Adam
Chapter 96

Mercedes was in a good mood then changed tact, and looked at Mary.
"Tell everyone about Shirley Jean." She burst out laughing.
Mary looked at her and she did something I never thought she would do. She burst out laughing with her.
"I had forgotten about her."
"Well tell us." Kasey smiled.
"Oh no I couldn't, that girl was such a headache."
"She was a street walker, a well-dressed one, but a street walker none the less," Mercedes said.
"Shush, no more." Mary sat down.
"You are going to love this. Shirley Jean had dreams of grandeur, she only shopped at the best stores and she dined mostly in the cafeteria. A few of us were onto her straight away, she was actively working while she sipped her tea. There weren't only women that dined there, some very nice chaps also used the place. She was making sure they were all looked after, hence her elegant style and what seemed to be her high wages. Adele loved her look but didn't know her background. They chatted when she came in and were quite friendly. She made one mistake and introduced Shirley to a friend of hers, a mining magnate from out west. Shirley was all over him like a rash. All the while this was happening the poor soles that especially came to meet Shirley were left out in the cold. They weren't happy but there was nothing they could do about it."
"And what happened, as if I can't guess?" I asked.
"He married her, and I believe they are very happy. She only appeared once more in the cafeteria and that was to thank Adele for the introduction and to pass on the invitation to her wedding. She nearly fainted when we told her what Shirley did for a living. She had no idea she was a working girl." They both laughed their heads off.
"Boy did we get an earful off her that day." Mary said.
"We certainly did, they have five children, and Shirley is dripping in diamonds and is a very respectable woman I believe."
"Names?" Kasey said.
"Shirley Jean was the name we gave her, and sorry Kasey, you won't get their real names from us." She zipped her lips.
"Now Mal and I must go, I will ring your lawyer tomorrow Kasey and await my instructions." Mary got up from the table and hugged all of us.
"Mercedes it's been fun we must catch up again soon."
"For sure Mary a game of cards one day, call the girls then let me know what day."
"That will be very special, they always love your odd stories."
"And not yours?" I lifted my eyebrows.
"My friends wouldn't understand Adam, it was a different time. Kasey do not forget the boys that were persecuted."
When they left we sat for another hour or so and chatted. Mercedes had gone quiet and I asked her why.
"The boys she was talking about, were the storeroom staff, store display boys, and salesmen. There were some awful well heeled men going into the store and making demands on the boys who worked there. If they complained about the unwarranted advances management never backed them up. They blamed them, then sacked them. The police sometimes got involved, a different time but a terrible situation if you were young and handsome. You should check out the history of Hope Street House. Fred and Adele created it so the boys had somewhere to go where they could feel safe. A house where they could go to avoid ridicule and public shaming. I think it is still standing, and there should be some records around somewhere. The reason why Mary is insisting they are mentioned is because of Johnny and Jimmy. They adored her and she loved them. And I suspect Mary and Mal have a gay grandchild they want to protect."
"Now you have gone in another direction Mercedes. I will get the boys onto it, for most of them this is their history also. Looks like we have to hire more staff Adam." I put my hand up and said.
"I vote yes."
"So do I, and Sam." Kasey raised his arm. I heard Sam groan, he never gets to vote on his own. He and Billy had their Harry Potter books out and were reading on the sun lounge, I thanked God they wouldn't have to experience that kind of abuse. A wonderful day full of fun people was had by all of us, I told Mercedes and Kasey what Mary had said about the cars, and they agreed that they thought it may have been the case. We cleared up and I was bushed when they all left, so I went to run a bath. Kasey made sure Sam was still having his sleepover and he put mum in charge, then he headed my way. By the time he got there, I was stepping into the hot water, his clothes flew everywhere and he was in that tub within seconds.
"It was a great day Adam, I thoroughly enjoyed myself."
"Do you think you can do something with the other story?"
"Yes, I will mention it in Mary's story but I am thinking a separate, one-off, documentary of the boys. Everything we do won't always be attached to the Adele Banks story we can do others and it sounds very interesting."
"It does, now we have to find Hope House, and the books and paperwork."
"Maybe in the attic amongst the boxes of miscellaneous paperwork, but I would start by finding Hope Street."
"Of course, I will look up the location tomorrow."
"Then we do the attic again."
"I don't remember seeing any, but I was only looking for the relevant Banks paperwork."
"We will go through it and in the meantime I can get Georgio to investigate its whereabouts. Mercedes said it still existed."
"Then I will ring her." He leaned in and we kissed, he then turned around and I held him. He was almost asleep when the water started getting cool, so I got him out and dried him off and we went to bed.
I was up early because I could hear Sam in his room, he had come back to grab another book, the first one had been read cover to cover. I hugged him then I went to shower, after that, I looked at the suitcase Mary's daughter had dropped off, and decided Mick and his team were so busy. I would read them through first. I hauled the bag downstairs and placed it on the dining room table then I sorted them out into years. There were thirty journals and I took the first one out the back. Mum was there already, she said she had a great time yesterday. I made coffee and told her I was going to start reading the books. She wanted to read them and tld me there was a better way. I listened and agreed with her. Because they were all handwritten it would benefit the reader to get them typed up, so she will get her girls to do that in their spare time. That will stop me from hauling the case around.
"It should be simple her handwriting is easy to read."
"I wasn't looking forward to the slow read."
"My girls will fix that, they can put it on a memory stick and you can read it on your phone, give me a couple of days to tell them. I will be working downstairs today, I have to get the new offices ready."
"Thank you, what are the boys up to?"
"Reading, I let them stay up an extra half hour last night because they wanted to finish the first book."
To my surprise some visitors came around the corner of the house, Joey, Trish and Ethan. Mum started breakfast while Ethan sat quietly, I guess he's a bit shy.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Yes Adam, like a log. It's so quiet over there."
"Good, and I hope you bought up big yesterday."
"I looked through the shop and did buy a few things."
"We will be going back at some stage to buy you what you really wanted. Won't we sunshine?" He slumped in his chair.
"Toast bacon and eggs Ethan?' Mum got up.
"I can do it.'
"But I'm already up. If you want to help make yourself a coffee."
Keep it real mum, and I know what he's going through. It's hard to accept you have nothing and harder when friends lend a hand. Adele did the same to me, and looking back I will always be grateful.
"Did you work out who the socialite was Adam?" Trish grinned.
"Yes, who else but my least favourite customer." We both laughed.
Kasey came out in his jeans and tank top, which is unusual for him on a working day. He said his good morning's, then kissed me, Ethan said.
"Forget it Kasey, as I said before, you're a shit kisser." The laughing started about then.
"So why are you casual today?'
"I'm going to the garage to check the cars out. They may have them running."
"I want to come." I moaned, or should I say whined.
"You can come, I will pick you up."
"We can have lunch Northside."
"Deal. He smiled.
"Ethan while we are there do you want me to go through Cody's shop?"
"That would be awesome Adam, get them to put aside a few things and I will call in to get them."
"Done," I will get more than a few things, he won't like it but it is what it is.
After breakfast, I had Kasey in a trance again. I had dressed down today, black hipster jeans tank top and a black leather jacket that was full of holes intentionally. I looked homeless in my street style if it wasn't for my silver belt buckle he would have given me a fifty-dollar bill
"I love it."
"Not to wise guy?"
"Perfect, but don't show Ethan, this one is just for me." He started sucking on my nipple which was on show when the jacket was pulled aside.
We did our thing and had a new member today, he enjoyed the walk and Kasey whispered to me.
"He's not in your league Adam, no matter what he wears he will never match your style."
"That is why I haven't asked Marko to give him a new look." I laughed.
"He still won't match you." I felt special like Aunty Mary does. When we arrived at work the three of us leaned on the door and took in the aroma of the salon. I sighed and then went to fill the bun basket, after that I sent Jimmy a message.
'Hope Street?'
When Kasey and I went over to Northside I received his answer.
'Talk to Walsham,'
I thanked him and told Kasey as we entered the classic car garage. Our cars were sitting to one side and the mechanic told us they were good to go. He didn't have to do anything much they had been stored professionally. New oil and a bit of grease fixed them. The next problem was how to get them back home. Kasey paid extra to have them transported to the house tomorrow. So that solved the problem. We sat outside my favourite takeaway and had my other favourite food, Lasagna. Nat's was awesome but this place was better.
"So we had better make an appointment to go and see Walsham then."
"Or I can go on my own. It's up to you."
"Adam, do you sometimes feel we have always been on a treasure hunt?"
"Yes, it feels like Jimmy is dealing out treasures bit by bit as we find it. Maybe Mercedes was worded up to say something about the house. Jimmy knows we are busy so he's trickling unfinished business to us through his friends. But Kasey, yes I feel like I'm playing a game of find the treasure."
"Me too, this food is awesome." He grinned.
"I ordered four trays we can give one to Ethan, saves him cooking."
"Good idea and the clothes?"
"We do that now, finish up and I will grab the food."
We walked back to the car and stored the food then into the salon. It was busy, it's always busy. The music was turned down and the hip's stopped swaying so I yelled out.
"Don't stop for us boys, carry on." I laughed and watched Kasey's hips move to the beat as we went into Cody's warehouse shop.
I started with jeans and ended up standing in front of the belts. It took me ages to select the right ones and Kasey kept piling stuff on the counter.
"Why so much?"
"This is an apology gift Adam. I did upset him at Trisha's wedding, so I want to buy him stuff too." I get it, he's still feeling a bit guilty.
Six pairs of jeans, eight T-shirts, five tank tops, three jackets and dozen pairs of underpants. Three belts and a dozen or so necklaces and wristbands. I looked at the suits but I think ours will last another wedding. I also got some things for myself, but I have to go into the vintage clothes shop for my bigger wow factors. Kasey on the other hand purchased a body-shaping tank top or two, he insisted he try them on and I'm sure all eyes were on him. I talked to the manager about Pete's mum starting and he said he told her when she's ready just to come in. We were lucky to have been handed the keys to Joey's place so that was our next stop. We packed the bags in Ethan's sparse bedroom and the food in the fridge, and then we went home and did the same. Back at work I rang Walsham and made an appointment, I will take a family pizza along, he likes them. I sent Kasey a message and he answered with a love heart. I also had a thought, but I will ask him later on. I know he passed the name of an accountant onto Mary and I wondered why he didn't do it himself, he does all our investments. I got my answer on our balcony that night, just after I talked to a very angry, very grateful Ethan.
"So you liked the food?"
"What? It's not about the food I'm furious about, it's the clothes. It's too much Adam."
"Next time when Trish or I say 'go shopping' you go shopping, and you won't have to put up with screaming at me."
"I am sorry, but I am not used to this sort of thing."
"Was that a thank you?"
"Thank you Adam. You are one of the kind, and a dear friend."
"Good, I will see you tomorrow and I expect to see you in a great outfit."
"I try but I will never match your look."
"Good." I hung up feeling pleased with myself. Back to Kasey and he reminded me he has a full team of accountants and lawyers on his books. I had forgotten my customer Judy and her law firm.
"How do we play it tomorrow?"
"We ask him out right Adam, Hope Street, and its history."
"We don't need to be subtle?"
"No, I don't think so, why. Are you worried?"
"Not particularly, but sometimes these treasure hunts tend to shock us, so I am trying to minimise it."
"It will be fine baby, we ask he tells, and we go from there. I must warn you though it will be a long way off."
"I understand, I want the boys to finish the movie first."
"Which reminds me, you have to talk to Mick about it, can you make an appointment?"
"Done."
We closed up and I heard a moan, Sam was having a nightmare so we crawled in with him. He was dreaming of the three-headed dog monster and was trying to out run it. I know this because I heard him telling Billy at breakfast, it had scared them both. When we got to work I set up an appointment with Mick and pre-ordered two family pizzas to be picked up on our way to Walsham's. I then messaged him to tell him we were bringing lunch. Trish was happy with her meal last night, then she spent time with Ethan picking out his clothes for today. He did look good but he wasn't quite there yet. I had a small list of things he could change but I resisted telling him.
"His look is different Trish, he needs to tone that hair down a bit."
"He loves it the way it is, and anyway when did you start being a critic? He has his style and he loves the way he looks. Of course, you have a better look but he thinks he is just as nice."
"I will shut up then, just popping into the retro shop for a minute."
"Kasey will kill you if you buy more clothes Adam."
"Then I will forgive him with a nice long slow fashion show." I grinned.
"Please do." She giggled.
I went to look if they had any new stock and after picking out a few items, like another purple silk shirt I stopped and thought about it. I'm just doing this to top Ethan's look again so I stopped at two shirts.
Kasey is right my wardrobe clean out wasn't enough, my shoes alone would put Imelda Marcos to shame. I did three clients before Kasey tapped me on the shoulder. I said my goodbyes to Trish while Kasey complimented Ethan. He was getting quite a few today and Gloria kept winking at me, he was that excited. I think they are all going to the club Saturday night to find him a husband. I am going to talk to Mike maybe he will have a good idea or a single gay boy on his team. We picked the pizzas up and walked into the bank building, a place that is on Fred's list, his father had built it. Walsham greeted us with his secretary who dived on the food as soon as the boxes were opened. He sat back with a big piece in his hand and smiled. Kasey did the same.
"This is a treat, thank you boys."
"You're welcome, we thought we may have needed a sweetener."
"The Hope Street house, nothing to see there. Fred and Adele started it. It was used by men and boys who had been thrown out of home, or lost their jobs because of their sexual identities. They had a house nanny there all the time so it was run straight. When the boys found new jobs they were moved to newer accommodation. In those days it was mainly boarding houses. The ones that showed promise were found jobs, some went back to school. Some achieved great things, but sadly some ended up working on the streets. She tried to help as many as possible but when Johnny then Fred passed it all collapsed. Jimmy tried to revive it, but he was in no state to do anything much, and he had already decided to become a recluse."
"So nothing survived the house"
"No, I believe all the records were destroyed because of persecution, no names were recorded either. To the outside world it was just a halfway home for young country men trying their luck in the big city."
"I see, so it's not operating?" Kasey grabbed another piece of the delicious food.
"No, it's been gone for years now but they helped a few dozen boys. Things are different now, help is everywhere."
"What aren't you telling us?" I knew he was holding back.
"Nothing Adam, it is what it was, and it closed down."
"It's empty and has been empty for some years now, does Jimmy own it?"
"I don't think so."
"He does, I checked." Kasey surprised him.
"He might, but you will have to take that up with him. All I know is, it was locked up after Freds passing. I thought it had been sold."
"Okay then we ask Jimmy." I said. He wasn't going to talk to us and it looks like another treasure hunt is in the making. I will go through Jimmy's keys and see if I can find the right one. On the way back to work I asked Kasey to take me there tonight. I told him my plan to try all the keys, he said we might be caught breaking into the place but I reassured him I was the finest cat burglar in town. More pizzas were picked up on the way back and my staff were very happy, even though some had eaten, they ate again. I was tinkering with my phone and did a search on mining magnates that married in the seventies, but it came up with nothing. Maybe Mary's books will reveal the right name, but I didn't think I would be that lucky.
At around seven, after dinner Kasey and I made some excuse to go out and we headed for Hope Street. It was in an outer suburb surrounded by trees and the streets were lined with older houses. We pulled up at the address Kasey had and I looked at the small weatherboard late nineteen forties home. The gardens were non-existent and there was a familiar air about it. We locked the car and walked through the gate and on up to the front door. I had the keys in hand and put aside the ones that I knew were for Jimmy's apartment and Adele's museum. That left me with three unknowns which I tried and none of them worked.
"Let me try." Kasey pulled out a small tool set and fiddled with the lock.
"Kasey we can't just break in."
"It's okay Adam, there's no one about." I thought I saw a flicker of light coming through the heavily blocked-out window. I know this place, I looked at Kasey and said.
"It's a safe house, I was taken here when Lloyd was being hunted."
"You were here?"
"I didn't know where I was, but yes this is the house." The lock clicked and he smiled at me.
"Let's take a look anyway." The door swung open and all of a sudden I was blinded by a bright light in my face.
"Get down on the floor, now, hands behind your backs!" Someone shouted. Kasey pulled me down and I hit the floor hard. When I looked up I saw two military officers with guns at the ready.
"Why are you here!" They shouted.
"We are looking at the history of this house, we didn't realise it was a safe house," Kasey answered.
"Well well well, if it isn't the famous Lieutenant Casey and his namby pamby fairy friend." Someone sneered. I knew that voice and my heart nearly stopped. My breathing became erratic and a panic attack loomed.
"Lieutenant Kasey?" One of the soldiers said.
"Yes Major, ex-military." Kasey said.
"You can't be here. Saunders call the squad leader and Lloyd get back in your room."
"No, I want to talk to my old friends."
"Room, now, and that's an order." He was pushed towards the room I had once occupied and it was bolted behind him.
"What the fuck is he doing here?" Kasey yelled.
"I am not at liberty to say."
"General we have been compromised, we will await your orders." The other guy was on the phone.
"What the fuck is happening here, he's supposed to be in the military's nut house?"
I started shivering and Kasey stood me up, he was shouting at the men and I could hear Loyd screaming.
"Go ahead shoot us, if you aren't then I'm going to help my friend. Why is that nut case even here?"
"Lieutenant Casey, stand down." I heard someone roar behind me. I turned and came face to face with dad. The banging on the bedroom door started again.
"Let me out, let me fuck that fairy into oblivion. If you can hear me you toady I am coming for you, and this time I will make sure you stay down for good." I looked at dad and ran outside, there was military everywhere and I threw up on the non-existent front lawn.
"I have to help Adam." Kasey pushed past dad he grabbed me and held me while I spewed all over the place. Only God knows how fast the memories flooded back, and my side ached where I had been shot. Every bone in my body urged me to run, and thats exactly what I did. I was too quick for the guys and Kasey screamed at me to return. I knew deep down he would know where I was heading so I didn't stop. I jumped over many back fences to get as far away from that street as possible. I knew Kasey would be out looking for me and I wanted him to find me, but it didn't happen. Exhausted I sat behind a big bush in a park trying to catch my breath, no cars passed in the quiet street and I was more than panic-stricken, I was almost in shock. Many questions were running through my head, and so many fresh memories of bullying and bombs. I turned my phone back on and ordered a Uber, and sent Kasey a message. The ride arrived five minutes later and the driver wanted to take me to a hospital, but I forced him to drop me in the city.
I found the hotel I had stayed in when I was on the run before, and the clerk gave me a room at the back. I can hide here as long as I want. I had nothing with me and apart from some mean-looking scratches I had survived Lloyd's impending abuse. I made coffee and tried to calm down. The mini bar was a godsend and when the knock on the door came, I rushed to answer it. Clinging to Kasey I started babbling on, I had questions. He had a bottle of wine in his hand and some answers. I let go of him and asked.
"Why?"
"Can I have a drink first?" I sat heavily and he opened the bottle and poured two drinks.
"I see you started without me."
"They were here and I needed them. What was that all about?"
"He is there because he's helping the military with something, they thought he was getting better and he has information that they want."
"How the hell would they think he's getting better, he's a veritable maniac. You heard him he hasn't forgotten me."
"I spoke to dad, he thinks the same way. But because he's no longer Military he didn't have much say in it, he only consulted. He was there because he followed us, he knew something was up after we saw Walsham. Lloyd has information on a terrorist cell operating in Australia, his cellmate was connected to it, and they talked about it a lot before the man died. He was promised a reprieve if he told them everything. He was conning them Adam, his outburst tonight suggests that he didn't know anything, he just wanted out."
"Has he gone back?"
"Not yet, they want to get a psych in first."
"What are we going to do Kasey, he will escape and come after us."
"He won't Adam he's heavily guarded."
"He will, I know he will."
"The house will be closed up and we have to forget it exists. Jimmy leased six such houses to the Military years ago." I sipped on my wine and felt a lot better but I was tired, the adrenaline was passing and making me relax.
"Adam we are safe, and he will be shifted back to the facility."
"He will escape, I tell you. He's already on the outside, why would you all think he wouldn't try for his freedom?" He stared at me then he picked his phone up.
"Dad, I am with Adam he's okay for now, are you sure Lloyd is heavily guarded because Adam thinks he will try to escape, even if it costs him his life." He went quiet and then I saw something I rarely see him do, tears started forming in his eyes.
"I knew it, he's out there, and after us. How could they be so stupid? We have to go home and get Sam Kasey, he will target him first." He put the phone down and looked at me.
"He snapped his guard's neck and took his gun, then shot his way out of the house. Sam, Billy and mum have been moved over to Joe's place and our house is heavily guarded. There are snipers on Joe's roof. Dad is beside himself he doesn't know what to do next because he's only a consultant. We have to get out of here, he thinks Lloyd knows where you went."
"How could he know that?"
"He knew about the safe houses, and he would know from the court case about this hotel, it's the one you stayed in that night."
"What the hell do we do?"
"Dad has a plan. Grab that wine bottle Adam, we have to move."
I followed him down the fire escape at the back of the hotel, a car pulled up and dad told us to get in. He had a gun sitting in the front seat, I never said a word to him, I was so mad he didn't tell us. He drove to the drop-in centre and parked the car behind it.
"Where else would we go Adam, we can hide out here."
My head was pounding by the time we went inside. The commander was there with Jameel.
"General the area has been secured, all phones off and I suggest no more contact with the military for now. Let's just wait and see."
"How many men are sleeping here tonight?"
"Six Lieutenant, they have been worded up and offered safe passage into the city. But they all want to stay."
"They have to go, if he finds us it will be a blood bath."
"Adam you need to get some rest." Dad looked at me.
"Why? it's me he wants so I am willing to sacrifice myself for everyone's safety."
"Why would I think otherwise"
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because it was top secret and you never said you were going house breaking tonight. Otherwise, I would have discouraged it. Jimmy and Walsham had already told you there was nothing to see. I knew something was up when you both left, so I followed."
"So they are in on it too?"
"No, they know nothing, only the house was leased to the military."
"What do you want me to do?"
"Get some sleep."
"And mum, Billy, and Sam?"
"Trisha's place is crawling with swat teams, he won't get past the front gate."
"You reckon?" I laughed because I was more tired than anything else. He stared at me and went to make coffee.
Bill wasn't around and the commander and Kasey once again tried to move the innocent men out, but they weren't going anywhere. They were ordered to go back upstairs and lay low. While this was going on I noticed Jameel had positioned himself by the window and was texting someone. Normally I wouldn't think this was odd, but Sam's reaction to him the day he came over with Evans itched at the back of my neck. I shook the feeling off and sat in the kitchen. I wanted to text Trish but was told to continue to have no contact with anyone. Again my itch was back and it was getting urgent I speak to Kasey. When he came into the kitchen to find me I grabbed him.
"Sam."
"He's fine Adam, calm down."
"No not that. Sam, he was upset the day Jameel came to the house, maybe he knew him, maybe he just had a feeling, but he didn't like him that much."
"Georgio checked him out."
"I just saw him texting on his phone, do you think that's where Lloyd is getting his information from?" He again stared at me, He was fighting with his inner self. On one hand, he has to believe my instincts. But on the other, I know he thinks I am overreacting.
"Think about it Kasey no one is allowed to use their phones, why did he use his?" He looked at me again and then he said.
"I will be back." I heard a gun shot and a hard thump coming from the next room, then I heard an almighty crash.
As soon as Kase stepped towards the opening, the door of the kitchen burst open and I came face to face with my killer.
"There you are my pretty boy," Kasey dived for him and he swung his gun up and hit Kase on the head. He landed face down on the floor and was out cold. I stood up and started running, something I like to do. I ran past dad who had a knife at his neck, Jameel was helping Lloyd and the commander was lying on the floor groaning.
"Adam run, for your life," Dad ordered. I heard a shot and something zipped past my head, I hoped to god that both Kasey and dad would be all right. I was prepared to give my own life so they could live and I had finally found my inner strength.
"Come here you slimy cock sucker." I ran upstairs, the guys were all alert and I was immediately pushed behind them, they were shielding me. Lloyd followed shooting his gun at random but not hitting anything in particular.
"What are you going to do, shoot us all Major?"
"No, I just want that fucking homo," I heard a crash coming from downstairs, then another single shot rang out. He started forcefully pushing the men aside to get to me, then we were face to face. I was silently saying my prayers and the room was dead quiet. He looked into my eyes and I saw his madness. I could feel his breath on my face as he grabbed my neck and pulled me in for a deep kiss. Then he whispered in my ear. When I managed to pull away he was standing there with a shocked look on his face, then I heard.
"Don't call our friend a homo scum." I stepped away and he fell flat on his face, the gun was quickly kicked to the side. I looked up and saw Mark standing there smiling. When I looked down Lloyd had a large filleting knife sticking out of his back.
"Adam, Adam are you okay?" I heard dad call out, the stairs thumped as Kasey and dad burst into the sleeping quarters.
"Jameel?" I quietly asked.
"Disabled." Kasey grabbed me.
"Thank god." I slumped into his arms.
