The minute I got off the bus, I saw her in the distance. It was getting a little dark, but there was no mistaking that was my Katherine. She looked up in my direction. Then she smiled as she ran towards me. Giving me the biggest hug of my life she said:
"God I've missed you. Don't ever leave me again."
"How did you know I was here already? The bus was half an hour early." I said to her as we looked at each other grinning.
As we made our way towards the campus Katherine told me how she had no idea when I was coming back but that she had just ran out to get me a welcome home surprise. She then presented me with a bottle of Glenfiddich Whiskey.
"This is a pre-present. The rest is in your room," she said with this twinkle in her eye.
I was the only one on the floor that had a small TV in my room, so I gave Katherine the key while I was away so she could watch TV in privacy.
Now, I was intrigued. All kinds of things started running around in my mind. I just couldn't get a handle on what she could have done. As much as I hate surprises, this is one I really wanted because it was from her.
Making our way up to the second floor of our residence she stopped abruptly in front of my door and said, "Okay, close your eyes."
I looked at her and said "Woman are you crazy?"
"Indulge me."
Knowing there wasn't much I could refuse her; I closed me eyes as she opened my door. Katherine led me by the hand to a chair.
Okay, now you have to understand the rooms are very small. And contrary to what Ikea might say, my room has no place to have a seating area.
"Open your eyes Cass!" She said excitedly.
Opening my eyes slowly my mouth soon followed. She had transformed my room into a small homey restaurant! She managed to talk the campus pub into borrowing two chairs and a table. She even managed to swing full table linens and cutlery.
"Wow!" was all that came out of my mouth.
As I looked around more, I noticed she didn't leave any details out. There was a small bunch of flowers as a centre to the table. Candles, napkins, and wine goblets. It was perfect!
"I love it, it's perfect...there's just one thing."
She looked at me as she made her way to the CD player to put some music on.
"What are you talking about?" Katherine said, her lips turning up into the most delicious smile.
"Where's the food?"
She laughed in that hearty, joyous laugh. I adore that laugh. It was full of life, promise, and joie de vivre. I joined her in laughter. Then she spoke in a friendly yet seductive manner and said, "All in good time."
