It was 11 before I knew it and my phone buzzed with Karl's usual message an emoji's. I sent my usual back and it was lights out.
5:45 rolled around soon enough and I rolled out of bed and got ready to go jogging. I went out my door and Gordon was there and we made our way outside. There was no sign of Aiden, which would considerably lighten the mood.
Aiden and I started our way around the quad and Karl joined us. We continued on and as we approached my dorm,I saw Aiden waiting off to the side.
"Ignore him Gordon. It's bound to happen that you run into him living in the same dorm. Just keep going."
We continued on right past Aiden who looked a little sullen when we didn't even speak to him. Still he fell in behind us without saying a word to anyone.
When Grdon and I had finished Aiden went right on by to get in his fifth lap. Gordon and I went upstairs and got our shower in before Aiden could finish his run.
We passed Aiden on our way down to breakfast and made it a point to eat and be on our way to our Intro to business class. It was the usual brisk no nonsense lecture and discussion with Mr McEmbers and we were out on time. I headed off to Ethics where I knew I would have to at least be in the presence of Aiden.
When I got there Aiden was already there. I purposely took a seat as far away from him as I could. The look on his face made me think he was about to cry. Mrs Flarety came in and looked around for a moment and noticed that I wasn't sitting in my usual place. She could also see the look on Aidens face. The lecture was started and when the hour was up we were dismissed.
"Mr Sawyer,may I see you a moment?"
I moved on down to Mrs Flarety.
"Yes ma'am?"
"I couldn't help but notice you weren't sitting in your usual place Mr Sawyer, and that Mr Harris looked like he lost his last friend. Anything to be concerned about?"
"Mrs Flarety, with all due respect, and an obvious nod to this class,it is a personal matter and the circumstances of it are of concern only to those involved."
"I see, well it seems I've gotten the meassage across only to well Mr Sawyer. I shall respect you stance. Have a good day young man."
"Thank you for understanding Mrs Flarety. I'll try not to let it affect the class any further than it has. Good day."
It was a good thing I had time between my classes as after that little confrontation I had to take a few to get my act together. My next class was going to be the worst of the day as Gordon and Aiden were both in it with me. I grabbed a little lunch and then headed over to my basic accounting class.
For some reason today everyone had shown up early and the only seats left when Gordon and I got there were our usual ones right beside Aiden.
"Take a deep breath Gordon and don't let him get to you. Switch seats with me so I am at least in between you."
"Ok."
We moved to our seats and not a word was spoken, though Aiden kept looking over at Gordon trying to get his attention. Gordon did a good job of ignoring him. Mr Andrews came in and got things started. We were about 20 minutes into the class.
"Mr Harris! Can you kindly repeat what I just said?"
"I...ou.... no sir I can't."
"I thought not. Whatever seems to be your problem today I would suggest you leave it outside of this class."
The class got back on track and would finally end for the day. I was done but Gordon and Aiden still had their freshman english to get through together. I made it a point to walk Gordon to the class and then waited around for an hour to walk him back to the dorm. Aiden was still looking like a whipped dog when he came out of the class. He looked like he wanted to talk to Gordon in the worst way but with me right there he didn't dare try.
We made it back to the dorm without incident and Gordon went to is room and I went to mine. Pete came back to our room a bit later.
"So how did day one of the breakup go?"
"Gordon is holding up better than Aiden if looks are anything to go by."
"Yeah I saw Aiden a while ago. He looks pretty damn miserable."
At that point there was a knock at our door. I went over and opened it and Dave,Gordons roomie, was standing there.
"Can I talk to you for a few Dennis?"
"Sure come on in. What's up?"
"Funny ,that's what I was going to ask you. Gordy hasn't been himself since last night. I was wondering if you have any idea what was going on?"
"I do,but I'm not at liberty to say."
"Why? You don't think I know that Gordon is exploring his feelings with that kid from down the hall? He makes no difference to me if he likes guys or girls. I just don't like having to walk on eggs around him."
"Then the long and short of it is that they had a falling out and for Gordon it has been....well I don't know what the right word is,but it's like he's been kicked in the balls."
"I'm going to hurt that boy."
"You are going to do nothing of the sort. This is something that Gordon is going to have to work through for himself. It's his first time, well for a lot of things. He's going to have to learn to stand on his own two feet Dave. All we can do is be there for him and support him. We cannot take a hand either directly or indirectly in matters."
"I hope he gets over this soon. I'll try to stay out of it,but I'm making no promises."
"Just bear with it for a couple of days. I think Gordon will get back to himself in short order."
"I sure as hell hope so. Thanks for letting me know. I thought it was something I might have done."
Dave left and went back to his room.
"What do you want to do about supper Pete?"
"I'm meeting Susan over at the student union."
"Guess I'll just head down to the cafeteria later, unless Karl calls."
"I would have thought you'd want to get Gordon off campus so he doesn't run into Aiden."
"Yeah I could but that really isn't going to help in the long run. That just teaches Gordon to run away from his problems, and that doesn't work well usually."
"Yeah I suppose not."
"I'm going to hit the gym for a while and see if I can work off some of the frustration."
It was a quiet trip over to the gym and a just as quiet work out. I ended up heading into the gymnastics room.
"Hey Dennis!"
It was Gary and he looked almost happy.
"Hey Gary what gives?"
"Coach got me that appointment with a specialist over at the medical campus the other side of town. He thinks he can correct my back without surgery. But get this,he's going to do it for nothing as he gets to use me as a case study and then followup. He thinks it will take the better part of 3 years. Now here's the real kick. Because they usually have to pay for the study subject to hang around,it's cheaper for them to just let the college absorb my tutiton!"
"So you get treatemnt and get to stay in school too!"
"Right"
"Damn that is good news Gary. Here's hoping that they can take care of it for you."
"You going to work out today?"
"I was thinking about it,but it looks like everything is being used and seeing as the first meet is next weekend,I think I'll just watch for a while."
"Yeah the coach has got me watching as well. Don't know what he expects me to see,but I guess he thinks two sets of eyes are better than one."
"Hey he could well be right. But from where I'm standing everybody looks to be in good shape."
Gary and I both walked around and watched different guys do their routines and I really didn't see anything that needed correcting. When the coach sent the guys to the showers he came over to where Gary and I were.
"Did either of you spot anything today?"
"I didn't coach."
"Me neither coach."
"Well I do appreciate your watching for me. I can only be in so many places at once. Dennis, I've got a favor to ask you if you're going to be around this weekend."
"Plans are to be here coach."
"Good can I get you to be the host to the visiting team? All you have to do is answer their questions and tell them where to find things on campus. Their coach won't allow them to go off campus so that's not a problem."
"Sure thing. When do they report in and where will they be staying?"
"Third floor of Cochran hall has always been visiting team quarters. Gary if you could help out as well?"
"Sure coach. I know the routine. What time will they be arriving?"
"Shouldn't be until around 6 Friday night if they are on schedule."
"OK coach not a problem. The cafeteria will still be open so food isn't a problem. Are they allowed to see the facilities before the meet?"
"They are. You can bring anyone by the gymnasium who is interested. They're going to start setting the equipment up tomorrow. You can see me sometime Friday afternoon to pick up their guest passes. These guys won't be allowed into the locker room without them. That goes for you two as well. I'll have a room assignment sheet for you then as well. Thanks for doing this for me guys. It's short notice but the guys who were going to do this split this morning."
"Not a problem coach I'm happy to help."
"Yeah me too. This at least helps me stay in touch with the sport, sorta."
"Well I'm headed for the showers and then to get something to eat. I'll catch you Friday if not sooner Gary."
"Later Den."
I showered and made my way back to the dorm and found Karl waiting for me.
"Hey downstairs for supper or what?"
"Sure downstairs is fine. How has the day gone as far as Gordon goes?"
"Haven't seen him since we went jogging this morning. Invite him to join us?"
"If you want."
I went to Gordons room and knocked on the door.
"Go away!"
"Gordon, it's Dennis."
The door opend by just a little.
"Dennis I'd just as soon be alone right now, please."
"As long as you're alright."
"I'm ok. I'm just feeling a bit down and...you know. If it makes you any happier Dave is here to keep me from doing anything stupid."
"Ok as long as you're sure. You have my number if you want to talk or anything."
"Yeah. You two have a good night."
And the door closed.
"I'm a little worried about him Den."
"So am I but if he isn't going to let us help him there isn't a hell of a lot we can do about it."
