The meeting room at the LGBTQ2 centre was packed with people, all hiding in the dark. The room was decorated with ribbons, balloons, fancy tablecloths, and covered in mountains of food and pastries to be eaten by everyone.  They were all just waiting for the guest of honour to appear so the celebration could get started.  Voices were heard in the hallway which were getting louder as they approached the closed door.

"Tyler, this speech will be short because I've had as long as driving over from the office to write it," said the Chief Superintendent.

"I'm sorry sir, this was booked two months ago with your office and I know the kids will really appreciate you coming to speak to them today."

"I am going to find out who the hell screwed up and I will deal with them."

"It was probably an honest mistake, Sir.  Don't be too hard on anyone."

The footsteps stopped outside the door.  "Tyler, there's no lights on in there or noise."

"They're probably watching the promotional video I sent them on the police department.  Just go on in and find a chair in the back of the room."

"Where the hell do you think you're going?"

"I gotta take a dump real bad, Sir."

"Tyler, did I really need to know that? You know, TMI."

"You asked.  Too much info on it would be there is corn coming from last night."

"Get out of here you."

"Yes, sir."

John opened the door carefully, slipped in as quiet as a spy trying to find secrets and closed the door quickly.  He was waiting for his eyes to adjust when all the lights suddenly came on.  "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" everyone yelled.

John stood there with his mouth open as Gus came up and gave him a big hug.  "Happy birthday, husband.  It took me how many years, but I finally got you to come to a birthday party for you."

John heard the door open and close quietly behind him, without even looking over his shoulder he said, "Tyler, let me know how you like meter patrol on midnights using a golf cart."

Gus put his index finger in the middle of John's chest.  "Don't you pick on Tyler.  He had the most dangerous job of all of us.  Dealing with you directly and trying to pull it over on you."

John let a long breath out, "He did really well.  He knew exactly what buttons to push so I wouldn't think about it.  I would just react.  I can still pick on him if I want, though."

Tyler walked around and presented the Chief with a dozen red roses.  "From me, sir.  Happy birthday."

"They are beautiful, Tyler.  John, red roses are your favourite," said Gus.

"Hrummmpfff" John replied.  "Thank you, meter maid."

Gus had made a lot of the food, Jesse had some catered as well so there was enough to feed an army.  People were approaching John and shaking his hand after congratulating him.  Jesse, Jared, and Zane were standing in the back eating some vegetable sticks and watching John interact with the guests.  John looked at them, using his right hand he used two fingers to point to his eyes and then at them.  He repeated the sign a few times, and then with one finger drew a straight line across his throat.  The three in the back used their hands to make halo's over their head as a reply.

John was beginning to enjoy himself when Grandfather Mathew approached him.  "Happy birthday, my friend," he said as he extended his hand.

John grasped it firmly, "Mathew, I'm honoured you took the time to attend something like this.  I appreciate you being here."

"My friends and family mean everything to me. There is nothing more important than celebrating life with them."

"You're right of course.  I just forget it at times."

Liam came wheeling a cart in with a large vanilla iced cake.  It was actually quite tall, about 12" high and fairly wide at about 14".  The top of the cake was rounded.  Really unusual, almost like an old style bowler or derby hat.  Everyone started to sing happy birthday to John.

At the end, Gus said, "Liam, where're the candles?"

"Gus, the fire department wouldn't issue a fire permit for indoors with that many lit at one time," replied Liam with a smile.

John smiled back at Liam and mumbled,  "Payback is going to be a Melanie, Liam."

"I heard that John," came from the back of the room.

John turned his head towards Tyler, "You really weren't exaggerating about her hearing were you?"

"No sir, Dumbo has nothing on her."

John smiled, "She would put my grade 6 teacher Miss McAlpine to shame with that hearing and I thought she heard everything." Tyler smiled at him.  "Has she stomped on any villages lately?"

A voice from behind them quietly said, "Has the chief ever been wedgied before?"

John stood up straight, "I withdraw my last comments.  Tyler, you never warned me she moves as quiet as a ninja."

"Some things a person needs to learn for themselves," snickered Tyler.

"I'll remember that, metre maid."

"Where the hell is the cake I made for him?" Gus demanded.  "It was chocolate, his favourite."

Liam began to look real sheepish.  "There was an accident with it, Gus.  I am so so so so very sorry.  I felt sick so I made this one myself for him.  I'm so sorry."

Gus was about to blow up when John put his arm over his husband's shoulder.  "Gus, you got me to a party, and there's a cake.  It's perfect, even if Liam made it."

Gus settled down.  "You're right, John."

Liam handed John a 12" knife and said, "Come on John, cut the cake."

John took the knife but hesitated.

Liam's eyes twinkled as he said, "Come on John, think of me when you cut it."

John took the knife and quickly stuck it straight into the top and down until the point hit the cart under it.  He hadn't noticed Liam back up as he moved to cut the cake.  As soon as the knife cut into the cake, it exploded.  The cake was totally fake.  They had used cardboard to form a ring as the base and filled an industrial balloon with air for the centre.  The balloon was taped into place, and everything was covered in icing.  The icing dried, and they patched the areas which were too thin.  When the knife entered the cake, the balloon popped.  The icing flew everywhere, with a good quantity hitting John and Gus.

John put the knife down on the cart, dropped his chin to his chest, and then started laughing.  Gus was chasing Liam out the back door as all the guests started laughing.

Trevor and Nikita were on standby to help clean up the mess, and to help John clean himself up as well.  He looked over at Tyler who was leaning against the wall having trouble breathing while he laughed at the practical joke.  He saw John looking at him, and tried to straighten up and look proper.

"Tyler, your whole mob is going down."

"I had nothing to do with it."

"Guilt by association."

Melanie called across the room to John, "I'll help you, sir.  They deserve it."

"Its a deal, Melanie."

Gus came wheeling in another cart except this one had a huge hand decorated chocolate cake on it.  Liam came in behind Gus but ran to hide by Jesse, Jared, and Zane.  John smiled an evil smile at Liam before he applauded and bowed to him.  Liam returned the bow.

"You know its on don't you, Liam?" asked Jesse.

"Yup.  That's why your fingerprints are all over the tape which was used to make it."

Jesse looked at him as Zane and Jared began to laugh, "You evil little peckerhead."
