"Good morning, sweetheart. Were you able to get the swimsuits for the boys while they were in school?" "Jeremy, I did, and they are wild looking. I hope the boys like them; they are packed with our clothes so our boys won't get a hint of where we are going tonight. I can't wait to see Jackson's face when we pull into the farm and he sees Seth; he's going to be so surprised."
"Alex, David, and Peter have never been on a jet as far as I know, so it should be a huge surprise to them, I hope it is. We are taking off early enough that they will be able to see what houses and buildings look like from 35,000 feet up. I think seeing what the tops of clouds look like will be the biggest surprise to them."
"They have no idea we are going anywhere tonight. I want to make them think we're taking an educational trip they think will bore them to death. I can't wait to see them bonding together like brothers should when we get to the farm. They're going to have a ball playing with the sheep and interacting with Seth and the mule. I just hope the mule takes to the boys."
"Helen, I think that mule will know what our sons have been through, and he will take to them like he did with Seth." "Jeremy, I hope so; those boys deserve to have some fun without fearing anything."
"Guys, did you have a good day at school?" "Mom, Mrs. Spencer did some science stuff when we were studying volcanos. She made a volcano on a big square piece of wood and put some powder in it and then lit a fuse like firecrackers have. A few seconds later, sparks started coming out of the volcano and while that was happening, she poured something in the top of the volcano and orange stuff that looked like lava started coming out. We learned what pyroclast means. Mrs. Spencer showed us different kinds of rocks that come from volcanos. I didn't know rocks from volcanos were different. She taught us that chemicals in the rocks is what scientists look at to tell what is in the lava that the rocks come from. Aphanitic rocks have real fine grains of sand to them and phaneritic rocks are rough with big grains of sand."
"Boys, if you were in college, what would you call the subject Mrs. Spencer was teaching you today?" Alex spoke up and said, "Mom, isn't it called geology?" "Alex, you are correct. We are going somewhere tonight, but when we get back, I'll take you to the mountains and show you what happens with sand that makes it into rock."
"Mom, where are we going tonight?" "Peter, there is a situation that your Dad needs to take care of at a history museum. We are going to be gone for a while before we come back home." "Mom, it isn't anything bad, is it?" "No, David, it isn't bad. Your Dad is doing some work to help set up a museum about books and history; you will understand once we get there." "Mom, that sounds kind of boring." "Jackson, we'll learn some things about history. You'll see when we get there and you'll probably have some fun."
"Boys, you have a duffle bag on your beds; I need you to put one pair of dress pants in each bag; three pairs of jeans, 7 pairs of socks, underwear, and tee-shirts. Pick out seven sports shirts you like and put them in the bag, and wear your favorite sneakers tonight since you will need them where we are going."
"OK, Mom, we think we have everything packed, would you or Dad please check our bags and make sure we have everything we need?" Helen checked her boy's bags and they followed her directions to a tee, so she told them they would get a treat when they got to where they were going. She nor Jeremy would tell them anything about the trip, not even that they would be traveling on a jet. None of the boys had ever flown anywhere.
"Boy's put your stuff in the van so we can head out." "Dad, we have already done that." "David, thank you. I am proud of you for being responsible and doing that. What you did is called `initiative'. All three of you come here for a minute."
When the boys walked over to their Dad, he hugged all of them, told them he was proud of them, and that he loved them more than anything in the world – and kissed them on the forehead. Alex, David, and Peter got misty eyed. That had never happened to them before. A hug to them usually meant their bio-donors were holding them to make it easier to beat on them. Jeremy saw the looks on their faces and said, "Boys, I told you when you became Mom's and my sons that you would never get beaten or whipped ever again. We love you too much to do something like that."
When Jeremy walked out of the bedroom, all three boys looked at Jackson and asked, "Jackson, has Dad ever whipped you with a belt or slapped you for anything?" "Never, and he won't. When Mom and Dad say they love us to much to whip us or hit us, they mean that." "Jackson, that is hard for us to understand because we got whippings or got hit every day."
"You need to get used to being loved in this home because that is all you'll get here. You won't get a whipping, you won't get hit, and you won't get yelled at. If I do something that Mom and Dad don't like, we all sit down and talk about it. They always explain why something they don't like shouldn't be done, and it always makes sense to me. They really do love us and want us to be happy."
"Boys, we need to go, so hop in the van. Jeremy pulled out of the driveway and headed to the airport. When they got there, the boys eyes bulged with surprise." "Dad, are you going to let us see what a jet looks like?" "Peter, I surely am. You are going to see how they put 8 seats side by side, and how many they can put in a row."
"Do you know what a stewardess or a steward is?" "No, sir, I don't." "Boys, they are the people who take care of the passengers when they are flying somewhere on an airplane, and they wear special uniforms so everybody knows who they are. They are usually very nice. Sometimes they may get upset if a passenger isn't very nice. If we are lucky, we might get to meet a couple of pilots." David said it would be neat to meet the pilots.
They went to the check-in counter and Jeremy got all of their tickets and they left their bags so they would be in the cargo-hold.
When it was time to get on the plane, Jeremy said, "OK, boys, it's time for you to see what the inside of a jet looks like." The boys thought they would see the inside of the jet and then go back to the van. Jeremy made sure that each of the boys had a window seat so they could look out the window and see what everything looks like from the sky. Jeremy sat next to Peter since he was the child most hurt by his sperm donor. He wanted to make sure Peter didn't have a panic attack when the plane took off. Helen sat next to Alex, and David and Jackson had the window seats between Jeremy and Helen.
When the push-back began and the plane started moving, all of the boys got a little anxious. Jackson and Peter jumped a bit when the engines started. When the plane started heading to the taxiway, the boys got excited. Jeremy explained to Peter that when the plane started moving fast down the runway, that it was called `committing,' because the pilot made the decision to takeoff when the control tower told him it was his turn, and once he started to take off, he had to do it; he couldn't just stop the plane.
When the jet went vertical for the takeoff, each of the boy's eyes bulged and they had a death grip on the arms of their seats. Helen and Jeremy smiled at that. When the plane reached cruising altitude, the boys relaxed and started looking out the windows.
Helen had been right, the boys were excited about seeing clouds from the top and how beautiful and white they are. When they looked toward the ground, they could see how neighborhoods were built in particular configurations. Helen would later explain the mathematics and physics behind what the boys were seeing.
The boys had lost all track of time. They were enjoying their first plane ride and making mental notes of everything. Jackson didn't put 2 and 2 together when the pilot said they were landing in Mobile. It was dark outside, so they couldn't see the airport was right on the Gulf of Mexico. They went to the luggage carousel, got their bags, and then headed to the car rental booth.
Jeremy completed all the preliminaries required, and the rental agent went and got the van they would use while they were in Alabama. As they were heading down the highway, the boys didn't miss a thing. When they passed a sign that said Orange Beach, Jeremy finally put 2 and 2 together, looked at his Mom and asked, "Mom, isn't Orange Beach where Seth lives and where his parents have a farm?"
Helen said, "Jackson, it sure is," and didn't say another word about where they were headed. They got to the middle of nowhere when Jeremy made a left turn on a dirt road. A few seconds later, he made a left onto the driveway of a large two-story white house.
"Mom, is this where we are going to stay?" "Yes, Jackson, it is." They exited the van with their bags and walked to the front door of the house and rang the doorbell. When Seth answered the door and he and Jackson saw each other, both boys got very misty eyed. When Seth saw Alex, Peter, and David he got extremely excited.
Dad Riley opened the door and invited everybody in. He and Jeremy shook hands and Phyllis and Helen hugged each other. The boys hugged each other and Seth took them to see how big his room was. He showed them the spare bedroom just through the shared bathroom. Seth and David would share his large bed and Peter and Alex would share the bed in the second bedroom.
A few minutes after the boys had gotten upstairs, Phyllis yelled up the stairs that dinner was ready. On the way down the stairs, Seth told the guys his Mom was the best cook in the world and that dinner was going to be really good. When they got downstairs and the boys saw Seth's Mom, Jackson looked at Seth and said, "Dude, your Mom really is gorgeous." Seth said. "I told you Mom was beautiful like Sally."
Phyllis heard what Seth and Jackson said and was smiling from ear to ear. As they walked into the dining room, Phyllis looked at Seth and Jackson and said, "Thank you. I heard what you said. You boys are really cute too." Seth and Jackson blushed and their Moms got a kick out of seeing them do that. As they were getting ready to sit down and eat, the doorbell rang.
"She, would you please see who is at the door?" "Yes, sir, Dad." Jim looked at Jeremy and winked, they knew who was at the door. Phyllis and Helen were grinning like Cheshire cats.
When Seth opened the door, he yelled, "Jeremy, when did you get here?" "Seth, we were on the same jet as Alex, David, and Peter. We got on before they did and we got off after they did so they wouldn't see us." "Jeremy went and hugged Mom Riley and Dad Riley and said, "thank you for letting me come down to see Seth and the guys." "Buddy, you are very welcome, but now we have a problem: where is everybody going to sleep? We'll figure something out after dinner."
Jim had talked to Don and Jay, and then to Jeremy. They made plans ahead of time so the boys could stay on the USS Alabama with a Boy Scout troop in Mobile. They would sleep where the sailors slept, and the next morning, they would have breakfast in the dining room where the sailors ate. They were in for a treat.
After dinner, Seth said, "Come on guys, I need to go feed the sheep and chickens so Dad doesn't have to. He's worked hard all day, so he needs to rest." Jeremy and Jim heard Seth say that, and Jim looked at Jeremy and said, "That boy is so amazing. It's rare to see a boy his age being so considerate. He has made us so happy since he has been here."
"Jim, my four boys are the same way. I have never seen three boys who appreciate being loved like Alex, Peter, and David. I can't imagine the hell they went through before Jackson told me what was happening. The day Helen and I adopted them, after their egg and sperm donors were sentenced to prison, was the happiest day of our lives, next to the birth of Jackson."
"Jeremy, it is the same here with Seth, Peyton, Richard, and Jaiden. We consider Charley and Dale our boys as well and all six are the pride of our lives." "Jim, why has Hashem blessed us so?" "Jeremy, that is a million-dollar question I won't ask Hashem until I see Him face-to-face, I am just going to thank the Almighty for letting me be able to care for my boys and for blessing me and Phyllis and making us so happy." "Jim, if you get to Heaven before I do, thank him for putting Don Stanislauski in our paths." "Believe me, Jeremy, that is going to be at the top of my list of thanks."
Jim, Jeremy, Don, and Jay went out onto the deck and watched the boys getting the sheep in and feeding them in their corral. Jim said, "Jeremy, did you notice what just occurred?" "I apparently missed something, Jim, what happened?" "Jackson and the boys started to get some bags of food for the sheep and Seth wouldn't let them. He knows all four of them still have a lot of healing to do before they can start doing stuff like that. Damn, that boy is so considerate, loving and sweet."
"You know, Jim David, Peter, and Alex are the same. Helen and I feel so fortunate to have them. We've sat and watched them at the house and we couldn't help it, tears just started in both of us. They have so much fun together. We look in on them several times a night to make sure they are ok and not having nightmares. They've only had one so far and Helen and I went into their rooms, rubbed their backs, and talked to them softly. I laid down and snuggled with Peter one night after he had a horrible nightmare. He was able to go back to sleep fairly quickly, and I went back to Helen's and my room."
"The next morning, Peter hugged me and said, `thank you for helping me last night.' I cried all the way to the office." "You're not alone, Jeremy. We don't want Peyton and Richard to worry, so we haven't told them about the hard nights Seth has had. There's only been a few, but they were pretty bad. Phyllis is especially good at helping Seth through those times. I can't tell you how many times I have thanked the Almighty for sending her into my life, even if it was in kindergarten." "Has it been that long for you, Jim?" "It has been that long. We have been a couple since kindergarten."
The boys had finished feeding Peyton and the sheep, so Dad Riley rang the bell. Seth looked at the guys and said, "That's our signal to go the house. When they got to the house, Dad Riley said, "boy's, go get your bags and put them in the van. We don't have enough room for everybody to stay here tonight so we guys are going to go stay in a hotel in Mobile." Don was sitting on the deck grinning from ear to ear because he knew Jeremy was going to be excited beyond belief to stay on the ship after Seth had told him about it.
Phyllis and Helen came out on the deck, and Phyllis asked if the guys were about to head to Mobile for the boy's surprise. Jim told her they were, so Phyllis looked at Helen and said, "SHOPPING!" The doorbell rang again, and Dad Riley went to the door. Seth didn't know Jenny and Rob had flown down with their boys, and that all the guys were taking a trip together."
When Seth came down and saw Sally, Rob, Nathan, Ben, and Michael, he let loose of some alligator tears as he hugged Jenny and she gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Little bro, are you surprised to see us?" "Jenny, I am so stoked to see you, this is an awesome surprise. I love you so much!" "I love you too, Seth."
"Jenny, this is my friend Jackson, and these guys are his new brothers, David, Peter, and Alex. They had the same problem I had, and their Dad adopted them the same way Dad and Mom adopted me! Isn't that awesome!"
"It sure is, Seth. Guys, how are y'all doing?" We are doing well, Ms. Jenny." "Hey, I am Seth's sister. I'm just plain ole Jenny, OK?" "Yes. Mam." "Well, don't just stand there, come give me a hug!" All the guys hugged Jenny and got a kiss on the forehead. Jeremy got a kick out of seeing that and told Dad Riley that since Peyton told him about their family tradition, it was also now a Berkowitz family tradition.
"OK, guys, we need to get to the hotel. Are your bags in the van?" "Yes, sir, they are." "OK, pile in!" Since Jeremy had added Jim as a driver on the van contract, he would drive everybody to the ship.
When everybody arrived at Battleship Park, the boys were as excited as they could possibly be. When they got out of the van, Dad Riley told them to get their bags. Seth looked at his Dad and said, "Dad, are you kidding? Are we really going to stay on the ship tonight?" "Son, we are. You said you wanted to stay on the ship sometime, so when we planned for everybody to meet at the farm so you boys could see each other, I made reservations for the guys to stay on the ship tonight. We get to eat breakfast just like the sailors did when they would sail across the ocean." "Dad, thank you, thank you, thank you! You are so awesome." "Seth, thank you, I love you too."
They went and put their bags in the sleeping berths where they would be staying and their Dads then took the boys on a tour of the ship. They got to go in every area downstairs and to see where they would shower in the morning. Seth said that Charley and Dale would love to see the engine room since they were engineers and might design something like the engines. Dad Riley said, "Seth, when Jaiden and Peyton come down, they'll have to bring Dale and Charley. You know Dale's parent live just across that big bridge you see to our left." Just as Dad Riley had said that, Dale's and Charley's dads walked up and would be staying with the men tonight and helping with the boys. They had spoken with Peyton, Jaiden, and Richard so they would know how to help the boys if they had nightmares while on the ship.
When the boys had seen everything downstairs, they went up to the deck and looked at the cannons and the huge turrets. They went inside the turrets and were amazed at how large the cannons were when they looked at the inside of the barrels that were lit up so they could see the inside. They got to see the Captains quarters and where the other officers on the ship stayed. When they saw the infirmary, they all said it looked so small.
They got the biggest kick out of climbing up the conning tower to see where the sailors ran the ship. They could see all over Mobile Bay, and across the bridge to Pensacola. They got to sit in the Captain's chair, something they couldn't do on a ship that was still in service.
By the time they got back down to the deck, they were exhausted, so they sat on the deck and talked until they got sleepy and wanted to go to bed. When they awoke the next morning, they were all antsy to go to breakfast to see what they would have. Since they were all Jewish, they had beef sausage instead of pork. There was scrambled eggs, all kinds of fruit, biscuits and toast and all the jelly and jam they could have thought of.
After breakfast, Dad took Seth and the boys to Navarre Beach near Pensacola and stopped at a shell shop that is on the right just as you cross the bridge to the beach island. Seth had a blast showing his brothers and his nephews the various shells and telling them what they were. He found some coral and explained it was part of the biodiversity of the ocean. They left the shop and drove around to the beach.
When the boys started walking on the beach, Seth saw sandfleas in abundance and he chased them. When they buried in the sand, he scooped his hands under where the sandfleas buried themselves and pulled them out of the sand in his hand. He caught a female sandflea and showed the guys that if they pulled up a V-shaped hinge, they could see the eggs in the female. After that lesson, the boys spent most of the afternoon catching and playing with sandfleas.
As the tide started coming in, starfish started washing up on shore. Seth caught several, and showed everybody how the starfish ate, and taught them about how the starfish swam around in the water. The guys were having a blast watching Seth as he became mesmerized by all the animals on the beach.
Just as everybody decided to go for a swim, a gam of bull sharks started swimming close to shore, so the lifeguards made everyone get out of the water. No swimming flags were raised due to the sharks, so everyone decided to go to lunch.
Seth asked his Dad if everyone could go to the seafood restaurant on the beach, the one Peyton loved so much. His Dad couldn't say no to that request, so Seth got his wish. What he didn't know was that there was a buffet lunch on Saturday. When Seth, Jeremy and his brothers saw the buffet, they were like runners braced against the starting blocks waiting on the starting whistle. Dad looked at Jeremy and said, "watch this. Those boys are antsy to get to the buffet, but Seth won't go until I give him permission. We always sit down and get settled before heading to the buffet, and he is used to us doing that. I am going to wait a few minutes to see just how antsy he'll get." It didn't take but a minute or so before Seth was moving around like he was about to die to go pee.
When Seth appeared to be getting desperate, his Dad said, "Seth, why haven't you gone to the buffet and gotten your food." When his Dad said that, all the boys took off like runners in a 440 race. Jeremy watched as Seth loaded his plate and asked Jim how the boy could eat all that food.
"Jeremy, I have no idea but he never eats like that unless it is at a seafood buffet. Before he came to us, he'd never eaten seafood, and he'd lived in Erie all his life. When Jaiden and Peyton had him at their house, Jaiden got so upset when he would realize things Seth had missed out in his life. We're still seeing things Seth never got to experience.
Before he came to live with Phyllis and me, the boy had never had a real home cooked meal. Everything he ate came out of a can, or box, and was warmed in a microwave.
The shark warnings would be out all day, so Dad Riley reminded the boys that they had not seen the submarine at Battleship Memorial Park.
Everyone piled into the van and off they went.
The boys quickly headed to the submarine as soon as they arrived at the park. While they explored the watercraft, the head ranger at the park walked up to Dad Riley and told him that a small Cub Scout Pack had cancelled their night on the ship and that the funds were non-refundable, so if the boys wanted to sleep on the ship one more night, they were welcomed to do so.
When the boys were coming out of the submarine, Dad Riley looked at Jeremy and said, "I'm going to pull a fast one on the boys. I'll get them a little confused before I let them know we are staying one more night on the ship."
"Boys, don't you think it took you a long time to tour that small submarine? We could have been headed home by now and be eating dinner with your Moms. I know they cooked a feast! Since we can't get home by dinner, you boys can just have a seat on the curb until we figure out what we are going to do."
"Jeremy, what do you think we should do with these boys for taking so long in the submarine?" "Jim, why don't we let them sit on the curb for an hour as punishment?" "They still have some healing to do, so what else could we do with them?"
"Jim, I have a good idea! Why don't we make them sleep on the ship one more night?" "Oh, I don't know about that. I don't know it they want to sleep on the ship another night."
The boys started begging, "Please Dad, let us stay on the ship one more night." They asked several times before Jim, Rob, and Jeremy started laughing and Rob said, "boys, you can't sleep on the ship if your bags and sleeping bags aren't in the sleeping berths. Don't you think you should take care of that problem first?" When Rob said that, the boys took off for the van and got all the things they needed to sleep on the ship and put them in the berths where they would be sleeping.
They went over the ship with a fine-toothed comb to make sure they hadn't missed anything the day before. How those boys could so quickly climb the ship's conning tower was amazing. The speed with which the boys descended the tower was equally fascinating. They pretended they were firing the canons and protecting the ship. Orders were barked from one boy to another as if they were in the Navy giving and taking orders. They all still had trouble moving quickly due to their healing injuries, so attempts at running on the deck were kept to a minimum. Jackson refused to run at all; he didn't want to risk going back to the hospital and have another surgery – not even if Sally would be his nurse.
Rob watched Jackson, Alex, David, and Peter in wonderment at what they were doing, given that their injuries were so recent, and still healing. As he watched them, he wrote in his mind the sermon on determination, resilience, and attitude that he would preach in the temple once he returned home. He would tell the story of the boys and how they pushed through their injuries, and how they overcame their pain. He thought about how much they had lost, and how much more they had gained in their experiences, and compared the boys with the story of Job. He couldn't think of a more exacting comparison.
When they learned they would stay on the ship one more night, Seth called Jessie to see if he could join them. His Dad got him to the ship about an hour later, and he joined the rest of the boys. Seth took him to the sleeping berths and told him to put his bag next to his. The berth Seth had was an extra-large berth that had enough room for him and Jessie. Before they headed back to the deck, Seth stole a kiss from Jessie, who grinned from ear to ear. Somehow, he had an idea that his night with Seth was going to be on the romantic side.
Everybody got together to figure out where they were going to go for dinner. There was a beautiful Mall, Cordoba, not too far away that had a family restaurant inside. The Dads decided they would take their sons there to eat. Roast beef that was cooked to perfection, fried chicken that was as good as grandma's, and vegetables that were delectable.
Jackson and his brothers got a yellowish vegetable they thought was sweet potatoes, but it wasn't. Peter asked his Dad what kind of vegetable it was, and Jeremy said it was rutabagas. None of the boys had any idea what a rutabaga was, but one thing they did know, the rutabagas they were eating were delicious. There was an Albertson's down the street that has a vegetable department that is second to none, so the Dads took the boys to the store and showed them the raw forms of the vegetables they had just eaten.
Everybody headed back to the ship after dinner and while the boys were playing on the deck, Dad Riley took the time to send pictures of the boys on different sections of the ship, and climbing and descending the conning tower. At the end of the email, he said, "Peyton, Jaiden, Richard, here is proof that you three do great work. I am so proud of you. Love, Dad."
A few minutes later, Peyton called his Dad and thanked him for sending the pictures. He said Jaiden and Richard were working in the ER and that they had been extremely busy that weekend; Sally was working on the floor, and that when the three got to the house after work, he would show them the video.
The babies were way ahead of where they were supposed to be at their age, and the grandparents had not been told of their latest advancement. Peyton sent his Dad the most recent video he had taken of his boys, and said, "Dad, there is a new development with the boys that you haven't seen. I hope you enjoy this short video. I love you. Peyton."
Dale and Chuck were visiting with the boys and their Dads, so Dad Riley showed them the video. All three, and Rob, had tears trickle from their eyes as they saw their seven-month-old grandbabies walking around in the den. They noticed baby gates had been placed at the breakfast nook, the dining room, kitchen, and the stairs on both sides of the den, and the Grandads were proud their sons had the forethought to do that.
It was getting late, so everyone decided it was time to retire for the night. All the boys got in their berths, their Dads checked on them, shut the door, and went to their room next to the boys.
Seth and Jessie gave the other boys time to fall asleep, and when they did, tee-shirts and briefs came off and were pushed to the side of their berth. Seth kissed Jessie passionately as they explored each other's bodies.
Jessie pulled Seth's legs apart a little bit so he could get his hand in the right spot. He played with Seth's scrotum, gently massaged his testicles, and began to slowly rub his penis up and down. He kept things as quiet as he could. He maintained a slow rhythm until he felt Seth's body tense, and then release all he had inside of him. Jessie ran his fingers through the pools of spunk on Seth's chest, and then raised his finger to his mouth, tasted his boyfriend's love juice, and whispered in Seth's ear that he really was a "sweetheart."
Seth rolled over onto his right side, faced Jessie, and began to kiss him passionately. As he did, he began a descent on Jessie's body until he reached the intended destination. When he did, he took Jessie into his mouth, and began slowly pleasuring his boyfriend until he felt Jessie's penis begin to swell, and his body begin to tense. He backed off Jessie and finished the job by hand. Like Jessie, he rubbed his fingers through Jessie's semen, raised his finger to his mouth, and tasted his lover's nectar. As Jessie had done to him, Seth whispered into Jessie's ear that he was more than a sweetheart, he was the perfect boyfriend.
Seth had hidden away a wet wash cloth that he removed from a bag to clean Jessie, and then himself. The wash cloth was placed back in the bag, and hidden away in Seth's duffle bag until they got up the next morning to shower before heading home.
While the tee-shirts remained off, they did put their briefs back on to diffuse any suspicion that may have come up if they had awoken and gotten up naked. Like Jaiden and Peyton often did, they woke up the next morning holding each other as they had when they fell asleep.
