Chapter 11:

Before I knew it, it was Thursday one week after the pain started, or at least, that's what I was told. I was asleep, at least I thought it was sleep and not blacking out, and then the next thing I knew John was holding me tight to his chest whispering into my ear that it'd all be over soon, in a few short hours I'd have my first shift. The excitement nearly overpowered the pain. Nearly, but not quite. We stayed in that position, me clinging to John, hoping that our body contact could send some of the pain to him so he could help me bear it. After a week of being in more pain than I could previously have imagined I was exhausted beyond measure, my body felt like it was going to give out.

Suddenly my body went completely rigid!

I felt like I could hardly breathe, but I could hear John in the back of my mind, he sounded like he was a mile away, "it's ok Jake, don't fight it, let it happen."

Let it happen, easier said than done but I tried with all the mental faculty that I had left to just relax. I could feel an itch begin on my feet and slowly work its way up my body, an intense itch, followed by a burning sensation. I could feel my bones begin to move and shift around as they lengthened or shortened as necessary, the pain was once again excruciating to the point where I was unable to remain conscious of what was going on, I could feel myself screaming but the pain was so intense I couldn't process the input from my ears.

I finally felt consciousness seeping back in and realized I wasn't me anymore. I was playing second fiddle to another brain it felt like. I couldn't control anything I was doing. It was like I was watching the action on a TV screen. One where I was one pissed the fuck off wolf snarling and growling at John. I had to get control, but how? It didn't take long for the others to crowd around the door to see what was going on, this made my wolf even more upset and angry. I needed to do something, I needed to gain control. It seemed like there was nothing I could do to speed up my brain taking control, I could slowly feel myself becoming more aware of my senses as if I was the one processing them now, and not just sitting along for the ride. I could smell and hear, oh my could I smell and hear! Slowly, I was gaining control over my wolf as my consciousness integrated with the wolf consciousness. I could feel it there with me. Once my brain was fully back in my control I fell to the floor and my eyes fell shut. What the hell? How do I operate this body?

"Jake, think about the wolf, you can feel him in there with you, embrace him, don't cut him off. Open up to him but don't let him have control. You need him to help you use your new body." I wish I could ask, `how do I do that John, it's not exactly normal to have a second brain!'

I mentally felt around and could sense the wolf still there, I tried to open up my mind and allow the wolf conscious to spill into mine. It was an amazing feeling once it happened. I could process everything that I was feeling. The touch of the ground I was laying on, the hands of John petting me, the sounds! The seemingly infinite sounds, but I could pick out each and every one and knew exactly what direction it came from and knew what most of them came from. The smells, if I thought there were a lot of sounds, it was nothing compared to the smells. I couldn't make out all the smells but my wolf apparently could. My wolf could pick them apart one by one and identify where it was coming from and what it was. Finally I figured out how to control my limbs. I had a tail!

I could swish my tail around and it felt great to control my wolf. I began attempting to sit up. It took a little bit, but by accepting everything my wolf brain was telling me, I was able to do it. Looking around I saw 3 big wolves in front of me that I could tell were John, Simon and William waiting for me to get used to my new body. The women were petting me and encouraging me. It took a couple attempts but soon I was walking and jumping and running around the bedroom. Now that I had full control, my wolf and I were both itching to get out for a run.

I made my way to the now closed bedroom door and sat down looking at the door and then at the girls. Their laughter rang tauntingly in the room. "Celena, I think he's ready to run don't you?" Henrietta said, they were apparently going to make me wait for it.

I let out a small whine and soon John was over next to me walking around me, rubbing up against me, it felt good to have him touching me even as a wolf. He stopped on my side and leaned into me and I returned the lean, rubbing our heads together. The girls were loving this and apparently had no interest in opening the door and letting us run so they could continue watching us, but one of the other wolves, I imagine Simon, barked sharply, apparently he had had enough.

Henrietta laughed again, "ok ok Si. You can run Jake, but be careful, let the boys lead the way and they'll be running with you." They opened the bedroom door and then went to open the door to outside, I was about to bolt forward when John stepped in front of me, letting Simon and William run out first and let me by after a few seconds, letting them get out the door ahead of me. Finally, I was outside.

It was intense, the sounds and smells! I couldn't contain myself, my wolf was ecstatic with being able to run around and play like this, it was as if he'd been cooped up in a cage for years on end, which I suppose he pretty much had. I couldn't blame him, I could feel the excitement and I had my own excitement as well. It was amazing. I ran in circles, chasing my tail, and then chasing John, switching between the two, and occasionally just take off running.

I was chasing a rabbit but not killing it, just toying with it for a while, and then at the last second before it was going to dive into a hole I lunged and got it by the neck snapping its neck instantly, laid down and enjoyed my late night snack. It was the most I'd had to eat in over a week, it was delicious. Until my human brain realized I'd just eaten a rabbit raw, I was able to suppress the urge to throw up, it was something I'd have to get used to.

At least one of the three was with me at all times, playing with me. At one point William and I started wrestling. He didn't want to, but I kept knipping his tail and hind legs and running off a few feet. He resisted the first couple, but the next time I got him good and he snipped back and I snipped back and then we were in a full on wolf-wrestle. It was fun, I didn't stand a chance, he was bigger than me and much more experienced but it was fun all the same. After he pinned me down to the ground with his body weight and loosely clamped his jaws around my throat, I whined my submission until he let go. Once he was off me I was jumping around and running around again as if nothing had happened. He just shook his head and let Simon take over watching me.

I did the same thing with Simon, Simon started playing right away, but he let me make mistakes without capitalizing on them, yipping at me when I did something stupid, as if I should know better. Then I remembered John's comments about getting closer to his wolf instincts. So I felt out for my wolf brain and let it have more control in the decision making process and controlling my body. I was making less and less mistakes and Simon was stepping up his playing too. After a while, I felt like I had held my own much better than with William, but Simon also in the end had me pinned and his jaws over my neck. He was breathing heavily and growling slightly until I whined my submission. I got up, finally exhausted, and noticed John and William sitting on the porch watching us. I could see a little bit of light starting to shine through in the sky. John yipped and I knew it was time to head inside. I walked slowly back to the house with my tail wagging wildly. This was amazing!

The great feeling was short lived. I was back in my room and laying out on my bed when the pain kicked in again. I could feel John at my side, already back to human, petting me and softly talking me through the pain. It was less painful than the transformation to wolf, but it was no walk in the park either. It was nearly a minute later, I was fully back to human and laying out on the bed in John's arms. "It's ok babe, you're back to human, the pain is done. It'll go away this time and be gone for good, just relax and lets get a couple hours of sleep."

I woke up to an empty bed and sun shining brightly into the room. My alarm clock said it was 11am. For the first time in a long time, I felt great. I felt alive. I could hear and smell! Not as well as while I was a wolf, but I could hear clear as day someone cooking and smell that it was eggs and toast. I could hear William telling Celena that he was heading to work. I forgot that today was Friday, everyone had to work still, life went on, it didn't stop just because I'd turned into a wolf last night. I heard Celena say, not yell, "Jake, if you're awake, brunch is ready." So I pulled on some gym shorts and went out to eat.

She beamed at me as I walked out, "good morning! I figured you'd be up by now and just laying there thinking, smelling and hearing! How do you feel?"

"I feel, absolutely amazing. Last night was outstanding, I don't know enough adjectives to describe it accurately. It was simply amazing, and yes, for the past little while I have been just lying there thinking, listening, and smelling. It's so awesome."

"What'd you do last night? William looked kind of grumpy this morning."

I gave a sheepish smile, "I got a little rambunctious last night, my wolf wanted to play and I let him, I nipped Willy a couple times to get him going, I may have nipped a bit too hard once.. or twice, he didn't take it easy on me, he had me pinned pretty quickly. After that Simon played with only a single nudge from me, I guess he wanted to spare himself, but he let me have a chance and took it easy until I could figure out how to use my wolf instead of doing it all with my human brain."

"Ah, ya, I figured it was something like that. He doesn't have any brothers, so he's probably never been there before, Simon's got a younger brother so he knows what it's like dealing with a young wolf." Her smile faltered a little bit, "well Jake, I'm sorry but, I'm under strict orders to keep you in the house today until they get home. John, Simon and Henrietta should all be home shortly after 4 and then William at 8. Also, they all said quite adamantly, no shifting until one of the guys is with you. Oh, and, while you were sick, William changed shifts starting next week. He's gonna be working the 7-4 shift like the rest of you. Next week you'll be here alone between 7 and 4 Tuesday through Friday, I'll be at school and everyone else will be at work. Speaking of school, I need to call and see if the bus comes out this far anymore."

"Good for William! Also, don't worry about it, I have my dad's truck and all of us can carpool to work once I start working. You can have my car. I'll go to the DMV next week and take care of the paperwork."

"Really?! Jake, I couldn't! I don't have the money to buy it off you. You've done so much for us I can't just take it from you."

"Fine, consider it an early Christmas, high school graduation, and wedding gift then, all in one."

"We'll discuss this later mister. One of my girlfriends is on her way here to pick me up, we're going shopping for school supplies, John already gave me some money. I'll be back probably after everyone else is home."

"Ok, take care of yourself and have your cell available."

"I will, sheesh, a third big brother, I'll never survive!" She made an exaggerated eye roll and laughed.

"Damn right! I never had a younger sibling, this oughta be fun! Oh, and I guess I missed your birthday a couple days ago, happy 18th!"

Just then a car pulled into the driveway, "Thank you Jake! That'll be my friend, back later Jake!" She gave me a hug before heading out.

I spent the rest of the day lounging around and cleaning up, doing laundry and working out. I felt like I had excessive energy and since I couldn't go outside to run, I worked out until I could barely lift my arms, let alone any weights. They said I can't shift until someone's here, I wonder why? Better to not piss off everyone so I'll do as told - for now. However, staying inside the house, I decided I could bend that rule a little bit and at the very least, sit on my porch. It was, by now, 3pm and they'd all be back soon. Sitting on the porch with my new senses was amazing. I felt like I could hear everything and smell everything. The minutes passed with me just sitting there processing everything and enjoying my new senses when I was able to hear the approaching truck that was no doubt carrying John, Simon and William, and brought a smile to my face. Maybe we could shift and run some more!
