I got to the car before Karl and got my things stashed in the trunk by the time he showed up.
"Let's get out of here before they find us!"
"I concur. I just wanted to do something nice."
We got in the car and out of the parking lot in seconds. Down the road and out of sight. We decided to stop and get a quick snack to hold us until supper.
"With any luck we got away clean."
"Yeah but all I need is just one friend of mine to recognized that pic and they will be all over us again. They say no good deed goes unpunished."
"Yeah people find out you have a big heart and they all want a bit of a transplant."
Soon enough we headed back to my house. We got to the corner of my street and I looked up towards my house.
"Crap! That's a news van up there."
"Go over to the next block and turn left."
"Where is that going to take us?"
"To my house, unless there's a van there too."
"And if there is then what?"
"Either you face the music or find someplace else to hide out for a while."
We got to the corner and looked up the street. No van but there were a couple of cars parked on the street.
"Karl, who parks on the street around here?"
"Nobody. Keep driving and let me think."
I drove straight ahead and aimlessly for a few minutes while Karl was thinking.
"I got an idea. Hang a left at the next light."
"Care to share?"
"There's an internet cafe a few blocks from here. We go in get a comp and send an email to the news outlets telling them why you did it and that you don't want any recognition for it or anything like that. You use a dummyed up email account but give them something they can verify with the toy store management."
"You really think that will work?"
"Hey better than a poke in the ribs with a sharp stick ain't it?"
"I suppose it's worth a try."
We found the place Karl was talking about and went inside and got a machine. We were given more than a cursory look by a couple of the other clients, probably becuase they had seen everything on the net.
Regardless I went ahead and made the email posts, and asked them to call off their dogs. It took about 45 minutes but everyone that I had emailed replied back that they understood and would pull their coverage.
"Damn who had thought it would work so well?"
"Yeah well I'd still look before you pull into your street."
"We're not going to my house just yet. First stop is your place to unload."
"Yeah if there are no cars in the street."
We got to Karl's street and it seemed to be clear. We pulled into his driveway and I made it a point to notice the name on the mailbox,as I had never thought to get Karl's last name.
"Help me get the stuff out of the trunk, all of it goes here."
"Are you shitting me Den?"
"Nope not a bit. I figure yours is going to be my only family from here on out."
We went into the house and were faced with Karls' little brother, who stood there like a deer in the headlights. I put every thing down.
"I'm not going to break Bobbie."
The smile that would split his face was amazing. He would charge me and I would catch him up into a hug.
"I missed having my other brother around."
"Well I'll be around for a while now Bobbie."
I would put Bobbie down as a young lady made her appearance.
"Hello Alice."
"Hi Dennis."
And she turned around and walked off.
Karl's father was next to make an appearance from somewhere deeper in the house.
"Mr Holtz"
"Where? Dennis you know damn well Mr Holtz is my father, but I understand. You have called me Stan for a good long time now and my wife is Gert."
"Thank you for understanding, but I may well relapse to Mr and Mrs for a while yet. It just doesn't feel right for me to address you by your first names."
"As I said understandable. Now what in the name of all the saints have you been up to? We've been swarmed with reporters and I've no idea why."
"Guess I did something stupid with my new found money. I filled a Toys for Tots box at the toy store in the mall and I was stupid enough to think I could do it anonomously."
"Yes well I can see where that might garner a bit of attention these days. So how did you manage to call them off?"
"A few well placed emails. It was Karls idea."
"Well seems to have worked."
"I hope so. Karl will you call Mrs Ohanlon and let her know what's going on? I don't even know the number at the house."
"Yeah, why don't you get that stuff under the tree."
"What all of this is for us? Dennis you know you didn't have to."
"As I said to somebody else just last night,if I had to it probably wouldn't have happened without a fight. I told Karl,I think you guys are going to be about the only family I have left,so please don't argue."
At that point Karl came back to find us.
"Well Mrs O'hanlon is ticked but she understands. There is still one independent station hanging around the house."
"Guess I didn't think of everybody. To bad there isn't some way to get into my place unseen."
"But there is Den. Just go through the gate in the back yard. Our places back up to each other."
"Well isn't that convienent?"
"Always has been, and that's all I'm going to say about that."
"Like you really thought it was a secret Karl? Your mother and I don't interfere, but we are not oblivious."
Karl turned several shades of red himself on that one.
"Well let's get this stuff around the tree and no shaking boxes as there are a couple of fragile ones in there."
"I'm home dear! You wouldn't believe all the hubbub at the mall. Is that Dennis's car in the driveway?"
"It would be Mrs..........Gert."
"Oh Dennis!"
She came into the room and wrapped me up in her arms.
"Well let me look at you. You've lost weight I think."
"I understand that happens when you lay around unconcious for 6 months."
"Well yes of course, but we'll take care of that won't we."
"Only if you let me build it back as muscle mass and not fat."
"I wouldn't have it any other way,and I think neither would that woman you have over the fence."
"I think I have to agree with you there. I've decided to keep Mrs O'hanlon on."
"Well then I'll have no worries that you'll either starve or run out of clean clothes."
"What was this about the mall dear?"
"Oh the whole place was in a flap over some young man who went and filled the Toys for Tots box at the toy store."
Karl and I had all we could do to keep from bursting out laughing.
"Oh no!"
"Oh yes. We just got the reporters called off a little bit ago. Probably a good thing you weren't home."
"I should say so. I have a stout broom and I'm not afraid to use it."
"Why do I not doubt that?"
"Because you've felt it more than once yourself, scamp."
We all had a good laugh about that.
"Well I guess I'm going to try and get back into my house unscathed. I doubt Mrs O'hanlon will leave or rest easy until I do."
"You want I should come with you Den?"
"Karl I know this is going to hurt you,but I think I need to explore the house alone for a while. I've got your number if I need you."
"I think I understand Den. I might still drop over after supper then."
"Dennis, you will be with us Christmas day won't you?"
"I won't miss that for anything."
"And caroling on Christmas eve?"
"Caroling? I don't know, can I sing worth a sh......darn?"
"You have a nice baritone voice Dennis. You've been with us for the last 3 years."
"Then I suspect I shall make it 4."
I got myself together and left and got my car. Around the corner to my house and I pulled into my drive way. I had almost made it to the garage before a guy came out of the bushes at me.
