Jamie Lawrence - Chapter Twelve
"No, this is ridiculous. If Callum sleeps on the couch again, we're going to have to get him a new spine. Shall I check the Yellow Pages for Spines R Us?" Shane stared angrily at his father.
"What do you suggest we do?" Gerry flicked his eyebrows. "I've lent the air mattress to Roger."
"Then he'll just have to share my bed." Shane continued to stare at his father until his phone started to beep. He shoved it against his ear. "Yeah?"
'I really need to talk to you and Jamie.' Shane heard Darren sob. 'Can we meet? Please?'
"When you say he sounded upset?" asked Jamie as he jogged.
"I mean he sounded, like, really distraught. I've never heard him like that before. Honestly, I'm worried."
"And why are we running?"
"Because he said that he was waiting for us at the Golden Lion pub. I'm worried he might be looking for a dealer. There he is!"
Darren was pacing in front of the pub chewing on a fingernail. His eyes were wide and he looked on the verge of tears.
Shane touched Jamie's chest to stop him. "Let me." He walked up to Darren and took both of Darren's shoulders. "Darren?"
Darren looked at Shane and suddenly blurted out "How did you know you were gay?"
Shane was stunned by the question. Darren and he had never really shared intimate information before, and it took him by surprise. When Shane thought about the answer, he smiled wistfully. "The first time I knew for certain was the first time I kissed Jamie."
"And it didn't, you know, scare you."
Shane laughed. "Fuck, I was petrified! Right after we kissed, I told him that I was gonna kick the shit out of him if he told anyone. I spent the whole day FREAKING out!"
That didn't seem to be the answer Darren wanted. He groaned, pressed both palms to his forehead and resumed his pacing.
"Darren. What happened?" Shane furrowed his brow, worried.
Darren threw himself to the floor and rested against the wall of the pub. Obviously worried, Jamie darted over and slipped against Darren's left side. Shane took the right. "What's going on?" asked Jamie, concern in his voice.
Darren took a few deep breaths before managing to eke out one sentence. "I think I just kissed a boy." He stuffed his face into his hands again.
Shane and Jamie stared at each other across Darren's body. Jamie tried in vain to hide a little smirk. 'God, Jamie's cute,' thought Shane, before returning to the matter at hand. "I think we need to know more, Darren."
Darren started to sob. "You know that guy I mentioned? Kyle; the nurse?" They both nodded. "Well, I was, like, comforting him. Giving him a hug, you know? And then I started thinking that his shampoo smelled nice." Through his tears, Darren smiled. "He kept calling himself a silly bitch, and I kept telling him he was wrong. Before I even knew what the fuck was happening, I was kissing him."
Jamie touched Darren's brow. "Did you like it? Is that why you're so upset?"
Darren nodded and rested his head limply on Jamie's shoulder. Jamie wrapped his arms around Darren and gave Shane a smile. He mouthed the words 'You owe me a fiver'. To Darren he said, "It's okay, sweetie." He kissed Darren's forehead.
Shane cleared his throat to ask the million pound question. "Darren, do you think you might be gay?"
Darren started to cry. "I don't know. This is all just so fucked up!" Jamie shushed him softly and Darren actually laid his head against his chest. Jamie stroked Darren's head and waited with Shane for more. "I like Kyle, though." Darren smiled serenely.
Shane's heart melted. It was clear in Darren's face that he had feelings for this 'Kyle' boy. What was even clearer was that he didn't understand those feelings.
Jamie continued to stroke Darren's head. "Have you thought about asking him out?" He asked it gently as if it were a mere curiosity, rather than a veiled hint.
Shane shook his head angrily. He motioned for Jamie to move away a little. Out of earshot, Shane voiced his concern. "Darren is in therapy. He's falling apart at the seams, and you want him to turn gay?"
Jamie looked at Shane with fury in his eyes. "TURN gay?"
"You know what I mean. I think it's fucked up to throw this on top of all the other shit he has to deal with. Maybe we should give him the same advice your parents gave you."
"What? Do nothing? That's great. Pretend he's straight, marry some lovely girl. Have a couple of cute little bambinos. Then he can admit he's gay and ruin all those lives." Jamie shook his head. "No. He goes on ONE date with a guy, and he finds out for sure."
Shane chuckled. "We're acting like parents."
"Good practice for later." Jamie winked before dragging Shane back over to Darren. "So, what do you think of my idea?"
Darren shook his head quickly, looking slightly sick. "I can't do it."
Jamie winked at Shane. "That's a shame. I guess we could always hook Matty up with Kyle. He always wanted to date a nurse. Now we've found him one."
"What?! No! Matty can't have him."
"Why not? If you don't want him..." Jamie's acting was impeccable.
"I do!" It seemed to take a minute for Darren to realise what he had just said, and another minute for him to realise that Jamie had tricked him into it. He started to chuckle. "You little shit!" He playfully shoved Jamie away.
Jamie was giggling heartily. "So where are you taking him for your first date?"
"Fuck, that's too scary to even think about. Am I really gonna ask a dude out?"
"We're not asking you to marry the guy. Just see if there's any..." Shane stood and rotated his hips with his hands behind his head before finishing his sentence. "Passion."
"Sit down before you hurt yourself," said Jamie. "Darren. If you're really not sure about this, then don't do it. If you do it and you are in fact straight, all you've managed to do is hurt Kyle and give yourself something to regret. You need to be definite that you want to do this."
"You know, a week ago I would've beaten Kyle up over this."
"A week ago you were splayed out on the floor with a broken nose, so maybe the old you isn't the smartest dude ever," Shane pointed out. "By the way, how's the whole 'recovery' thing going?"
"Pretty good. The docs don't think I was, like, a serious addict or anything. They thing more than anything I need therapy and some will power. I've been seeing this therapist called Beth Lawre..." He paused and looked thoughtfully at Jamie. "What was your mum's name?"
Jamie looked at Shane with a huge, beautiful grin on his face. "Uh-oh. We've been rumbled." He giggled and looked back at Darren. "Yeah, Beth's my mother."
"What the fuck! Are you lot conspiring against me?"
"No." Jamie put a hand on Darren's thigh. "It's just a coincidence. Well, actually, not so much. If you want good therapy, my Mum's the best in the area, so you were bound to end up with her."
"I guess that makes sense. So, what do I do about Kyle?"
Jamie handed Darren his phone. "Call him, you numpty."
"I don't have his number."
Jamie rolled his eyes. "You said he is working in my Mum's office today?" Darren nodded. "Then call him there."
Darren started to dial and snapped the phone shut. He pulled it open again and started to dial again before closing it again. He repeated the process once more before Jamie grabbed the phone off him.
"For heaven's sake." Jamie dialled and waited before hitting loudspeaker so that he and Shane could both listen.
'Psychology department. Kyle speaking.'
"H-h-hi, K-Kyle," stammered Darren. "It's D-Darren."
'Ooh, hey D-darling,' mocked Kyle. He sounded so happy to hear Darren's voice. "What's up? Besides my dad's cholesterol."
"I was w-wondering if you wanted to d-do s-something this w-weekend? Like, w-with me." Jamie was mouthing the words 'calm down' and 'breathe'.
There was a pause on the line. Darren looked like he was about to cry when Kyle suddenly said 'Are you sure, sweets? After what happened before, I thought...'
"Yeah. I'm s-sure."
'Well, I can't say no to a cutie like you. Get a pen and I'll give you my digits.' Shane quickly pulled out his own phone and tapped the number in on Darren's behalf. 'Don't forget to call me, babez. Ciao.' Kyle make a quick kissing noise before the line went dead.
"Congratulations, cutie," said Jamie with a mischievous smile. "I think he likes you." Darren gave Jamie another playful shove, his face burning red and a huge, goofy smile on his face.
Callum Henry was a shy boy, and generally didn't speak to anybody unless they were related to him. Family HAD to like him, but nobody else was under any such obligation. The person he felt most comfortable around was his cousin Shane. Three years older than the thirteen year old, Shane had always been somebody Callum could look up to, and he had never had any qualms about being around him. He was more comfortable with Shane than he was with his own mother.
When he found out that he and his mother would be staying at the Carters' for the duration of Diane's recovery, he was over the moon. He would have a live-in best friend for the remainder of the summer, and a little more beyond.
It had become a little awkward when Shane insisted that Callum stay in his bed with him. He had never really got over his night-terrors, and some nights he still awoke, sweating and crying. Still, if anybody would be sympathetic, it was Shane. He was so nice to Callum.
When Thursday night came calling, Callum slipped into his pyjamas and tucked himself against the wall in Shane's bed leaving a good four feet for Shane. He didn't want to take more in case Shane got angry. Shane walked in a few minutes later in his pyjamas and took one look at Callum clinging to the wall before laughing. "Do I stink or something?"
Callum blushed and shook his head. Shane slipped into the bed and took up one half, leaving the other to him. Callum relaxed and squeezed his eyes shut. "Thanks for letting me sleep here," he said with heart-felt appreciation.
"It's cool. How're the vertebrae?" He sounded drowsy.
Callum giggled, his voice momentarily lapsing into it's prepubescent pitch. "Not too bad." He was going to say more, but he heard a shift in Shane's breathing and figured the bigger boy had fallen asleep.
He lay listening to the sound of Shane's breathing for a long time before he finally drifted off himself.
When the daylight broached the curtains and struck Callum's eyes, he stirred. As he moved slowly, he felt arms wrapped around himself. He tipped his head and saw Shane cuddled up against his back, spooning him. More than that, he could feel Shane's morning erection pressed between the cheeks of his bottom, their cotton pyjamas the only barrier. Curiosity welled within him and he cautiously moved in tighter against Shane. He felt the steel rod press more firmly into his posterior and for a moment, it simply rested there.
Shane woke slowly and he cast his eyes over the situation. "Sorry, Cal. I'll just get that out of your way." He chuckled and lay on his back, removing his morning wood from Callum's backside. "Gotta go drain the lizard." He rose and fixed his pyjamas before leaving.
Alone, Callum gingerly reached into his own pyjamas and touched his own five inch steely rod. It was definitely and interesting feeling. He thought of Jasmine Newman from his school as he began to happily stroke away.
On Friday evening, Gerry ditched his Mercedes in the driveway and opted to take a cab. Outside the Duck on the Water, he stuffed money into the hand of the odorous cabbie and wandered into the dingy, disgusting pub. All told, it wasn't an auspicious start to his new project.
He spied the man slumped at the bar and approached. He held up one finger to the barman who immediately poured him a whisky. Gerry settled into the seat next to Johnny Lawrence and sighed dramatically. "Long day."
Johnny's head flew up. "Huh?" He didn't look like he had been drinking at all. Gerry hoped that was true. "You talking to me?"
"Well, I was talking to my drink, but if you're hungry for talk, I guess I could buy your next round."
Johnny smiled widely. "Now you mention it, I AM feeling a little chatty."
Saturday night came slowly to Darren. In the two days since he had asked Kyle out, he had flitted frequently between frantically nervous and desperately excited until finally it was time to jump in the shower and ready himself for his first real date, with either a boy or a girl.
When he had started going out with Sarah, it had simply been because she was there. He never asked her out on a first date. In fact, unless they were making out, they were generally never in the same room.
Darren had no clue about proper dating, but at least now he was over the hard part. He had officially asked Kyle out and made proper plans to be alone together for a significant amount of time. Granted, they were going to see a film, so their attention would be divided, but he planned that they would stop for coffee after the movie.
Primped and preened, Darren continued to stare at his reflection for longer than was really necessary. He wondered if Jamie was right and he really was just going to break Kyle's heart when he realised he was straight. But hadn't Jamie also said he needed to find out?
Darren stared hard into the eyes of his reflection. "Let's do this." He checked his outfit one last time. He had decided to go simple; dark jeans to make his legs look slim and a t-shirt with a very low neckline which showed the outlines of his pecs. He grabbed his leather jacket and headed downstairs to the kitchen.
"You look nice, dear," said Darren's mother, glancing at Darren quickly before returning to fuss over a half-chopped onion. She didn't really seem to be paying him any real attention to him. Nothing new there.
"I've got a date." Darren started to pat himself down, checking for his wallet, phone, keys and anything else he may need for the night.
"That's nice. What's her name?"
In his distraction to check himself over, Darren didn't really think before he simply said "Kyle." He froze as soon as the name crossed his lips. He sent up a silent prayer that his mother hadn't realised what he had said. The sound of the knife clattering against the chopping board told him that his prayer had gone unheeded.
"I'm sorry; Kyle?"
Darren closed his eyes tight and bit his lip. 'Maybe if I don't move, she'll forget I'm here,' he thought wistfully.
"Darren, are you...g-gay?"
"Balls." Darren sighed. "It's not what it seems. I just..." Darren had no idea how to finish the sentence for the best. He could say that he just wanted to get to know the guy, but since there was more to it than that, it seemed wrong to say it. At any rate, a date is a date no matter what your intentions. He sighed again. "I don't know. But I want to find out."
Darren watched his mother's face. She moved her head left and right with a slightly dazed look for a few seconds. He had seen this look twice before. Once when she decided to leave Darren's birth father, and then again when she decided to ask his new father to move in with them. It was her 'assessing the options' look.
She nodded, blinked and faced her son. "Right. I want to meet him."
Darren was stunned. 'That was easy,' he thought. "Wait, meet him?"
"Yes. I want to meet the boy who you want to date. I would do the same if it was a girl, so don't go getting bent out of shape over it." She started chopping her onions again, humming softly to herself.
Darren reeled. He had just dropped one of the biggest bombshells a son can drop, and she was going on with her day. Maybe she really did love him after all. "Well, okay then. That's him beeping right now; I'll go get him."
Tanya Dempster was glad she was cutting onions. When her son returned with his date, she could claim that the misty look in her eyes could be attributed to that, rather than the grief she was feeling. She had decided very quickly that a gay son was better than an estranged son.
She kept muttering encouragements to herself. "It doesn't mean what it used to. I can still have grandchildren. So what if it's a civil partnership instead of a marriage? He's still my baby boy." She put her wrist beneath her eye and swept away a tear when she heard the front door swing open.
She dumped the onions in the pan and turned to face the boys. She apologised for her eyes before offering her hand to a little waif of a thing. His hair was blonde and swept to the side with gel, making him look 'preppy'. He wore a bright yellow shirt under a thin, fuchsia jumper which tightly hugged his tiny frame. He had his eyebrow pierced as well as his lip, but most importantly, he had the most infectious smile Tanya had ever seen.
"Mum, this is Kyle."
"Hey chick-a-dee." Kyle gave Tanya a wink.
Darren chuckled. "Kyle likes to call people silly names. I don't think he even notices he's doing it." Kyle stuck his tongue out a Darren. Tanya found herself smiling widely as she watched the pair banter with each other. They didn't seem to have 'first date jitters' in any way. They seemed so comfortable around each other.
"So, Kyle. What are your plans this evening?"
"We're going to see a chick flick."
"That's not your type of film, is it Darren?"
"I know, but Kyle really had his heart set on this 'The Forever Kiss' thing."
"Speaking of which," interrupted Kyle. "We're going to miss it if we don't shake a tail feather." Darren looked at his watch and nodded. Kyle grabbed his hand, and with a cheery "Bye chick-a-dee," they both left.
Alone in the kitchen, Tanya whispered into the pan "Take care of him."
Darren walked into the movie theatre with Kyle at his side. He scanned around and gathered that 'The Forever Kiss' was not a big hit. In a screen for two hundred people, there were barely twenty. Kyle had checked with Darren three times before they got their tickets, for which Kyle outright refused to allow Darren to pay.
Darren took Kyle's hand and led him to the third-to-last row. Nobody was sitting behind them. He shucked his jacket and deposited it on the seat to his right before leaning on the armrest between his and Kyle's seat. Kyle settled in as the film started rolling.
The first ten minutes were the typical preamble of every mediocre romance film in which you meet the two protagonists and establish why they could never be together. Fairly standard. Kyle kept 'aww'ing at the film, but Darren was growing restless.
He was wondering whether it would be appropriate for him to lift the armrest and wrap his arm around Kyle's shoulders. Twice his arm raised halfway to do it before he would chicken out and pretend to scratch his nose.
The third time, he half raised his arm and Kyle immediately seized it in his own. He lifted the armrest himself and dragged Darren's arm over his body. He tucked himself into Darren and placed his right hand on Darren's left thigh. The film rolled on.
Halfway in, Kyle looked up at Darren. "Sweetie, your ticker is drowning out the film. Would you calm down?"
Darren gulped. "Mmhm."
Kyle leaned forward and started to pull his jumper off. It was so tight that as he lifted it, his shirt came away with it, revealing his slender torso. Darren drank in the sight before him; infinitely more interesting than the film.
Kyle was so slim that he had a six pack by default. He didn't have a treasure trail, nor did he have any chest hair. What he did have were two pink nipples and a very cute tattoo of three stars leading up one side of his V-section. Darren couldn't help himself.
While Kyle was still trying to disentangle himself from the mess of clothes that were now encasing his head, Darren reached forward and took a tiny pec in each hand, before gently moving both down Kyle's chest. The soft skin sent Darren's heart rate through the roof. Kyle giggled when Darren first touched him, and then when he started his slow move downward, he moaned quietly, his head still hidden inside his jumper. "Oi," he giggled again. "Behave yourself." He was finally able to ditch his jumper and pulled his shirt back over his body, much to Darren's disappointment.
Kyle returned to the crook of Darren's arm and put his hand back on his thigh. When his hand touched down, it rested on Darren's long, throbbing erection which had developed whilst Darren explored Kyle's body. Feeling the pole, Kyle looked down at it and smiled.
He looked back to the screen, but his hand became Darren's entertainment. Kyle started to very slowly squeeze Darren's cock through the denim jeans. Darren closed his eyes and tipped his head back as Kyle's hand rocked back and forth over the length of the shaft.
Darren's breathing was becoming ragged as the friction worked it's magic. Darren could almost feel his orgasm approaching, when Kyle dragged his head down. Their lips met and Kyle squeezed even harder. As their tongues found each other, Kyle rubbed faster and faster until Darren was moaning into his mouth. The lip ring made things interesting.
Before long, Darren grabbed hold of Kyle's neck and rested his forehead against Kyle's as he felt the waves of pleasure blast through his entire being. It was by far the best orgasm he had ever had.
"Aah, aah, aah. Aaaah!" He felt the fourth shot leaving his dick and immediately thrust his tongue deep inside Kyle's mouth. Their kiss put the actors on the screen to shame. It seemed to go on forever, and Darren wanted it to.
"I'm glad Matthew cancelled the drinks. I much prefer what we're doing now."
"Oh, I know you do." Jamie could feel Shane's erection pressing against his bare thigh.
"How do you think Darren and Kyle's date is going?" asked Shane.
Jamie just shrugged, a feat made difficult by the fact that Shane was currently lying on top of him. He thought it was strange that Shane was thinking about Kyle and Darren, given what they were in the middle of doing. "Did I say you could stop?" said Jamie, giving Shane a look that left no doubt as to what he meant.
Shane chuckled and went back to kissing and nuzzling at Jamie's neck. "Hey, I was wondering." He kissed Jamie's collarbone. "If you wanted to change things up a little." He sucked on Jamie's neck a little. "Did you ever want to be the 'top'?"
"Phew," said Jamie. "I thought you were going to suggest whips and chains."
"Well, I'd like to try that too. Maybe not whips and chains, but, you know, bringing some fun stuff into the bedroom."
Jamie gulped audibly.
"It's okay if you don't want to."
'Damn,' thought Jamie. He was being so reasonable, it just didn't seem fair to give him an outright 'no'. "Can I think about it?"
Shane nodded. "And the other thing?"
"Other thing? Oooooh." Jamie took Shane's hand and pressed it to his cock. "You want me to ravish you with this." He giggled.
Shane took Jamie in hand and started to rub while he kissed all over his neck. "I was thinking of your birthday."
"This doesn't excuse you from buying me a proper present," said Jamie, only half seriously. He moaned softly as Shane continued to please him with his lips.
"I've already got your proper present," said Shane, planting his lips firmly on Jamie's left nipple.
Jamie forced Shane's head away from his chest and looked at him. "Really? Tell me, tell me, tell me!"
"Your birthday isn't for another month, so shut up. I won't tell."
Jamie started to pout as cutely as he possibly could. He thrust his bottom lip out, which of course was a mistake as Shane immediately took it into his mouth and started to nibble at it. Jamie, lost in the feelings of Shane's kisses and his hand on his throbbing cock, lost the will to pout.
Darren dangled his coat in front of the large wet spot in his jeans as they exited the cinema. Kyle giggled, half embarrassedly, half mischievously. "Sorry. I guess I got a little carried away."
Darren looked around to check there were no onlookers. Seeing that they were alone, he pressed Kyle into the wall, resting his full body against Kyle's. He kissed him deeply. "Don't apologise. I haven't cummed like that since I discovered wanking."
Kyle looked up into Darren's eyes, and Darren was staggered by how beautiful he really was. "It's still early. You want to get a drink?" asked Kyle.
Darren chuckled. "I'm too young, cradle robber."
Kyle blushed. "I guess I am."
"Hey, I was kidding!" Darren berated himself. He should have known how a crack like that would have sounded. "Let's get a coffee instead."
Five minutes later, they were sat in Costa Coffee around the corner from the GN16 theatre. Each had a large Latté. The sat on opposite sides of the table. Kyle had looked like he wanted to cuddle up to Darren again, but Darren was uncomfortable being in public like that.
They talked for a long time about themselves. Darren told Kyle about his music, his eyes wide as he talked about his favourite songs to play on the various instruments he had studied. Kyle talked about his work with the elderly patients and about how one old dear in particular seemed to dote on him.
Kyle revealed that every once in a while, he would appear in drag for a night or two for a bar on the Gay Village. "Not like, full feather boa and sequin nipple tassles. More a cute little dress and a wig. I do a few songs like 'It's Raining Men,' offer a few kisses to the audience and then walk around the bar for the rest of the night talking to the customers. It's a laugh.
Darren was fascinated. He had never met anyone like Kyle before. He was so confident, so sure of himself; something that Darren wasn't. The only thing that Darren was really sure of at the moment was that he liked Kyle. He liked him a lot.
Darren downed the last of his coffee.
"Shall we?" asked Kyle, indicating the door. "I'll drop you at Casa Darren."
Darren was a little sad that their date had to come to an end. 'All good things,' he thought to himself.
Half an hour later, Kyle pulled up outside Darren's house. Darren was about to jump out, but Kyle stopped him. He hopped out, flitted around the front of the car and opened Darren's door for him. Darren laughed.
Kyle walked him to his front door where they stood looking at each other. "I had a great time tonight," said Darren, taking Kyle's hand.
"Ditto."
Darren leaned down five inches to Kyle's lips. They pressed together, and Darren felt himself rising to the occasion once more. He gently playedd with the lip ring with his tongue.
They lip wrestled for a minute or two before Kyle pulled away. "Make sure you give me a bell." He quickly touched his lips to Darren's before heading off to his car. Darren watched him peel away in his bright orange Punto before he went inside. He closed the door and leaned against it, sliding to the ground.
He sat there for a few seconds, a wide smile on his face. "Oh, yeah. I'm definitely gay."
I hope you enjoyed this. Don't go looking for 'The Forever Kiss'. I made it up.
