in?"

"Yes sir."

"Good. Steve...Take care of my son?"

"I will sir." And they shook hands.

We were in the car...and off down I-195...Towards school once more.
