"His name was Alex." Jason said as he looked directly into JC's crystal blue eyes.
JC just stared at him blankly. `He couldn't have just said "his". Jason can't possibly be gay!' JC's thoughts wouldn't slow down long enough for him to reply. Meanwhile Jason was getting nervous.
"So, um, yeah. Well, I didn't know how you'd take that, but I should of assumed it'd be something like this. If you'd like I'll take you home now, or else I could just call a cab or something if that would make you uncomfortable." Jason said with great disappointment. `And what made you think this incredible guy would still talk to you if you were gay? Wait, incredible? Stop it! You just screwed up royal with Alex, don't let yourself get carried away again so soon.' Jason was getting close to tears as he thought about Alex and as he realized JC was starting to gain his speech back.
"Um, maybe that would be best."
"Oh, ok, yeah, let's just go back to the car."
"No, I really think maybe I should just grab a cab, I, um, don't wanna make you go out of your way."
"Yeah, if you think that'd be best."
JC got up and walked out the way they'd come in as Jason put his head in his hands and began sobbing uncontrollably. `Why am I so stupid! If I'd just said her.all I had to say was "her name was Alex". It wouldn't have been that big of a deal. It's been so long since I've had guy friends even, it didn't matter that JC isn't gay. Wait, what am I saying. Oh god.'
JC started to turn out of the park. What am I doing?' he suddenly thought to himself. That guy, that absolutely gorgeous and wonderful man just told me he was gay, well basically told me, and I just totally walked out on him. What's wrong with me?' JC was practically screaming at himself as he realized what he'd just done. He quickly started walking back to the table he'd just left.
JC walked up behind Jason so he didn't realize he was crying. As he approached he saw Jason's back slightly shaking.
"Jason?" JC called hesitantly.
`It can't be. Why'd he come back? Maybe.no, he probably just wants to get off a few insults when he realized he'd left without saying anything.' Jason lifted his head up but didn't turn around.
"Yes?" he replied coolly.
"Um, look, I'm sorry I left like that. It's just, I was shocked. I mean, I didn't think you could, I mean, well I didn't realize you were gay, and well I guess I just kinda didn't.well I just didn't handle it the right way. What I meant to do was this." JC said as he walked up behind Jason and put a hand on his shoulder. "So what happened between you and Alex?"
Jason turned around and looked up into JC's eyes. He saw kindness, and deep regret. "Thanks," he slowly whispered.
"No. Thank you, for forgiving me, I am stupid sometimes. Now I really did want to know, what happened to you and Alex?"
Back at the hotel:
"Hey, what took you guys so long?" Chris whined. "I'm getting really hungry."
"Oh, well, see, we kinda ate without you guys." Justin said as he flopped down in a chair. They were all in Joey's room, where Lance and Justin had found Chris.
"You WHAT? How could ya's do that to us?" Chris complained.
"Yeah ya specifically said `We'll drop back to pick ya'll up for lunch.' I remember that, cuz otherwise Chris and I woulda gone for food hours ago!" Joey chimed in.
By now Lance and Justin were laughing really hard at the two guys. They were acting like children, grabbing their stomachs and complaining that the guys never feed them and treat them like slaves.
"Well it wasn't entirely our fault. We met this guy at the courts and he played some hoops with us then treated us to lunch." Lance replied, trying to sustain his laughter.
"Oh, I see, so we weren't just forgotten for lunch, we were replaced by some guy off the street!" Chris said.
"Yeah, for sure. Come on Chris, let's go get some food since we're not good enough to eat with these two. Speaking of that, where's the other high and mighty one who didn't think enough of us to come get us for lunch?" Joey said, trying not to laugh.
"Oh, he's still with Jason, catchin some of the sights. He said he'd take us all out to kinda hit the good spots round town some time soon." Justin said.
"Oh, that's cool, would love to say I care, but I'm too hungry. Come on Joey, let's go!" Chris said as he grabbed Joey's arm and dragged him outta the room, both laughing the whole way.
"Well I'm glad they weren't too mad," Lance said to Justin.
"Nah, they were fine, but we're gonna hear bout it for the next two weeks!" Justin replied laughing.
"That's for sure. So what'd ya think of this Jason guy today?"
"Oh I thought he was pretty cool."
"Yeah, so did I. Nice to have a guy friend other than just the five of us. Cept do ya think he knows who we are?"
"Nah, I doubt it. He didn't let on to anything, and he even paid for lunch, kinda assuming that we wouldn't be able to afford the nice food."
"Yeah, I noticed that. Well Josh certainly has taken a liking to him. Doesn't that kinda bother you?"
"No, why would it? JC's my best friend, he's not gonna replace me for someone he just met." Justin said apprehensively. He wasn't quite sure what Lance was trying to get at, but JC had only come out to him, so he was gonna keep his word and not let Lance know if it killed him.
"Oh, I just thought maybe cuz ya guys were so close ya'd be upset that he wanted to hang out with Jason instead today." Lance said hurriedly.
`Because I don't like it. Because it bothers me. Because I already have to deal with JC spending all of his time with YOU, and never hanging out with me, and now there's another friend for him to be with. Because I love him and he'll never speak to me again if I tell him I'm gay or that I adore him!' Lance was lost in his own little conversation when he realized Justin was talking again.
"Lance? Hey buddy, snap out of it, come on!" Just said, snapping his fingers in front of Lance's face.
"Oh, sorry, just drifted into my own world for a bit. Um, I think I'm gonna go lay down a bit, I need some rest, hoops wore me out," Lance said as he quickly left the room.
`Well that was odd,' Justin thought to himself as he switched on Joey's big screen TV.
"Speaking of odd, how is it I didn't get one of these things in my room?"
Back at the zoo:
`Why have I still not told him? Probably because the right time hasn't come up yet.' JC thought to himself as Jason was finishing his story. By this time JC was sitting next to him and had Jason's hand clutched in his.
Suddenly Jason just stopped crying and looked up at JC.
"You're holding my hand. You know I'm gay and you're still holding my hand?"
"Well, of course, you're my friend and you need someone right now. So I'm holding your hand. It's a general sign for people to know someone cares. Least where I come from," JC said with a smile.
Jason just smiled back. He could be in horrendous pain and smile back at that face. "I just, well, thank you. I needed a friend, yes."
"No problem. Now, since you're done crying, do you feel any better?"
"Truthfully? Yeah, actually I do. It does help to tell someone you haven't known very long. Thanks." Jason said, drying the rest of his tears.
"Alright then, let's go, considering we're both covered in mosquito bites." JC said, laughing, and trying to lighten the mood. `Just tell him. Tell him now. "Yes, Jason, I was just holding your hand, because not only do I want you to feel better, but I want to kiss those salty tears from your cheek and make sure no one can ever hurt you again." Yeah right. You can't say that. He couldn't possibly want you. Even being in N'Sync can't save you now. Isn't it amazing that being one of the most popular people in the world right now could actually hurt you in this situation? He listens to rock music, you heard that in the car on the way here. He probably hates music like yours. But Justin did say he was checking you out. Of course Justin said the guy at that club was checking you out and he almost beat the crap out of you.' JC sighed.
Jason barely heard it. In fact, he wouldn't of heard it in the first place if he wasn't paying so much close attention to JC. But he was. And JC just sighed as though he was upset.
"JC, are you ok?" They were on their way back to the hotel, JC had decided they could watch some TV or something til the guys were ready to go clubbing. He had invited Jason along, and then asked where any good clubs were. Jason had just laughed and said he'd be happy to show em where they were.
"Huh? Oh yeah, I'm fine, was just kinda lost in thought for a minute."
"Oh, ok." Jason replied.
`No, it's not ok. You just sat and listened to me complain and cry for an hour about another guy, and you even held my hand and I don't want to even think of you upset right now.God, listen to yourself! Don't lose it over some guy you've only known 4 hours, even if he is incredibly gorgeous and has the deepest eyes you've ever gazed into and actually gave a damn about you.STOP!' Jason pulled into the hotel parking lot and noticed a lot of teenage girls near the entrance.
"There must be someone big staying here, too. Look at these crowds!" Jason said, laughing.
"Huh? Oh yeah, they said something bout some actor or something. Yeah, there's like a soap actor or something, girls have been here since we got here yesterday."
"Bummer, let's go round the side, I don't want to try and get through all those 12 yr olds."
"Good idea!" JC replied, trying to not be seen through the window.
Jason pulled around to the side and they got in without being seen surprisingly.
After Jason had met the other guys and had hung around for a couple hours, they all decided it was clubbing time. JC and Justin piled into Jason's car with him as Joey, Chris and Lance followed in the Jeep they'd rented for their stay.
Jason took them to his favorite club and they all started dancing. Luckily the club didn't play any hip-hop/pop music, so no one in there recognized them enough to make them dance or sign autographs. The guys were all having a good time when Justin pulled JC aside.
"So, how's everything going?"
"Oh, Justin. You'll never believe, it's the worst thing!"
"What?!" Justin said, very concerned.
"He's gay!"
"What?"
"Jason's gay. It's just awful."
"Um, excuse me, earth to JC, you're gay too! You want Jason. How is this not a great thing??" Justin couldn't believe his ears.
"Don't you see? He'd never want someone like me, besides, he just got out of this great relationship and the guy totally broke his heart. He's never gonna be interested!" JC almost started to cry.
"I hate to burst your bubble of negativity here bro, but this same guy who could `never be interested in' you, hasn't taken his eyes off you the entire time you've been talking to me here and not dancing with him!"
"What?" JC said, completely surprised as he looked up to see Jason staring at him.
Unable to not look obvious that he was staring, Jason just smiled and waved at JC. `Geez, boy, don't be obvious or anything, completely staring at the guy. He's never gonna want to be your friend he thinks you want him. What?.Oh come off it. You know you want him, just admit it already. Enough! I can't take this right now.' Jason needed air. He started to walk towards the exit when JC stopped him.
"Um, Jason.do you think we could talk?"
"Su..sure JC, whatever ya'd like."
`Great, you're an idiot. He caught you and now he's gonna tell you to leave him alone. Oh God, he wouldn't would he? Of course he will, he's not gonna want some little gay boy following him around and staring at him. Ugh, STOP!'
"Jason?"
"Huh, sorry, what?"
"I was saying I told the guys we were gonna go catch some dinner since we hadn't eaten, do ya mind if we go somewhere else so we can have that talk? It's kinda open here?"
"Oh, well sure JC."
`C'mon now, you can do this. He was staring at you, you saw it yourself. Just say it. "Jason, I'm gay." You don't have to profess your love or anything, just tell him you're gay. It's not that bad. You told Justin, and he's your best friend, you thought he'd never speak to you again. Jason's gay, too, he wouldn't turn against you for it.'
"So where are we going?" JC asked timidly on their way.
"Oh, well we're not too far from this place I know. It's real secluded and it's nice. I figured we could go up there?"
"Oh, sounds great."
