CHAPTER 7 . Two years of love

Enrico, after stopping for a few days in Bologna at some friends' house, advised by them, decided to move to Ravenna and there to open his consulting room as a physician. His father gave him enough money to buy an apartment with a room to use as surgery.

At first he decided not to hire a nurse, as he was not yet sure to earn enough money. He just had a part-time servant who was going to clean the entire apartment every other day. It was enough.

After the first days to settle down, he started to miss Tonio, or >somebody who could give him, beside sex, some human warmth. He started to look around and to weigh the handsome males - they weren't lacking in that small and ancient city.

Particularly he was struck by a very young soldier who was on guard at the city gate. When he was going outside the city walls for a stroll, the soldier, starting to recognize him, gave him a nod. Enrico answered, thinking that the boy, possibly a fresh recruit, was really attractive. He asked himself if, as often happens in the soldier's quarters; the boy didn't indulge in erotic practices. It was possible, as the boy was really nice, and his elder comrades must have put their eyes on him... and maybe not only their eyes.

"Good afternoon." Enrico said once, passing near him.

"Good afternoon to you. Out for your daily stroll?" the youth answered with a smile.

"Right. How can you know I'm going for a stroll?"

"I didn't know, I just guessed it - you always pass here at this time and are back after one hour. And you always are alone. And the direction you take leads only to the pine-forest, and there are no houses there."

"What's your name?" Enrico then asked.

"Dago."

"Is it your family name?"

"No, my given name. It's Dagoberto, but I don't like Berto, therefore... Dago."

"An unusual name. Do you like it?"

"Do I like it? It's just my name."

"My name is Enrico. Enrico Piccin."

"Are you a Venetian?"

"From Vicenza. And you?"

"I? From Mezzano."

"Ah, not far from here. Do you have your family here?"

"No, just a distant relative, an uncle. I'm an orphan."

"How long have you been a soldier?"

"Seven years."

"Seven? But... how old are you?"

"I will be twenty three, the day after tomorrow."

"You are almost a veteran, then. Do you like your job?"

"I like it... I got used to it. It is in a way my family, now. What is your work?"

"Physician."

"Oh, I hope to never need you, then!" the youth merrily said.

Enrico nodded, they exchanged a few more remarks, and then Enrico greeted him and went for his walk.

They talked together some more times and Enrico felt more and more attracted by the boy. One day he met him downtown, while the soldier was coming out of a tavern.

"Hi, Dago, are you on leave?"

"Yes, mister Piccin."

Enrico was pleased that the boy remembered his name. "And what you do, now?"

"Nothing. I just grew tired drinking with my comrades. I was planning to go for a walk. And you?"

"I am on my way back home. I too have nothing to do, this afternoon."

"Would you mind if I come with you for a short while?"

"No, not at all!"

When they were under Enrico's home, he said, "Well, I live here. Why don't you come upstairs for a while, if you have nothing better to do?"

"Why not?" the young soldier said merrily.

As they were inside, Dago asked where he could leave his weapons. Enrico took him to the living room, "Here they are safe."

Dago pulled off his bandolier, the cartridge belt and put everything, with his fusil, on a settle.

"Would you like a drink?"

"No, I already drank enough. I don't like to lose control. I don't like to get drunk, differently from some comrades. I want to remain master of myself."

"You are right, and wise. You have no vices."

"Wise..." the youth echoed with a smile. Then added, "And by the way I too have my secret vices, you can swear it."

"Really? And which are they?"

"If I told you, they would no longer be secret, would they?" the youth again smiled.

"I like the way you smile." Enrico said and brushed lightly his face with his fingertips.

"Only that?" Dago asked and, grasping Enrico's hand, took it at his lips and gently bit a finger with a sensual glance shining in his eyes, then said, in a low and hot voice, "You like me, don't you?"

Enrico felt his heart jumping in his chest, "I like you, yes... And you?"

"I too like you. Where is your bed?"

"That way..."

"Wouldn't you take me there?"

"Come..." Enrico answered, excited.

When they were in the bedroom, Dago started at once to undress and Enrico readily followed suit. The boy's body was well built, agreeable, and attractive. They went on the bed and, without talking any more, started making love with enthusiasm. Dago, strongly aroused, at a certain point, his eyes turbid with desire, begged Enrico to mount him and, on his fours, he stretched his back towards the young man. Enrico kneeled at his back and took him with gentle impetuousness, pulling him to himself and groping all his firm and hot body. Dago tossed under him, moaning aloud his pleasure, and pushed his back against Enrico's groin, to better feel his strokes. He seemed like a frisky colt. Enrico caressed and kissed him, continuing to take him with gusto, until Dago reached his orgasm and soon after also Enrico took his delight inside him. They stayed for a while still, shuddering, and then they slipped down on the mattress, embracing and gradually relaxing.

"Did you enjoy it?" Dago then asked him, softly lying down against Enrico, his head leaning on his chest, caressing his belly and sides.

"Yes, and you?"

"Yes. You are different from my comrades. They... just fuck me and that's all. I don't complain, they fuck nicely and give me pleasure. But you do it so tenderly... Yes, you are different, and I like you."

"Then... you will come again here?"

"Willingly, when I can. I now know the way."

They met several times and were getting fond of each other, but one day Dago was moved to Lugo and they had to say farewell.

Afterwards, Enrico had few other adventures, mainly sailors just passing through. He first offered them a drink, and then proposed them to go at his place - almost all of them accepted willingly. But of course it usually ended there.

A day, while he was going to see an ill client, he passed in front of a spices shop. He absent-mindedly threw a glance inside the shop and behind the counter saw a young man of uncommon beauty. He stopped to look at him for a few seconds and felt his heart speeding up. Enrico had to move away from that vision, as his client was waiting for him, but he was unable to erase his image from his eyes and mind.

The following days he did so that he passed again in front of the spices shop and each time he felt excited. He said and repeated to himself that the fact that he was so beautiful didn't automatically mean he could nourish hope, to no purpose. He was literally bewitched by that young man, by his unusual beauty.

And finally, one day, he decided to enter in that shop.

"Do you sell Cayenne pepper?" he asked with his heart in his mouth.

"Yes, sir, how much would you like?" the young shop-keeper affable asked him.

"Three ounces, please." Enrico answered, enchanted but that voice and that smile.

He observed the shop-keeper while he was serving him and felt irresistibly attracted. Troubled, he paid and went out. He was feeling his head light as if he drank a little too much. He told himself that the shop-keeper courtesy was only due to his skill that it was not really directed to him but to the client, to every client... but the smile with which he served him was enchanting. He ardently desired that the smile could one day be for him, and only for him.

All the week long, Enrico was in a quandary and at last, after passing several times in front of the shop, he decided to enter again.

Evidently the shop-keeper remembered him, as he asked him if he enjoyed his Cayenne pepper. This gave a deep pleasure to Enrico, who in reality didn't even use it, but he ordered five more ounces. The shop-keeper smiled and told him he would make him some reduction.

He was possibly an expert merchant, he was skilled in treating customers to keep them, he thought, but he was delicious. Ah, being able to kiss these lips, to touch that body... it had to be something sublime.

"Pardon me, sir, if I dare, but... are you from Venice?" the shop-keeper asked him.

"No, I am from Vicenza." Enrico answered smiling happily as the other was taking some interest in him.

"But do you now live here?" the other asked.

"Not far from here. I had to leave my land for political reasons. But you too are not a native, am I wrong?"

"Not at all, I am from Costa, a small village near Rovigo."

"We are almost fellow townsmen, then." Enrico said interested. "But you, it's a long time you are away from Costa? You don't have the accent of that land."

"It is now almost six years since I moved away." the shop-keeper answered him.

Then Enrico dared to ask the question he had in his heart that urged at his lips, "Do you have your family, here in Ravenna?"

"No, I am alone, I live here in the back-room." the young man answered giving the pepper to Enrico, who could do nothing but pay, say good bye and go out, with regret. I would have liked staying there longer, to look, to listen, and to enjoy his fresh and bright smile.

He thought of him all the day long, he thought of him while falling asleep and his first thought when he woke up was for him. He wanted to see him again he had to see him again. Soon... now! But how? Then he got an idea and hurried up to the shop. Approaching it, for the first time he looked at the signboard - in golden letters there was the name of the proprietor; could it be that beautiful young man?

He entered almost upset. And he found him in front of him, smiling, beautiful, and terribly desirable.

"Forgive me, but my servant spilled all the pepper on the floor therefore I need to buy some more..." Enrico said, hoping that his voice didn't betray his emotion. And that the pretext was believable.

"Again five ounces?" the other asked graciously.

"Yes, thank you." Enrico answered, making an effort not to look at him in a too obvious way.

The shop-keeper weighted the pepper and put it in a small cornet, handed it with a smile and told him he would make him a lower price to compensate his loss. Enrico thanked him but didn't pay at once - he didn't want to put to an end that meeting too soon. Thus he asked him for how long he sold spices, then if he was the owner of the shop.

When the other confirmed, he told him, "Therefore the name on the sign is yours, I presume."

"Yes, it is my name."

"Gaetano Lugato. A beautiful name." Enrico said excited - non he knew the name of the beautiful shop-owner. Then he thought he could introduce himself, "I know your name but you don't know mine; I am Enrico Piccin, and I am a physician."

"How do you do. Are you a doctor here in Ravenna?"

"That's right. I was friend and collaborator of Doctor Carlo Poma. I don't know if you heard about him - he was killed by the Austrians in Belfiore, because of his political ideals. This is why I had to take the way of an exile." Enrico explained.

The beautiful Gaetano nodded without talking. So Enrico thought he didn't like to lose his time with him. "I'm making you waste your time, forgive me. Here, yours ten baioccos and thank you again for your kindness." He said and paid him.

But to his surprise and joy, Gaetano told him that he had nothing to do and that he was pleased to talk with him. Enrico, rejoicing, offered him a coffee in the nearby shop and readily Gaetano accepted. They went out together and Enrico felt elated.

In the coffee shop they talked, mainly about themselves, almost as if they were both eager to know the other and to make them known by the other. Enrico was more and more happy. When they parted, they made an appointment for the following day. Enrico was beaming. On the following days they continued to talk about themselves to the other, about their ideals, their dreams, their stories. Gaetano life was adventurous, notwithstanding his young age - son of farmers, seeming talented for music, he studied violin. But then his father made him stop and go back to the fields work. The boy fled from home, was a ship's boy, then the caretaker of a hides store, then lived for a certain period as a prisoner of brigands but became affectionate to one of them and the man, on the point of his death as he was wounded by the pope's soldiers, gave him all his gold and with that Gaetano bought that shop.

Enrico appreciated that the other narrated him also so delicate aspects of his life - Gaetano was giving him full trust revealing also those details. Soon they started to call each other by their names. Enrico felt that a beautiful friendship was born with Tano, even though nothing let him think that the young shop-owner could feel for him more than a friendly interest. But Enrico, beyond the physical beauty of the young man, was gradually discovering his values and he was even more fascinated. Enrico often went to see Gaetano after the shop closing or at time it was Tano to go to Enrico's home.

Enrico was feeling more and more attracted by the wonderful youth, but Tano, though always very kind, careful, sweet with him, never showed him to feel something more than a virile friendship. However Enrico didn't want to risk spoiling the beautiful friendship that was born, risk totally losing him, therefore he decided to set his mind at rest and contented himself to taste his agreeable closeness, even if with a certain regret, and also if often he was aroused just being near him.

They knew each other for about one year, when one day Tano went to see him asking for an examination - he felt some sharp pangs at his groin and was worried. Enrico set to visit him, troubled - having to check him there on the groin was something that made him agitated. Having to touch right in that point and to impose on himself not to let himself go to caress him, to touch him, really seemed to him a prank of destiny. But he could not refuse, of course. He made him lie down on his stretcher in the surgery and asked him to uncover himself. Tano opened and lowered his trousers and remained in front of him with only the underpants to cover him. Enrico started to palpate him, asking where he did feel pain... and was terribly aroused.

With his surprise, excitement and pleasure, he noticed that also Tano vas getting aroused - his underpants were raising and swelling deliciously. Tano blushed to his ears and apologized, embarrassed. Enrico told him he had nothing to be ashamed of - it was normal that a young man was aroused being touched there, physician word! He wanted to caress him, to grope him, to kiss him and he hardly restrained himself.

But then he asked him, "You don't have a woman, do you?"

"Never had one." Tano answered in a low voice, almost shameful.

"I neither, to tell the truth. But we are still young..." Enrico said without taking away his hand from his friend's groin, but without moving it. He felt all over his own body a burning heat, he felt like being covered in sweat.

"I'm not attracted by women..." Tano added, blushing again.

At this point Enrico moved his hand so that he could feel the warmth of the beautiful erection of his friend, pushing under the light cloth of his underpants. Tano had a long shudder and his member darted. Enrico was more and more excited.

With a low and sensual voice, he said, "Everything seems in order, here. I would say that all is working in the right way." and moved some more his hand, now explicitly brushing against the erected member of his friend.

Tano closed his eyes and asked, with an almost imperceptible voice, "Would you please exam me thoroughly, to ascertain if everything really works as it should?"

Enrico moved his hand on the tenting cloth and felt lightly but resolutely the palpitating member. For a few moments none of them spoke, Enrico continued to finger that hard member, feeling almost fainting for the pleasure, for the joy. Gaetano opened his eyes and their eyes met. Enrico smiled.

"What do you feel, Tano?" he asked fingering him more assuredly.

"Shivers..."

"And now?" Enrico asked pushing down his hand on that pulsating rod and surrounding it with his fingers.

"I feel pleasure..." whispered Gaetano, blushing slightly.

"I too feel a great pleasure, touching you so." Enrico murmured and slowly bent on him, nearing his face to that of Gaetano, the eyes in his eyes

Enrico was trembling, while waiting for his friend's reaction. Gaetano parted his lips and the two young men kissed with all the passion of a long waiting.

Enrico felt like a buzzing in his ears, he felt so very light, and happy and while he was continuing to kiss those so sweet lips, his hand, now bold, opened its way surpassing the last obstacle and leaned on the naked member tense to the spasm. The member darted in Enrico's hand, who felt a long, intense shudder all long his spine, up to his hair. Tano, while Enrico was standing up parting from him, emitted a long, flickering sigh.

"Since the first moment I saw you, I felt strongly attracted by you." Enrico whispered. "That's why I was coming to buy all that pepper. It is said that pepper is an aphrodisiac, but I didn't need all of it, because all I needed was to look at you." he added continuing to finger him under his underpants.

Gaetano emitted a kind of hiccup and said, "If you don't pull away your hand, in a short while I'll come but I would like... I would like to enjoy with you. I really would like that a lot..."

Enrico pulled away his hand and smiled, "I dreamed so much about this moment, Tano. Being able to touch you so... Come into the other room, please, we will be more comfortable."

Gaetano smiled nodding and, tidying up he left the stretcher and followed his friend to his bedroom. As they entered, Enrico lit all the lamps. Then they started to undress each other, both feeling terribly excited. When their bodies were at last naked, they started to caress each other until their pleasure became so sharp to seem almost unbearable.

"Come into my bed, Tano." Enrico whispered with the voice hoarse for the intensity of desire.

They lied down, embracing, their limbs intertwined and the sweet play of love started. They were searching for each other, the wanted each other and were telling it with all their bodies. They got really near the pleasure top but, almost for a tacit agreement, they slowed down in order to protract the splendid sensations they were giving to each other.

On the soft and cozy bed, continuing to exchange gushing now sweet now vigorous in a counterpoint of opposed desires - that of giving and that of taking, that of cuddling and that of squeezing, that of still holding back and that of letting at last go themselves. It was thirst for love, for a true and deep communication, for a complete fusion. The same thirst for both of them. This consonance of emotions was the score on which was resounding, developing and unrolling their first, unexpected but so long desired encounter. Finally they surpassed the no return point and their desire exploded irrepressible, even though they didn't yet unite. They lied down worn out but satisfied, caressing each other with yearning sweetness.

Enrico emitted a long, flickering sigh. Then he asked to his friend, "Would you come and live with me, Gaetano?"

"It would be very beautiful but this is a small town - what would people say? You know how puritanical they are, here in the Papal State. But we can meet any time we want."

"It is not the same, but possibly you are right." Enrico reluctantly admitted.

"This first time has been really beautiful. But it can be even better than that, can't it?" Gaetano said him with mischievous eyes, caressing him again in his intimate parts.

"Yes. I would like reaching a full union, with you."

"You take me and I will take you?" Tano asked him, lovingly ruffling his air and smiling him.

"Yes."

"We have all the time we want." Tano said but, suddenly he became serious.

Enrico noticed the change of his friend, "What happens? Why that expression?" he asked tenderly brushing his beautiful face.

"Some years ago I said exactly this same sentence." the youth said with sadness.

"Was this an old relationship? Would you like telling me?"

Gaetano nodded and started to tell him the part of his life that previously he hid from him. He remembered the two men he loved, Tommaso and Felice, both dead. Enrico while listening gently caressed him.

When Gaetano ended, Enrico asked him, "Was it painful, telling me?"

"A little, but I am happy I did it."

"You suffered very much, didn't you?"

"Yes and the scars remain." Gaetano said, then, trying to react to the sadness that permeated him, asked to Enrico to tell him about his previous relationships.

So Enrico told him and answered all the questions Tano asked him, also the most intimate, because now there was a total intimacy between them.

"If you dress back we will go at my surgery and I can end my examination." Enrico told him caressing with pleasure his chest.

"Cannot you end your examination here? I don't feel like to already dress, not to see you clothed." Gaetano proposed with a hint of prayer in his voice.

Enrico smiled, nodded and ended to examine him. Gaetano had nothing serious possibly it was just a muscular sprain. After the check, Enrico lied again on the bed and they remained naked, embraced, caressing gently each other while talking, happy for that intimacy they had reached.

Two days later they met again, always at Enrico's home and, almost trembling, finally they united completely, happy to be able to take and give themselves to the other. Also sexually they discovered to fit perfectly together - they both loved to do the same things, and above all they both loved the long preliminaries and to remain embraced for a long while after the coitus. Both were happy to have found each other, to be together.

They met almost every day, even though they didn't make love each time, but both enjoyed very much being embraced and caressing each other while talking. When the good season came, they took the habit to go to bathe at the sea-side in full night, along the pine-forest, then to make love on the waterline, under the stars.

Once Enrico asked him if he thought he was skilled in bed.

Gaetano smiled and ruffled his hair - this was his utmost affection gesture - and said, "What a question, Enrico! When you ask me such questions, you seem a child. It is not a problem of skill, you know that. What you give me and what I need is not only enjoyment, it is a lot more. I can get enjoyment from many. What you give me, not many are able to give."

"Aren't we all somewhat children, Tano?" Enrico asked him almost as an apology.

Gaetano caressed him on his member and said with a mischievous smile, "Not here, happily!"

Enrico didn't withdraw but blushed slightly. Gaetano loved the decency his lover retained. And Enrico loved the spontaneous and straight to the point manners of his beautiful lover. He felt happy when they could taste their intimacy moments and even though he at time blushed for the manners of his friend, he enjoyed them.

Enrico maintained epistolary contacts with some old patriot friends. So he came to know that General Garibaldi was again recruiting an army of volunteers for the cause. In 1859 Enrico, enthusiast for the news he was getting, decided to enroll as a Garibaldian volunteer.

"Tano, why don't you enroll also? I wouldn't want to lose you..." he told him when he made him know his decision.

His friend looked at him with a sad smile and Enrico understood that the answer would be a "no" even before hearing it and he too became sad.

"You see, Enrico, I'm not tailored for war. You can think I'm a selfish person, but if I came with you I would continuously tremble at the thought to lose you too. As I trembled for Felice each time he went with his mates to do an ambush. I don't want to have to close your eyes as I had to do to Felice, try to understand me."

"Yes, I can understand you, but in this way you lose me all the same, because I cannot renounce. I really regret a lot having to separate from you, but I cannot withdraw now. I almost fled away once and I cannot... no, I cannot do it again."

"It is true that I lose you, but I know you are alive. I know how important is for you your ideal of a united Italy, and I can understand it. Therefore... I cannot but say to you farewell."

"Perhaps, Tano, I don't love you as much as you deserve. But if I don't go volunteer I would feel remorse all my long life and so I would risk to make our lives unbearable, with my remorse. This is the hour of Italy that I have been waiting for always, the one which my maestro and friend Carlo Poma gave his life for, I have to go..." Enrico said, feeling torn by a growing sadness, but determined.

They said farewell at Gaetano's place, making love all the night long with passion, almost trying to tell each other with their bodies that each of them forgave the other for not sharing his same choices.
