Adam
Chapter 90
Maxieplus
When we got back home I could smell the roast in the oven, mum and dad had left early, so unless Nat was here, mum has done the honours. Love a roast. Kasey unloaded the car, Sam ran off to find Billy and I went upstairs to change. It wasn't long before Kasey was all over me again, so we spent a half hour connecting.
"Adam, I want you to style the new apartment, get a consultant to help but I need your style."
"No problem Kase, it will have to be top shelf if we are going to lease it out to businesses."
"Do what you want, but I want your keen eye on it."
So I either get to go shopping again or I hire someone to do it for me. Where is Nat when you need her, she has done a great job with the restaurant but unfortunately, she has enough to do.
Mum and dad were supervising the boys. I noticed she had the tweezers out and was shaping her eyebrows so I sat with her and took the steel item out of her hand.
"Let me do that mum."
"I either get them right or walk around looking lopsided, thank you son."
I pulled those babies out within an inch of their existence and she ended up with movie star eyebrows to die for. After she shrieked and then looked again, she kissed me and said.
"Just for that you get an extra roast potato, I love them."
"Do you think I should do mine too son?" Dad smiled.
"No." I smiled at him, his were bushy but perfect.
Trish and Joey eventually arrived they had gone to see his mum, she had provided lunch so they weren't very hungry.
"I will put a couple aside in case you get the munchies later on."
Kasey had been reading something and it was like he had a great idea, he jumped up stripped his jeans off and then headed for the pool, the boys were instantly all over him.
Joe wasn't in the mood he had eaten far too much so he decided he needed a nap on the pool lounge.
"It was a bit full on at the cabin this time." Tell me something I didn't know Trish.
"Kasey has us pencilled in for a weekend soon just on our own."
"I think Joey and I will go there for a few days, on our own too."
"My problem is Sam, we can't take him without Billy."
"He will be fine son, just take him Sam needs his mates there otherwise he will be bored." Mum smiled.
"You don't mind?"
"Not at all that will give your father and me time to organise the new apartment."
"Kasey said to get a stylist in."
"Or we can ask Nat."
"She's too busy."
"She only has to look at the floor plan and suggest colours I can do the rest." Mum was making it so simple.
"Or you can ask Cindy." I heard coming from behind me. Kasey was drying himself off and when he put his bathrobe on he sat between my legs.
"Cindy?"
"Nat was telling me that Cindy dabbled in interior design, and she helped her do the restaurant, just the colours and flooring. Maybe we should give her the job of doing all four of them.
"According to Susan, Steff was going to get a lady from Melbourne to do it. She's a friend of the cousins who own the market there, she does apartment buildings."
"Maybe it would be advantageous to send her the plans," Dad said.
"There's no hurry let's talk to Nat first. I would much rather get someone we know to do it." I thought they might like the extra money. So I will stick with Cindy. She was a lovely blue-eyed blonde, not at all stupid. We had talked at the wedding about Nat turning up late all the time. She wasn't mad at her, just disappointed, but the train in the basement has been all forgotten now. I think placing it in the basement put an end to it, no one wants to be down there alone.
"We could always buy furniture and add colour after it's all set," Trish said.
"You would settle for second best Mrs Merchant?" She blushed, then I whispered in her ear.
"Image my lovely, image."
She giggled.
We stuffed ourselves to the limit on roast and everyone was getting tired, so we all decided to go our separate ways and get some rest.
Sam was reading his book again when I went to say goodnight to him and Kasey was sitting on our balcony reading a report.
I crawled into bed and went to sleep.
We all have work today and Jessie is finally starting so I have to be there, let's hope Ethan doesn't jump him. Kasey was excited because Steff was going to give him driving lessons up and down the river, he would pick it up fast.
Buns went into the big plastic container and when he came in he was perfect, not unlike Tim. He had a great shape going on and his hair was tossed to within an inch of being a classic model. He was also very friendly and was so happy to be able to keep his job within the company. He was telling us he had to move to this side of the city to save on travelling expenses, he was saving to buy his own apartment and that takes priority. He has found a cheap shared flat and is very eager to get on with it.
I admired him for thinking about his future, he's not unlike me in a way but I did have help. Lynnie was smitten but not to the point she jumped him. Ethan of course 'sort of' knew him as did Trish and Gloria. Tim straightened up and flexed as he shook his hand and Anne was dying to talk to us about her weekend.
She sat with me and I took her hand.
"Firstly what is your verdict?'
"She's perfect Adam, up to date and is running her business from home still. Pete and I had a wonderful few days away but I felt underdressed, she outdid me on every level. I have no idea why I thought she may be a country hick but she's far from it. She is from the city and misses being here I didn't say anything much about the job except I will ring her if I hear of something."
"Good girl, so we offer her a job at Northside?"
"Yes, she's perfect."
"And Pete?"
"I met all his friends and they are a great bunch of people, so down to earth. I got the feeling he was showing me off to them, it was a nice feeling Adam."
"I guess he's very proud of you being on his arm."
"He is different, I am not used to being treated as someone special."
"You are, believe me, you are." I kissed her cheek.
"You can have the honour of telling her if you like."
"She will be so happy, maybe I will give her a ring later on today."
"Just tell her I will catch up with her when she appears, we will start her on the men's side of things then see how we go from there, and we have to think about accommodation."
"That's the next thing, Pete is in a shared house with other recruits he's going to look for a flat."
"What department is he in?"
"Security at the moment, he does the fed building security."
"Okay, do you think he will ever leave the military?"
"He wants to but his contract is for another year so I think he will leave then."
"I will talk to dad."
"Why?"
"There is security work at the build, you remember the commander, Tim's friend, he runs it?"
"Yes he's a nice guy. It's almost on the other side of town."
"Perfect and there's plenty of cheap accommodation on that side at the moment, but it will change when the build is completed."
"Thank you for helping Adam, I was going to ask if she could live with us but I think it would be a bit too much."
"It will, leave it to me."
I didn't know if dad had the clout to get someone out of the military but I can ask, and I have to ask him about Steff's problem.
It was around lunchtime I was watching Jessie work on a Major when I heard the noise. I looked out the front and two military trucks had pulled up. I saw a heap of guys load up and one in particular I would know anywhere, Kasey.
He was in full battle gear, and dad was giving the orders. They drove off towards the inner city, it was awesome to see him all dressed up again.
I rang Evans when I settled down.
"They are on a mission Adam, and I can't reveal it's purpose."
"Evans, just fucking tell me."
"They are raiding a shipping company, two guys are pissing off the military so they are going there to ruffle a few feathers, don't tell Steff,"
I laughed, Kase had got in before I said anything, hopefully that would be the end of it all.
"By the way Adam, I will have a salad roll."
"Coming up Evans, give me fifteen minutes."
I didn't know how long Kasey would be away but I got him a couple of rolls also, I sat with Evans and we talked about Kasey insisting that he is involved, and it was all hush hush because they didn't want Steff to know. Georgio had done his job well and found out the cousins were running a tobacco importing business on the side, so they were there to close the operations down. Then the federal police will charge them. This won't help Susan with her mother-in-law but it will put her on notice.
"Evans, how hard is it for a private to get out of the army?"
"It depends on the circumstances, if he's shit at his work then the military will cancel his contract, a little background would help Adam."
I brought him up to date on private Pete and he looked at his records.
"He's earmarked for the airport Adam, they will move him there next week. He's very good at his job and they expect big things from him." I relaxed because the airport is on the north side of town.
"The rent is still cheap over that way, if he doesn't want to bunk in with anyone."
"I will tell her to start looking then, it will mean Anne will have to commute if she decides to move in with them."
"She will, but it's not that hard just two bus rides."
It was after this conversation Kasey arrived back with dad. I couldn't stop staring at him, he was his old magnificent self in that uniform. I was a bit miffed he started changing, but he did say if he was caught he might get reprimanded. Evans left and in his jeans and shirt Kase sat and opened his lunch. I was waiting for him to say something and I didn't want to get Evans into trouble so I said nothing.
"You were asking about Anne's boyfriend?'
"How did you know?"
"Evans left his file open." He closed it off and I told him the same story I had told Evans."
"Are you going to look at a flat for them?"
"No, I was just going to tell Anne and she can do that, or tell Pete."
"Sure." He grinned.
"I don't want to interfere Kasey they can do all that."
"Adam, your account is big and you never use it, if you wanted to interfere it wouldn't even make a dent."
"Oh, I don't like to use the account. It's your money, not mine."
"It's our money and you don't seem to object when Trish and mum use the card."
"Point taken, but I think Anne and Pete should be doing this themselves."
"Okay have it your way."
"Why the uniform and the big drama leaving the building?" I couldn't help myself. He grinned because he knew me.
"It's been closed down and the guys are under arrest, the customs minister will send the Italian consul a very stern letter."
"Why you and dad?"
"We looked great didn't we?"
"You know you did." I blushed.
"We were there to look them in the eyes and tell them Steff and Susan are friends of ours and they can tell their relatives it's hands off or they won't be able to dock in our ports."
"You can do that?"
"Yes, their containers will be held up with scans, every one of them. They may not even bother to trade here."
"So Susan is safe then?"
"Yes, she can relax but from what Steff tells me she was ready for a fight."
"She was."
"Next time we go to the cabin they won't be with us."
"How come?"
"He said she was excited about the flat and wanted to get started having weekends there."
"Problem three solved today."
"It was getting a little crowded and little Tick won't shut up about the gully, he didn't sleep well last night so they thought a change of scenery would be good for him, like the beach."
"He will love it there also. I guess Sam will too."
"Don't fear Adam, I have this." Where have I heard that before?
"Have you got much on this afternoon?"
"Yes and no, you and I have a meeting after I eat this."
"Where?"
"In Mick's offices, they have a script for us to look at. Any changes you think of you have to jot down so they can fix it."
"I can do that."
"Not too many. Keep in mind there's some poetic licence going on. Some extra drama, some stretched truths."
"I understand, it all adds to a good story."
"You are off the hook with Cody's grandparents too, he has agreed to narrate the documentary for us. Their story isn't as great as Adele and Fred's but it's very interesting. Mick and his men are going to start filming at their beach house."
"That is so quick, has it been researched?"
"Cody has all the facts and Fred built the beach house but it was designed by the grandparents. His mum had a lot of information, and Cody has written it all down and he has the plans for all the buildings they were involved in."
"He will look good on screen."
"He will." He washed his hands and then he said.
"Okay let's go."
I lingered because he hadn't kissed me yet, so the door slowly closed and we did our thing.
"Now Adam, this is the initial screenplay, we want you to read it and comment. This other folder has your lines in it."
"Okay Mick, I will give you my honest opinion."
The meeting didn't last that long, and I got a run down from the boys on what they had come up with. It all sounded very professional and I hoped I was up to the task.
Another folder was handed to me and it contained the actors they had hired, they didn't want that changed just wanted my thoughts.
I left the building with a promise from Kasey, he is expected to be all uniformed up when we get home today. He wanted to do it in his office but I left and said.
"Later lieutenant." I could hear Evan's laughter.
Nothing much else happened today, Jessie worked with Lynnie perfectly. Every now and then I could hear them giggling. Anne was told to tell Pete the news and he should start looking for a place. But he has to keep it under wraps because the info hasn't been made public as yet. She kissed me and ran out the back to make a call.
My day was perfect. It got even more perfect when we got home, his uniform was on and he was once again, giving the orders.
"We got the go-ahead to move in next weekend," Joey said at dinner.
"That soon?" I looked at Trish.
"We will rent for a month. That way we can take our time."
"We will be at the cabin, so I can't give you a hand," Kasey said.
"It's okay Joe, I will get the boys onto it." Dad offered.
Joe was conflicted, he wanted to come to the cabin with us, but he also wanted to move.
"Can't you go the following weekend?"
"No." Kasey smiled at me.
Trish was both excited and sad to be moving, even though it was only just across the road she wanted to be near us. I know why, she is still worried that something bad is going to happen. I spent some of the night telling her we would probably be over there with her most of the time.
The rest of the night I spent with Kasey on our balcony reading. I made some notes but nothing significant. He watched me then he read what I had just covered.
"It is good Kasey, they have done their homework."
"They had help Adam, the 'Being Adele Banks' documentary schooled them on what kind of person she was, and they scoured the newspaper archives for any snippets of them both. They went to a lot of business meetings together, and Fred went overseas a lot, just to keep up on the current trends."
"I hope you haven't any plans to go."
"Not a chance."
"How is Bill did you see him today?"
"Only for a minute, he was going to the chill-out centre to talk to some of the men."
"Is it almost done?"
"Yes I can take you there tomorrow if you like, I have to go look at the cranes they will need overhauling."
"Do you have enough money?"
"Yes Adam, we have enough. When it's finished we can relax."
"I thought you said you were going to start on a canal project."
"That comes later, it's in the works but I don't want to overload my guys."
"Have you bought the land?"
"Not yet, it was just a rumour it was up for sale, my sources tell me the family that owns it won't sell it to just anyone, they will be checking me out before they approach me."
"Really? I hope they aren't checking your tackle out in the process."
"They aren't, they have already been talking to Walsham at the bank, he knows them. Old family money from the ceramic trade."
"He will be on your side, you have made a lot of money for the Banks trust, and the bank."
He looked reflective and leaned back putting the paperwork down.
"I don't know if I want to go ahead with it. Do I need the stress?"
"Probably not, but you can't help yourself."
"And there's that."
"Changing the subject we had better get onto buying Joey and Trish a housewarming present."
"Have you looked?"
"A little, but nothing much is jumping out at me. Sylvia is right, there's not much out there at the moment."
"Okay we can wait and see, it doesn't have to be straight away."
"I still have to finish off the attic there's one corner to go through maybe there's some buried treasure there." I smiled.
"When you have nothing better to do."
"Are we still on for the cabin this weekend?"
"Billy will want to come, that means mum and dad."
"I don't mind Kase,"
"Maybe the weekend after so Joey can come."
"And there lies our problem,"
He laughed, then kissed me.
"Let's go to bed."
"Let's." I smiled.
It was a late night again, that man of mine pulled out all the stops to make sure I slept well.
"We spent the night packing up unused stuff, like wedding presents," Trish said in the morning.
"Are you eager to go?" I lifted my eyebrows.
"Yes and no, I am excited to have my first home, but more excited Joey will be beside me. After all that stuff with my family I am more than ready to continue with just him."
"And me."
"And you." She kissed my cheek.
"Is there anything you want?"
"No, I will need to buy some kitchen stuff, that will come later, I will be too busy settling in."
"And you will do it perfectly."
Billy and Sam were still reading their books, and this morning they were halfway through and still making sure they were on the same page. They like to discuss the events between themselves.
"How did you go with the movie stuff?"
"Good it's all perfect mum, I made some notes but they weren't important. I don't know the actors they hired but I will have to rely on Mick's judgement on that."
"He will know Adam, where's Kasey?"
"He got a phone call." I smiled.
"It's a bit early."
"Must be important mum."
"Now who wants breakfast?"
"I'll start it, sit and finish your coffee."
Mum worked on scrambled eggs and I did the toast, halfway through Kasey came out smiling.
"Rewarding phone call Kase?"
"Yes and no, it was Walsham, we have been invited to the Wikinsons for dinner this Saturday." I handed the kids breakfast to him, he placed them in front of the boys and then took their books.
"And who are the Wilkinsons?"
"They own that parcel of land I was talking about."
"Why dinner, I thought they weren't going to sell?"
"They have decided to sell but not to just anyone, they want to meet prospective buyers. According to Walsham, we are first on the list, so dinner at eight."
"Dinner suits?"
"Apparently yes."
"Do you want me to come?" Dad asked.
"I don't think so this time, something is itching at the back of my neck. I have the feeling this isn't about negotiating for some land."
"Well sing out if you need me."
Kasey looked a little nervous, and worried. If this is another set-up, I will scream, he doesn't deserve it.
I showered and readied myself for work, took our dinner suits out of their covers to air them out, then I went to make sure Sam had cleaned his teeth. When I arrived back he was on the phone again, to Georgio. He was doing a little spying of his own on the Wilkinsons.
I sent Jimmy an email, he may know them and I asked for any information he had on them explaining why I wanted it.
"Will Georgio be able to do this Kasey?"
"Yes Adam, Chloe is on a two-week break the guys only need her for reshoots."
"Okay, but I don't think he did very good on the Evans case," I smirked.
"He didn't, although to be fair he didn't have much time to collect it."
"The same as now."
He stared at me and I lifted my eyebrows.
"Is Sam ready?"
"Yes, Kase."
I did a little research on my own. I was ready to go to work and Kasey had shot off to get Sam and to ready himself. The Wilkinson family are old Brisbane socialites they made their money from ceramics and ironmongery, in other words tiling and ironwork. The family originated from Italy and the grandfather started up the businesses after he arrived on our shores. Their only daughter Edith married a Wilkinson hence the family name change. Their son Ken jnr married Mercedes Stevenson. Between the two of them, they owned the biggest ceramic factory in Australia and founded many charities and a big import company. So there's no mention of any children but there was a photo. They looked like they had money and the photo was taken at a Never Give Up charity night with Cody and Dan. It's hard to tell what they were like but I am guessing the charity side of it, was a hint.
The boys were ready, mum, dad, Joe and Trish were all waiting for me to finish my reading. Kasey took my phone and said.
"We haven't got all day Adam."
"Sorry, let's go." I stood up and we all headed for the school then our jobs.
I wasn't worried about them, land comes and goes up here but I was worried about Kasey. Will it all be too much for him? I don't know, but if they think they will stiff him then we will have a problem. I will pull the plug and if he wants to do something we can look elsewhere.
The salon was eagerly waiting for us today, it enveloped us as soon as Trish and I walked in the door. Tim was already there with Jessie, they were getting some wigs done, these were for Lucy Loosebox she has a big production show coming up and needs fifteen wigs styled. She must have added to her line up, she usually only has five. Jessie teased the life out of a big blonde one then he added another wig to bulk it up and combed the teased one into it, it was huge.
"Wow, will it stand up?"
"Of course it will Adam, a ton of pins will force it into place."
He proceeded to get his hairpins ready and I looked at Tim.
He shrugged and went about doing his red wig, maybe he's a little jealous but let's hope it doesn't make him leave me and join the commander's security team.
"Okay, breakfast is ready when you are."
"Sure boss and thank you."
"He's good Adam, even I wouldn't attempt that maybe Marko would, but not me."
"So you get along with him?"
"Of course, he's a nice guy and talented."
"For a straight guy that is."
"For a hairdresser, he's top shelf."
"Good."
I was
serv
ing the last minute bookings this morning, and they were few and far between, Marko and James were flat-out creating new styles for their customers and Gloria was posing in her mirror, she's so gorgeous. Anne looked happy and smiled her way through a matron's hair do, she was talking nonstop about her Peter. I looked at Trish and she rolled her eyes then she mouthed.
"She's back." I smiled and did a happy dance inside.
I sat at my station and read some more on the Wilkinsons of Brisbane, there wasn't much, mostly the factory and charity work. I was starting on the third page when I saw the photo, it was old maybe from the seventies but there she was as large as life. Mercedes and Adele posing for a photo. I nearly cried it was a new photo I hadn't seen before, although Adele was a bit older than her they had a connection as they had their arms around each other posing.
I took a screenshot of it and saved it to my album, I will show Kasey later.
Which reminds me. I had better text him and find out what he wants for lunch. After I did this I went into the tea room and made coffee. Jimmy's reply came through then.
'Old money, friends of Adele and Freds. Mercedes is a distant cousin of Adele's but about twenty years younger. Adele got her into modelling for some Australian women's magazines. The family business is where our beautiful tiles and ironwork come from, it was their first big contract as a married couple. Tell Kasey to keep it real they are the good guys, so he's not to expect anything but honesty from them.'
'Thank you. I have been researching them they seemed nice'
'They are.' I was surprised he answered me.
I sent him the photo and he gave me a thumbs up then he wanted to know how Sam and Billy were. I spent the next ten minutes telling him whatever news I had and then he had to go. Dieter was hurrying him up, they were going cave diving.
I grabbed the fish and chips and headed for Kasey's office, before Evans could announce my arrival I was through his door and in his arms, he had missed me.
There was plenty for us to share with him so he sat with us and we ate.
I passed the photo over to Kasey, and then I let him read Jimmy's texts. I also gave him a rundown on the Wilkinson family history. He stared at me and picked his phone up.
"Cancel that request Georgio, thank you." Then he hung up.
"So Adam, do you need extra work?" He asked, I laughed.
"No, I'm just a stylist. I only know how to search things like that."
"You could have fooled me."
"Well it's easy, they are elites so I went to the charity pages which led me to their family history. The photo was taken at a charity night years ago."
"Again, do you want some work?" I put a chip in my mouth and moaned.
He would guess what kind of work I wanted.
"Their old ceramic works were on that land you are looking at Kasey I remember seeing some old signs on the way to work," Evans said.
"Where is it?" He asked me.
"Inland around twenty miles away they purchased a lot of farmland and moved their operations onto it." I said.
Mum came in and she looked at the big parcel of chips. she had a plate in her hand.
"The girls are hungry, the smell is intoxicating."
"Take some petty cash and buy up big mum, get plenty for the guys too."
"I will." She took a handful of chips and left us to it.
"So Jimmy says they are the good guys, I will go with that but any sign of skulduggery I will pull the plug. Adam it's a future project, something we won't start immediately."
"Good, because you still have a lot of work to do Kase, I worry about you."
"Then don't. I am on top of the world and things have improved greatly with my life." Evans took a handful of chips and left us alone. I moved my seat closer to him, then we almost touched noses.
"Kasey I know you are trying hard to calm down, but I can still worry can't I?"
"Yes Adam, because with you worrying it gives me more courage to make me a better person."
"You already are." I kissed him.
The days went by and the big night arrived, we dressed but then dropped our pants to have one last go at each other before we left. Sam was having a sleepover with Billy so we went to say goodnight. Mum took some photos and Trish played with my hair.
"Good luck son."
"You need to tell Kasey that."
"No, you. Your heads up will be when she suggests you go to another room and get to know each other better."
"Business is done by the wives sort of thing?"
"Yes darling, so be on your guard." Joey also had to have some last-minute photos taken with us, and then we headed for the car. Kasey held my hand all the way there, it was a sprawling property with a huge mansion sitting at the end of a long driveway. He parked the car and we headed for the front door. it wasn't what I expected. They both met us at the door and I instantly fell in love with their simplicity and genuine welcome.
The entrance hall was bigger than ours and covered in a beautiful marble floor.
"Follow me, I hope you don't mind, but we will be eating in the kitchen tonight," Mercedes said with a big red lipstick smile.
"No problem, we love kitchens. Lead the way."
A couple in their sixties were dressed the nines and I could see they both looked after themselves. I stood there taking in all that was beautiful in their home.
"We have closed off seventy per cent of it Adam, it is a bit too big, but it came with the farmland." She giggled.
"Well it's superb, do you open it to the public?" She looked at me.
"Don't get it into your head you can turn my home into a museum. I think you have enough." I relaxed, and she has done her homework.
"I was thinking about a movie set."
"Not going to happen. The kids have long left home and it's just us two and a few staff members. To be honest I don't want anyone rooting around in my home with cameramen." I giggled.
We walked down to the back of the house and were gobsmacked, her simple kitchen was huge and ultra-modern, with an elegantly set table at one end. Some plush lounges in the middle space, and the kitchen was all lit up and sparkling at the other end. The view of the surrounding mountains was perfect and the sun was going down in the west.
"Now boys the rules, take your ties and jackets off and I will hang them in the cupboard. Mother has cooked an amazing meal for us tonight so be prepared to be overfed." Ken smiled at us. We did relax and I looked at Kasey.
"Told you."
"Yes, keep it simple you said."
Mercedes was a vibrant, no-nonsense sort of lady. The complete opposite of what I thought she would be, and Ken I know was trying to relax us with his charming smile. By the look of his rough hand's, he's always been a worker, you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their hands.
"Now, drinks boys?"
"Just a wine thank you Ken,"
"Kasey?"
"The same."
He walked off to organise the drinks and Mercedes bid us to sit at her table.
"How are you both settling in at Adele and Fred's place?"
"It's wonderful, and full of cameras at the moment." I smiled.
She laughed.
"The kids will be liking that pool, its a beauty."
"They are never out of it." Kasey also smiled.
"How's the build coming along, I believe the restaurant is going to be the crowning glory. We can't wait to try it."
"Yes it's coming along nicely, I have a wonderful team on it." Ken came back with the drinks.
"There you go, and if you need more just grab the bottle out of the fridge." Down to earth or what?
"So you moved everything up here to get this magnificent place?" I looked around.
"No, we moved up here because we ran out of room, the house just happened to be here. It's huge Adam, I will show you some of it before you leave, and there are some things I need to give to you."
"Not a box of old cameras I hope." I laughed.
"Yes, the cameramen are buried in the cellar." She screamed laughing then got up to check the stove.
"Soups on come and get it." Oh, it's a help yourself night, she is so me.
"Saves me carting heavy pots over to the table, of course when we have to do the special nights we have staff for that. Tonight is for family only."
We stood up and went to the kitchen bench, filled our soup bowls then sat down, miraculously freshly baked bread had appeared and the vegetable soup hit the spot.
