Ch11 (A brief Prelude)
The crowd atop the main area of orbital space station I1-C were in an uproar. Officers and service personnel were running back and forth in almost every direction, each seemingly with his or her own agenda. Some carried bits of machinery, some carried weapons, and others carried all manner of supplies imaginable including various panel read-out charts.
Wade felt at a loss, as he stood to one side and watched people as they passed; studying faces and expressions, almost as though he had never once laid eyes on another human being.
No one noticed him.
No one paid the slightest bit of attention.
Except one.
Wade caught a flash of platinum blond moving quickly in one direction. He mentally chided himself as he felt his heart skip a beat.
"Kylan!" he called over the din of voices and other noises. "Kylan!" he called again.
The man turned towards the direction of Wade's voice. Wade smiled, until he saw those eyes; those cold and distant eyes filled with a stoic, all-knowing hatred he had been trying to forget.
Oh god, he thought. Could it really be-?
"Something wrong?" a deep voice asked.
Wade turned, "Kylan!" he said, shocked.
"Who else?" the other man smiled. "Weren't you just calling me?" he asked, a little confused.
Wade turned back around and searched the crowd but the man was gone.
"Something wrong?"
"No... nothing," Wade shook his head, "Nothing's wrong. Sorry."
"You've been acting strange ever since we left that bar. Is something troubling you?"
Wade paused for a second, as both men walked towards the side railing that overlooked the deep blue planet far below. "Kylan..." he said finally.
"Hmm?"
"We never did get to talk back there in the bar, did we?" Wade asked, looking up.
Kylan laughed warmly before he spoke, "Wade... The thing is.... I-"
"Oomph!" a voice exclaimed, as Wade felt himself being pushed aside. "Watch where you're going!" Charles Jameson snapped, as he recoiled from the collision.
"Chuck?" Kylan blinked, looking down at the man who was busy picking up various scattered electrical components off the deck and placing them inside of a large box.
"Let me help you," Wade smiled. Reaching down, he picked up a strange piece of metal that had various tubes of red and blue liquid imbedded inside.
"I can get that!" Charles said forcefully, as he snatched the object from Wade's hand. "Anyway," he huffed, "some of us actually have work to do. We can't all be like you."
"... Are you alright, Chuck?"
Charles clearly wasn't listening by that point, as he glared first at Wade, and then at Kylan. "Looks like we're all in the same formation for the rescue missions," his eyes narrowed, "So just try to stay out of my way!" With that, Charles stomped off at a brisk pace, nearly bumping into five more people as he passed.
"What's with him?" Kylan asked, rubbing the back of his head slowly.
"He must still be mad about what happened to Unity." Wade shrugged, and turned to face the starry vista outside the station. He jumped as he felt an arm reach around from behind him and clasp his shoulder.
"Did I startle you?" Kylan smiled, holding the other man tight as they both looked out into the vastness of space.
"Kylan...." Wade could feel the blood rush to his face, making him blush a healthy shade of crimson.
"Why don't we talk after the mission, hey?"
"But-"
"When we both come back from the mission," Kylan continued. "But for now, stay with me a moment longer won't you?"
"Kylan...." He could feel a deep warmth and comfort as the two men watched the world turn...
