Chapter 28

I had done a lot of thinking today and that's the only solution I can come up with and that's to move out of the apartment. I thought we could move closer to mums place then Sam will have Billy to play with, but both Kasey and I will have to travel to work and that's not ideal, but it has to be done.

We ordered up big at McDonald's, something else Sam had to experience, his new mates had to leave to get back to school and that left us again with just the two boys.

"Why are you so deep in thought baby?" Kasey never misses a trick.

"Just some things I have to think about Kase, I will run it past you later on if you don't mind." Sam had screamed, why is it when kids get excited they always scream.

He had just found his little toy in his surprise box and was showing everyone then Bill screamed he got one too. Kasey showed Sam how to eat a hamburger with his hands and he munched away on his delicious cheeseburger, chocolate milkshakes were for drinks and I thought I won't introduce him to the hot chocolate fudge ice cream just yet, that decision was made just before Kasey disappeared and bought the kids one each. It was a very successful day and the eyelids were starting to droop a little, but there was also a playpen they had to try before we were flown back home.

They were dead to the world as soon as the TV was turned on, I threw the blanket over both of them and kissed them sweet dreams.

Dad left to go to do his job and Kasey made coffee and put out the rest of the cake from last night. He opened his computer I sat with mum and we went over the events of today.

"Mum are there any properties for sale around your area?"

"Why son?"

"Just thinking we might have a look at a few that's all."

Kasey cleared his throat and turned his laptop around.

"Adam, there are three pre-school kindergartens within a three miles radius of here, in fact, the closest one is almost behind the salon."

"What?"

"You might want to accompany me there tomorrow morning to check it out."

"I thought there wasn't anything in the city."

"Did you look?"

"No." I didn't either I just assumed there would be nothing in our area.

"Urrumph." Kasey made a noise and mum started laughing then said.

"If anything your father and I should be looking at moving here, Billy will fit in anywhere.

"What about his friend Dennis?"

"Oh I forgot about him, I had them pegged to be best friends for life."

I started laughing but did think Billy would be the perfect best friend for Sam.

In the meantime Kasey took his phone out and rang someone I think he was getting more details on the Kindy.

"Will you wait for dad to go home or will you stay another night?"

"I will wait for dad, son but we have to get home its art class tomorrow and he will be pissed off he missed it."

"Ok I can organize an early dinner then."

"How is he coming along with his numbers Adam?"

"I don't know mum, I think Kase has been teaching him all that, I know he's doing the three bags full rhyme." She raised her eyebrows.

"I see." Just the Kasey came in and said.

"We have an appointment in the morning at eleven, I'll pick you up on the way through."

See how easy he does that, I worried myself sick and he just makes one phone call.

I held my tongue and decided to go watch some cartoons on the sofa, mum joined me and within minutes she had joined the kids in the land of nod. I looked over at Kasey and he was well and truly into his reading. I was lost for something to do so I went and stripped mum's bed and put the washer on.

After the goodbyes were said and Sam was readied for bed, I read a few chapters to him and he crashed with a smile on his face, I sat for a while marveling in his simple beauty then I went to see if Kasey would be up for a root. He was nowhere to be seen but when I looked out to the balcony, there he was in those see-through undies he was bent over the balustrade with his legs apart, what an awesome sight, and so was the following root. He was exhausted when we finished and I made him shut everything off and come to bed, I had a special night planned just for him.

"His numbers, mum mentioned them."

"He knows up to ten but sometimes he forgets the running order the guys in the camp taught him some. The kindy lady said they focus on numbers and letters they sort of have a small class for half an hour then the kids play and interact. Adam, can you stick your finger in further?" I obliged him I think he is getting ready for round two.

I was up early the next day and let the boys sleep in a bit, as I sat at the table I took the opportunity to read what Kasey had gathered on Sam's history. It was heartbreaking to read but I had to do it, the one thing that stood out is he didn't know anything different as he had only done the one job as far as he remembered, and that was to gather water from a stream. He didn't know who his mother was or his father but one of the guys did look after him at night he slept in his tent he thought he may have been his father. So much sadness to put up with in his short life and yes his write up covered him going to a safe place when the abuse started happening sometimes in the middle of the night, where he nearly froze to death. He couldn't help the prisoners all he could do was give them water and some food he scrounged. I finished the three long pages and replaced them on the table then blew my nose and made another coffee, I have to shake this off before the boys come out.

I thought about other things to distract my brain and the one thing that popped up was Kasey's need to get into top-secret records, I knew it had something to do with Lloyd maybe Kase is going to help with the court case if it ever happens.

"Good morning baby." Kasey kissed my neck.

"More coffee?"

"Yes please." I grabbed his crotch and had a good morning feel.

"I didn't see Sam in bed he must have slept through."

"It was a big day for him." I got up and walked to Sam's room he was playing with his toys on the bed.

"Good morning son." I smiled.

"Good morning poppa are you up?"

"I am, what would you like for breakfast?"

"I don't know yet."

"Ok when you do let me know." He followed me out and ran over to Kasey who picked him up and kissed him then it was TV time. Kase and I fooled around in the kitchen he asked me why I was up so early I told him I had some stuff to read. I assured him I wouldn't let it get to me and as far as I'm concerned it's in the past and I don't want to bring it into Sam's future.

"Are you worried about him going to kindergarten?"

"No, he needs other kids around him I can see that now, I guess he's used to it, are we going to tell them his history?"

"Yes Adam, I think we should just in case they have a drama like the other day." He moved over to the table and folded the papers then he motioned me to follow him and sit on the sofa. "Did you have a good time yesterday son?"

"Yes daddy, it was good."

"Well we want you to do something special for us today if you don't mind."

"I don't mind daddy." His name for Kasey has changed and we didn't mind one bit.

"Well you know the kids you met yesterday?" "Yes."

"We would like you to go to their school for a few hours every day, just to learn a bit and to have loads of plays." His mouth turned up but that could be the cartoon his eyes never left the screen.

"Are you coming daddy?"

"For a few minutes, poppa and I will come with you then we have to go to work and will pick you up when the time is right."

"I never been to school daddy."

"You will love it, there's plenty of kids you can play with just like the other day and you will meet some more friends to hang out with."

"Okay."

"Now what would you like for breakfast son?"

"I don't know yet." Okay he doesn't know so we will let him ponder it for a while, we went and sat at the table I ate the toast Kasey had made then he put some more on for our boy.

"There's some small tins of spaghetti in the cupboard he might like that."

After breakfast then shower's I went to find him some shorts and top he might like to spend an hour at the kindy today, we decided to wait and see how it all goes when the other kids meet him. Kasey had to go into work he had something important to handle, I took Sam with me because he will be occupied and someone is coming in today I want him to meet. Kasey walked us up to the salon he didn't kiss me but he kissed Sam and told us he will be back around eleven. I opened the door and when I stepped inside the smells were wonderful.

"Wow!" My son yelled.

"Wow what baby?"

"Smells poppa lots and lots of smells wonderful." He started running around his arms swinging in the air.

I smiled inside because now I know it's not just me that gets a kick out of it.

I put the fresh buns into the keeper turned the urn on and chased my son a bit. Eva came in followed by Tim who immediately held Sam's attention talking to him about the big dog cartoons. I made another coffee and told Eva I had offered Janice and Trev the Melbourne position. She said she knew but agreed with me it was a good choice, she also told me Wilson has blown everyone away with his design for the government building he was working on, she said he will get a big bonus under the table when it's finished.

"Good morning my precious one, you're so beautiful, come to Nona." I heard behind me, I turned and she was about to pick Sam up but he stepped back.

"It's okay Sammy that's your Nona Zena she's wanting to meet you."

"Oh Mr. Adam he's beautiful I want to eat him all up." She handed me her biscuit barrel and then she went to sit at reception, she patted the sofa and coaxed Sam to come and sit with her. I suppose she found something to talk to him about because I could see him nodding his head. Next were James and Marko they were giggling as the almost fell in the door.

Marko said good morning then spotted Zena.

"I won't be a minute Nona just let me set up."

"Take your time my boy." I guess I have lost my favorite customer to my favorite hair designer today.

No smart assed comments coming from Madam either I guess she's toned it down because of Sam. "Sorry Mr. Adam I wasn't expecting you to be in now you have something more important to do." She nodded at Sam.

"I will always have time for you Zena, it's all good." I grinned more at Sam because he was munching on one of her biscuits.

I potted around and got ready for my first customer and Sam came to sit with me because Marko was ready for Zena, but she did whisper in my ear as she passed.

"Was it a long birth?" I laughed because she couldn't help herself.

"My god Susan what's happened to you, let's get this mess sorted out."

"Sorry Adam I have been ignoring myself lately, we bought a house and my husband and I were renovating so I thought we had better get that out of the way before I restart working on myself."

"Is it finished?"

"Yes at long last, now I'm ready to join the Stepford wives club in the suburbs."

"You're not going to compromise your look are you?"

"No Adam, that's mine and if the neighbors don't like it they can go to hell." She giggled.

"Okay let's give it a wash." I moved her to the trough and Sam came to help me.

"Whose this Adam?"

"My brand new son Susan, he's beautiful."

"Your son, but I thought you were gay."

"I am, Kasey and I adopted him he's from Iraq."

"He is lovely." She then rattled off some words and Sammy's eyes lit up because he could understand her.

"Your talk Arabic?" I was so amazed by this gorgeous woman. "A little Adam, my friend at school taught me a lot of words and I guess they stuck I just welcomed him to our country and said how handsome he was."

Sam rattled off a load of words and she told him to slow down a bit, she said she understood him but only certain words but she got the gist of what he's saying.

"He's going to be enrolled in kindy today," I said.

"Great that will boost his confidence a bit." She then said something else and Sam nearly fell over laughing. He got bored after ten minutes then he went to find that lovely lady who gave him a biscuit.

"He's part of a big rescue operation Kasey was involved in, the youngest kid to be rescued so Kase thought we may as well adopt him if he could. The papers will be through soon we love him to death."

"He's beautiful Adam, and I know he's going to have a wonderful life with you both."

I took her to my station and started working my magic by the time I had got her back into order Kasey was waiting for us at reception. Zena had walked past again and she looked stunning Marko had changed her style yet again.

"Are you ready?"

"Yes I just have to go get Sam he's in the kitchen I think."

"Private Sam Casey front and center," Kase yelled, thank god there were only a few customers in the salon. He ran out screaming.

"Daddy!"

Kase saluted him he did the same.

"At ease private." Then he picked him up and we left to go see the Kindergarten. It was a six-minute walk and again Sam's eyes were everywhere. I was blown away by the security at the center and we had to show our licenses to the lady at reception. Sam could hear the kids yelling and playing but he couldn't get through the big closed security doors. It was so good to see him even try to get to where the other kids were. I think he's going to love it here. The manageress was lovely and she is a customer of ours but she sees Eva, we filled out paperwork and there was mention of the government supplement which helps with fees. Kasey handed over his history and said.

"For your eyes only, please don't make this public, Military business." She understood and started reading it, after a minute she put it down and asked Sam if he wanted to meet the kids and he was overexcited to do just that. We didn't see him for the next half hour he got lost amongst at least twelve other little kids but I did hear his laugh a few times. Sandra the headmistress came out, her eyes were red and she passed Kasey his paperwork back.

"Well done boys." She tried to smile.

"I don't think we have to worry about him Kase, he's already making friends."

"He's going to rock this I think Adam." And he will too. We took a learning chart so we could see where he has to be each month for the next year. Kasey and I talked at length about how we were going to handle it and for now, we will give him an hour a night instructing him on numbers and letters maybe even writing.

His paperwork from the government arrived the next day I hadn't asked Kasey if he ever found out what date Sam had been born, I thought it impossible to do but there it was the thirty first of March in big numbers on his passport.

"How did you get his birthdate, Kasey?"

"I didn't, that was the day I found him I thought it appropriate." He grinned.

"Yes, I agree."

We both walked up to the kindy to pick him up the next day and we weren't prepared for the scene he made when he had to come home. He was in the middle of a game when the home bell went and he wasn't happy because he was winning. He had calmed down by the time we got there but Debbie the manager said it was an everyday occurrence and she was as pleased as punch it was Sam this time, it showed her he was more than willing to get involved and he wasn't all that shy either, although we had thought he was.

We played games with him as we walked home that seemed to distract him. Kasey had been in front of his computer all day he has caught up but he wants to study ahead just because he likes to be prepared. When we got in Sam headed for the TV and Kase and I made a coffee while I decided what to have for dinner, we have taken to feeding Sam earlier than us because his schedule is different than ours, he will have chicken wings tonight in a peanut sauce.

I cleaned out his school bag and was surprised he had eaten all his lunch at least I hope he has and isn't giving it away. He was placed at the table with us to eat tonight but we left the TV on then as he ate Kasey started teaching him more numbers, he had to count his wings his cutlery his fingers and toes, it was a game to him but a very important one. We then showed him how to spell his name with some alphabet blocks, his food vanished into his tummy then while they were still at it I ran a bath for him.

Twice a day I get Kasey to myself, the early mornings and after Sam goes to bed and I cherish those moments, mainly we talk about his future but it all gets put to the side when he has to only kiss me once, then we are lost in our lovemaking for ages. Blue suits him and when he dresses for work I know he's going into his office, blue slacks that showcase his buns a blue shirt that always seems too small for him because his torso uses every inch of the fabric and a blue cap tilted to the side, he doesn't know how hot he looks in this uniform, but I do.

He's going into work this morning I guess he has something to do there and when I asked why he just grunted and said he had to check some records. That is my cue to say nothing because its usually top-secret stuff he is working on for the Military, he can't do that here. Sam was running around looking for his school stuff which I had packed in his backpack last night.

"It's all in here baby you can check it if you want."

He ran over and dragged his pack onto the floor then started checking off the items inside it. When he was satisfied he was then ready for some TV and toast. Kasey shoved paperwork into his valise and smiled at me he looked like he wanted to ask me a question but sipped his coffee instead.

"So what did you want to ask me?" He knew I had caught his look.

"Nothing Adam, do you still set the cameras when we aren't here?"

"Of course I do you have seen me do it, what's this all about?"

"Nothing, I just thought now Sam's with us we should be more aware of our security."

I let it go because he doesn't ask those sort of questions without a valid reason, I have to trust him to tell us if we are in any danger. We will both walk Sam to kindy then Kase will walk me to work then we will go our separate ways. There was something strange I noticed when we left the building, Shannon was sitting in the café having breakfast on his own, it wasn't anything only I have never seen him in there before, a weird feeling came over me like he was encroaching in my space. I shook it off as being sensitive and silly the guy can eat anywhere he likes and the café does have good food.

We nearly didn't get a goodbye kiss from our son he was eager to start where he left off yesterday, that game he was playing was still on his mind.

I opened the salon door and the smell was ever welcoming, Kasey slipped in behind me and started kissing me goodbye for the day.

"Are you coming here for lunch?" "I don't know baby, I may be a little busy today."

"Why don't I bring it up to you then." "If you like, just get me a sandwich then and if I'm not here by twelve can you deliver?"

"That I would gladly do my Kasey with a k." I smiled at him he gave me one last kiss then left, my hand patted his bum and he giggled. I know he does that deliberately, orders a size too small for himself it's not for anyone else except him and me and a bit of my style has rubbed off on him also.

I looked at the appointments while my staff arrived all smiling and refreshed. Eva looked smashing and because she was all dressed up to the nines I knew she had an appointment elsewhere today.

"Are you taking time off today lovely?"

"Can't get anything by you can I Adam?"

"No."

"Wilson and I have an appointment with the reception center, we need to book the wedding in, if we can't get to use it on our chosen date we will have to have a rethink."

"Oh, I thought you would have it in the flat or on the roof."

"Ideally yes but not practical, I have a big family and Wilson has loads of mates so we need to cater for two hundred or so."

"Heres a suggestion honey, why don't you have it here?"

"Are you mad?"

"Perfect setting all you have to do is hire tables and chairs." I was trying to help but sometimes I can't quite get that special Trish organizational skill going. "Not on your life Adam, it's a reception room or nothing. Bloody hell if it was here it will feel like I'm at work not at my wedding."

"Have you got the dress sorted yet?"

"Yes, Cody Mitchell original. You can look at it next time your over at the other salon Cody is storing it there for me." She smiled.

"Thank you I will be indeed looking at it, but I know it will be something special if he's had it made for you." She smiled and said.

"It is."

"By the way, this is not public knowledge but Wilson wants Kasey as his best man so we have to get a dinner suit for him organized."

"He's not using his brothers?"

"Yes they are groomsmen and I think Sam and Billy are going to be ring bearers but he's organizing all of that. Don't say anything to Kasey yet its early stages." She smiled and she was also getting excited.

"Mitchell, get in here." I heard Lucy loosebox scream up the street, oh god we are in for it now.

"Good morning Adam, Eva I need my roots done and Mitchell needs a man cut. Mitchell, I said get in here." She again shouted out the door.

Mitchell ran in, he's grown a few inches and is starting to look like a grown-up stud in his prime, I chuckled to myself and wondered if his cherry has been picked yet.

"Hi, Mitchell how's it going?"

"Good uncle Adam, can I have one of your special haircuts. Mummy daddy will have the same as she or he always has."

"Mitchell, behave yourself or I'll cut off your dick." Lucy once again screamed she does that a lot, I think it's because she thinks she's on stage all the time.

I could see Anne shaking her head from side to side I guess he will want her to do his hair today, she has got the biggest boobs in the place, she's working with us today because Evas having the afternoon off.

"Okay Mitch I will get Aunty Anne to do your hair today is that okay?"

"I wouldn't have it any other way, she's got the look I like and she's so easy on the eye." He was almost frothing at the mouth, Anne started giggling and I must admit that kid is a real charmer and an absolute spunk.

"So how's he going with school?"

"He wants to leave and get a job, I'm chasing my ass trying to figure out how to keep him there."

"Does he know what he wants to do yet?"

"Probably stripping." She burst out laughing.

"He will certainly be very good at that, why don't you enroll him in a drama class or modeling agency. I hate to tell you, Lucy, he's turning out gorgeous."

"I know it takes all my time to fend off the queens who want a piece of him, I have already caught him deliberately flashing himself to the girls on stage."

"He's still getting into the club then."

"Yes I have told security not to let him in but they don't listen. Rumour has it he has already received a blow job from an unknown good looking girl that comes in with her workmates. I can't stop it Adam I just have to try to limit the fallout."

"How old is he now?"

"He's fifteen next week so that's it, he will almost be able to do what he wants and I'm terrified he will try and leave home."

"I wish I knew a nice young girl to introduce him to and he's not going to leave you he's got it too good there." I smiled.

"Don't worry pet that's my job it's going to break my heart when he leaves home but my biggest worry is he will get some filly pregnant and ruin his best years."

I felt sorry for Lucy she did try hard with Mitchell, I don't think he would want to become a hairdresser but maybe modeling I think he would be great at that and no not porn modeling either.

"If you like I can try and put in a word with Cody Mitchell, he's got that factory outlet at the other salon you know, and he has a good eye for catalog models too, maybe he can help."

"I know Cody, I am doing some work with him at the footy club they want to put my show in over winter. I will talk to him, get some ideas maybe." Poor Lucy she was getting down and that's not her at all. I was nearly finished with her hair and Mitchell was also done he looked gorgeous Anne had done his hair beautifully, he was still staring at her boobs, then I saw it.

I saw Anne blush and whisper in his ear while passing a piece of paper to him, I wondered if Anne was the girl Lucy talked about but I would never confront her on the subject, if that's how she gets her kicks then so be it who am I to talk, after all I did the nasty in the club toilets for ages before I met Kasey and the more I looked at Mitchell the more adult he seemed.

They left looking more like the best of friends I think Mitchell was going to shout Lucy a coffee across the road, Kasey rang he will come here for lunch after all so I had better do something about lunch, he will be here soon. I got Marko to take the lunch orders and ordered some fish and chips for us and it was perfect timing because Kase arrived just as Marko got back. We sat and ate he wasn't being very talkative today but we did discuss what we were going to do with Sam after kindy, he would take him home and I would come back here. Over the past few months I have more and more ignored my job and concentrated on my personal life so at times I feel guilty I leave my wonderful staff to fend for themselves.

After he left I was cleaning up when I heard.

"Adam, can you do a wash and cut for a walk-in?"

"Sure, get Marko to wash her hair please." That's his real job not pinching my favorite clients, I chuckled to myself. The customer looked like she hadn't been to the hairdressers for a long time, she also looked like she had the world sitting on her shoulders but she was pleasant and introduced herself as Helen. She was offered coffee which she accepted and Marko even bought out a few of Zena's biscuits with the drink.

"Now Helen, what do we need to do to make you feel better again?" I could tell she had been under a lot of strain it showed in her face and her manner, she was hunched over like an old lady, she sort of answered me with a small laugh.

"Nothing will put me together again Adam, but I am trying to take baby steps at the moment and I desperately needed to talk to you in private, coming here is all I could think of to do." I stopped fussing with her hair and pulled over a mobile seat and sat looking at her.

"Do I know you, Helen?"

"No Adam but you know my ex-husband, I believe you only know him as Lloyd." My heart stopped and I had to fight the tears back, this woman has been to hell and back and it showed I felt so sorry for her and the kids and now I have to face her for real. I gasped grabbing my breath and trying not to cry but my eyes watered.

"How can I help you Helen, how can I say how sorry I am all this happened to you and your family, how?"

"You can't Adam, it's me that has to apologize for my husband's dreadful behavior and I wanted to tell you I didn't know. I just didn't know he was as bad as he was. If I had of known back then I would have warned you or Kasey. Please don't blame his family for his disorder because we certainly didn't cause it."

"No no no you don't get to say that Helen, no one is to blame and no one isn't blaming you or your boys, for god's sake I only have to take a look at you to see how this has affected you. No, I apologize for not getting in touch with you when I wanted to, but the Military lawyers put a stop to it. I wanted to see if I could help you and the boys I got a bit of help out of the disaster but what did you get?"

"Nothing Adam absolutely nothing." Her head dropped then the crying started on both sides. I steered her to the tea room and closed the door, then I made more coffee and sat holding her hands while the sadness passed.

"Helen, how can I help you and the boys?"

"I didn't come here for help Adam, I came here because I have found something and I want it out of the house, and from what I hear I can trust you to deal with it as you please, but please know Lloyd will know who gave it to you."

She rummaged around in her handbag and pulled out a small notebook looked at it then passed it to me.

"It's my husband's diary I think, well a sort of diary, some I understand some I didn't know about please don't tell anyone I gave it to you."

"Of course I promise, what's in it?"

"Read it when I'm gone, I don't want to know about it anymore. I am being threatened with foreclosure on the house in four weeks, I have more pressing things to organize and I can't worry about all this mess anymore. I am so grateful you and Kasey and your staff weren't harmed I could never live with myself if they were."

"Everyone survived and they are all well thank god, but we need to help you why are you being evicted?"

"The payments on the house were way in errors long before all this happened, another thing I didn't know about, so the bank is foreclosing and will be selling the house if I don't come up with the money before the end of the month."

"Okay first things first, which bank I know people that might be able to help?"

"That's not why I came here Adam."

"I know that but if I can help I will, I have a lawyer who knows everything he maybe will be able to stave off the bank until we figure something out."

"Oh god that would be a load off my shoulders I'm only getting a pension now, when the military cut Lloyd off they automatically cut us off too, so I don't have a job or the funds to pay the bank. Three boys are like eating machines and they must come first."

"Yes I agree they come first after you, so let me help a little let's see how far we can take this especially with the military."

She left an hour later looking a lot better I had also done her make-up and she did look ten years younger. We promised we would keep in touch and one day I will drive to her place and have a coffee with her, that way I can find out if she needs anything else. My job now was to call Mr. Walsham the lawyer, talk to Kasey then go pick my boy up. I placed the notebook into my travel bag then went to find two of my favourite people.
