Dirk got a look on his face like he was going to say something, but walked on out. Karl and I joined the line and went out and got in my car to follow the family to the cemetary.

There was a short sermon at the cemetary and then Karl and I got in line to express our condolences. I finally came face to face with Dirk and the corners of his mouth actually turned up a bit.

"Hang around, please?"

"Sure,we'll be over by the car."

Dirk and his mother were soon done with everyone and Dirk came over to us.

"I gotta say I didn't expect you two to be here."

"Based on past experience,I didn't think any of your guys would show and I thought you could use the moral support."

"Again,why?"

"Dirk,if and when I get my memory back,I'm betting I'm going to crash hard. I know Karl and my friends will be there for me,just as they would have if I have been at my parents services. So, just so you would have somebody to lean on if you needed it."

"People are coming to the house. Follow us back?"

"If that's what you want Dirk."

Karl and I got into my car and we followed everyone back to Dirks. It was a large house on at least a couple of acres. We pulled into the drive way at the end of the line of cars. When Karl and I got out we were quickly surrounded by Dirks so called friends.

"I don't think you're welcome here Sawyer."

"We're here at Dirks express invitation."

"Like hell you are."

"Like hell they are,so back off."

Dirk had arrived as he probably expected the welcome we would receive. His guys looked at him like he had lost his mind.

"I didn't see any of you guys at the church or the cemetary, but you're here for the free food. At least they had the balls to show up,so why don't you guys just go mingle,or better yet go home."

The guys just kind of looked at Dirk like he had really gone round the bend and then headed back towards where the rest of the people were gathered.

"I hope you didn't just burn all your bridges on our account Dirk."

"I doubt it. They'll be back in a couple of days. I need to get up there but I'd like you guys to hang around until I can get free of everybody."

"Not a problem Dirk."

Karl and I moved up to the backyard patio where everyone else seemed to be. Dirks so called buddies were still there and kept giving us the evil eye so to speak. One of them got brave and came over to us.

"So just what the hell do you want here Sawyer?"

"That's just the point I don't want anything."

"Bullshit! After the way Dirk has treated you? You ain't doing this our of the goodness of your heart."

"I don't know about that, but like Dirk said, none of you guys were at the services. I know I would have liked somebody there I could have leaned on when my parents were laid to rest,if I had been awake for it."

The guy just looked at me like I had three heads and turned and walked away.

"Love of my life,I think you just blew somebodies mind."

"Maybe, but he at least looks to be thinking about it. That could turn out to be either a good or a bad thing. I'm hoping for good."

It wasn't too long before Dirk got away and found us.

"Ace didn't give you any trouble did he?"

"No he just wanted to know what we were expecting to get out of being here."

"And?"

"I told him nothing, that we just wanted to be there for you. I think he thinks we're nuts."

"I know he thinks you're nuts. Now that I think back on it, he's always been one to wonder what's in it for me?"

"I don't know how things are set up Dirk, and it's none of my business anyway;but I'm betting you are going to have a lot more say at the dealerships. You're probably going to find more 'friends' than you ever thought you had out there looking for a little bit better deal. I just want you to know that there are at least a couple of us who aren't there with our hand out."

"Yeah I hear you Dennis, and you're probably right. I'll just have to see who hangs with me and who bails when they don't get anything."

"Dirk, I don't believe I know these young men."

"Mother, this is Karl Holtz and Dennis Sawyer."

"Karl,Dennis.....Sawyer? Isn't this the young man whose car you..."

"Yes mother it is."

"And you young men are here because?"

"As I told Dirk Mrs Chambers, just so he would have somebody to lean who wasn't looking for something out of it."

"Charles was right, you are a class act. Welcome to our home gentelmen."

Mrs Chambers went to mingle with the other folks at that point.

"So why did you want us to follow you back here Dirk?"

"Would you believe me if I told you just to shock the hangers on?"

"I could, but there's got to be more to it than that."

"Yeah, there is. I finally realized what a raw deal I've been giving you these last couple of years. You got me thinking when you stepped in with the judge. I don't know how many people would have done that, especially anybody who has been treated the way I did you.

I came to the conclusion that it's not who you love that defines you as a person, well at least not totally. The way you stood up for that kid at the arcade, and the way you stood up to me and dad in court, and then the way you stood up FOR me in court. I even recognized you and that toy store stunt last Christmas. I realized that bring gay isn't the only thing that makes you who you are."

"Sounds like you did a lot of growing up in a damn short time."

"I guess I did Dennis, and I wanted to thank you for it. I don't know that I would have ever done it without my knowing you, even if it was only as a target."

"Wow, now it's my turn to be blown away. Dirk, you might think I'm being corny, but I'd like to be able to call you my friend and mean it."

I offered him my hand and he took it,maybe a bit more firmly than required and I looked and saw a bit of a gleam in his eye. So I squeezed back much to Dirks surprise.

"Ok point made Dennis. I have to go mingle some more,if you guys need to get going I understand."

"We can hang as long as you need us to Dirk. We don't have to leave to go back to school until sometime tomorrow."

"Thanks I'll be around and if the guys give you any trouble you have my permission to deck them."

"Let's hope it doesn't come to that."

Karl and I stayed on the outskirts of the gathering and Ace drifted over to us.

"You aren't putting the move on Dirk when he is vunerable are you Sawyer?"

"Jeez Ace,with my fiance standing right here? I might be crazy but I'm not stupid. For the last time,I'm only here to give Dirk some moral support, because it is the stand up thing to do."

"Nobody believes that but you two. You're up to something."

"Think what you want to Ace. I know what's in my heart. Now,Dirk is headed this way and he has already said to flatten any of you guys if you gave us trouble. I would hate to have to do that at this time and in this place."

"Is he giving you trouble Dennis?"

"Not a bit of it Dirk, just a little conversation."

At this point the other guys had drifted over to us.

"Last time I'm going to say this you meatheads. These two are alright people. I was wrong in the way I treated them. I don't expect you guys to understand, but I do expect you to not give them any grief, now or any other time. Got it?"

"Yeah we got it. You're turning queer to."

I saw the look that came over Dirks face and saw him tense.

"Don't do it Dirk, not here, not today."

Dirk looked at me and then at the folks around ,who didn't seem to notice.

"You're right Dennis. If that's the way you guys feel then you know where the door is. Don't let it bite you in the ass on your way out."

His guys looked at him and slowly most of them moved to stand beside Dirk. Eventually Ace was the only one standing alone facing Dirk. He looked around at the other guys and just turned and stormed off.

"See what it's like Dirk? Now is one of those times when you find out who your friends are."

"Yeah I'm getting the drift of it Dennis. Which reminds me,what the hell came over you at the arcade that day?"

"Pure rage,I think. Karl tells me he's only ever seen me do that once before. If you're familiar with the phrase 'seeing red', well I guess that's what happened to me."

"Gotta tell you I never saw that coming, not from you."

"At some point you have to say enough is enough. Guess you pushed me to that point."

The other people about had started to drift off and go their seperate ways. Karl gave me a look that signaled he wanted to leave as well.

"I think we'll be heading out Dirk,if you don't need us."

"Yeah go ahead, and thanks for being here."

"Listen, here is my cell number if you ever need to talk. Just remember I have classes until mid afternoon most days."

"Thanks Den,I'll try not to abuse the offer."

We shook hands again and Karl and I made our way out to the car. Our trip back to the house was uneventful. We spent the rest of the day with Karls family and the evening in my house.

Sunday morning and Karl and I got our jogging in with Aaron and Roland. We spent a few hours catching them up on life on campus and then went over and had lunch with Karls family and the we jumped back into the car and headed back to campus.
