John's Journey Forward

Previously

“What do we need to take with us?” Sandy asked. “Laptops or Surface Pro?”

“I hate to say this, but I suggest you take your laptops,” Chris answered. “I know they are heavy, but you will more than likely need them for the exercises. And, plan on business casual dress for the workshop. Pack some casual clothes, too! We are going to explore the city a little in our free time. Comfortable shoes, too.”

“Noel is going to be so fucking jealous,” I said almost to myself.

“Buy him something nice while you are away,” Chris said. “I’ve found returning home from a business trip requires you to buy your significant other something really nice. There is a Microsoft Store and an Apple Store on North Michigan Avenue not far from where we are staying for those with technically inclined significant others. Tiffany’s and Nordstrom’s are also nearby.”

“Now if I could find something to give my parents when I tell them I am a practicing homosexual and my boyfriend, Jorge Fernandez, and I are shacking up together,” George lamented.

“When is this happening, George?” Chris asked.

“Saturday evening,” George said. “At my brother’s condo in the Fenway. If you hear screams emanating from near Fenway Park, it will not be fans cheering on the Red Sox. It will be my parents wailing in agony when they find out they have a gay son!”

“Jorge will know what to do, George,” I said. “He and Noel went through the trauma with their mother. It was not pretty.”

“What’s the worst they can do, George?” Ralph asked.

“Not a lot at this point,” George said. “They’ve already paid for my college education and turned over control of my trust fund my grandparents set up. At least, I will still have my brother and Jorge. I may be minus my balls, but I will have my brother and Jorge to lean on!”

“Okay, boys!” Chris said. “Back to work!”

“Yes, boss!” Sandy said as we followed him out of the conference room to our workplace.

Chapter 14: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

We met George and Jorge at Flour on Sunday morning after George let his parents know about being gay.

“You are both still in one piece,” I said as George and Jorge took their seats at our table. “No broken bones or other obvious injuries to report?”

“We are still in one piece,” George somberly said as he started looking at the menu. “My brother smartly put away any item worth money or that could be broken. Other than cheese balls, the only thing left that could be used as weapons were magazines and some crackers. It is a good thing my parents are ardent gun control advocates. Otherwise, I would probably be in the morgue.”

“George’s mother has a good set of lungs on her,” Jorge added. “She made our mother seem calm, Noel.”

“I didn’t know my mother knew some of the words she used,” George continued. “Shit! I didn’t even know some of them.”

“His father seemed calm, though,” Jorge explained.

“When my father is calm, it means only one thing,” George added. “The quiet will be interrupted with massive disruption of a peaceful life in the near future. He is, in other words, plotting his strategy. It’s not over until the fat guy sings.”

“Isn’t it fat lady?” I asked.

“Not in this case,” George replied. “I’m doomed.”

“It can’t be that bad, George,” Noel said. “Your condo is in your name. You have a good job. Your brother is still talking to you. You have Jorge. You have very loyal friends and coworkers. I think Jorge and I have learned you can live your life without all of your family involved in your daily life.”

“Spoken like a true optimist,” I said as I gave Noel a peck on the cheek.

“How did your brother handle the events?” I asked.

“He was calm,” George replied. “He stated his case well. I am, he said, not the subversive deviant my mother pronounced me. He also gave some impressive statistics about gay people doing great things. Some, he said as he singled out Barney Frank, have been in the limelight for years. Of course, my mother called Barney a pathetic psychopath. He also made it very clear he will not tolerate an arranged marriage for himself even though he is gay.”

“So, what happens now?” Noel asked.

“We wait,” George explained. “We wait until they kidnap me and put me in a re-education program.”

“Your parents wouldn’t do that, would they?” I asked.

“Yes,” George continued. “However, at the advice of my brother, I am filing a restraining order against my parents and their idiot, homophobic friends. Fortunately, I live in a building with a doorman. Now, can we change the subject to something that does not involve me in a battle to remain sane in an insane world?”

“Do you celebrate Muslim holidays?” Jorge asked. “I never thought to ask.”

“Not unless I am forced to do so,” George answered. “I personally feel Christmas is the most fun holiday of the year. I also like New Year’s Eve. Why?”

“I thought we might need to expand our knowledge of Muslim holidays,” Jorge replied. “But, I sense it will not be necessary.”

“It won’t be a requirement of mine,” George continued. “Now, can we please change the subject? Jorge, tell the guys about the interview you had with the Cambridge library system.”

“I’m excited,” Jorge began his explanation. “I met with HR last week in a preliminary interview. I am meeting with the main branch chief librarian and the executive director of the library next Tuesday. They are looking for a staff assistant who will report to the main branch chief librarian. And, the good news it pays a lot more money than my job at the bookstore. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

“Congratulations, Jorge,” Noel said. “We will need to celebrate if this comes through. Our agency does some pro-bono work for the Cambridge Library. Do you want me to speak with Gavin?”

“Every little bit helps…,” Jorge continued. “So they say, at least. We can’t tell our mother, Noel! I do not want her to be snooping into my professional life.”

“My lips are sealed, Jorge,” Noel agreed. “I haven’t spoken to her since our little revelation several months ago. I intend to keep it that way unless our mother has an epiphany and comes to her senses regarding her religion and her family.”

“Not going to happen, Noel,” Jorge responded.

“How is life living as a couple going?” I asked. “I haven’t heard of any big blowouts, so I assume it is all good.”

“One of the best things to happen to me was Jorge moving in with me,” George replied. “He has become my rock. It seems like we’ve lived together forever… even though it has only been a month.”

“George can’t keep his hands off my body, though,” Jorge explained.

George looked at Jorge with squinty eyes, “I didn’t think you minded my hands on your body!”

“I don’t,” Jorge added with a smirk. “Speaking of hands… I think we need to go home and fix something to eat.”

“Do I have to keep my hands off your body?” George asked.

“Nope,” Jorge answered with a smile.

“I’m on it,” George replied as he and Jorge quickly gathered their belongings to leave.

“See you guys,” Jorge added as they left Starbucks.

“Maybe we should go, too,” Noel decided. “We’ve had enough coffee for one evening.”

“What are you going to do while I am gone next week, Noel?” I asked while we walked home.

“Probably do a lot of work,” Noel responded. “I have a couple of projects, and I will spend some time getting into them. Jorge and I are planning on time together. We are going to have a bonding experience. But, I will miss the shit out of you. Do you realize we haven’t been apart since we started living together?”

“Yup,” I said. “I want so much to shove you in my suitcase and take you with me. However, I know it is not possible.”

“You’ll be busy with the workshop, I am certain,” Noel replied.

“You know I will have a difficult time falling asleep without you,” I added.

“You’ll have George to keep you company,” Noel replied. “Jorge said he snores just like I do. You will find it comforting.”

“I hope I don’t wake up the middle of the night and rape him,” I said. “It would be embarrassing.”

“He’s family now, John!” Noel explained. His eyes were squinty so I knew I had to keep my hands to myself.

“Don’t worry, Noel,” I reassured him. “I would know right away it wasn’t your body. George is hairier than you.”

“I am putting a hidden camera in your luggage just to make sure,” Noel said. He was smiling at least.

“Do you remember what George said about Jorge when he talked about living with each other?” I asked.

“Yup,” Noel replied. “He called Jorge his rock.”

“I consider you my rock also,” I explained. “You are the grounding force in my life. You make my life complete. I would probably still be working at UPS in the warehouse if you hadn’t come along. You give me the confidence to function in a corporate environment. I’m not certain I would have the courage to take the job with Chris if it hadn’t been for you.”

“So, does this mean you are taking me to bed so you can ravage my body?” Noel asked as he slithered closer to me on the sofa.

“Nope,” I replied. “I would never want to take advantage of you and make you into my sex toy.”

“John,” Noel whispered into my ear. “If you don’t make me into your sex toy in exactly five seconds, I am going to pout for the rest of my life.”

Noel also began to tweak my nipple through the material in my tee shirt.

“Oh! Fuck!” I whimper.

Noel had my shirt off in seconds and was on his knees on the floor in front of the sofa and he was unbuttoning my jeans. He was on a mission.

When my hard dick popped out of my jeans, it only took Noel an extremely short time before he had shoved my hard dick into his mouth.

“Ahhh…” I moaned as Noel deep-throated my dick. “Oh! Fuck!”

Noel pulled his head off my dick long enough to let me know what he wanted next. “I thought you’d never ask.”

“Ask what…?” I hissed.

“Fuck me, please, John,” Noel pleaded. “I need you to fuck me. And, I need you to fuck me now.”

------

I met Noel at Starbucks after work. It was Friday night. Noel and I wanted a quiet weekend alone before I left with my work group for our trip to Chicago. We were leaving on Monday morning.

“Hello, sweetie,” Noel said as he crept up on me at the table I secured in the window.

“Shit Noel,” I said as I recovered. “You need to stop scaring me. I could have had a heart attack or jumped through the plate glass window.”

“Sorry, John,” Noel said with a smile. “I didn’t mean to make you jump. Maybe you don’t need any more coffee.”

“I will always need coffee,” I said. “I was deep into studying for my class. I love going to school, but this one professor is almost out of touch with his expectations of his students.”

“You are attending MIT, after all,” Noel said with a smile. “You knew you would be challenged.”

“I know,” I replied. “But, theory is one thing. Reality is another. Now, what do you want to do this weekend?”

“Stay in bed with you,” Noel said with a smile.

“All weekend?” I asked.

“Maybe,” Noel replied. “I want you to myself. No one else. Just you and me. No Jorge. No George. Just you and me.”

“You’ve got it,” I replied.

“Hello, men!” Jorge and George said as they came into Starbucks.

“So much for being alone,” I whispered to Noel.

“They are only minor interruptions to our otherwise perfect weekend,” Noel whispered back. Then, he turned his attention to Jorge and George. “Shouldn’t you guys be somewhere so you could share some tender moments before the week-long separation?”

“We thought the two of you would already be in bed,” Jorge replied. “George and I have decided if we were as horny as you two, we would probably be homeless.”

“I’ll bet you are both celibate,” Noel countered. “It would possibly explain the smell of sex oozing off your bodies.”

“No wonder you’re in advertising, bro,” Jorge added. “I love the phrase ‘the smell of sex oozing off your bodies.’ Do Noel’s words make you horny, George?”

“Nope,” George replied. “I am sitting here smelling the smell of sex oozing off your body. Thus, you are making me horny.”

“Get a room, guys,” I said. “Noel and I are planning our weekend. We need to relax and enjoy each other before our long week of loneliness.”

“I’ll be around to keep you company, John,” George added. “Besides, we will be busy with our work.”

“Noel,” I said. “Should we break our vows of silence and invite these two shit heads to brunch on Sunday morning?”

“If we must,” Noel said with a smile. “I suspect until we offer them food, we will be pestered interminably.”

“There you go again, bro,” Jorge responded. “Using those big words again. When are you writing your book?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about Jorge,” Noel said.

“You know,” Jorge continued. “The one about you being a prostitute.”

“I’ve never been a prostitute, Jorge,” Noel said. “I think you have the two of us mixed up. Now, before I smash my coffee cup in Jorge’s crotch, do you think we should go, John?”

“Sure,” I replied with a smile. “So, how is 1 pm on Sunday for our family brunch?”

“Works for me,” George said. “After my announcement to the family about me being gay, I haven’t heard from my parents or my sister. It seems I am not part of the family. However, my brother is still trying to get my relatives in line with the thinking of 2015. He has his work cut out for him.”

“I am certain you will eventually work things out, George,” I said. “Give them time.”

“I have plenty of time,” George responded. “Right now, I am leaning toward the next century before there will be peace in the family.”

“You will always have us, George,” Jorge said as he gave his lover a peck on the cheek.

“See you guys at 1 pm on Sunday,” Noel confirmed as we left Starbucks.

“So, why don’t you write a book?” I asked Noel as we started on our way home.

“Someday,” Noel began. “I would like to try to write something in the fiction genre, but right now I have my hands full with work.”

"You will be a famous author someday,” I said as I grabbed Noel’s hand.

“Yea,” Noel began. “I will write the ultimate love story between two guys. They meet at an HIV support group and go on to eradicate poverty and sickness in the world through their undivided attention of one another’s bodies.”

“Sounds kinky,” I replied.

“Might be,” Noel added. “Want to see how kinky when we get home?”

“Yup,” I replied as I unlocked the door to the apartment.

“Want to get naked?” Noel asked.

I didn’t respond nor did I wait. I began pulling Noel’s clothes off his body. He began doing the same with mine. I led us to the bed and settled on my back. Noel landed on top and began kissing me.

“So…, lover boy…,” Noel hissed between kisses. “How kinky… do you… want to… be… tonight?”

“You can… stay right… where you are… and continue… what you are… doing… all night.”

---------

We had brunch ready for our guests exactly at 1 pm. Manuel and his wife were Kerry the first to arrive.

"How are the newlyweds going to stand being alone for a week?" Manuel asked.

“I will have work to keep my mind occupied,” Noel replied. “And, Jorge and I will both be alone for THE ENTIRE WEEK. So, we plan on acting as each other’s support group while our boyfriends are off enjoying themselves in Chicago.”

“Chicago is a great city,” Kerry explained. “I have been there on business trips. And, if you don’t do another thing, you need to Marshall Field’s flagship store on State Street. It is now a Macy’s, but the architecture and the store itself is a landmark to the good old days of retail.”

The doorbell rang. Jorge and George burst into the apartment without waiting for us to answer the door.

“Let’s get this party started,” George said enthusiastically.

“We’ve been skipping entire meals this weekend just so we could eat you out of house and home,” Jorge added. He was smiling broadly.

“You look like you just ate the canary and the cat,” Noel said to his brother. “Spill.”

“You are looking at the new staff assistant of the main Cambridge Library,” Jorge said proudly.

“Congratulations, bro,” Manuel said as he hugged Jorge. “When did this happened?”

“The Librarian called me yesterday afternoon,” Jorge replied. “He was going to wait until Monday, but he knew George would be out of town. He wanted me to have someone to celebrate with me.”

“Congratulations, Jorge!” Noel said as he grabbed his brother to hug him. “When do you start?”

“Two weeks from tomorrow,” Jorge replied. “I am really going to enjoy telling my manager at the book store he will no longer have me to kick around.”

“He won’t be a kept man anymore, either,” George said proudly.

“For the first time in my life, I am actually going to be making decent money,” Jorge added. “And, if I stay on the job for at least a year, the city will begin to help me pay off my student loans. So, I guess I am on my way to becoming a city bureaucrat.”

“We brought champagne to celebrate,” George explained as he handed me the bottles.

“Do you think three bottles will be enough for six people?” I asked.

“It’s a start,” Jorge said as I hugged him. Kerry was next.

---------------------------

“You know I hate flying, John,” George said to me as we settled into our seats.

“Business class will help sooth your nerves, George,” Chris said from across the aisle.

“The business class people will go down the same way as coach, boss,” George said. He was not smiling.

“This is what a good playlist on your phone helps you through, George,” I said.

“I’m good on the way up,” George explained. “It’s landing where I have a problem. So, if I am grabbing onto you for dear life, don’t be afraid.”

“I’ll be prepared,” I said.

“Have a drink or two before we get to Chicago,” Chris suggested. “You’ll be amazed at how a vodka or scotch on the rocks will help soothe the savage beast of fear.”

“So, George,” I said. I decided it was time to take George’s mind off flying. “You and Jorge must feel really good about Jorge’s new job.”

“Yes,” George replied. “I’m so happy for him. When Jorge heard the news from the head of the library, I thought he was going to explode. He needs a break like this. I’m thinking of taking him somewhere this weekend to celebrate. Maybe a trip to Maine or Vermont. But, I might just take him out to dinner and then to bed.”

“I’m certain he will like whatever you decide to do, George,” I replied. “I have also wanted to broch the subject of buying a condo somewhere with him. But, I think he needs a few paychecks under his belt before he will be comfortable with the idea of becoming homeowners. Have you and Noel ever thought of buying a condo?”

“We’ve talked about it,” I replied. “We’ve decided not to even think about it anymore until I am finished with my degree. This MIT thing is a lot of work.”

“But, your degree will be worth it, John,” George reassured me. “I’ve seen a lot of talent coming out of you in the past few months since you started to work with our group. You are very, very creative.”

“Thanks for the compliment, George,” I said. “I think you might be over hyping my abilities at this point.”

“Now, about that drink,” George began. “I think I will need a little help from some alcohol. Want to join me?”

“We are all joining you, George,” Chris announced. “Right, guys?”

We all gave our business class flight attendant our orders. When he returned with our drinks, he made a toast, “Here’s to fun and excitement in Chicago, men!”

“Here’s to success!” Chris added.

As we continued to enjoy our drinks, George and I continued our conversation until we were almost ready to land in Chicago.

“Thanks for taking my mind off flying, John,” George said. “I haven’t thought about my fear during the entire flight.”

“Maybe vodka is your cure for fear of flying,” I added.

“I am hoping,” George said as he smiled as we were instructed to turn off all electronics.

Once we were on the ground and we retrieved our bags, Chris led us out of the baggage claim area and into an awaiting limo for our ride to our hotel.

“Holy shit!” Sandy exclaimed as he saw the hotel for the first time. “This is amazing!”

As we were ushered into the lobby, we were looking around like the inexperienced tourists we were—all except Chris, of course.

After Chris had checked us in and retrieved the key cards, we headed up to our rooms. “There is no need to fight about your rooms,” Chris explained. “All of us have junior suites with two queen beds, sitting area, and lake views. We will meet downstairs in the lobby in one hour. I hired Gus, our limo driver from the airport, to take us on a quick tour of the city. Then, we are having dinner at Ambrosia in Lincoln Park. It is probably one of the best places in the city. Dress appropriately.”

“Holy shit!” George exclaimed as we walked into our room. “The fucking place is huge. And, the view of the lake is phenomenal!”

“And, we have two bathrooms!” I added.

“I will need to take pictures to show Jorge,” George effused.

“Or maybe not,” I whispered. “I’m not certain Noel or Jorge will be thrilled we are staying in this place while they are still working their butts off and living in our rented apartments.”

“We will need to devise a plan,” George said with a smile. “I can’t not tell him, though.”

“I know,” I replied. “Now, I need to find my blazer. I assume this place tonight will require a tie.”

“I believe Chris was warning us ties were not optional,” George replied as we both started hunting through our luggage.

“I wonder if Chris and Gavin travel like this all of the time,” I asked.

“Probably,” George said. “Do you think we can convince Jorge and Noel to travel like this?”

“In a flash,” I replied as I shed my slacks to change into ones matching my blazer. “As long as they don’t know how much it costs, they will be okay with it.”

“You look good in those Calvin Klein low-rise briefs, John” George said.

“Thanks,” I replied. “You look good in your Armani ones as well.”

-------------------------

“Chris,” George said excitedly as we boarded the plane for our return flight back to Chicago on Thursday afternoon. George looked a little nervous. “I received two e-mails right before we boarded the airplane. One was a reservation at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Boston for two nights to the tune of about $1,800. The other was for L'Espalier for two on Saturday night. Both are guaranteed on the company American Express Card. What’s happening?”

“Ah!” Chris began to explain. “I was going to explain when we were in the air. I heard you mention you wanted to celebrate Jorge’s new job. So, I took the liberty of booking two nights at the Mandarin Oriental on Friday and Saturday as well as Saturday night dinner at L’Espalier. You and Jorge will have a great time, I am certain.”

“But, I can’t afford an $1,800 hotel bill,” George continued. “I’m not certain I can afford to breath at L’Espalier.”

“It’s taken care of, George,” Chris explained. “Just make certain Jorge is free Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. You will have a great time.”

“I can’t let you pay for all of this,” George replied.

“You’re not letting me pay for it, George,” Chris said with a smile. “I already did. There is no turning back unless Jorge doesn’t have the time off.”

As we took our seats to await take off, George called Jorge. “Jorge! We will be back in Boston in about two hours.”

I could hear Jorge through George’s phone. “I have plans for you tonight, sweetie.”

“I can’t wait,” George responded. “Can you get Friday evening through Sunday afternoon off?”

“Sure,” Jorge replied. “I just need to switch with Jim. He owes me one. Why?”

“I will explain when I see you,” George replied. “Just know we will have a wonderful time celebrating your new job. I need to run. We are getting ready for takeoff.”

“I can’t wait to see you!” Jorge responded before the call was ended.

After we were airborne and the fasten seat belt light went off, Chris gathered around our team’s seats. He was in the aisle. “Guys,” Chris began. “I just want to let you all know I am very proud of you for your work this week. I see something in your eyes. Excitement. And, I believe we are going to have one hell of a good team for this work. I talked to Aron a few hours ago. We have two new clients as of this morning. Digital production and distribution of custom video. Starting on Monday morning, the five of you designers plus you, Bobby, will share in the profits of this business group. I believe we will all make significant money. However, please keep this among yourselves. I want this to be a quiet venture until we can prove our worth to the company. If the next 12 months continue as I believe they will, you will be our first partners of eSquare Website Design. Enjoy your weekend.”
