Adam 40

Sam was put to bed, and Kasey was still researching his job for dad, I slipped under the table because I was bored and he opened his legs. I didn't want to get him off, I was just warming him up, he snapped the lid closed and then stood up.

"Let's go." He moved to go into the bedroom and I shuffled behind him. Lights were turned off, and he was splayed naked on the bed so I went back to my administration.

"We might make the living room a bit bigger Adam, more room, and maybe we can cantilever it out so we are on top of the forest."

"Maybe we should just leave it the way it is."

"Maybe you're right, can you move up here I want to kiss you."

Once again Sam crawled in with us, I don't mind in the least if he does that, he likes daddy cuddles during the night but his sleep is disturbed a little in the process.

The next day he didn't walk Sam to school he drove him because it was wet and rainy, he also dropped me off and said he would see me later on because he had to get back to work.

I opened up and did my thing and while I was waiting for staff to arrive my father called in. I made him coffee and buttered an iced bun for him.

"How's mum?"

"She's good Steven, settling back into a normal life again."

"Good, we are buying the cabin two fifty all up, so we got a bargain."

"That's great son, we might use it some weekends if you don't mind."

"Of course, I don't mind, I will get you a key made."

"And Kasey can afford it?"

"More than afford it dad. As I said he has money and plenty of it."

I smiled because he's not here to play happy families.

"Adam I wanted to touch base with you about the work I sent Kasey. It's not big but I thought it may help him if he does some investigating again. You know keep his mind well oiled."

"I sort of guessed that dad, I know you wouldn't throw him into the deep end so soon."

"We won't son, I just wanted to give you the heads up, and if he gets too involved with his research let me know and I will pull the plug."

"What's it about dad?"

"I can only tell you it's to do with his time away, just an offshoot of the corruption. People here have been named and we want to know about them."

"So he's just preparing a profile on them?"

"Yes son, nothing too hard for him but it will keep him occupied."

"That's okay dad." I smiled, at least he's running it past me.

"The other thing I wanted to talk about is this plan for him to move in here, do you think that's wise?"

"Wise or not dad, but I'm doing much the same as you are, he's not feeling confident on his own at home and the office, he's sort of shut away from everyone. So I wanted him to sit here and read, at least he will see humans again. I know it won't be for long he will get sick of the interruptions, but he did ask me."

"I will look into getting him a bigger office son, maybe it will help if he has a better view."

"Okay, tell me about it."

"I want to shift him up a couple of floors, you are right he's shut away where he is, so let me think on it."

"I will dad in the meantime he will sit here, but to be honest now he has some `real' work to do again, he may even stay at home."

The staff was arriving and they all saluted dad, he laughed, and shortly after he left my new stylist arrived.

"Hi I'm Gloria, you must be Adam."

"I am Gloria pleased to meet you." I introduced her to everyone she looked like a pleasant well-groomed sort of girl, so I sat her down and gave her some paperwork to fill out which she did. I showed her where she will be working and where everything is stored.

"If you need anything just ask Lynnie our go-to girl." I smiled. Her cv certainly was up to our standards, but I had told Trish to just give her trims and walk-ins for a few days, I wanted to see how she handled the customers first.

She made coffee and then sat at her station talking to Anne and Eva. I did a cut and set on an old client and while I did, I watched her do a military guy's hair, he only wanted the standard look, so that was an easy one, and they did chatter like old friends.

Around lunchtime, I decided she was going to fit in nicely, and her work was very satisfactory. There was still that nagging feeling she wasn't what she presented and then it hit me, how awesome and how clever for not saying anything to me. I think she is going to be very good for our salon. I won't tell anyone, there is a reason she hasn't, and I agreed with her. Being trans in the outside world is hard enough, but maintaining that persona in an everyday job would be hard for her. I found no faults other than her voice was a little deeper but so was Annes, what a great woman.

I smiled a lot during the afternoon and many times I asked her if everything was alright and she said it was.

By the time Kasey walked in to go get Sam she was laughing and joking with Eva and her customer and generally being one of the troop.

We walked up to kindy and the day had turned cold, another storm was brewing so we thought we had better go at a faster pace. Sam wasn't feeling the best and when I touched his forehead it was warm, maybe a cold or flu. Kasey piggy backed him home and we just got inside when the rain started, another wet night.

"Okay Sammy into your pyjamas and dressing gown, you have to stay warm baby."

"I don't feel so good daddy."

I got some phone advice from mum, so I gave him a baby aspirin and made him drink a big glass of water.

"I will keep him home tomorrow Kasey he might share his cold around to the other kids their parents won't appreciate it."

"Yes good idea, how are you feeling baby?" He held Sam's hand.

"Can I watch tv daddy, on the couch?"

"Of course." He picked him up and took him over to the sofa I placed a blanket over him. He can stay there and we can keep our eye on him. I tried to feed him but he wasn't hungry so I gave him more water, he will sleep with us tonight I would feel much better with him there.

He went to our bed early and last I checked he was fast asleep and Kasey was closing his storybook.

"He should sleep through Kase."

"Poor little mite I feel for him."

"I guess this is the first of many childhood sicknesses we have to suffer."

He took my hands and kissed me, then he went back to his very important work for dad.

The next morning I had to go in to work and cancel my appointments I wanted to stay with Sam all day, just to watch him. The weather was terrible outside, Kasey insisted I drive, he said at least the car will keep me dry and warm. I will grab the appointment book, make a few phone calls and get right back home as quickly as I can.

Sam had slept through the night, he looked a little better this morning, and even managed some toast, maybe a twenty-four hour bug, hopefully, it will be gone by tomorrow.

I kissed my baby goodbye and Kasey got an extra one on the lips then I took the lift downstairs. I sat for a few minutes shivering until the heater clicked in then I drove out of the car park and headed for the salon. The carpark is at the end of a small laneway and I had to go ten meters up to the main road and do a right-hand turn. The lights changed to green and I started turning onto the main road, an almighty bang was heard and felt and my car slid sideways into a lamppost. I was a bit disorientated but deemed myself unhurt. I looked around and I could see a big red truck backing away from my car which moaned as it broke contact, it skidded on the wet road then accelerated again and hit me full force. It was then I knew this was no accident.

I put my driver's side window down, there was no way I could get out the door so I undid my seatbelt and got a hard grip on the pole that was nearly bent in two, then I pulled my body weight out of the window.

I hit the concrete with my shoulder and head, my legs struggled to find purchase but finally, I pushed my feet up against the car door and heaved myself clear just as the other driver rammed my car again. By this time a small crowd had appeared and someone helped me up.

"That driver is crazy, we better get out of the way, he's going to kill somebody." Someone said to me, I hobbled into the laneway, my car was blocking it and me. I pulled my phone out and rang Kasey.

"Kasey I need help here, I am at the other end of the lane someone's ramming the car."

"He's run off, I can hear the police siren, are you okay mister?" A man asked.

"I think so, is there any blood anywhere?" He looked me over and by the time he had told me he didn't see anything, Kasey was running up the laneway.

"Adam are you alright?"

I nodded yes and almost fell into his arms. He guided me around the back of the car it was t-boned and a complete write-off, the whole left side was smashed to a pulp.

"Where is the driver?"

"He ran off that way mister." The guy that helped me pointed towards the main street. The cops screamed to a halt and it seemed half the police force was out today, a military truck arrived also, Kasey had said we may have needed backup to get me clear of the car.

"Thank god you're alright Adam, how did you get out?"

"Pure force and luck Kase, otherwise another hit would have seen me squashed to a pulp."

"How many times did he hit you?"

"I counted three times."

"I counted four, and it was deliberate guys, whoever did this meant to do it." I stared at him just as Luca walked up to us.

"What happened Adam?"

"I don't know, this car came out of nowhere I was turning on a green light and he hit me several times."

"He was parked across the road, I have seen the truck there all week, it was like he was waiting for someone. When the lights changed he revved it up and slammed into this man's car." The bystander said.

At that moment another army truck arrived and dad got out with the commander.

"Are you okay Steven?"

"Yes dad, Kasey what about Sam?"

"I called Trish, she's sitting with him." Good.

I took some deep breaths and then my legs started to give way the adrenaline was leaving me. Kasey held me upright and I started shaking, I had to sit down so I found a doorstep to do just that.

Ambos checked me out and Luca's men were interviewing bystanders. Kasey was looking at the car with dad and Keith he shook his head and I could hear him say it's a write-off.

"You reckon?" Dad laughed.

"He was a madman, he just kept backing up and slamming the car." My bystander was saying to one cop.

"Adam, do you feel you need to go to the hospital?"

"No Luca, just home I need a stiff drink."

"Okay I will continue this at your place, let's get you out of the cold."

The six of us walked up the laneway and through the car park then up in the lift, I guess a tow truck will take care of the car.

Sam ran towards me and Trish handed me a brandy.

"Is it bad?" She asked.

"Yes totalled, it won't be going anywhere except to the crusher's yard," I said as I sat down with Sam on my knees. Luca and his offsider sat and he talked to me for a half hour, getting all the information he could. The bystander will be making much the same statement downtown.

"And you didn't see him?

"No I couldn't see anything, I was too busy trying to work out how to get out of the car as quick as possible."

Dad and Keith were talking to Kasey but Kase said he didn't think it was deliberate, who would want to damage Adam, the guy must have been insane.

"Well he nicked off, Luca is there any word on the other car?"

He looked at his offsider who answered.

"Stolen a week ago sir, we will go over it for fingerprints, but if this was deliberate there probably won't be any."

I was confused and kept looking at Kasey, he was deep in conversation with my dad who kept looking at me. Then I remembered something.

"You have to be unseen," I said.

"What does that mean Adam?" Luca asked.

"Kasey said he had to be unseen. When Kasey was in the salon, when he was homeless, he said he had to be unseen." I looked at Kase his face went blank.

"You said it, and we passed it off thinking when you were on the streets you had to be unseen, what if that statement meant you did have to hide."

"Adam, I don't remember saying that, but I believe you. I have no idea what it means." He looked at Keith who shrugged his shoulders.

"General, do you think this is the result of your closing down the smuggling trade?" Luca was on the right track I knew deep down he was.

"Yes, maybe that's a possibility, we haven't been able to get to the top of it yet, they weren't on Kasey's list and no one has mentioned them."

"So why target me?" I asked.

"A warning, this is a warning Adam." Trish offered.

"You may be right Trish, but let's not get ahead of ourselves, Kasey do you remember doing anything else like hiding something in your letters maybe, do you still have them?"Keith asked.

"Yes commander, I will go get them but I looked at them many times, and saw nothing out of the ordinary." He got up and went into his office, I looked at Trish and said.

"And this is how it all starts Trish, one little comment and my life is shit again."

"I understand now, we had better be careful Adam, if we are dealing with a big smuggling cartel anything could happen."

"You don't get my meaning, it starts by turning my life inside out again. I am now once again a target for Kasey's military association. God give me a break, and another thing Luca. If that car was waiting for me to appear from the garage, he wasn't there because Kasey drives it every day, which he doesn't. I do, and I am always taking Sam to kindy in it on bad days, he is a target too." Thank God he was placed back on the sofa when he fell asleep in my arms.

Kasey stopped dead in his tracks, he looked at me and went white as a sheet, it was dad that broke the spell by taking the pile of letters off him. I sat back and passed Trish my empty glass, she poured me another.

"Can I have one too Trish?" Kasey said.

"Anyone else?" She offered.

They all said yes, so she got up and patted my shoulder as she passed to get some glasses. Luca wasn't out of his depth with this one, he's a very clever man, and he's on the ball.

"Can I see those letters when you are finished with them?"

"Trish you had better ring Eva and tell her what happened, ask if she could cancel my appointments for the day."

"Sure boss." She winked and went to the kitchen to do that job for me.

There was a knock on the door and two plainclothes detectives arrived, they pulled Luca into the entrance hall and started whispering to him. I figured it was police business as I took Trisha's hand when she got back.

"And so it starts."

"You move in with me, they won't think to look there."

"I don't want you involved."

"I am already Adam, you move in with me or Eva, but I have the nicer sheets." She smiled.

The guys left and Lucas offsider walked them down to the front of the building.

"Can I see those?" Dad started passing the letters over they had finished with and Luca started wading through them. Trish kept the drinks up but dad stopped at one, Luca didn't drink his at all.

He made two stacks, Kasey had stapled the envelopes to each one and Luca looked at them all again.

When he had finished he put a stack aside and took the ones he had separated.

"There is a memory stick somewhere Kasey, any ideas where it may be?'

"How the hell do you know that?" Keith asked.

"These six are not letters, they are advertising material for memory sticks, junk mail in other words. But if you look at the envelopes they aren't right they are not local they are from Timor, and the dates received coincide with the ship blowing up. I think these have a hidden message in them, do you want your men to look at them closely?"

"If you posted them before you got on the ship you may have posted the memory stick, was there any in your mail?" Dad said.

"No dad, nothing like it, and I certainly didn't have it on me, it makes sense I would do that though, nothing to do with memory loss, more to do with security." Kasey was still looking at me.

"Well, the answer is in those letters." Luca pointed to them.

I will have to remind nona Zena her man is a brilliant detective.

"There is something else."

He handed his phone over to the general who looked at it then he passed it to Keith.

"A note was found in the car this is only a photo of it because of fingerprints, but we don't expect to find any." I eventually got a hold of the phone and the message said.

'Return what's ours and your headache will go away.'

"He wants the memory stick." Well done Luca.

"Why do you think there's a message in those letters?" I asked.

"They are not the normal bulk printed company ones Adam, they are from a small printing business."

"Are you sure you don't want a job with the military Luca?" Keith asked.

"No I am very happy with my work commander, now I have to go and explain to my wife why her favourite hairdresser has to leave town." He patted my shoulder and left us all open-mouthed.

I looked at the three men and didn't feel anything, I couldn't accuse them of anything and I didn't want to. After my last effort, I have decided to take dads advice and grow up.

It was decided that Luca would place plain-clothed men back into the salon, and dad would look after Sams kindy even to escort Kasey and him there, I was to have two if I decided to go into work they will be placed out the front of my building once again. My life isn't my own anymore, like it or hate it. I have to remember that one awful fact.

Trish had to leave, she was going to work and Evans who had turned up was going to escort her and then stay for the day. Wilson had already headed off to be with Eva, and I am staying right here with my Kasey.

"Do you think we should go to the cabin?"

"That will be up to you Adam, if there's going to be a war I would much rather be here, it's easier to protect." I looked over at my display case and thought I may as well pack my beautiful things away just in case. Funny how the mind always makes you think of the mundane things in life, I should be packing Sam off to mum's or better still move him into dads building he would be well and truly safe there.

The men left shortly after Luca got a call to get back to the station. Dad hugged me and whispered.

"I may say Steven you are handling this a lot better."

"I am taking your advice dad, I've got to grow up sometime." I managed to kiss his cheek, he blushed but held me tighter and said.

"Only because I love you, Steven."

"I know you do dad."

Kasey and I sat alone, he had another drink and I abstained. Sam was still fast asleep and when I felt his forehead it was warm but not as hot as yesterday. He will wake up soon and maybe want something to eat, so I rummaged around in the fridge and found some stuff to make him a sandwich. Kasey was deep in thought he had photographed the memory stick letters and transferred them to his laptop.

"I can't see it Adam there is no hidden messages or hints. If it wasn't for this cloudy brain of mine I would remember where it's hidden."

"Okay Kasey, firstly you posted these letters, then you had to post the stick. Where would you address it to so it either reaches the Fed building or someone you trust with your life?"

"There are many places I could have sent it, here to you, to your dad, or the commander, mum's place. I have no idea."

"To the salon?"

"To the salon." He stared at me for some time.

"That's the obvious place Kasey, you sent it to me at the salon, look for my name on the fliers." He started his search again. I made coffee and as I poured the water into the cups he yelled.

"Bingo."

I walked over placed the mugs on the table and sat beside him.

"Look here at the email address on this one. Adamwithana@salon.com.au" He beamed.

"It's at the salon Kase, my god if Trish thought it was junk she may have tossed it, even I would have done that."

"Not if it was marked attention Lieutenant Kasey with a k."

"But she would have passed it to me."

"Not if she didn't see it, Adam, maybe James or Marko did the mail that day. Maybe when you weren't there, where would they place it?"

"In the reception drawer Kasey, maybe they were busy that day and didn't remember it when all hell was breaking loose around them."

"I got to go look Adam, stay with Sammy."

"I'll keep my fingers crossed, and rug up." He threw his army overcoat on and a beanie then left, he looked so awesome.

And sex was on my mind again, It took him over half an hour to return.

The first thing he did was kiss me, then Sam who was having his sandwich at the table. He took his coat off the reached into the pocket. He held up a memory stick and said.

"Marko had it in his drawer, he had opened the envelope thinking it was a free gift and put it in his drawer and forgot about it."

"Makes sense, you are so lucky he didn't toss it."

"He was going to put music on it when he got around to it." He grinned.

"Music is nice too." I grinned back.

"So are cartoons." My son said.

He plugged it into the laptop and opened it. Names there was a list of names and addresses, about twenty or so.

"Is it what you wanted?"

"Yes. God that guy of yours did an awesome job getting this, it's copied from a government worker's computer." I know he meant himself.

"Is there any noted personnel?"

"I only recognise one name, Admiral Hathaway. He's in Canberra heading up the coast guard."

"Makes sense, he's being paid to reroute ships coming here."

"I have to ring the commander and dad." He did that job and I made more coffee and warm milk for Sam, who had decided his cartoons were the best for him today.

"You will never believe this Adam, but three government officials are on this list, one military general two senators, Australian ones." I stared at him and started laughing because he was so happy.

"Got the buggers." He grinned back.

Keith arrived and Kasey poured a scotch for us, dad arrived three minutes later. A half-hour later we had six top brass Military and Naval officials sitting at our table nutting out how the arrests will be conducted. The general wasn't hard to do and the senators will kick up a storm, but the federal police have more clout. My dad didn't care, none of his trusted staff were on Kasey's list, and the Indonesian names will be passed to their military officials to deal with. Copies were sent out to the relevant departments, and once again, Kasey was in his element. He bashed the keys to his new computer constantly, he was following the money trail I think.

This went on for four hours and eventually, Trish and Evans arrived with Eva and Wilson. They were warned that anything they hear is top secret and not to be repeated.

"How did Gloria go today Trish?"

"Really good Adam, she did your clients as well as the walk-ins, it's okay she's very professional, but I still think there's something about her I should know."

"She's trans Trish."

"What, no way is she a bloke." Eva started laughing, I think she had already guessed.

"I think she is, and you're sounding more like Evans every day."

"Eh? Sorry, Adam you just surprised me that's all."

"Well she is, but please keep it top secret, even I am not suppose to know, give her this Trish, Eva, she's trying hard to fit in."

"I know, but I have to say she's good at it." Eva laughed again.

It all got too much for me, my house was like a military recruiting station by the time I said my goodnights and went to bed, dad and the commander had set up a command station at my table. I was bushed and needed some sleep, I did feel Kasey get in with me, he kissed my neck then pulled me into him.

"All over?" I moaned.

"All over Adam with an a, goodnight."

No Sam tonight, and at two in the morning, I was moved around so Kasey could settle between my legs, it started with a small moan and ended with a fantastic orgasm, for him.

In the morning he was up and at the computer I threw the sheets in the wash and went to see how Sam was. He was almost awake and feeling much better, his day of rest had done him some good. I dug out the insurance papers for the car and made coffee after giving my man a big morning kiss.

He was still chasing something on his computer and seemed very excited.

"I have found the transactions and now I'm summarising for the general, Luca will get involved also he will be able to arrest the car thief when I get to it."

"How would you even know where to look?"

"The senator transferred five grand to his account I am just waiting for the bank account name and address request."

"You can do all that?"

"Very easily Adam, everything I need to know is on here."

"I have to ring the insurance company about the car sometime this morning."

"All done yesterday Adam, a new one will be delivered sometime today or tomorrow."

"What do you want for breakfast?" Cant I do anything?

"You know what I want Adam, but here is our beautiful son maybe later on?"

"Later on then." I kissed Sam and Kasey did the same then he propped himself in front of you know what. He got some warm milk and I started some toast for him.

Kasey shut down his computer and leaned back, breathing heavily he relaxed his body.

"All done?"

"Yes Adam, case closed."

"What will happen to them?"

"Not as much as you would think, the general and admiral will be court marshalled and dishonourably discharged. The senators will be forced to quit politics, as you know nothing ever happens to them." He giggled.

"What did you do?"

"Transferred a lot of money from their accounts to a veterans housing charity, no footprints left by me. But they can claim it on their tax." He continue laughing it was so nice to hear.

He took my hand and we headed for the bedroom.

"So everything worked out good Adam, but I'm glad to be back here with you and Sam."

"Kasey we are so proud of you, and what you have done, I would be even prouder if you would just finish your law degree, please don't go away again."

"I will try not to." He kissed me.

"No Kasey, please don't you ever go away again. I mean it this time. You don't need to impress anyone, and as I said we both are so proud of you."

He blushed I think the jig is up.

"Your dad?"

"And mum." I grabbed a handful of floppy dick and started bringing it back to life again.

"You are so good for me Adam."

"I know."

Food, what am I going to make for dinner, I was musing that problem when both Trish and Eva knocked on the door. One had lasagna the other a casserole.

"Do you have any garlic bread, Adam?"

"Heaps thanks, Trish."

"Good pop these into the oven and never say I don't feed you."

"Or me," Eva said.

Evans and Wilson arrived with their beers and I looked at Trish and said.

"Do we have enough?" She punched my arm, yes there was plenty of food to go around.

We talked and laughed and Kase told the guys what he had done and I turned the tv over to the news much to Sam's disgust. His papa grabbed him and the tickling started. To distract him further Eva got the hairspray out and did his hair.

Two senators quit parliament today and a general was arrested for unknown reasons, nothing from the navy. They didn't elaborate but did say after it was announced that a child trafficking cartel had been disbanded throughout Indonesia and Malaysia, hundreds of children were saved from certain slavery.

We all did High fives with Kasey, and dad and Keith arrived with Tim.

"I'll order some more shall I, Tim get Keith a scotch?" I laughed.
